Courage
Like most of you, I have been spellbound by the daily news regarding the young soccer players and their coach trapped deep underground in one of the many dangerous caves in the area. There was even a point a few days ago where the experts believed it would be too dangerous to move them, and one thought was even to leave them stranded for many weeks until the flood waters subsided. However, like all of you who watched the news, the whole world breathed a huge sigh of relief when the last of them was brought to safety. All of this effort had to be based upon a tremendous amount of courage from all concerned. Thinking about this, it prompted me to write a short piece on the subject of courage … something we all take for granted until it happens to us. Let’s go forward and study this together. While dictionaries can supply us with several definitions, the one that I like the most is: the abilty of the individual to act in a specific manner regardless of the potential outcome. Bridging this back to the mindset of the many divers and Navy Seals who were in charge of the rescue, just think for a moment of the potential actions and consequential results that they had
to puzzle over before making their final decision. Now, it’s time to bridge this thought back to our daily lives and how a high degree and dedication to courage can change our daily lives. I am going to list a few based on my own experience and, after this, I’m sure you will be able to add some of your own. Let’s start ... Courage is: Being 15 years-old and contracting Polio at summer camp and, while in the hospital on the first night, overhearing one of the nurses saying that in the morning I would either be completely free of the disease or be restricted to a life of medicine. That alone took a great deal of courage to believe that everything was right and I would be okay in the morning. I was right. At 14 years-old, coming home from school and being told by your mother that your father had died that morning from a sudden and massive heart attack. It took all the courage I had to make sure my mother and brother would be okay and we would get through this together as a family. To get the news that your older brother fighting in the Korean war was captured and was now a prisoner ... it took several days of blind courage (and many phone
calls) to be told that he was freed, along with several others. What a relief. Much reflection and courage was needed while in the service to be promoted to a team leader. Knowing that I would be responsible for 15 soldiers’ lives in a combat situation ... and they all had faith in your leadership ability. It only took a few moments of thought to realize that I indeed had the courage to lead these troops on. In the end, it all worked out well with those concerned. One of the biggest tests of courage is having the ability to accept the challenges of the “golden years” and gracefully enter that domain without complaints, and having the courage to accept the daily challenges that it surely brings. As a final (yet very personal thought) just prior to sleeping, having the courage to review what happened that day, what was good and things not so good ... then hearing that quiet voice inside of you telling you that things will be better tomorrow, and having the courage to accept that. A bit corny? I don’t think so. Just remember that tomorrow will be the first day of the rest of your life. NEVER give up on your dreams, and always keep a positive attitude. PEACE.

Call Center Renamed On Saturday, June 7th, Legislator Sarah Anker was honored to join the Bocchimuzzo family, elected officials, friends and colleagues at the renaming of the 9-1-1 Call Center in Yaphank, in honor of Anthony “Tony” Bocchimuzzo. Bocchimuzzo, who passed away in July of 2017 at the age of 49, one week before his 50th birthday, was an invaluable member of both the Longwood community, the Coram Fire Department and the Suffolk County Police Department. with Jamie Lynn Ryan “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” ~ John Lennon If there is one thing we have all learned throughout our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best. We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know. The rest is mere wistfulness. This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop
for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really. My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.
Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air? Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life. And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ... Nothing, so far as I can tell. There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

PCLI Sponsors Students Journalism has selected two outstanding high school journalists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., to join its 2018 Robert W. Greene Institute for High School Journalists. Taylor Yon, 16, and Zoe Gordon, 15, rising juniors at Marjory Stoneman The Stony Brook Douglas High School, journalists this July at University School of will join 24 other student Stony Brook University
where they will spend a week working in the School of Journalism’s multimedia newsroom, producing content across several media platforms. The annual journalism boot camp, which celebrates its 10th year this summer, honors the late Robert W. Greene, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and editor at Newsday.

In addition, Schneider noted that several of those killed in the Florida attack had ties to Long Island, including teacher Scott Beigel, a Dix Hills native. “We are eager to show them Long Island and have them meet journalism students from across the region,” Schneider said.

