Elwood-John H. Glenn High School boys soccer coach Lou Hanner was recently named a New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Coach of the Year for the 2016-2017 school year. Hanner, who has coached at the high school for more than 15 years, was nominated by the NYSPHSAA and is now in the running for the Region I title of the National Federation High School Coach of the Year Award. Soccer Coach of the Year
The Matinecock District of the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, held its annual fellowship dinner and presentation of the Spark Plug and District Award of Merit recognitions on Thursday, May 27th at the Elks Lodge in Huntington. The Matinecock Scouting District serves 2,027 youth members in the Town of Huntington and in Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge in the western section of the Smithtown Township. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of the
District Award of Merit. In addition, other adult recognition awards were presented. The recipients had been nominated by members of their Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Venture Crews and part of this was kept as a surprise until the presentations Three scouting volunteers in the Matinecock District that received the District Award of Merit for outstanding service to Boy Scouting, their local community, and to their religious affiliation were recognized
during special ceremonies as the highlight of the evening. Escorted by previous recipients of this prestigious award and presented with a plaque and a blue and silver recognition “knot”/ patch to be worn on their scouting uniforms. From the Matinecock District, those recognized this year are all Cub Scout Roundtable Staff members in addition to their other volunteer scouting obligations. Recognized were Debbie Trifon, Eve Kossman and Keith Josephson.

crept to a complete standstill, my dear Siri piped up and suggested an “alternate” route, one that would allegedly save 25 minutes from the journey. Not having had the best of luck in the past with these detours, I was initially hesitant. But, looking ahead at the long line of vehicles, I figured, what was the harm. Approximately 45 minutes later, and two side trips through the residential roads of Bridgehampton, and then East Hampton, we emerged back on Montauk Highway, back in the same line of traffic. So much for that. After (finally) arriving at the famous Lobster Roll luncheonette, we were met with the expected hour-long

wait, somewhat alleviated by spending time taking pictures in front of the original sign and marveling at some of the patrons attempting to navigate the pebble-filled parking lot in high heels. The food was, as always, worth the wait - and we promptly decided that dinner would most likely not be necessary, as we couldn’t imagine eating another thing for at least another three days or so. We finished up and headed on the next leg of our journey, the famous lighthouse, the self-proclaimed “End of the World.” Coming next week: The End. {Part II}

The End. {Part I} This past 4th of July weekend, my friend and I decided to take a road trip out to Montauk Point. Having recently realized that we had never been to this summer hotspot during the actual summer months, a busy holiday weekend seemed like the ideal time to go. Armed with a handful of late 90’s teen pop CDs and my trusty iPhone navigation system, we headed out. Of course, Long Island traffic is a force to be reckoned with on any normal day; add to it a two-lane road with speed limits ranging from 55 to 25 mph, throw in a few unfamiliar tourist types - and you have yourself a solid two-hour journey to contend with, at least. “By doing this, you help talk to other young people and tell them that you need to be safe around pools,” said Legislator Spencer. Orza, who has a pool at his own home, created the poster with the words, “Be Pool Smart” and “Always Swim with a Buddy,” in large letters. He also drew arrows, signs and illustrations to stress how to stay safe.

