Adolescence can be a trying time for teenagers and their parents. According to the American Psychological Association, parents and caregivers face an entirely new set of tasks to deal with the changing needs of children as they reach adolescence. The changes that accompany adolescence include physical, cognitive and social changes, and parents may need to adopt an entirely new approach to parenting as they deal with the changing needs of their children during their period in their lives. The APA notes that adolescents often crave greater independence and autonomy, and this desire is a natural part of their development process. It’s important that parents of adolescents find a way to maintain the familial bonds they and their children have developed up to this point, while also allowing increasingly mature teens a level of autonomy that can benefit them throughout their lives. According to clinical psychologist William Stixrud, Ph.D., decades of psychological research has shown that a lack of perceived control leads people to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, and resigned. So adolescents who feel that they have control over the direction of their lives, feelings which can be strengthened when they are given some level of autonomy as teenagers, are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, or resigned as adults.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke pose significant threats to anyone who spends ample time outdoors in hot weather. The Mayo Clinic says symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, fatigue, moist skin with goose bumps, muscle cramps, nausea, and headache. into a cool location, they may develop heatstroke. Heatstroke arises when one’s body temperature climbs to 104 degrees, according to Penn Medicine. A body at this temperature may experience damage to the muscles, heart, kidneys, and brain. Flushed skin, altered mental state and rapid breathing may occur when suffering from heatstroke. A notable symptom of heatstroke is that perspiration stops completely. Rehydration, cooling the body and loosening tight clothes can help prevent serious consequences.

Dickinson Alumnus Sews Masks For Community
Dickinson Avenue Elementary School journalist Anna Katzmaier was thrilled to write a story about Northport Middle School eighth grader, Lia Edlin Miller, who, while quarantined, has sewn more than 1,700 masks for the Northport-East Northport community. Please see below for Anna’s story, published in the virtual edition of the student newsletter, “Dickinson ROARS.” Dickinson Alum Makes Almost 1700 Masks By Anna Katzmaier Since New York mandated masks in public spaces and medical masks are hard to find, we are in need of homemade masks.
Lia Edlin Miller, eighth grader at Northport Middle School and Dickinson alum, has made over 1300 masks for the community so far. I have known Lia for a long time and she is a role model for everyone! “I spend about 4 to 6 hours each day and usually make 40 or 60 masks during that time,” she told me in a phone interview. Lia uses two layers of 100% cotton, along with regular elastic, to make the masks in various patterns. She cuts two rectangles from different patterns of fabric, then sews them together back to back with the elastic, leaving a small gap. She then turns them inside out and irons them,
stitching around the edges one more time, leaving no gap. Like every other quarantined student, Lia has to do online schooling, but still finds time in the day to make masks. “I started with a couple a day, but got better and made more each day,” she said. She accepts donations for her masks and uses some of the money to buy more supplies. She said with any extra money she makes, she will be donating it to Tri-CYA, a local initiative for children and lowincome families. Senator Gaughran Introduces Bill To Protect Villages From Town Infringement On Village Sovereignty Senator Jim Gaughran announced legislation, S.8654, to protect villages from a Township seeking to infringe on their local authority of their shorelines. The bill will require a town to seek an informal opinion from the NYS Attorney General prior to amending Town Code when a village or city alleges a violation of their rights under State Navigation Law. This will prevent Towns from hastily passing laws that negatively impact small municipalities by ensuring a transparent procedure and unbiased outside opinion. This
bill was influenced by the recent law rushed through the Town of Huntington that infringes on the Villages of Asharoken, Lloyd Harbor, Northport, and Huntington Bay’s sovereignty and jurisdiction to regulate their shorelines. The recent Town of Huntington legislation, passed by the Republican Town Board Majority, imposes a $40 mooring fee on residents and $200 fee on non-residents who moor their boats in town water. Assemblyman Steve Stern will sponsor the bill in the State Assembly.
Senator Jim Gaughran said “Local sovereignty is the bedrock of American democracy. I am outraged by the Town’s attempts to bulldoze Village authority with this new local law, and I fully support the mayoral efforts to protect their jurisdiction to regulate. This law is nothing more than a shameless money grab passed on a virtual Town meeting amid a global pandemic. I urge the Town to stand down from infringing on village authority and the dangerous precedent this sets.”

