Equity First Foundation
Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.
In March of 2020, when the pandemic really started to hit hard, Rhonda, along with the assistance of her board members, united to find solutions for the community despite what was going on. Rhonda believed that even though EFF programs may be on hold, that did not mean the people of the community did not still need answers and help. She has worked endless hours for the sake of the families that need assistance and need a voice. Since the pandemic Rhonda has either spearheaded or collaborated in many projects to help our community out. Here is an example of just a few: The Grab & Go 3,000 Event in Patchogue: Rhonda collaborated with business owner of local restaurant to provide over 3,000 hot meals to families in need. Grab & Go Breakfast in Rocky Point: EFF collaborated with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry of Strathmore bagels and a few

Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. PSEG Long Island employees recently delivered more than $500 in Uber gift cards and $1,000 in Walmart gift cards to be distributed to formerly homeless veterans through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing (HUDVASH) department of the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). The Walmart cards will provide the veterans with more independence by giving them the means to shop on their own for food and other household items. The Uber gift cards have been especially critical for veterans requiring rides to and from their lifesaving chemotherapy, dialysis and other critical medical appointments at the VAMC while COVID-19 restrictions have reduced their transportation options. The Northport VA HUDVASH program supports hundreds of local veterans
in overcoming barriers they face in transitioning to independent living. The money was collected by the PSEG Long Island Veterans employee business resource group (Veterans EBRG) and the PSEG Long Island Outreach Council through various fundraisers, including a Long Island Ducks game last summer and individual employee donations. “As a military veteran myself, I appreciate the support my co-workers give to local men and women who have served our country,” said Enrique Morales, PSEG Long Island engineer and president of the Veterans EBRG. “We knew last year that our fundraisers would support veterans, but at the time we didn’t know how. Finding out about this program and being able to fulfill a crucial need during the pandemic has been gratifying for all of us interested in giving back during these uncertain
times.” PSEG Long Island has a long history of engaging in community service activities at the VA. Prepandemic, groups of employees cleaned up the grounds around the Vietnam Memorial Gardens, decorated buildings to bring cheer for the holidays and crafted with veterans at the long-term care home. When these activities paused earlier this year due to social distancing protocols, the company switched gears to provide support in other ways. Last month during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, the Veterans EBRG donated lunch to health care workers caring for military veterans at the VA’s Community Living Center. PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves by actively supporting hundreds of local charity events each year through

Receives Federal Funding To Help Low Income Suffolk Residents who have either lost their jobs, became temporarily unemployed, or faced financial difficulties because of the pandemic. The funds originate from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act – commonly known as the CARES Act – which is providing $41 billion in funding to supplement the nationwide
Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program. Signed into law on March 27, the relief program aims to address the consequences of increased unemployment and economic disruption resulting from the COVID-19 virus. “The Coronavirus pandemic has triggered the most damaging economic crisis America has faced
in some 80 years,” said Adrian Fassett, CEO of EOC of Suffolk. “During this difficult period, these federal funds will help our organization fulfill our mission of promoting the economic self-sufficiency of Suffolk County residents.” An applicant’s eligible expenses can include food, funeral costs, rental expenses, broker fees,
utility expenses, medical expenses, retraining expenses, clothing, bedding, toiletries, and other expenses. Household income cannot exceed 200 percent of poverty guidelines. The determination of financial eligibility for CARES assistance does not factor in an applicant’s supplemental
