Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced the County is the recipient of $300,000 in federal grants from the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) for the use of the plane-to-train connectivity study between the Ronkonkoma Long Island Rail Road Station and Long Island MacArthur Airport. The Suffolk County Legislature approved the appropriation of the funds at the general meeting held on June 21st. “This is another step toward spurring economic development in the Ronkonkoma Hub which will create thousands of new jobs in Suffolk County and provide a more convenient public transportation option to our residents,” said Suffolk County Steve Bellone. “For years, our region has been complacent with the

The total cost of the connectivity study is estimated at $375,000. The Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and

Planning will provide matching funds of $75,000 for the study, which was already included in the County’s 2016 Operating Budget. The study complements Suffolk County’s Innovation Zone initiative that was introduced by County Executive Bellone in 2015. The I-Zone plans to connect existing and planned transit-oriented downtowns – such as the

Ronkonkoma Hub – to the region’s world-class research institutions and amenities in order to create a quality of life ecosystem to attract the next generation of business leaders. The study will also complement previous and ongoing grant-funded studies conducted by the Department of Economic Development and Planning to spur economic

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $25,000 gift from the Treiber Family Foundation to support the Council’s Help, Hope and Healing campaign. This campaign commemorates LICADD’s 60 years of providing needed programs and services to the Long Island community. Funding for this campaign will help to support Chemical Dependency Interventions for families who are unable to afford the service; the Student Assistance Program that provides prevention and education information to grades K-12 and technology upgrades and enhancements to support the increasing demand for services. In 1956 R. Brinkley Smithers had a vision to support individuals who

were struggling with alcoholism. R. Brinkley Smithers, marshaled his personal and family fortune into the nation’s largest foundation in support of alcoholism research and treatment. In the following four decades, the foundation contributed $13.5 million, and Mr. Smithers himself donated an additional $27.9 million, to programs to fight alcoholism. Today, LICADD provides substance abuse screenings, brief interventions and referrals to addiction treatment, as well as professionallyfacilitated family interventions, relapse prevention programs and anger management services to adults and adolescents. LICADD pioneered the launch of “Too Good for Drugs,” an evidence-based K-12 substance abuse prevention

program in several Long Island schools, and initiated a new mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents. LICADD’s Employee Assistance Program now covers 80,000 public and private employees in the tristate area. “We are so grateful to the Treiber Family Foundation for their generosity and continuing support of our work. This gift provides much needed services to meet the ever growing demand for quality programs,” says Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. Across Long Island, families know first-hand, the pain of seeing a loved one suffer, and too many have lost their loved ones to addiction. For these families, LICADD offers hope and healing through programs, workshops and

ongoing advocacy efforts. For 60 years LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. LICADD offers crisis intervention, screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and several family education workshops to help Long Islanders struggling with the effects of addiction. Volunteers Needed The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is seeking to diversify its volunteer base by especially inviting young women and women of color who have had breast cancer to become part of its volunteer corps. “Our goal is to be there for all women with breast cancer concerns,” says Alida Rubenstein, the program’s volunteer/ hotline coordinator. “That means that our volunteer

base needs to be as diverse as the people who are calling us.” Rubenstein says that young and younger women are calling the hotline and it is helpful for them to be able to speak with young women who have been through what they are experiencing. The 3-session free training will be held on three consecutive Wednesdays in September: September 14th, 21st and 28th, from 5 to 8 p.m. “We’ve streamlined our

training,” says Rubenstein, “to make it easier for busy young women to participate.” Once the women complete their training, they are able to select hours that fit into their schedules. Their jobs will be to answer the hotline and provide information and emotional support to callers. They can also do outreach at community events. Five Northwell Health hospitals have been recognized for their commitment to healthcare information technology with HealthCare’s Most Wired awards for 2016 from Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. Long Island Jewish Medical Center, along with Southside, North Shore University, Huntington and Lenox Hill hospitals were named with 24 other hospitals and health systems in New York state and 414 nationwide for using information technology to engage patients and offer them services remotely via telehealth, according to the results of the 18th annual Hospitals & Health Networks survey released July 6th. New Undersheriff

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco announced that he has chosen Steve Kuehhas as Suffolk County’s new Undersheriff. Kuehhas, who is presently the East End Bureau Chief for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, will assume the position as the second-in-command at the Sheriff’s Office in July. He will provide direct oversight of the Sheriff’s Office’s managerial and senior supervisory law enforcement personnel, under the overall supervision of the Sheriff, and oversee the Office’s Internal Affairs Bureau,

Internal Security Unit, Gang Intelligence Unit and the Criminal Investigations Bureau. “Steve is an Attorney with nearly 30 years of experience in law enforcement, complex investigations and supervision. He is wellrespected throughout the County and works well with other law enforcement agencies. He has also worked closely on investigations with the Sheriff’s Office for many years. These are the qualities that I sought when I began the vetting process for a new Undersheriff, and I am certain that he will do an exceptional job for the Sheriff’s Office and the County’s residents,” stated DeMarco. As the East End Bureau Chief since 2005, Kuehhas has been responsible for overseeing all criminal prosecutions for Suffolk’s five East End towns. He is also a well-known

lecturer on policing and legal issues, and has conducted Continuing Legal Education for District Attorney staff. In addition to his work with the DA’s Office, he is an Adjunct Professor in Criminal Justice at Suffolk Community College, and was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching in 2015. “Vincent DeMarco has made instilling a culture of integrity, professionalism and agency-wide accountability the hallmark of his tenure as Sheriff. These are values that I share, and I look forward to this new chapter in my career,” said Kuehhas. Summer Arts Festival The Annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival week 4 starts Tuesday, July 12th and runs through Sunday, July 17th. Swearing In

