you have never experienced yourself. Engage yourself in the world. Don’t be afraid to try new things outside your comfort zone. Although it may be scary, to do so will also be very rewarding,” she said. Esther concluded by reminding her peers that they can have an impact on the world and that this is only the beginning. “If you end up in a situation that you do not like, try not to feel like it’s impossible to change your trajectory, or the trajectory of the world, for that matter. If you believe something’s impossible it will be, but if you hope for a possibility of change, it might just actually happen. Realize you don’t know everything, and that is a beautiful thing. Look at knowledge as fluid, not as a fixed thing and don’t feel bogged down in the things you don’t know. See it as endless opportunities to learn and grow.” “The next few years is a prime opportunity to discover who you truly are make yourself into the person that you want to be,” she concluded. time at Northport High School, I know that you have developed the tools to be thoughtful communicators, empathetic analyzers, deliberate thinkers and open-minded collaborators,” he said as he addressed the new alumni. “We are proud of the people you have become. We are proud of the questions you have had to grapple with. Proud of the resiliency you have shown, and proud of the answers you have given us.” Students were then handed their diplomas one by one as the crowd cheered them on. Parents, siblings and family members in attendance shouted in praise as students walked across the Northport High School stage for the final time. Finally, salutatorian Esther Loring addressed her peers and followed a similar theme of gratitude and excitement for the future. She also encouraged her peers to continue to strive to make the world a better place through understanding and acceptance. “Strive for understanding, or rather, acceptance, because it’s extremely difficult to understand something that

The Northport High School class of 2022 celebrated their commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 25 alongside their peers and families at Tiger Stadium. The sunny ceremony follows their years of hard work and growth and began with senior class representative Lisa Kovacs leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Salutatorian Michael Torres then addressed his peers, describing his personal growth and thanking those who helped him get to this point. “I learned something unique from each of you. I learned how to express myself. I learned how to accept support. I learned extensively about topics I was never familiar with, such as history and geography. I even learned how good creek water can taste, surprisingly. I can’t even count how many times I was grateful for you all for pushing me out of my comfort zone. Thank you,” he said. Principal Rob Dennis reflected on how this class has endured many challenges and will undoubtably shape the questions and answers of our future. “In your

earning cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude since the school adopted the system. “Your children are pretty remarkable,” Burzynski told family and friends of the graduates in attendance. “And they have helped us to earn some really amazing accolades over the years.” “It has been an absolute pleasure to watch you mature into the young men and women you are today,” Dr. Bossert said. “You have brought positive attention to our school district and given us all reason to celebrate and be filled with Elwood Pride.” Salutatorian Trinity Hausch, valedictorian Anson Kwan, All-School President Alexandra Haddad and featured speaker Max Slesinski all spoke on behalf of the students during the graduation ceremony. Hausch touched on themes of growth and change. “I hope we are all excited to meet the people we will become,” she said. “And I hope we
promise collectively never to stop learning, never stop questioning, and above all, never stop being kind.” “We’ve smiled and we’ve laughed,” Kwan said. “We’ve stuck together. And I think that’s the beauty of Elwood. Our size is the reason behind our greatest strength – our community. We, as Elwoodians, have always supported one another. Elwood is a place that thrives because of its community. And it’s through that community that I’ve learned so much.” Haddad spoke on the seniors’ bonds of friendship and memories before introducing Slesinski, who was selected by his peers. He lightheartedly told his classmates to always enjoy the moment, quoting singer Miley Cyrus’ lyrics, “It ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side. It’s the climb.” After receiving their diplomas and turning their tassels, the new Knights alumni tossed their caps in the air, beginning the next chapter in their lives.

As the proud seniors of the Harborfields High School Class of 2022 walked out on to the football field on the morning of June 25 for the school’s 63rd commencement ceremony, the warm summer sunshine perfectly matched the warmth in their hearts. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and “The StarSpangled Banner,” the choir saluted the school with the singing of the Harborfields alma mater. Superintendent Dr. Rory Manning began by recognizing outgoing Principal Timothy Russo for his dedicated 25 years of service. “Harborfields High School is in a better place because of your leadership,” he said, before presenting Russo with his own honorary diploma. Turning his attention to the seniors, Dr. Manning gifted them with his personal list of “five little things for success” for the new graduates to do daily: “Take care of yourself, be on time, make your bed, be kind and hug your family. If you remember those five little things, you’ll be happier and more successful. You have the CLASS OF 2022 CELEBRATE COMMENCEMENT WITH PRIDE - Elwood- Dr. Manning guarantee on John H. Glenn High School’s Class of 2022 tossed their caps at graduation. Photo that.” courtesy of Elwood School District
In his address, salutatorian Christopher Qi quoted President John F. Kennedy, telling his fellow seniors, “Embrace any obstacles you encounter head-on and welcome opportunities to fly outside your comfort zone. There’s far more in our lives to discover.” Class President Anna Gosselin nostalgically reflected on the seniors’ experiences throughout their years together in Harborfields, leaving them with a quote sent to her by her grandmother: “Remember yesterday with pride, live today with enthusiasm and look to tomorrow with confidence.” In an unconventional but entertaining speech, valedictorian Jacob Siegel discussed the “organized chaos” of his infamous backpack before relaying wisdom gained by observing his family’s new puppy. “The best advice, in my opinion, is that given to us by our dogs,” Siegel said. “They have no bias and they never try to trick or mislead us. I implore every one of the graduates of the Class of 2022 to listen to my dog, and try to do things you enjoy for the sake of doing them, not for
a reward and surely not to please others.” The day’s featured speaker, as chosen by the students, was English teacher Casey Sturm. Focusing on concepts of time, he told the seniors, “Don’t lose sight of what you’re capable of. Don’t limit your future because of your perception of the past. In the words of the great Ferris Bueller, ‘Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop to look around once in a while, you could miss it.’” In an emotional final address to the students he nurtured for four years, Russo lauded them for embracing change and taking risks. “Throughout the years, your enthusiasm, kindness and respect for Harborfields has led us through some really challenging times, and I thank you for simply being the young men and women that you are,” he said. After members of the Harborfields Board of Education presented the green-and-white-clad seniors with their diplomas, the new graduates turned their tassels and threw their caps skyward, ready to move on to new chapters in their lives.

