What Is The 50-30-20 Approach? Effective financial strategies vary depending on which stage of life a person is in. For example, a recent college graduate working his or her first professional job will not have the same financial strategy as someone on the cusp of retirement. But one financial strategy that people of all ages can look to for guidance is the 50-30-20 approach. Popularized by United States Senator Elizabeth Warren, the 50-30-20 approach to financial planning can be a valuable resource for anyone trying to develop a budget. The approach is simple yet effective. Under the 5030-20 approach, income is allocated based on this breakdown: · 50 percent of money is spent on needs, including housing costs, health insurance, car payments, and groceries · 30 percent of money is spent on wants, including hobbies, dining out and travel · 20 percent of money is allocated to savings Proponents of the 5030-20 approach note that calculations should be based on after-tax income, or what’s often referred to as “take-home pay.” Professionals with steady paychecks can easily determine their 50-3020 breakdowns by saving a month’s worth of pay stubs and establishing their monthly budget based on what’s coming in. The task can be trickier for self-employed or freelance workers, who may benefit from working with financial planners as they seek to create monthly budgets based on the 50-30-20 approach.

The annual James C. Metzger Leadership Award for Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse was presented to one player on each of the four teams that competed in the June 16 finals of the 2021 Section VIII Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse championships. The recipient for Cold Spring Harbor High School is senior midfielder Ben Bruno. Along with the other award winners, Bruno reflects the tenacity, honesty, commitment and positive attitude required in Nassau lacrosse. Each recipient also possesses the

ability to inspire others on and off the field. Bruno has committed to play at Amherst College in Massachusetts. “I would love to play all four years I am at Amherst,” said Bruno. “I know that is a difficult goal to accomplish. But if I put the work in and grind every day, I think I can do it. A team goal is to win a National Championship. Amherst came very close to winning a couple of years ago. The other recruits and I have made it our goal to put Amherst back in the national championship game and win.”

The leadership awards were presented by 1970s Long Island lacrosse star and local lacrosse benefactor James C. Metzger, who won many awards during his days at Half Hollow Hills East High School in Dix Hills, played lacrosse for two years at Hofstra University and is a member of the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame and the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. He is the founder and CEO of The Whitmore Agency, a leading insurance services and estate planning company headquartered in Garden City.

Ray Enners Award that is presented to the outstanding Suffolk County high school lacrosse player. Several weeks ago, Spallina won the James C. Metzger Most Valuable Player Award at the Long Island Championships. For more than 10 ten years, the Long Island Lacrosse Showcase for boys attending public high schools has been recognized as the premier event that allows players to display their talent for college coaches. Players also compete for roster spots to represent their county at the Long Island Showcase Nassau versus Suffolk games and then regional competition.

This year, the Nassau versus Suffolk games introduced the Metzger Cup for the winning teams and the James C. Metzger Most Valuable Player awards for outstanding players. The cup at each of the four games – Rising Freshmen, Rising Sophomores, Rising Juniors, and Rising Seniors -- was presented by the lacrosse, football and basketball standout at Half Hollow Hills East and lacrosse All-American at Hofstra University during the 1970s. Metzger, a lacrosse benefactor for youth, high school and college programs on Long Island, is founder and CEO of The Whitmore Agency, one of the largest independent insurance and financial firms in the New York metropolitan area with offices in Garden City.

Northport-East Northport BOE Reorganizes For 2021-2022 School Year The Northport-East Northport School District’s annual board of education reorganization meeting took place on July 1. The meeting began with district counsel swearing in reelected board member Victoria Buscareno and

newly elected Carol Taylor, who will each serve three year terms. The board also voted to approve Larry Licopoli as board president and Victoria Buscareno as board vice president. Both were voted in unanimously for the 2021-2022 school

year. Additionally, both Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer and District Clerk Beth Nystrom took their annual oath of office, pledging to fulfil their duty in serving the district.

Legislator Berland Honors Newest Eagles From Troop 34 Suffolk County Majority Leader Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) recently attended an Eagle Court of Honor to recognize Vincent Santoiemma from the 16th Legislative District and his fellow scout Douglas Fasciano from the 18th Legislative District who attained the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 34. At the ceremony, she presented Vincent with a County proclamation and both Eagle Scouts with 16th Legislative District pins. Vincent earned 31 merit badges and served in various leadership positions during his

scouting tenure. For his Eagle Project, he constructed and replaced two large wooden planters and a cedar wood bench at Helping Hand Rescue Mission in Huntington Station. Vincent’s work will offer a welcoming atmosphere to the area and a place for people to sit and enjoy the mission’s garden. Vincent will be attending SUNY Binghamton in September. For Douglas’ Eagle Project, he designed, planned and built a utility shed for Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Huntington Station. Douglas will be attending

Farmingdale State College in September. “As the mother of an Eagle Scout, I know all of the hard work and dedication that goes into achieving the rank of Eagle and just how special this occasion is for these young men and their families,” said Legislator Susan A. Berland. “Vincent and Douglas should be incredibly proud of all of the work they have done for the betterment of our community and I wish both of them all the best in their future endeavors. Congratulations! ”

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) would like to thank local residents who came to his office to generously donate pet food, toys and other supplies for pet owners in need, helping to make the 10th Annual Suffolk County Legislative Pet Food Drive a sweeping success. Legislator Donnelly opened his district office in Huntington Station as a drop-off location for the Pet Food Drive to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www. licares.org) from February through May of this year, collecting pet food and supplies for families in

need. LI Cares founded Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 after hearing about families who were unable to afford pet food, veterinary care and/or other services and were sadly faced with no other choice but to put their pets up for adoption. Baxter’s Pet Pantry also provides toys, pet clothes, feeding bowls, cat litter and other pet supplies, all of which were donated through this drive. “Families should never have to decide between feeding themselves and feeding their cherished pets,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I salute everyone at Long Island Cares for all they do,

and was happy to have this opportunity to help them continue to help pet owners. I am so grateful to our generous neighbors for their care and kindness,” said Legislator Donnelly. Legislator Donnelly’s office will continue to accept donations of pet food. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets. Residents From The Greens At Half Hollow Band Together To Support Sunrise Day Camp – Long Island Suffolk County Majority Leader Susan A. Berland was pleased to join The Greens at Half Hollow community, and Teams “Tiger Cubs” and “Blumberg Strides for Sunrise” for the annual SunriseWALKS event to raise funding and awareness for Sunrise Day Camp–Long Island, the

world’s first full-summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings, offered completely free of charge. Sunrise Day Camp– Long Island is a program of the Sunrise Association, whose mission is to bring back the simple joys of childhood to children impacted by pediatric cancer. In addition to

the day camp, they offer year-round programs and in-hospital recreational activities to families at no cost. This year’s walkathon goal is to raise $1,000,000; currently, more than $880,000 has been raised across Long Island! “I applaud Michele Tiger, Linda Levine and Roberta Weinroth for organizing

this event to support the great work that the Sunrise Association does for children with pediatric cancer in our community and world-wide,” said Legislator Susan A. Berland. “I want to thank all the residents who participated and remind everyone that there’s still time to make a donation for campers to attend this summer. If you have the means, please consider making a contribution.” “My family and I (Tiger Foundation) became involved 15 years ago with the Sunrise Day

Air Currents Can Carry Pesticides

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals.

People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-

branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.
