HUNTINGTON LIGHTHOUSE - East Northport’s Cub Scout Pack 5 Celebrated a great year featuring with opening and closing ceremonies, a slideshow with pictures and videos of the past 12 months including a visit to President Teddy Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill, the Battleship Massachusetts and the Huntington Lighthouse. The evening wrapped up with a virtual campfire with riddles, jokes, songs and Scout Vespers. In September 2019, Pack 5 took a tour of the Huntington Lighthouse—(left to right) Cub Scouts Laila Butler, Ela Carballeira, Luna Butler, Blake Nielsen, Luca Butler, and Clare Smith.
A garage sale fundraiser to benefit Hauppauge Boy Scout Troop 343’s Michael Hufnagel to help pay for the materials for his Eagle Scout Community Service Project is being held Saturday and Sunday July 25 and July 26 - from 9AM till 3PM, at 1 Sarah Drive, Hauppauge (off Route 347, cross street is Clifford Blvd). Rain date: The following weekend August 1 and 2. The proceeds from this event will help to offset the cost of the materials needed for building and installing a “Bench Swing” at Smithtown location of Angela’s House (for medically fragile children). Melville Youth Embrace The Spirit Of Giving Generous Long Islanders have been finding ways to lend a helping hand to staff at Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center who have been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 battle, as well as Gurwin residents who are missing their loved ones due to the “No Visitation” mandate issued by the New York State Department of Health in March 2020. 16-year-old Melville resident Emily Rind created 370 care packages filled with puzzles, word search books, activities and sundry items to help keep Gurwin’s residents entertained and engaged, as part of her “Put a Smile on a Senior Campaign.” Rind, who was unable to visit her own grandmother due to New York State’s COVID-19 Stay-At-Home Order, said she could only imagine how seniors at Gurwin must feel not being able to see their loved ones. “I reached out to Gurwin to see which items were most needed, and then posted flyers around town to collect supplies,” said Emily. Affixed to the care packages was a note which read, “I know it must be hard not seeing your family and loved ones, so I hope this will brighten
your day and put a SMILE on your face.” In a show of support for Gurwin healthcare workers, fifth graders in Melville Girl Scout Troop 3650 dedicated their Bronze Award project to providing handmade personal protective equipment (PPE) for the staff. Troop members created face shields using 3D printers, as well as masks and ear guards, items that were in scarce supply during the onset of the pandemic. Commenting on the kindhearted donations, Nicole Hopper, Director of Therapeutic Recreation at Gurwin said, “In these challenging times when our staff are working their hardest to protect the wellbeing of those in their care, and when are residents are missing their families, the thoughtfulness of people in our local community like Emily and the Scouts in Troop 3650 really make a difference in helping to keep morale and spirits high.” About Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center The Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is a 460-bed nursing care facility in

Equity First Foundation

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.
Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:
career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more.
CSM Boyle for her military service. CSM Boyle joined the United States Army in 1978 under the GI Bill, ultimately earning a Civil Engineering degree. She served as a Field Artillery Surveyor from 1978 to 1986, a Survey Party Chief in an Engineer Brigade and as the First Sergeant of a Combat Heavy Engineer unit from 1986 to 2003. She served as an instructor and the Sergeant Major of a training unit from to 2003 until her retirement in 2007. CSM Boyle received the “Legion of Merit” in 2007, a military award of the United States Armed Forces that is given for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance
of outstanding services and achievements. Amongst numerous other awards she received were a meritorious service medal, Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medals, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal and Kuwait Liberation Medals from both Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. “It was a pleasure to honor and thank CSM Boyle for her service to this country and to her community,” said Legislator Donnelly. “She is truly deserving of this honor and I look forward to continue working with her and the American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244.”
Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. Cub Scout Pack 5 Hold Annual Family Campout Online via Zoom Cub Scout Pack 5 (Sponsored by St. Anthony of Padua, East Northport) held its Pack 5 Annual Family Campout on Friday, June 26, 2020 from 7-9 p.m. online via zoom in the Scouts’ back yards. There were 35 guests between 10 Families and this included the Cub Scouts, their siblings, parents, and grandparents. Pack 5 holds a family campout with outdoor Celebration of the Mass each June. In light of the COVID-19 quarantine and lockdown in New York this year, Pack 5 held a Zoom Backyard Campfire event with and an Interfaith Prayer woven in by former Pack 5 Scout, Luca Butler. Luca, now a Tenderfoot rank scout in Boy Scout Troop 113, is working on his Communication Merit Badge. Explained Cubmaster Craig Butler, “Since we could not camp as a group this year, families pitched
their tents in their own back yards, built fires and roasted s’mores. Pack 5 celebrated the past year of scouting with a slideshow and campfire routine. We had an online Zoom ceremony using video of the flag raising at Sagamore Hill from a fall 2019 trip to open the event with the Pledge and a flag ceremony. Pack 5 Scouts were recognized for their rank advancements (from Tigers to Bear to Wolf and to Webelos Scouts) this year.” As each scout’s accomplishments and advancement was recognized, a photo of the scout appeared on the Zoom screen. After advancements, a campfire program followed with plenty of jokes, songs and prayer. The evening closed with Pack 5 Vespers and then sharing of more stories, jokes, campfire and s’mores. Continued Cubmaster Butler, “Backyard camping -- almost as good as the real
thing!—was accomplished with each Cub Scout Pack 5 family setting up their tent in their own backyards and setting up a campfire, for which they had perfect weather. They were able to keep Pack 5 together during the past few months as well as celebrate the Annual Family Campout and Campfire via Zoom. Many thanks go to all of our volunteer parents and leaders for a great scouting year that included the annual family campout, a visit to Battleship Cove (in Massachusetts), the Huntington Lighthouse, as well as helping to raise the American Flag at early Boy Scout National leader and U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill.
