The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.
One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. You’ve made it possible for me to have some peace of mind so I can still be able to stay in my home, the only “roots” I know.”
2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community.
1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection.

In a fun and challenging synthesis of math, science, and reading comprehension, third graders in Ms. Katie Moy’s class at Ocean Avenue Elementary worked together to save the endangered Golden Tree Frogs during a hands-on “Breakout Lesson”. This interactive lesson was acquired through BreakoutEdu —
an educational organization that creates lessons that require students to use critical thinking, collaboration and creative communicating to break open locked boxes. Students worked together to solve a series of clues to open a series of locks ultimately resulting in saving the hypothetical endangered tree frogs and transporting
them to a safe location. Clues came with challenges including building a 3D cage for the frogs out of clay and toothpicks and using a series of codes that would bring frog through a maze to reach a cricket as a lock combination. Groups of students were the picture of concentration and teamwork, with looks of determination on each of
their faces. “These lessons can either introduce or reinforce math, science, and reading skills, and the kids respond so positively to them,” said school Curriculum Coordinator Amy Laverty. “They know there’s no prize for winning, just the satisfaction of using their brains and a job well done, and that alone motivates them.”

At a recent Scholarship Awards Ceremony held at Teachers Federal Credit Union headquarters in Hauppauge, Robert G. Allen, former President/ CEO of TFCU, presented six $2,500 TFCU education scholarships and four New York Credit Union Association (NYCUA) education scholarships – two $1,250, one $750 and one $500 – to local graduating high school seniors. The Northport High School Class of 2019 proudly entered the new high school field clad in blue caps and gowns on the sunny morning of June 29. Led by district administration, faculty and board members and the familiar melody of “Pomp and Circumstance” played by the high school band, students processed to their seats, smiling and waving as proud family members and loved ones looked on, excited for the day’s commencement exercises. After principal Daniel Danbusky welcomed all in attendance, thanked
the community for their support, and commended the seniors for their hard work and dedication to academic excellence, the Northport High School Choirs then performed a beautiful rendition “Fields of Gold” by Sting. Before presenting the Class of 2019, Mr. Danbusky shared some words of wisdom with the graduates. “You never know how one small act can influence those around you,” he told them. “You all have the opportunity to become the greatest generation in history — but it all starts with you.”
Following Mr. Danbusky’s address, board of education members presented the diplomas to the Class of 2019. Graduates were congratulated by Mr. Banzer and Mr. Danbusky as they exited the platform. Class President Maxwell Aftel led his fellow graduated in the tassel change to symbolize their completion of high school and tossed their caps high into the air, and with their loved ones looking on, proudly processed out as Northport High School Alumni.
Ready For The Future On the sunny evening of June 28, the Elwood-John H. Glenn Class of 2019 emerged proudly onto the field their last act as high school students — graduation. After a warm welcome, Principal Carisa Burzynski praised the graduating class for all they’ve accomplished in the past four years at John H. Glenn, taking an additional moment to commend them for helping the high school earn the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award. “I can say with confidence that we are all in the presence of true leaders,” Mrs. Burzynski said of the Class of 2019, “who are ready to leave John Glenn and make a positive impact on the world.” Salutatorian Olivia Kelly recalled important lessons learned in the Elwood School District, including
the importance of cherishing a tight sense of community. She urged her classmates to express gratitude to all those that helped them along the way, and to not forget where they came from. Valedictorian Yeji Lee encouraged her classmates to remember that the lessons they’ve learned over the past four years will echo throughout the rest of their lives, and to always remember what it meant to belong, be loved, and be supported by the Elwood community. “Our links to this special place are unbreakable and will forever be intertwined with our past present and futures,” she said. “Use what you’ve learned at John Glenn to approach every challenge or opportunity with open mindedness, integrity, and that trademark Blue Ribbon spirit.”
Class of 2019 graduation speaker Nicholas Weiss followed at the podium to reflect on the last four years at John H. Glenn. “At the beginning of our high school career, we had one goal — to make our mark on John Glenn,” he said. “Now, as we leave, we assume a new goal — to make our mark on the world.” After Mrs. Burzynski, the board of education and administration confirmed that the seniors had met the requirements for graduation, each student received their diploma. Led by the members of student council, the seniors signified their commencement by moving their tassels from right to left. Blue and white caps then filled the air as the graduates were introduced as the newest alumni of the Elwood Union Free School District.

Educators Celebrated The Elwood Union Free School District dedicated a portion of their last board of education meeting of the 2018-19 school year to honoring the teachers and administration being awarded tenure, as well as this years’ retirees and 25year employees. Administrators, faculty members and loved ones of those being honored
filled the middle school auditorium to celebrate these special members of the district’s community. Each honoree was personally recognized and thanked by one of their building’s administrators, as well as Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert and a member of the board of education. Retiring staff and faculty
members were commended for dedicating their lives to educating students, for being a shining light within their school and for never losing sight of each child individually. Those recognized included Domenick Abbate, Constance Alibrandi, John Day, Francesca Layne and Doreen O’Brien. Trophies for serving the
school district for 25 years were presented to Amy Chiarello, Jennifer Decker, Elizabeth Derr and Rosalia Sangiorgio. Lastly, 11 educators were honored for being granted tenure, including Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Maureen Hull. Additional educators recognized included
Lauren Bove, Nicole Correia, Elenda Ferriolo, Erica Girodano, Richard Greening, Jonathan Guercio, Samantha Heuer, Cheri Murcott, Kristen Romanchuk and Leslie Seilback. Board of Education Student Liaison Annie Song was also recognized for her excellent service to the board during the
2018-19 school year. Both Dr. Bossert and Board of Education President Julia Fried praised her for the thoroughness of her monthly reports and expressed confidence in the greatness she will accomplish in college and beyond.