Students across Northport-East Northport Union Free School District ended the 201920 school year with a bang. Elementary school students from Bellerose, Dickinson, Norwood, Ocean, Fifth Avenue and Pulaski Road waved from the passenger seats of their parents’ cars during car parades and moving up ceremonies. East Northport and Northport Middle Schools welcomed students on June 15 to celebrate eighth graders departure from middle school and transition to Northport High School. Cars were decorated with signs and
words of appreciation from students as they drove past their teachers, lined up along the schools’ bus loops. Elementary and middle school students also recently celebrated their last days of school. The “ROAR” event encouraged students to make noise outside of their homes, using pots, pans and other noise-makers, to celebrate their accomplishments. Northport High School students also enjoyed waving to their teachers from their cars as they paraded through the school’s bus loop on May 29. Teachers held signs that read ‘We miss you,”

Health Care Heroes Get Energized Over the past several months, PSEG Long Island has been helping to energize hundreds of health care heroes by providing food to local hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic. Recently, a lunch was sent to the Northport VA Medical Center’s Community
Living Center for employees who are caring for military veterans in a nursing home setting. “Normally during this time of the year, you can find our employees in bright orange T-shirts, weeding at the Northport VA Vietnam Veteran Memorial Garden, packing food for Island Harvest and participating in dozens of other community service

Medical and ancillary staff feasted on baked clams, meatballs, penne ala vodka with shrimp, two salads, several pasta dishes, chicken Milanese, chicken parmigiana and drinks. PSEG Long Island has a long history of engaging in community support at VA – whether it’s cleaning up the grounds, decorating for the holidays or crafting with veterans at the long term care home. When these activities had to be paused with social distancing protocols, providing fuel for the caregivers is another way to provide support. “It bears repeating that PSEG Long Island and the PSEG Long Island Veterans employee business resource group have been doing so much for the veterans and staff at Northport for years and it’s really appreciated,” said Joe Sledge, Health Systems Specialist, Northport VA Medical Center. Throughout April and May, dinners, lunches and breakfasts, protein bars and energy drinks along with uplifting thank you notes from PSEG Long Island employees, have been sent to healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients across Long Island. By the end of June, the initiative will
have provided meals and snacks at more than 30 health facilities across Long Island and the Rockaways to bring cheer to healthcare workers during this unprecedented time. Along with the food donations for healthcare heroes, PSEG Long Island has provided additional support for its customers: The PSEG Foundation, provided Island Harvest Food Bank with a $45,000 grant to reduce food insecurity during the pandemic. The PSEG Foundation gave a $25,000 grant to United Way of Long Island’s UNITED TOGETHER: A Response Fund for COVID-19. The money will help alleviate disruptions to family life by providing eligible applicants with critical basic needs of food and household supplies. The PSEG Foundation is supporting the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island’s Disaster Relief Coalition with a $25,000 grant to address critical needs of children and families Crews made emergency upgrades to electric service at hospitals to power temporary facilities for additional patients requiring care. PSEG Long Island has temporarily suspended electric service shut-offs to residential and business customers for nonpayment. PSEG Long Island

