Volunteers Needed The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program seeks breast cancer survivors of all ages, race and ethnicity-men as well as women-to become volunteers. Thus, the program seeks a diverse group of volunteers to reﬂect the diversity of the people who are calling the hotline. The three-day training

program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays - September 12th, 19th and 26th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Adelphi University in Garden City. This indepth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

The End. {Part II} Approximately 5 hours later… Finally, the end was upon us, the grand lighthouse on the hill. Having missed the hours of operation due to our detours en route to Montauk Point, we didn’t have the opportunity to browse the gift shop or climb the tower this time around, although our prior experience with the latter had been, shall we say, less than impressive. While the Fire Island Lighthouse boasts a circular terrace to walk around the top and enjoy the scenic views below, Montauk has more of a ladder jutting up through a small hole in the ceiling, where, if you’re lucky, you can climb two steps - not even to the top - and poke your head out for a split second. Not exactly a full-service “tour,” to be sure. Far more exciting are the rocks surrounding the base of the building, providing picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean as its waves crash along the shoreline. On any given day, you can find tons of people carefully navigating the giant boulders as they make

their way from one side to another. Children, pets, senior citizens… all seem drawn to this spot. From there, we took a drive to several of the private beaches to scope out a nice sunset view. Navy Beach, Outer Beach… all were dotted with signs indicating the fines due if you dared park without the prestigious East Hampton town beach pass. How strictly was this rule enforced after dusk? We didn’t know; but, as the sun began to reach its golden hour, we decided it was worth the risk. And so, we found a rock wall to perch on overlooking the water, and we waited (one eye on the parking lot at all times, of course). Once the last rays had dissipated, we headed into town, the town which had been practically closed down during the last of our pilgrimages. What a difference the summer season makes. Restaurant after restaurant, outdoor patios bustling with music and people enjoying cocktails, stores filled with novelty items and “beachy” merchandise, a summertime

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan paradise to be sure. As the clock ticked to approximately 10 p.m., we of course decided we were slightly hungry once again, and in need of just a small snack for the road. After eventually being seated at one of the aforementioned outdoor patios, we settled in to people watch. Little did we know that the most fascinating spectacle would be surrounding our very own table. On the one side, a young woman argued vehemently with the manager over her credit card charge, demanding it be reversed immediately. On the other, a family with several children was finishing up their meal, when I heard the unmistakeable commotion of a child getting sick, right in the leftovers bag. His darling siblings gathered ‘round to witness the spectacle, while the parents, seemingly unaffected by this, remained calmly seated at the table, finishing their cocktails. Check, please! And that, ladies and gentlemen, was The End of The End for us for that evening. ’Til next time.

New Board Established The Elwood Union Free School District’s Board of Education held their annual reorganization meeting on July 6th in preparation for the 20172018 school year. Although unable to attend the meeting, Julia Fried, who was elected to serve on the

board for another threeyear term, was named president of the board as well in a unanimous vote. In addition, board trustee James Tomeo was elected to serve as vice president and was sworn in by the newly appointed district clerk, Mary Lou

Janelli. New board trustee Becky Marcus was also unable to attend the meeting but was sworn in on July 11th for a threeyear term surrounded by proud family members, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert and vice-president Tomeo.

DONATIONS PRESENTED - At their end-of-year luncheon on Wednesday, June 21, The Huntington Club, Inc. presented donations to several local charities which support children and their families. Receiving checks for $2,000 each were representatives from A Mother’s Kiss and the St. Charles Auxiliary, Northport Chapter. Donations were also collected for the St. Francis Church Baby Corner. The luncheon was held at Captain Bill’s in Bay Shore.

Students Recognized Several Northport High School students recently received generous scholarships and donations from the Northport Running Club, who strive to give back to the community. Bill Fleming, the organization’s race director for the Doug Wood 5K, presented seniors Evan Atherton and Abby Caulfield with the Doug Wood Scholarship. The club awards two of these academic scholarships annually to members of

the Northport High School cross-country/track and field programs. In addition, the Northport High School 4 x 800-meter relay team, consisting of students Elijah Claiborne, Isiah Claiborne, Tyler Dolhausen and Dan O’Connor, were gifted with a $1,000 check to cover their travel expenses to attend the New Balance National Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. Here, the team set a Suffolk County record in the race with a time of

7:37. “The Northport Running Club has over 500 members and we realize the importance of giving back to help our community,” said Northport Running Club President John DeSpagna. “We take great pride in being able to give back to high school students who are the future of our community and giving them the opportunity to succeed.”

New Trustee Sworn In The Harborfields Central School District’s Board of Education gathered for their annual reorganization meeting on July 11th to officially welcome their newest trustee and select their president and vice president for the 20172018 school year. Trustee Christopher Kelly was sworn in by

District Clerk Sharon Whelan, joining the board for a three-year term. Board member David Steinberg was also sworn in for another term and was elected unanimously by his fellow board members to serve as board president, taking the seat of Nicholas Giuliano, who retired from the board in June.

In addition, trustee Suzie Lustig was elected unanimously by the board to take on the role as vice president for the new school year and was sworn in. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni also took the oath of office during the meeting.

Pink Aid Grant The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from the Pink AidLI Chapter. This grant helps fund the salary of a bilingual social worker who provides counseling, patient navigation and support services at Nassau University Medical Center and the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to uninsured and underinsured Nassau and Suffolk County patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The grant also allows the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to support non-medical emergent needs for uninsured or underinsured Nassau and Suffolk County patients

and their families while undergoing treatment and/or post-operative care for breast cancer. These services include transportation to and from treatment, wigs and other prosthesis, grocery cards and assistance with household bills. “Pink Aid is proud to support the important assistance offered by Adelphi’s Breast Cancer Program and the bilingual social work and navigation services they provide. We are so pleased that our funding will allow critical support to reach even more women on Long Island,” says Ali Mitchell, the president of Pink Aid Long Island.
