So Operation: Explore NYC on Foot was a success. Mostly. This time, we decided to mix a little mass transit in to maximize our time spent experiencing the cultural offerings. You would think that would have eliminated some of the mileage; but, at day’s end, my handy app determined that we had still somehow managed to cover 25,695 steps, or 10.71 miles. Just a walk in the park. Literally. The thing about mass transit is that it doesn’t travel through Central Park. Shocking, I know. So, between our two trips clear across the entire width, plus plenty of aimless meandering down paths that, apparently, don’t travel in any particular direction, well, the miles definitely added up.

Luckily, this time, I was smart enough to wear comfortable, albeit flat, shoes. No unscheduled Duane Reade stops for us this time around! But still, after about eight hours of standing, walking, climbing… the searing pain in the ball of your foot is pretty much the same, flip flops or no. By the time we had explored Strawberry Fields, The Dakota, Belvedere Castle, the Shakespeare Garden and the Great Lawn, it was time for a snack. This was followed by a solid three hours perusing the European paintings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, circling through gallery after gallery, until those incredibly uncomfortable-looking benches began to look pretty cushy. Back through the Park we headed, this time passing the Bethesda Terrace and

Fountain, the Bow Bridge, and winding up at the famed Central Park Boathouse Restaurant. Knowing we were cutting it a little close, with no reservation, we hovered hopefully right as the dinner service began. Thankfully, we landed a prime spot overlooking the lake. As we finished up, we had precisely 45 minutes to make our way out of the Park, across to the other side and down about a dozen blocks to Lincoln Center, where we had tickets to the American Ballet Theatre’s production of Cinderella. Doable. Sort of. As we ran across the plaza to the Metropolitan Opera House, change of shoes in hand, the clock struck 7:30 p.m. Inside, a long line stretched through the lobby with dozens of patrons waiting at the Will Call window to pick up their tickets. Just. Made. It.

Star Island’s 29th annual Shark Tournament was held on June 19th-20th at Star Island Yacht Club. One hundred eighteen boats took part in the two-day event. Fifty fish were caught during the tournament, including 23 Makos, 13 Blue Sharks, and 14 Threshers. The biggest winner was Anthony Vaccaro, whose prize catch - a 470-pound Mako - aboard his boat White Water Marine, earned him honors for Heaviest Overall Shark, First Heaviest Mako, and Day Two, Heaviest Shark. The Second Heaviest Mako, at 349 pounds, was brought in by Bob Kirschbert aboard Rick Davies’ Over Spray. John Brunelle on his Lady Irene caught a 334-pound Mako, earning him Third Heaviest Mako honors. The First Heaviest Blue Shark, at 221 pounds, was

Tim Caputo, an ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School alumnus, was named the 2015 TD Ameritrade Home Run Derby Fan’s Choice Award. At the age of five, Caputo joined his first baseball little league team where his passion and athletic abilities blossomed. He started his baseball career on the Elwood Middle School team in seventh-grade and advanced to the junior varsity team by eighthgrade. In ninth-grade, Caputo was promoted to the high school’s varsity team where he excelled at shortstop. After graduating from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in 2011, Caputo continued to pursue his athletic talent, playing shortstop on the Rams baseball team at the University of Rhode Island. This past May, Caputo

the Fan’s Choice Award aims to honor college baseball players who are positive role models both on and off the field, excel in the classroom and the community, and display leadership qualities that inspire others. TD Ameritrade Fan’s Choice Award winner is determined by fan voting on a microsite. Following the nomination period, a selection committee determines the finalists who best exemplify the award’s principles. Finalists compete in the fan voting competition where fans are eligible to cast their votes on their Twitter and/or Facebook accounts. As the winner, Caputo received his award during the College Homerun Derby on July 2, which aired on ESPN2. “It was an honor just to be nominated alongside the 17 other finalists. I want to congratulate those guys on what they accomplished over the course of their careers,” said Caputo. “Each and every one of them is deserving of this award. It’s very humbling to be selected as the winner in a group with so much character and talent. It’s an honor and a privilege to win this award on behalf of the NCAA, as well as my university.”

