Reynolds, PhD. The WWBA series is named after Whitman’s book, Democratic Vistas, originally published in 1871. Then, I have a front row seat to all the pretty preparation. Honestly, my life is fairly dull and repetitive, not exactly the stuff of fine cinema. Well, except for that one time with Squeegee the Snail – but I digress. Mostly, it’s a lot of laps and fanning my fins to see if they’ve grown back sufficiently (still a work in progress, but coming along nicely). Too bad I couldn’t tag along for the movie. Maybe I’ll catch it on TV when it comes around. Hope my human still has that portable bowl for me to travel in. I would like to tag along, but the pet store told her I might be susceptible to something called “motion sickness” in the car. Since I can’t go along, I do my best to entertain her whenever she enters the room, in the hope that she might linger just a bit longer. I perform my tricks for her, everything from diving for flakes the moment she drops them in the tank to giving little “love pecks” on her finger when she even so much as touches the water. Sometimes it works, and she’ll stay and have her cereal while perched on the counter next to me; but most times, it’s just some nonsense about “running late” and “see you later Buddy.” The only quality time my human and I have is when she’s busy cooking.

with Buddy the Betta With all the fuss over this new film, “The Secret Life of Pets,” I thought it only appropriate to provide my own account of this socalled hidden existence we all allegedly cultivate when our humans are away. First off, (spoiler alert) I have never taken to the sewers or made my way to Brooklyn looking for adventure. No, my exploration is confined to the four corners of my aquatic kingdom, where I examine every leaf of my plant and inspect each piece of gravel daily; you know, just to see if anything has changed overnight. While my human feeds me twice a day, I must say the time between meals could be a bit closer. What she does for all those hours in between, I’ll never know. I’ve often thought

In suggesting the limited equity co-op alternative, Supervisor Petrone noted that they had been successful elsewhere in the country as a way of creating units where residents could earn equity while making rental-level monthly payments. Limited equity cooperatives are designed to provide affordable home ownership to qualified income eligible residents by allowing residents to purchase shares in the development for a minimal amount of equity investment. In the case of this co-
op, purchasers will pay the equivalent of two months’ maintenance as a down-payment and there is no mortgage or other type of financing required for the purchaser. For the one-bedroom units, it is anticipated that the down-payment would be between $2,212 and $3,000, depending on the income level, and the monthly maintenance charges would be between $1,106 and $1,500. Residents will build equity because part of their monthly payments will go towards the reduction of a $10.8
million tax exempt bond used to finance the construction. The equity build up is equivalent to the remaining amount of the bond after amortization. The limited equity cooperative is structured to encourage long term stakeholders in the community. As such, shareholders will accrue equity benefits over time through the payoff of bond debt. During this time, Ms. Friedman was approached by well-known Autism expert Jason Reise to sit on the board of directors of AutismNetworks.com, a non-profit organization established in Suffolk County to address the growing need for special education services. Ms. Friedman is the co-founder of the Marsh Women Executive’s Business to Business (WEBB) Network, which boasts over 500 members and is designed to assist women with networking professionally and personally. Ms. Friedman has been the face of the Marsh WEBB for over a decade and often partners with Dress for Success and other organizations to do clothing drives and mentoring activities for women in need of support.
Ms. Friedman has touched many other lives by volunteering at the VA Hospital, providing Big Brothers & Big Sisters mentoring, organizing book and toy drives, serving as a Cornell Alumni Admissions Ambassador and spending time with local senior citizens at assisted living facilities. Most recently, Ms. Friedman served a threeyear term as a member of the Suffolk County Women’s Advisory Commission and greatly assisted that Commission in positioning itself for the future. She is currently a member of Suffolk County Youth Board Coordinating Council. “As diverse as her support and interests may be, the common theme in Ms. Friedman’s activities is her passion for helping people,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “Her volunteerism has no boundaries and exemplifies a vibrant humanitarian spirit. Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) continued its five part 2016 series, Democratic Vistas: Voices of Democracy, on Sunday, July 10th, with speeches by Whitman Scholars Ed Folsom, PhD, and David S. Reynolds, PhD. The WWBA series is named after Whitman’s book, Democratic Vistas, originally published in 1871. The event was free and open to the public, and was sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities. Ed Folsom, PhD, shared Whitman’s lament over the passive nature of readership in America
at that time. Whitman urged Americans to be active readers in order to be informed voters. Folsom also discussed the significance of the use of Whitman’s book title Democratic Vistas as the headline for The New York Times reporting of President Obama’s Inauguration in 2009. David S. Reynolds, PhD, presented a speech entitled “Whitman’s Prescriptions for a Healthy Democracy: Physiology, Poetry, and Antebellum Culture.” The speech covered the recent discovery of the series of articles written by Walt Whitman under the
pseudonym Mose Velsor, and compared Whitman’s Diet and Exercise plan to that of Ben Franklin and others of his era. Democratic Vistas: Voices of Democracy Series will continue on Thursday, August 4th, at 6:30 p.m., with Environmental Democracy. The event will feature speeches by Assemblyman Steve Englebright and Meteorologist Tom Wysmuller. Susan F. Friedman, an attorney and advocate for children and families has been selected by Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro as the District 17 Woman of Distinction for 2016. A Dix Hills resident for 15 years, Ms. Friedman’s first contribution to the community was launching the “SouperBowl Sunday” program through the South Huntington Jewish Center. The program has evolved into an annual event that has provided over 600 lunches for residents in Suffolk County emergency housing on Superbowl Sunday. After establishing the “SouperBowl Sunday” program, Ms. Friedman turned her attention to her school district when she began volunteering as a parent member on the Committee for Special Education in the Half Hollow Hills Central School District. As a parent member, Ms. Friedman has been supportive and