Outstanding Young Scientist Recent East Northport Middle School graduate Maxwell DeBrino proudly represented his district and received honorable mention at the New York State Science Congress on June 3rd. The young scientist also recently earned his second Broadcom MASTERS invitation based on earning first place in the junior division of the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. DeBrino’s project titled, “Feeding Frenzy: The Effect of Position, Shape and Ultraviolet Color on the Feeding Behavior of Backyard Birds,” focused on the impact of color, shape and position on a bird feeder in relation to the feeding behavior of birds commonly found in the Northeast. He conducted his research from August to October 2016 and competed in the Long Island Science Congress where he received high
honors for his project and second place in the biology category. As a result, DeBrino was presented with a nomination to participate in the NYS Science Congress. In addition, he attended the regional LISEF Broadcom MASTERS competition in March of 2016 where he placed among the top 10 percent of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students who were nominated across the country to participate. Based on his high score, both he and his sister Isabella DeBrino were selected as National Broadcom MASTERS semifinalists in September of 2016. DeBrino received his second invitation to the National Broadcom MASTERS after earning first place in the junior division of the 2017 Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. He submitted his application
to participate in the national competition once again and will find out in September if he is chosen as a semifinalist. Upon hearing the news that he was invited back, DeBrino was excited. “It’s a great experience,” he said. “It will help me progress in my science experiments so I can learn new things to try.” In the future, DeBrino hopes to become an ornithologist, where he can further his studies on birds. He plans to one day create a program where he can incorporate the ultraviolet coloring of a natural habitat into a rehabilitation program to help birds’ brains so that when they are released back into the wild, they have a better chance of survival. As for high school next year, DeBrino is looking forward to the change in classes and exploring more of his interest in biology.
Annual Maker Faire Creativity was celebrated during the Elwood Union Free School District’s second annual Maker Faire at Elwood Middle School on June 16th. Open to kindergarten through eighth-grade students and their families, the evening consisted of 45-minute sessions where students could build, tinker and explore through hands on activities. Prior to the event, students registered for what sessions fit their interests. The sessions took place in classrooms and ranged from creating marble roller coasters and water slides, to experimenting with bubbles. Coordinated by Director of Math, Science and Technology Eileen Kelly-Gorman and teacher Krista Albrecht,
the event kicked off with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert and Ms. Kelly-Gorman welcoming those in attendance and providing an overview of what to expect. “We are so excited to have so many of you here to join us today,” said Ms. Kelly-Gorman. “We can’t wait to see your great ideas come to fruition in each of these sessions.” Organizations such as the Elwood Harley Avenue School, James H. Boyd Intermediate School and Elwood Middle School PTA’s, as well as the Elwood Booster Club and the Elwood Education Endowment supported the event by donating money to expand on the learning opportunities for students.
SEPTA provided food and refreshments throughout the evening while staff members and ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School student volunteers helped facilitate the sessions. The school’s cafeteria featured stations with more activities for students and their families to enjoy. A popular station for many was the Google Expeditions area. Here, students had the opportunity to test out the newest educational technology tool in the district that will be used in 2017-2018 school year. The viewers allow students to immerse themselves in virtual tours of places around the world and were bought for the district with the help of the James H. Boyd PTA and the Elwood Education Endowment.

Elwood Middle School eighth-grader Rithika Narayan was recently recognized for her high score in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) Talent Search and was awarded at a special rewards ceremony. Rithika was among approximately 27,000 students from more
than 65 countries who participated in the CTY Talent Search between March 2016 and February 2017. The CTY Talent Search allows advanced students in second through eighth grade to take challenging tests to reveal their abilities and true capacity for learning. Students in seventh and
eighth grade take the SAT or ACT, the same tests used for college admissions. Rithika was commended for scoring exceptionally high on the rigorous, above-grade-level test. Only about 25 percent of Talent Search participants earned the High Honors designation.

Young Poets Get Published weekly visits. Through his advice and humor, Wagner served as a visiting advisor and helped teach the students about the parts of a book and what it takes to get their poetry published. The artwork for the book cover was even selected to reflect the students and showcased third-grader and club member Paolo Greco’s creation. “Part of the idea of the Apprentice Poets program was to really introduce the kids to the idea that yes, people are doing this now and you can be one of those people if you buckle down and work with the prompts and exercises,” said Wagner. More than 70 community members
Eighth-graders in the Northport-East Northport School District celebrated their transition to the high school with family, friends, faculty members and administrators on June 20th and 21st at Northport High School. East Northport Middle School held their ceremony on the evening of June 20th, while Northport Middle School had their celebration on June 21st. During both ceremonies, the graduates entered the packed auditorium to “Pomp and Circumstance,” as proud family members looked on. After being seated, one student led the room in the Pledge of Allegiance. East Northport Middle School eighth-
grader Alison Crosley performed the National Anthem, while Northport Middle School had their choraliers perform the “Star Spangled Banner” and “Over the Rainbow.” The performances followed by East Northport Middle School principal Pasquale DeStefano and Northport Middle School assistant principal Dr. Chelsea Brown commending the eighthgraders on their years as middle schoolers. Several graduates of East Northport Middle School received special awards during the ceremony for their community service, outstanding grades and determination. Northport Middle School
students Sean Ryan, Alyssa Infranco and Isabella Anton reflected on their middle school experiences and shared their favorite memories as they move onto the high school. Each student walked across the stage and received a certificate of completion as their names were proudly announced. East Northport Middle School’s President of the National Junior Honor Society Megan DellaMarco and Northport Middle School Principal Timothy Hoss concluded the ceremonies, wishing the graduates all the best as they move onto their next academic journey – high school.