The Chapin family holds a special place in the history of the Huntington Arts Council. Sandy Chapin is a former Vice President of the Council, and was an integral force of the Lively Arts Festival, in which Harry performed. Sandy Chapin created the organization’s wildly successful Journey Program, which is now implemented in seven school districts. In addition to the Town proclamation, the Arts Council presented Sandy Chapin with its “Harry and Sandy Chapin Arts and Humanitarian Award.” Both the Town and Arts Council honors recognized the Chapins’ contributions to the arts

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory attended the retirement celebration of Melville Chamber of Commerce President Michael DeLuise on June 22nd at The Refuge restaurant in Melville. Michael DeLuise, a co-founder of the Melville Chamber of Commerce, has served as the Chamber President since its incarnation. The Melville-East Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce was incorporated in 2002 with a mission to

promote economic and business development in a coordinated effort of business, available resources within the community and the Chamber. Over his 14 years of service, Mr. DeLuise’s leadership helped the Melville Chamber thrive, working together with business leaders, community leaders and elected officials to improve the quality of life for both the business community and residents of the area. Petrone and members of the Town Council recently recognized the Huntington Arts Council for its half century of running the Town’s Summer Arts Festival and the family of folk singer Harry Chapin, who performed at a special 50th anniversary concert in Heckscher Park. Supervisor Petrone and the council members presented proclamations to the Arts Council and to Sandy Chapin, Harry Chapin’s widow, at a VIP reception on Saturday, June 27th, at the Heckscher Museum. As originally planned, the reception was to directly precede the concert, but because of bad weather, the concert was postponed until Monday, June 29th. In addition to

Students, business mentors, family and friends joined Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer to kick-off the start of this year’s “Lead by Example” summer internship program with a party at the Tri-CYA in Huntington! The program, which has matched dozens of students with internships at local businesses over the last four years, helps young people cultivate work and communication skills by connecting them to opportunities that allow them to explore their interests. “To help tackle the problem we face in Suffolk County of losing our young professionals, we created this program to provide opportunity and a pathway for our young people to stay and thrive on Long Island. Internships are an integral part of that process as they help students make the connection between what they learn in school, the real world and their communities,” stated Legislator Spencer. “They also give students the chance to showcase their talents to prospective employers. Numerous students involved have

been able to use the practical and networking skills acquired through this program to obtain paid positions in their field of interest.” “Legislator Spencer’s Lead by Example program is a refreshing way to give back to our community and instill a valuable experience for our youth. The program has allowed our firm to educate and mentor bright students from the local area about the practice and procedure of law. This has been an invaluable experience for all involved!” stated Shelly Leonard of Blau-Leonard Law Group, a local firm which has participated in the program for the last two summers. In addition to their internship, students participated in personal growth workshops that included information on interview skills, professionalism, phone etiquette, and responsible social media usage. professional exposure gained through this program distinguishes these students from the rest. “Over the past two summers, Lead by Example has presented me with a great opportunity to explore different career paths that I never would have been exposed to without this program” said Michael Gilmor, a rising junior at Providence College. “I believe that internships are a critical part of development, and my internships have shaped not only the courses I choose, but the career path that I am working towards. Distant Memories Swim Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is pleased to announce that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher, will lead a team of swimmers in the 12th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Tuesday, July 28th, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. In its lifetime, The Swim has raised in excess of $100,000 for those with Alzheimer’s disease and their unpaid caregivers. Opening ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 9:15 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will start out at Asharoken Beach and swim across Northport Bay to Knollwood Beach in Huntington - a distance of approximately 2.0 nautical miles (less than 3 miles). The swim will also help raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. through sponsorships

and corporate donors. The goal is to raise $20,000 to help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. “Bryan is a champion for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. He is a role model for the youth of our country,” states Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “He has continuously expressed the sentiment that he wants to raise awareness about this deadly disease and help families who live on Long Island.” Over 5 million people in this country are currently living with Alzheimer’s Disease, with more than 200,000 individuals under the age of 65. The social, economical, and emotional impact of this disease can be devastating to

individuals and families. “It is my hope that substantial funds will be raised to assist Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center in providing for people with dementia and other related disorders,” Mr. Proctor said. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.