At its annual reorganization meeting held on July 1st, 2016, the Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education officially welcomed new Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert and new trustee Deborah Weiss to their positions, as each was sworn in to their respective positions by District Clerk Nancy Mancini. Royal Rangers

At a ceremony at Smithtown Gospel Tabernacle, Legislator Leslie Kennedy congratulated several young members of the Royal Rangers Outpost #149 on attaining the Gold Medal of Achievement, the highest honor available in the organization. Skylar Fallon, Connor Fallon, Russell Fallon, Elias Velez-Maldonado, and Andrew Frey, Jr. were presented with the award, an honor that is only achieved by 1% of Royal Rangers worldwide. A Christian youth organization similar to the

Boy Scouts of America, the Royal Rangers promote the mental and spiritual growth of young Christian men. The Gold Medal of Achievement in particular requires a Royal Ranger to demonstrate his mental, social and spiritual development through a capstone project. “Today, many of us parents do everything to accelerate the educational and physical growth of our children for the sake of their futures,” Legislator Kennedy remarked after the ceremony, “but it is also true that we often neglect their social

and spiritual growth. It is the newest item in the Huntington Historical Society’s collection and will be included in a new exhibit opening at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building later this summer. The exhibit, entitled Before Suburbia, Huntington’s “Guilded” Age, will focus on civic minded Huntingtonians and the organizations they were involved in, between 1890 and the 1940. Following the presentation of the flag, Mr. Kissam presented two photographs from the Huntington Historical Society collection of Troop 1 on one of their hikes to Oyster Bay to visit President Roosevelt. Mr. Kissam corroborated the

legend of Troop 12 as the original Troop 1. Troop 12 meets on Wednesday evenings at the United Methodist Church on West Neck Road in Huntington. Troop 12 is a boy-run Troop, under the watchful eye of trained adults. The boys elect new leaders on a periodic basis and learn leadership by doing. The boys in the Troop choose their program for the year which includes camping, hiking, canoeing, biking and skiing at a variety of places on and off Long Island. They learn to pack and dress for all types of weather conditions. Other annual activities include running a hot dog stand at the church fair and cooking and serving at their annual pancake breakfast.

These little nuances are what can be designated as one’s “true colors,” those qualities we may take pains to hide from others on a daily basis, but that, when faced with circumstances beyond our control, shine through. This isn’t to say that they are automatically negative, or even need to be hidden. They are simply part of the layers which make up our individual personalities, which cause us to react in certain ways to situations in our own unique style. To each his or her own,

mostly. Of course, some consideration for how things come across to others should always be given. Think before you speak, pause before you act; it is always more advisable to attempt to diffuse a situation rather than add fuel to the fire. Especially with the current state of affairs in this nation, more care needs to be taken to respect one another, to pause a moment and appreciate the fact that, no matter the differences in our political, religious or societal views, we are all cut from the same cloth – and a little thing called humanity goes a long way. Whether engaging face to face, via text message or some other written method designed to foster

miscommunication, or – best of all – on the pages of various social media sites which seem to double as a breeding ground for contentious exchanges between so-called “friends,” common courtesy should not be dispensed with. So, take heed the next time someone is looking to engage. Draw in a deep breath, form a coherent thought, give it a second… and decide whether expressing your opinion is worth the potential repercussions. Sometimes, those true colors are not so black and white as we may think. Remember, when you mix all the colors of the rainbow together, you are left with a gray, muddled mess.

Suffolk Warns of Scams Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco would like to warn the public that scammers posing as IRS agents have been calling residents in Suffolk County demanding payments and threatening arrest by County Sheriffs if they do not pay. Several residents called the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office this morning to report the fraudulent activity. The IRS posted a public alert about these types of scams on its website and offered the following information and advice to anyone receiving unsolicited calls from people claiming to be IRS officials: Protect Yourself Scammers make unsolicited calls claiming

to be IRS officials. They demand that the victim pay a bogus tax bill. They con the victim into sending cash, usually through a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. They may also leave “urgent” callback requests through phone “robo-calls,” or via a phishing email. Many phone scams use threats to intimidate and bully a victim into paying. They may even threaten to arrest, deport or revoke the license of their victim if they don’t get the money. Scammers often alter caller ID numbers to make it look like the IRS or another agency is calling. The callers use IRS titles and fake badge numbers to appear legitimate. They may use the victim’s name,

address and other personal information to make the call sound official. Here are five things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do. Any one of these five things is a telltale sign of a scam. The IRS will never: • Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill. • Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. • Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit

card. • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. • Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying. If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money, here’s what you should do: If you don’t owe taxes, or have no reason to think that you do: • Do not give out any information. Hang up immediately. • Contact TIGTA to report the call. Use their “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” web page.