JGHS Class of 2020 Music Department Awards Ceremony While the end of the school year for the Class of 2020 was not what many students anticipated, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students have shown tremendous strength, resiliency and unity. That sentiment couldn’t have been more true on June 15 as students, teachers, faculty and staff gathered virtually to celebrate the John Glenn High School Music Department Awards. “It truly is so nice to see all of you,” John Glenn High School Principal Carisa Burzynski said, addressing the students in attendance. “While tonight’s ceremony may look different than you had anticipated, we did not want your accomplishments to go unnoticed.” The event, hosted by the Elwood Music Sponsors Association, was a wonderful night of celebration as students received scholarships and awards from their teachers, who shared kind words about each recipient.
Music Sponsors scholarships, presented by Mrs. Hoolahan, included band, chorus, kickline, NYSCAME and SCMEA scholarships, as well as the Susan Curcio Service, Rita Harrison and Alan Walker Theater scholarships. Awards, including the National Chorus Award, Distinguished Service Award, Louis Armstrong National Award for Jazz and John Philip Sousa National Band Award, were also presented to deserving seniors. Additionally, music teachers, Rachel Nagle, Karen Gellert and Vickie Henson bid farewell to seniors involved in the school’s chorus, orchestra, band and Tri-M Music Honor Society. The evening also featured a moment of silence in remembrance of former Board of Education President Julia Fried, who recently passed away after a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. “Hey mantra was always, ‘It’s for the kids,’”
Elwood Music Sponsors Vice President Christine Kawecki said. “She will truly be missed.” To conclude the evening, those in attendance congratulated Mrs. Gellert on her retirement and thanked her for her contributions to the music department. Principal Burzynski thanked students and teachers for their years of commitment and dedication to the music department. “It has been said that music is the great uniter — an incredible force. Northport High School juniors Erik Keifer and Dilan Piscatello learned a powerful lesson from their teachers: “to never give up and to keep persisting.” They put that mantra to the test in March when they began to work together to build a trivia and debate gaming platform for iOS. Following school closures and quarantine regulations, Erik, like many, was feeling disconnected from his friends and teachers. “I missed talking about sports, music and pop culture,” he said. “I wanted to design an app to bring me closer to those people.” With Dilan’s help, Erik’s original idea to create a sports talk show gravitated into a trivia game with a debate platform. The app, “DopeIt,” connects people through a mutual love of sports, music, pop culture and movies. Each month, the topics rotate to engage players of various interests. The trivia section offers users a chance to earn points by answering multiple choice or true or false questions based on the month’s topic. The catch is, users are only allowed three wrong answers per day. The blog discussion also allows players to earn 0 to 250 points by answering a single short answer question, which changes weekly based on theme. While Erik is the master behind the game’s content, Dilan is equally as crucial
to the game’s development. He put six years of coding experience to the test when translating Erik’s ideas into useable code. “Just like you can learn English or Spanish, you can learn app development,” he said. “It’s a language shift.” The duo was determined to get the app approved by the end of the school year, to which they were successful, but not without a few roadblocks, having had to tweak the program several times before it was launched on June 1. Erik thanked his Northport teachers for their lessons on perseverance. “From this app, I’ve learned that things in life don’t come easy. From their words, me and Dilan were able to keep pushing forward. If I didn’t have my teachers, I don’t think I would have been able to do that.” Dilan added, “I hope people can look at this app to start their own passions. I think it’s the perfect time to start.” During a videoconference with Dilan and Erik, Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer congratulated the two on their feat, acknowledging their hard work and dedication to staying connected during a difficult time. “It’s great to hear these kinds of stories,” he said. “We’ve been working really hard to keep people connected and it’s hard because its new for people.
To know that you two took the initiative on this and to know a little bit about your motivation, it’s just fantastic.” Additionally, Mr. Banzer thanked Erik for his Letter to the Editor, published in the New York Times on May 31, which credited the hard work that Northport-East Northport staff, administrators and teachers put into the district’s distance learning plan. Erik wrote, “Online learning is dope! I like making my own schedule and I learn better watching the recorded videos over and over again.” He even suggested that, once classes resume, teachers record their lessons so that students can re-watch the material if they are confused or for studying purposes. Mr. Banzer said that the district is working on a learning plan for the fall that considers different scenarios and will be seeking feedback from many groups, including students. In the meantime, Erik and Dilan will remain diligent in producing content for DopeIt with plans to feature music related questions in July, followed by pop culture in August. “It’s always a joy and a pleasure to connect with our students.” Mr. Banzer said. “Congratulations Erik and Dilan on what you’ve done.”

The Dix Hills Fire Department Meets the Challenge of COVID-19 Just months ago, very few Americans could have imagined how devastating a pandemic could be. As a group, first responders are always in harm’s way. They are trained to address all types of situations with dedication, organization and professional resolve. Though it is part of the job, being a dedicated, tough, resilient group of individuals certainly helped the Dix Hills Fire Department effectively face the onslaught of COVID-19 when it began. In commenting on meeting the challenge of COVID-19, Chief of Department Alan Berkowitz stated, “from day one, it was a team effort to protect the public and keep our own people safe. Our District Manager Scott Dalrymple, myself, the Board of Fire Commissioners and Chiefs regularly shared information and brainstormed safety policies. We quickly determined what supplies were needed and where they were available. Scott was able to obtain everything including face masks, gowns, half- and full-face coverings, and paper and cleaning supplies to ensure our ability to
continue responding and saving lives.” “We also used multiple Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and infection prevention supplies from Suffolk County Fire Rescue and did our own acquisitions to keep our employees and members safe,” Mr. Dalrymple noted. “The first step in winning this battle against the coronavirus is that you must have a safe home environment to work from in order to keep the public safe, and that meant instituting new policies and procedures in our firehouses.” The Dix Hills firehouses were closed to the public unless there was an emergency situation. No members or employees were permitted building entry without temperature checks from a new thermal camera, which was likely the first to be introduced in a firehouse on Long Island. Alerts were set and individuals were double checked. Those who still had temperatures above set temperature levels of 101.1°F were sent home. An Air Scrubber was deployed in the Communication Center of the Dix Hills firehouse on Deer Park Road which is used 24/7.
The air is continually cleaned to hospital-grade air every few hours. “Our vehicles are in constant use and regularly cleaned. We took precautions to another level for the greatest safety by adapting Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) to spray disinfectant,” Commissioner Larry Feld added. “After spraying and wiping down our ambulances, we used ultraviolet light to destroy any potential COVID-19 virus. After 20 minutes of high dose UV exposure, everything is sanitized.” In addition, the Dix Hills Fire Department has raised transparency by regularly communicating with the community through its website, social media and direct mailings. Meeting the challenge of COVID-19 has been brutal on people all over the world, but those on the front lines such as the men and women of the Dix Hills Fire Department have met this crisis head on without hesitation. With this kind of dedication, the health and safety of Dix Hills residents will be protected as the virus is defeated.
