As Chief Fellow at Stony Brook Hospital, Dr. Hendler represented fellows’ interests to faculty and administration. Dr. Hendler’s interests include lung cancer and melanoma. “In recent years, revolutionary steps have been made in how we treat these and many other types of cancers. It has been fascinating for physicians and great news for our patients” said Dr. Hendler. Students Of Merit Recognized At the Northport-East Northport’s last board meeting of the 2018-19 school year, not only were two outstanding students of the month recognized, but all of the outstanding science, math and art department students who have set themselves apart this year by winning numerous awards — both county and statewide. Dr. Izzet Mergen addressed the board to introduce both the Art Student of the Month, Shannon Wines, and Music Student of the Month, Peter Mainetti. Shannon was commended by Dr. Mergen and art teachers throughout her career for having a tremendous talent and work ethic and an incredibly “diverse AP portfolio rendered with stunning visual imagery,
but the pieces also deliver her vision into creative and thought-provoking narratives.” Shannon is a recipient of a Scholar Artist Award of Merit at LIU Post, nine Scholastic key awards this year alone and received a presidential scholarship from Marist College, which she will be attending in the fall for Fashion Design. Peter Mainetti, an extremely dedicated pianist, violinist and composer, has participated in nearly all things musical that Northport High School has to offer and succeeded extraordinarily. “Peter Mainetti is singularly the finest musician I have ever had in my music classroom in my 28 years as an educator,” said music teacher Dr. Frank Doyle. Peter has been recognized at local, statewide and national
levels for his compositional work, including a recipient of the Arlene Diamond Award from the Long Island Composers’ Alliance, a NAfME All-National composer and many more. Additionally, more than 100 students who’ve received a myriad of honors in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math were recognized by the board and commended by corresponding department chairs for their extraordinary dedication to their academic career. Examples awards students were recognized for include winning first place in the Brookhaven National Lab Science Fair, receiving the Best in Show award at the LI Media Arts Show and being named a Rensselaer Medal recipient.

PSEG Employee Helps Beautify ACLD Gardens and Grounds The grounds around ACLD’s (Adults & Children with Learning & Developmental Disabilities) Bethpage complex are cleaner, greener and sprouting with new growth since a group of gardening volunteers from PSEG Long Island paid a recent visit. The group of volunteers included Charlie McCaffery

Girl Scout Junior Troop 255 at Burr Intermediate School in Commack recently completed their Bronze Award. All Bronze Awards are required to have the components of leadership, sustainability, and voluntarism. The girls have been recycling bottles at Burr over the past three years. They have used the money for donations to families in need, people with cancer, and most recently created a “feel better” chair for the nurse’s office and a “reading’ chair for the library at Burr. The girls presented their chairs to the nurses and librarians at Burr, and fifth grader Isabel Figueroa told the group, “Troop 255 would like to present these chairs to the nurse’s office and library to say thank you for three awesome years. I hope when someone sits on this chair in the nurse’s office she feels better and I hope when someone sits

RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Zagster and Bethpage Federal Credit Union today announced the credit union's sponsorship of Suffolk County’s Bike Share program, Bethpage Ride, the first of its kind on Long Island. The generous sponsorship will allow the County to launch the bike share system this August with 100 bikes and 24 stations throughout four communities across Suffolk County including Patchogue and Babylon. “Our bike share program will not only reduce congestion on our roadways, but will help provide the critical first and last-mile connection when using public transit,” said County Executive Bellone. “Thanks to our official sponsor Bethpage Federal Credit Union, this summer, residents throughout Suffolk will be able to go to a nearby train station, park, or downtown area, and right through an app on their phone, have instant access to a comfortable, userfriendly bike.” “What a tremendous asset for village residents and visitors to travel through our village and experience our greenway from Argyle Lake to Belmont park,” said Village of Babylon Mayor Ralph Scordino. “Bethpage is thrilled to fund Long Island’s very first bike share program, a world-wide concept that millions benefit from daily, that will now be available right here on Long Island,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “There are countless benefits to the region, to the participating communities, to the residents, and also to visitors. Zagster is responsible for designing, building, financing and operating this first-of-its-kind regional bike-share program in Suffolk County – at no cost to County taxpayers, towns, or villages. This program will boost the local economy by increasing tourism, extend the reach of existing transit networks, and will provide the critical lastmile connection between transportation hubs, popular destinations, and our vibrant downtown areas. The goals of this regional bike share program include decreasing the use of the automobile as the primary mode of transportation, encouraging a more active, healthier lifestyle by providing bicycles for intermittent recreational use, and establishing a stronger bicycle network in Suffolk County, complete with new bike lanes which will support infrastructure. The program includes modern technology features that can be accessed through smartphone devices, making it simple and accessible. Once launched, users will have the ability to download an app and will either be able to pay per ride or buy a membership. Riders have several different rental options with Bethpage Ride. Riders can pay $1 per 15 minutes, but can also opt for a monthly plan for $10 or a yearly plan for $60 per year. Both plans allow for unlimited trips of up to 30 minutes. “BikeShare programs are one of the most popular and convenient forms of transportation across the country and it’s exciting to see this trend established on

A completed master plan and suite of recommendations are expected by the end of 2019. The Regional Bike-Share program complements County Executive Bellone’s Connect Long Island Plan – a regional transportation and development initiative that promotes sustainable long-term economic growth in Suffolk County. The plan calls for development around transit nodes, investment in enhancements to existing mass transit infrastructure, and implementation of new rapid transit systems to create a robust transit network that connect regional assets and downtowns.

Middle Schoolers Move Up As a celebration of the end of an era, Northport Middle School and East Northport Middle School commended their graduating eighth graders on June 24 and June 25, respectively. Both ceremonies were held in the packed NHS auditorium, where students will start their high school careers in the fall. “I would like to thank the parents who shepherded these young individuals across this bridge called middle school,” Northport Middle School principal Dr. Timothy Hoss remarked.
“They are one of the most talented student bodies I’ve ever encountered, and I’m confident they will do great things.” During East Northport Middle School’s ceremony, Principal Pasquale DeStefano addressed the graduating class, advising them to challenge themselves to grow, and to do good regardless of what others are doing — even when it’s difficult. “Don’t ever let failure defeat you,” he urged them, “but see it as an opportunity to build the strength that will carry
you through the rest of your life.” After numerous academic and community awards were presented to outstanding students, each member of the future Class of 2023 received a certificate of completion, crossing the threshold into a new and exciting season of life. Continuing his education, Dr. Singhal completed his residency at North Shore LIJ-Lenox Hill Hospital followed by one year of internal medicine at Mount Sinai. As Chief Fellow at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2015, Dr. Singhal developed a learning curriculum for fellows and led many teaching conferences. Prior to joining NYCBS,

Helping To Stamp Out Hunger 45 JPMorgan Chase employees and their families spent the evening of May 11th at a large warehouse in Hauppauge giving back to the community to help Stamp Out Hunger for the Island Harvest Food Bank. The JPMorgan Chase volunteers helped to pack 400,000 lbs. of food that was collected by mail carriers earlier in the day
for the Island Harvest Food Bank. JPMorgan has been participating in this program since 2015, as the firm is committed to addressing the needs of those living with food insecurity on Long Island, an issue for every 1 in every 10 Long Islanders. Island Harvest Food Bank supports more than 300,000 residents
