Standing Up for Others

Lina Tornese, an eighthgrader at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District, was recently named a recipient of the Annual Friedlander Upstander Award. She was one of three Suffolk County

awards students who have shown themselves to “Upstanders” against any type of intolerance. Each student selected is given a $2,500 educational scholarship. Educators nominate their students and are required to attest to the student’s character and how they stand up for others. This highly competitive educational program gives students interested in pursuing STEM studies (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) hands-on experience in a real-world setting. Selected students work together with BNL staff to collaborate on intensive projects. In addition, Nathaniel was awarded a research placement in the laboratory of Dr. Bo Li at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. He will

work under the mentorship of Dr. Xian Zhang as part of the Partners for the Future Program, which provides talented Long Island high school students with an opportunity to gain handson experience in biomedical research at CSHL. Nathaniel will spend a minimum of 10 hours per week, from September through March of his upcoming senior year, performing original neuroscience research.

Led by Board of Education trustees, administration and faculty, the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Class of 2018 stepped onto the field for the last time at the district’s 56th annual commencement held on June 22nd. Students proudly processed to their seats as family and friends cheered, and the high school band performed “Pomp and Circumstance”. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, led by class president Brendan Bouzas, and the high school band playing the national anthem under the baton of Vicki Henson, Principal Carisa Burzynski welcomed and thanked the families, the board of education, fellow administrators and the community for their support. She also praised the graduating class on their various accomplishments, calling them “true leaders” and a class that was “inclusive from the start.” During her address to the Class of 2018, Mrs. Burzynski took a moment to advise the students on being true to themselves. “Listen to the voice inside you,” she urged GRADUATING SENIOR - Graduating senior Qai Hardy received his diploma from them, “because that is Principal Carisa Burzynski. truly who you are.” Class of 2018 graduation speaker Ruben Saint Paul took the podium to reflect on the class’ four years at John H. Glenn, and remarked that he did not expect the day to be so bittersweet. “We are all sharing a collective tear of reminiscence,” he noted. “Glenn has been a catalyst for our intrinsic change.” Salutatorian Catherine Reyes-Ordonez encouraged her classmates to make positive contributions to the world, and to be unfraid of prompting change. “Stop just saying,” she implored them, “and start doing.” Valedictorian Kathryn Browne stepped up to the podium with a smile. She urged her peers to face change, and challenges, with faith. “We must learn from the unfamiliar things we encounter,” she said. “Try to relax, and trust the timing of your life.” Seniors then joined the band and the chorus for the last time to play musical interludes, which included Samuel Hazo’s “Solas Ane (Yesterday’s Joy)” and Tedder and Zancanella’s “I Lived.” After Mrs. Burzynski, the board of education and

administration confirmed that the seniors had met the requirements for graduation, they presented diplomas to each graduate. Led by members of the student council, the seniors concluded the ceremony by moving their tassels from right to left to signify their commencement. Blue and white caps filled the air as the graduates were introduced as alumni of the Elwood Union Free School District.

Board of Ed News The Elwood Union Free School District held its annual Board of Education reorganization meeting on July 2nd in preparation for the 2018-2019 school year. Board trustees Heather Mammolito and James Tomeo, both re-elected by the community in May, were sworn in for their new terms by district Clerk Mary Lou Janelli. Julia Fried was elected to once again serve as president of the board of education by a unanimous vote and James Tomeo was also unanimously elected to continue his tenure as vice president.

Of Mice and Men Like many of you, I am one of those who love to read. In that respect, one of my favorite authors has always been John Steinbeck. Just a few of his many books include The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men and Cannery Row. In many of his novels, he wrote about common people in the Great Depression in the 1930’s, covering everything from social justice to the basics of human psychology involved in people’s lives. It has always been shown that those ignorant of history are bound to repeat its mistakes. Accordingly, I thought it would be a good idea in writing this column to carry Steinbeck’s thought into our modern world today. To start, let’s begin with a rephrase of the inscription on the base of the Statue of Liberty. It goes as follows: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” Can you imagine what my grandparents (who were from France) thought when their ship entered New York Harbor? It was one of the most thrilling and

memorable points in their lives. I say this in all due respect to our government, the political parties and (as this is being written) the condition of the state of the world today. Turmoil abounds. Protectionism rises up everywhere. Tariffs established by one country are countermanded by another. Illegal immigrants enter this country to escape certain death from bands of roving gangs and bring their entire families with them. The stock market wildly swings daily, causing uncertainty in the world markets. And on the home front, we continue to battle the drug problem. Shall I go on? Upon reflection, we can only imagine how the average person feels today, and begin to see (although many years have passed) how the characters in Steinbeck’s novels must have felt through many of their difficult times. My point here is that, in today’s charged world, we must keep in mind that “this too shall pass” and each one of us continue to do the best we can in today’s living environment. I realize that we are all different in handling confrontation, but for what it’s worth, here is one of the ways that I do it. In my line of work, I frequently visit Washington, D.C. Normally, after work,