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School celebrated the Class of 2022 on June 24 at the school’s 60th commencement ceremony. The seniors marched on to the football field, clad in blue and white caps and gowns, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Senior Class President Maya Polese, and the national anthem, performed by the high school’s band under the direction of Vicki Henson. The ceremony also served as a farewell and salute to retiring Assistant Principal Leroy Cole. “Mr. Cole, your mark on the Elwood School District will last for decades,” Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert said. “We will fill your position but sir, you can never be replaced.” Dr. Bossert and Principal Carisa Burzynski both offered congratulatory remarks, praising the seniors for their achievements. Burzynski noted that the class had the highest ever number of students collectively

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

wounded soldiers and was honorably discharged on June 7, 1946. After the war and returning to Brooklyn, Ms. Sharkey worked as a nurse for a private doctor, later meeting her future husband John Sharkey, a fellow veteran, at the VA Hospital in Brooklyn. Since moving to Melville in 1972, she has been very active in the community, especially at the St. Elizabeth of Hungary RC Church in Melville, and now enjoys focusing on her growing family which includes her son, John Jr., daughter-in-law Nancy, her grandchildren and greatgrandchild. Legislator Donnelly thanked Ms. Sharkey for her service in person, joined by John Jr. and
Nancy Sharkey, on June 10 when he presented her with a County Proclamation in front of their home. He further acknowledged and recognized her later that day during the Legislature’s Third Women Veterans Appreciation Day Virtual ceremony, held via Zoom. “Lillian Sharkey served at a time when it was out of the ordinary for women to be in the military. It was incredible to hear her compelling stories and memories. A true trailblazer, she is an inspiration for all service people, both male and female, who came after her,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I am humbled and grateful to have met Lillian Sharkey and it was a privilege to honor her.”

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently recognized 100 yearold former member of the United States Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), Lillian Sharkey of Melville as his 2022 Suffolk County Women Veterans Appreciation Day honoree. Elwood Receives Treasure Trove Of Sen. John H. Glenn Artifacts The Elwood School District recently received a treasure trove of documents relating to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s namesake, U.S. senator and famed astronaut John Glenn. The extraordinary pieces of living history came courtesy of Maryland resident Holly Geddes, the daughter of Willard Adams, the district’s very first Board of Education president. Among the highlights is a November 1962 letter from then-Col. Glenn to Mr. Adams, explaining why a mail delay caused the astronaut to be unable to attend the dedication ceremony for the school building named after him. In this letter, Col. Glenn writes, “I deeply regret that I was unable to contact you earlier and thank you for the honor you have bestowed upon me. It is truly a great privilege that our accomplishments in space are considered to be worthy of commemoration.… We have had a large volume of mail, and that, coupled with our move from Langley Field, Virginia, to Houston, resulted in some mail difficulties.” The artifacts – also including a copy of the 1963 book “Colonel John Glenn...A Man in Orbit,” commemorative firstday cover envelopes for the 1962 Project Mercury stamp and a July 1963 letter from President John F. Kennedy to Mr. Adams – will eventually be placed on display at the high school as pieces of living history. “It is unfortunate that Sen. Glenn was never able to visit our school,” Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert said. “He would have been very proud of the outstanding way his name is represented each day by our students, faculty and staff.”

Students Run Their Own Business To Benefit Autism Support
Students in Harborfields High School’s career transition class worked hard throughout the year to raise $1,1000 for the Nassau Suffolk Autism Society of America. Baking dog biscuits and creating greeting cards to sell to the school community, the students were involved in every aspect of running their
own business, learning about designing products, taking orders, keeping inventory, selling directly to customers, and monitoring business expenses and profits. For Autism Awareness Month, the school’s varsity softball team also chipped in and sold T-shirts during one
of their games for donations to NSASA. A parent-run organization serving over 4,000 families on Long Island, NSASA works to support individuals with autism in local communities, providing free educational, social and recreational opportunities to families touched by autism.

Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study
examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.
