The Highlight Reel By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we head into the 4th of July holiday, allow me to share some excerpts of a column from the archives, written back in the fall of 2005, just a few short months after I began my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers… I met Don Mattingly. No, let me elaborate…I didn’t just meet him; I interviewed him, one-onone, for a solid fifteen minutes. Don Mattingly, one of my favorite players of all time…a living legend. And I did it while working for this very newspaper. The opportunity came about after I received an e-mail at work regarding a local autographsigning event. My initial reaction? When I went home that day, I excitedly announced to my mother, “I want to go! Wouldn’t that be cool? I can get his autograph!” My mother just looked at me, perplexed, and said, “You can cover it, can’t you? You
work for the paper, remember?” Oh. Right. The next day, I contacted the public relations firm that had put out the press release and was told that, yes, they would love for someone from our paper to cover the event, and would I maybe like to speak with Mr. Mattingly prior to the signing? Would I?! Was that even a question? By the time Mattingly arrived at the event, the line was already stretched around the building, with more people arriving every minute, and so I was forced to wait until the very end to do the interview. It was worth the wait. Once the crowd dispersed, the few people remaining headed into the back of the store where more items were lined up for Mattingly to sign for charity. A girl who worked for his agent explained to him who I was and would he mind answering a few questions while he signed? “No, not at all,” he replied in that soft Indiana accent of his, and motioned for me to stand next to him at the table.
I proceeded to go down my list of questions. To my pleasant surprise, Mattingly answered each one thoroughly, pausing to consider his answers first, and then carefully explained his responses in great detail – definitely not your typical 15-second sound bite. It was as if I had known him for years. He was a true gentleman, full of class, and extremely humble. The image absolutely matched the reality. Considering he had just been signing autographs for a solid three hours – twice as long as scheduled – he gave no impression of being bothered by any of it, no impression of being “above” such things as an interview with a local paper that he had probably never heard of. On the way home that night, my mother asked, “So, did you ever imagine you would have the chance to interview Don Mattingly while working for your hometown paper? Never in my wildest dreams.

The Fight Resumes
Eminent Domain can be defined as the right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation. What this means is that whenever the government feels like it, they can kick you out of your house and onto the streets. Some people are theorizing that Governor Cuomo will enact Eminent Domain rights on Fire Island. He would do this by forcing oceanfront residents to sell their houses and get out, just so a little sand dune could be built. There have been artificial dunes built in the past, yet they are not there today. They have all been washed away over time. What makes this proposed plan any different than the plan from ten
years ago? Hundreds of people will have to sell their homes. Hundreds of people will have to leave the island on which they grew up. Are these prospective dunes truly worth our residences? There is no guarantee that the mounds of sand will stand the test of time. Most artificial dunes are gone within the year. Only Mother Nature can choose when the sand comes and when the sand goes. This isn’t the first time that the American Government has tried to take our houses. Following Hurricane Katrina, thousands of people wanted to just seize huge swaths of land, basically condemning the city. In what world is tearing down a city more beneficial than trying to rebuild it?
I’m sure Albany has their reasons, but in the case of Fire Island, Eminent Domain is not the best solution. The vast majority of the oceanfront homes went undamaged following Hurricane Sandy. My house, like many others, is one of the structurally sound, oceanfront houses threatened by Eminent Domain. The benefits within rebuilding our houses strongly outweigh the need for a temporary dune. Fire Island, as a community, is urging our representatives to stop talking about Eminent Domain. In theory, it is a good plan; but when enacted, we will all find that it will not succeed. Do the right thing, protect our homes, not our sand.

Family, friends, members of the district’s Board of Education, administration, staff, and other special guests from the school community shared an important day in the lives of Harborfields High School’s Class of 2014 at the school’s 55th annual commencement exercises. As members of the senior class marched in to “Pomp and Circumstance,” they were greeted with cheers from the crowd, in celebration of their great accomplishments. After senior members of the high school choir delivered a beautiful rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the school’s alma mater, Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro addressed the graduates. “You have reached this milestone in your life as a result of your commitment, motivation and initiative,” she said. “We are confident that the excellent foundation you have acquired during the past 13 years will ensure your continued success as you begin this new journey.” Salutatorian Michael McDonagh then had the opportunity to address his peers, sharing his memories and lessons learned during his time in Harborfields. “We do not have to wait until we are 30 or 40 years old to start making a difference in the world,” Michael said. “While one single action will not fix the innumerable amount of issues that are facing our country and world today, everything starts small… We can impact the world now.”
Following Michael’s heartfelt speech, Class of 2014 President Ryan Cates also delivered words of wisdom to all gathered in attendance, speaking about the strong “HF family” that exists at the high school. “The HF family never ends,” he said. “It continues when you leave here to pursue your own life and career…It truly never stops.”
In his remarks, Keith Mills, class valedictorian, said, “High school is where we began to build our lives…We will continue to have to make choices that will shape our lives. I’m sure we can handle the challenges that we’ll face, especially as we face them more and more on our own.” The featured speaker of the commencement ceremony,
selected by the students, was high school English teacher James Incorvaia. He delivered a lively address to the Class of 2014, providing them with valuable advice for the future. “Your journeys have barely begun,” he said. “Yet recollect all the treasures you’ve accumulated, all the friendships you have formed, all the love that has been showered upon you, and you must surely see how rich your lives have already been.” Harborfields High School Principal Dr. Rory Manning, in the final speech of the evening, shared a poignant story with the graduating class about a young boy scared of the dark. In the story, the father gave his young son a lantern to ease his fear. At the conclusion of the story, Dr. Manning instructed the graduates to look under their seats for a gift – a small Harborfields flashlight. “This morning, you are starting your own personal journey into your future,” said Dr. Manning. “At this time, you are unable to see where that journey will take each of you…The light that will guide you along that path is the love and support of your family, the education you received here in Harborfields over the past 13 years and the many life experiences you’ve had.” Following the speeches, 276 members of the Class of 2014 crossed the graduation stage and received their diplomas, officially becoming alumni of the Harborfields Central School District.
GOLDEN GIRLS - Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta recently attended the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Council Gold Award Ceremony where several scouts from his district were presented with their Gold Award in recognition of completing their community projects. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest honor one can achieve in Girl Scouting. The Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department retrofitted the donated surplus vessel as a firerescue boat spending $40,000, in contrast to buying a new boat for over $100,000. Spencer kicked off this year’s “Lead by Example” summer internship program with a party at the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum and Education Center!