On February 14th, 2018, their lives and roles as student journalists were transformed when 17 students and staff members were killed in a mass shooting at the school. Northport High School student Emma Canfora recently spent an entire semester in Washington, D.C., as a participant of the Senate Page Program under New York State Sen. Charles Schumer. Only approximately 30 students nationwide are chosen each semester to participate in this program, where students are given the opportunity to learn
the inner workings of the nation’s capital and explore the legislative branch of government. Emma was the only student chosen from New York for the 2018 spring session, which ran from January to June. When Emma happened upon the program, she was determined to be selected. “I feel it’s our duty to be informed and involved in as many aspects of our government as possible,” she said, “so when I was the only student selected from New York, I was determined to take every opportunity and learn as much as possible.” Throughout the program, Emma had to keep up with her junioryear course load remotely, build new relationships with the other participants
and perform the duties of a Senate page, which consisted primarily of delivering correspondence between senators and distributing legislative material throughout the congressional complex. “Being a sort of fly on the wall in the Senate was an invaluable experience, and I learned a lot – especially about how to grow in tolerance for those who don’t necessarily hold the same political opinion as I do,” she said. “And it helped me further hone in on the direction I’d like to go in after high school – to pursue politics and really make a difference.” Photo courtesy of: Northport-East Northport Union Free School District
Wood Badge Training Award District Executive with the Suffolk County Boy Scouts for 3 years. In her professional capacity, she oversees 61 Scouting units, over 2,400 Scouts from ages 5 to 20, and works alongside over 1,000 unit and District volunteers. She participated in six days of outdoors sessions in Wood Badge Course # N2-404-17 for the group participation/instructional section, held at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in September 2017 and Schiff Scout Reservation in October 2017. In order to
complete the training, the Scouting volunteer leaders had to apply what they learned in a variety of selfdirected goals (the practical part of the course) within 18 months, which was accomplished in May 2018. Mrs. Jumper’s project was to grow membership in the prestigious Congressional Youth Award, a program that mirrors the Boy Scout Program in many ways but has been relatively unknown in the Scouting community of New York.
2018 Marks the 53rd anniversary of the Huntington Summer Arts Festival. From June 26th - August 12th, six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday, touring artists and ensembles will be featured on the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park for the annual summer FREE performance festival. The Huntington Summer Arts Festival is produced by the Town of Huntington and presented by the Huntington Arts Council. Additional support is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the County of Suffolk and Canon U.S.A., Inc. Compositions Selected Northport High School composers Olivia Mescallado, Katelyn Sullivan, Peter Mainetti and David Jung were selected by The Long Island Composer’s Alliance (LICA) to have their original music presented at the recent Hofstra
University concert, “Music By and For Students.” Each of the four pieces was performed exclusively by the Northport High School band and orchestra. In addition, David Jung’s octet, “The Barrier,” was selected by the organization as one of the winners of the
Arline Diamond Memorial Student Composer’s Award. This is the second year in a row that he has won this award. David’s piece was again performed at a LICA concert at the Huntington Library this past June.
Court Presentation Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland, Chairwoman of the Legislature’s Veterans Committee, welcomed Edward Gialella, Project Director of the Suffolk County Veterans Court to present before the Veterans Committee on July 10th. The Suffolk County Veterans Court is a specialized part of the Suffolk County District and County Criminal Courts. It provides a means to successfully help veterans
by diverting them from the traditional criminal justice system. The Veterans Court offers veterans a chance to address their problems or issues through treatment, rehabilitative p r o g r a m m i n g , reinforcement and judicial monitoring. If they successfully complete the program, the veteran’s charge will be reduced or dismissed. “I was honored to have the Project Director
of the Veterans Court present before the Veterans Committee,” said Legislator Berland. “I want to thank everyone at the Veterans Court for all they do to help our veterans through intervention, mentoring and treatment.