I dash straight home via the shuttle and the waiting car service. However, once in a while, I change my routine. Usually it’s a two-day trip, so on the first night after dinner, I visit the Lincoln Memorial. For those of you who have never done this, you are in for a treat. It’s startling to see the giant figure of Lincoln in an armchair; wherever you move, his eyes seem to follow you. On the next afternoon, instead of rushing home, I have the taxi take me to Arlington National Cemetery, where one can walk around the endless rows of heroes who have lost their lives in defense of our country. It’s a sight that you will never forget. Finally, before heading for the airport, I have the taxi stop at the Vietnam Wall. Although I have been a writer for many years, I simply cannot express my feelings when one walks through. It’s very personal to me, since I lost a few friends in “Nam” and note their names on the wall. This is how I change my pace to keep up with world events and retain some shred of sanity. So, everyone … “keep the faith” and keep moving forward. Peace.

Elwood Middle School held a special ceremony for eighth-graders moving on to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School on June 20th. Principal Christina Sapienza, who is wrapping up her first year of service as the EMS principal, initiated this new tradition that will continue on for years to come. Students entered the middle school auditorium to upbeat music as family members, teachers, administrators and board members looked on, ready to celebrate the students in this special time. After the Pledge of Allegiance, the select chorus, led by Laura Fisher, performed a beautiful rendition of God Bless America. Dr. Sapienza welcomed all those in attendance and thanked the district for a wonderful first year as principal.

However, we must remember to take care of our shoreline and preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us. Throughout the month, I will present various ways that you can help those at Coastal Steward Long Island to preserve, educate and take action! Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! They have also been restoring shellfish since 2000. More than 500,000 adult shellfish have been released into Port

Jefferson and Mt. Sinai Harbors to date. They wish to establish a self-sustaining population of oysters in our harbors. As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island is always taking volunteers. If you would like to help keep our island home to some of the most beautiful and top-rated beaches in America, then consider volunteering with CSLI! They are looking for volunteers to help with beach cleanups, to plant oysters, to collect relevant data, to maintain tanks, to release into the harbor and to perform office work. On Saturday, July 14th, CSLI will be having a Shellfish Restoration Project at Cedar Beach in Mt. For One Day Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us. ~ Maya Angelou I have always been a fan of the above quote, feeling its sentiment to be one we would all do better to embrace from time to time. One day. How difficult can it be to truly remove oneself from our surroundings and instead become immersed in the peace and tranquility of utter respite for one continuous 24-hour period? Turns out, much more so than anticipated.

I have never been one to take vacation days too liberally, so when I decided to make it my mission to piece together a five-day “weekend” leading up to the 4th of July, it was with a feeling of entering unchartered territory. How to fill these five days from morning ’til night, to schedule hour after hour of fun. Schedule fun, you say? Perhaps that was where I went wrong. It’s funny, I generally fluctuate between moving manically from one task to another, barely coming up for air, to spending an entire day doing what can only be adequately described as vegetating. There is rarely an in-between mode. Given five days to play with, I spent the better part of two going full speed ahead, and the others, well - recovering from said adventures. Come time to return to work, and I was just about ready for another minibreak.

I often look at others’ vacation photos and admire how they seem to never come up for air, to always be fitting in one more cultural outing, a dinner with friends, a tourism stop in some city or another. Relaxation? That’s a foreign word for another day; certainly no time for that during the course of limited “free” time we each hold onto like a precious commodity. Irony noted, of course. Try it yourself. Take one day, and attempt to leave it open, free of any scheduled tasks but the ones you choose to engage in on a whim. Remove yourself completely - no phone, no e-mail, no contact. Start with an hour. See how it feels. Build from there. Who knows, you might just reach the end of the day feeling completely refreshed and reinvigorated. Or bored out of your mind. No harm in finding out either way.