Summer Arts Festival The annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival week five starts Tuesday, July 19th and runs through Sunday, July 24th. The performances begin at 8:30 p.m. every night, except the Tuesday Night Family Series, which starts at 7:30 p.m. The performances are held at the Chapin Rainbow Stage, Heckscher Park, located on Prime Avenue and Main Street in Huntington. All performances are free and open to the general public. The Huntington Community Band will perform on Wednesday, July 20th, for their fourth performance with guest conductor Don Sherman and soloist Megan Lyons Piccolo for “ALL THAT JAZZ,” a night that features an eclectic mix of exciting jazz music as part of a weeklong celebration of Jazz! Performing hits that span the history of jazz, from Dixieland to contemporary
jazz, audiences will be left humming the classic tunes that they love! A special pre-concert begins at 7:30 p.m. with the HCB “BIG” BAND with guest conductor Dan Bilawski! On Thursday, July 21st, the Isotope Stompers, an exhilarating seven-piece Dixieland Jazz Band, presents music that would sound right at home on the streets of New Orleans. Their style offers a “Chicago-style” Dixieland, incorporating traditional New Orleans repertoire with a more modern and swinging rhythmic drive than older ragtime styles. Trustee Sworn In The Northport–East Northport Board of Education conducted its annual reorganization meeting at the William J. Brosnan School on July 7th. Board of Education President Andrew Rapiejko was sworn in to a new three-year term and was
also re-appointed by the board to continue serving as its president. Trustee David Stein was also sworn in to serve as vice president, while trustee Allison Noonan was sworn in to a new three-year term. Trustee Lori McCue, who could not be present at the meeting, was sworn

Born in Azerbaijan and now living in New York, Amina Figarova composes and arranges all music for her group. She has toured extensively, developing a tight-knit ensemble with her husband and bandmate, flutist Bart Platteau, and has attained a distinctive and inimitable voice. Amina’s music strikes a perfect tone with beautiful harmonies that creates an absolutely unforgettable performance. Encouraging Peace In light of recent events in Dallas and around the country, Rabbi Yakov Saacks, Director of The Chai Center in Dix Hills, wants to encourage peace in the community. Rabbi Saacks brought cookies to the second precinct police station in Huntington on Sunday, July 10th, to show his appreciation for their hard work and sympathy for their fallen brothers. “They
are there to protect,” said Rabbi Saacks. “They are the only stop measure between peace and anarchy. God bless the souls of those that were gunned down in Dallas.” On Tuesday, July 12th, teens from the Chai Center’s CTeen group also delivered a sweet treat, along with some homemade gifts, to the second precinct to show their gratitude to those in

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

elected Nicholas Guiliano to the role of president and David Steinberg to the position of vice president for the 2016-2017 school year.
NEW AMBULANCE DEDICATED - The Dix Hills Fire Department recently dedicated a new state-of-the-art ambulance at a traditional wetdown ceremony held at Fire Headquarters. The Dix Hills Rescue Squad utilizes five Advanced Life Support ambulances and a First Responder Vehicle to serve the Dix Hills community. The Rescue Squad has over 80 volunteer members that respond out of three stations to both fire and medical emergencies, including motor vehicle accidents. The new ambulance is assigned to Company 2 at Fire Headquarters on East Deer Park Road.