Norwood Avenue Elementary School’s poetry club recently received the support of community members at their first ever published book launch. The book titled, “Apprentice Poets: Norwood Avenue School, Northport Edition,” is comprised of 35 poems from 15 members of the club and was published by Local Gems Press. Under the guidance of school librarian Linda Trott Dickman and publisher James P. Wagner, the third, fourth and fifth grade students worked during the course of three 8-week sessions and wrote a number of poems which were shared with Dickman and Wagner during his

Knights Earn Their Diplomas Elwood-John H. Glenn High School seniors walked the field of their high school for one last time among family, friends, faculty, board members and administrators on June 23rd. Rain did not hinder the special day as the sun broke through for the graduates. Led by Superintendent of School Dr. Kenneth Bossert, the Board of Education and administrators, the Class of 2017 made their way onto the football field where their loved ones cheered in excitement. All School President Matthew Weiss started the ceremony off with the Pledge of Allegiance. Principal Carisa Burzynski thanked the families, Dr. Bossert, the Board of Education, community members and fellow administrators for joining in the celebration. Mrs. Burzynski also offered her own advice and praised the graduating seniors on all their accomplishments, listing the various accolades that members of the Class of 2017 have received in the past year. “You have conducted yourselves in the best possible light,” she said. “I thank you for sharing your lives with me. I have had the pleasure of getting to
know so many of you and have learned that you are really good people, who will do very great things in life.” In addition, Mrs. Burzynski acknowledged a member of the Elwood community who passed away from cancer at the young age of seven and would have been part of the graduating class. Her family was present to receive her diploma in honor of her memory. Each graduate received their diploma from Dr. Bossert and was congratulated by Mrs. Burzynski. After the presentation of the diplomas, Matthew Weiss approached the podium again to give his speech to his fellow classmates. He reminded his peers that they are all authors to their own stories. Matthew’s mother, board member Deborah Weiss, embraced him before he sat back down with his graduating class. Other speeches included senior class president Casey Oualaalou, salutatorian Samantha Ciappa and valedictorian Michael Hermanns. Each thanked their families, administrators and teachers for the opportunities that they were provided in the district, while also wishing
their fellow classmates well on their future endeavors. Dr. Bossert shared the positive experiences that he had with the graduating seniors, including lessons that he learned from them during the year as the new superintendent in the district. He summarized his advice best by quoting fictional character Ferris Bueller and left the students with his gratitude. “Thank you for bringing great pride to our community and as your journey beyond Glenn continues, don’t forget to stop and look around every once in a while because you can miss it,” he said. On behalf of retiring Board President Michael LaMena, Board Vice President and proud parent Julia Fried encouraged the graduates to be a hero in life, while Mrs. Weiss offered her own advice as a Elwood-John H. Glenn High School alumna. She stressed to the seniors to never lose sight of their dreams. Led by members of the student council, the graduates concluded the ceremony by moving their tassels from right to left to signify their commencement. Blue and white caps filled the air as the students were introduced for the final time as the Class of 2017.

Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation donated $1,000 to the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Troop 239, out of Huntington Station, to assist them with their Bronze Award Community Service Project. To educate the public about recycling, the scouts collected plastic caps and lids from local elementary schools. These items were then recycled to create beautiful benches that will be placed throughout the South Huntington School
District. The funds donated by The Helping Hands Foundation assisted the troop in covering the production and shipping costs of the bench. In total, Troop 239 has prevented over 1,200 pounds of plastic caps and lids from being littered or ending up in a landfill. Last week, Troop 239 held a bench unveiling ceremony at Birchwood Intermediate School, since they dedicated the bench to a third-grade student

The “Buddy Bench” will be located on the playground, and children who feel lonely or sad can sit on the bench and a “buddy” will approach them and try to cheer them up. Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation will be collecting toys during the entire month of July for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. Our goal is to exceed the 1,000 toys we collected for these charities last July. Toys can be dropped off at Adventureland’s Main Ticket Booth or Back Ticket Booth every day in July from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Donors will receive a free giveaway for each toy they donate. The Helping Hands Foundation and Adventureland, in collaboration with Cox Media’s 102.3 WBAB and 106.1 BLI, will be hosting Christmas in July themed activities and events every Saturday from July 8th to July 29th, including live musical performances and even visits from
