he rainy weather could not put a damper on the pride and beaming smiles of the Harborfields High School Class of 2015 as they celebrated the 56th commencement exercises on Saturday, June 27th. Seniors entered the high school gymnasium dressed in the traditional Harborfields gowns of green and white, and were greeted with an outpouring of cheers from the stands and triumphant sounds delivered by the high school band. Don’t Forget the Flats By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Expanding upon my adventuring-into-NYC theme from last week, clearly, I prefer to get around on foot. Sure, weather can be a factor, or time, but as long as it’s somewhat feasible, walking the city streets can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of exploring Manhattan. Assuming, that is, you have the proper footwear. Do I speak from personal experience? Why, of course I do. This past autumn, my friend and I – both former dancers – decided to buy tickets to the NYC Ballet. It would be our very first time seeing such a professional-scale performance; plus it was a great excuse to spend the day roaming the city. We (somewhat) mapped out our excursions, deciding we would walk from Penn Station all the way up to Lincoln Center, meandering off-route periodically. The day was unseasonably
warm for late September (like, approaching 90º warm), but we forged ahead with our plan to brave the elements. The main stop I wanted to make was to Central Park, in the vicinity of Strawberry Fields. For those unfamiliar, that’s a solid 35 blocks. Not a problem, at first. The issue, one that we had failed to appropriately navigate, was getting through the park without traveling, oh, about 27 miles out of the way. That was the moment when my decision to wear heels really kicked in as the wrong choice. Pavement was one thing; rolling hills and dirt paths quite another. Let’s just sum up the experience by stating that, after wandering aimlessly for hours, stopping to rest at literally every single park bench we passed, I was in dire need of a shoe substitute. With our show at Lincoln Center fast approaching, we desperately scanned the stores as we made our way south.
Finally, I spotted a Duane Reade. They sell flip-flops, don’t they? Well, yes, they do. However, unless you have size 11 feet, they won’t do you much good. Desperately, I searched the racks for something, anything else that would fulfill my purpose – which, at this point, was not being forced to walk barefoot down the city sidewalks. Just when I had given up hope, there they were – a pair of size 9 (I’m a size 7) ballet slipper flats. Sold. And so off we went to Lincoln Center, shoes in hand. Classy. I found myself reflecting upon this fond memory as I prepared for yet another city trip, to yet another ballet performance at Lincoln Center, with the same friend, over the Fourth of July weekend. Plans were mapped out accordingly, including a detour into Central Park. To be continued…

The theme will be “Our Favorite Things” with guest conductor David Gaines, Massapequa Schools and NYSSMA President. The PUBLIQuartet and Mighty Third Rail will join us on Friday, July 10th, for their adventurous collaboration, “Changing Night.” A sci-fi narrative that re-imagines the Garden of Eden story, questions the nature of change, and the survival of humanity in a world consumed by technology. The well-known musical “West Side Story” is on Saturday, July 11th. The Plaza Theatrical Productions stages the greatest love story ever told. Hunting-Tony Awards The Elwood Union Free School District is proud to congratulate Elwood-John H. Glenn High School student-actress Victoria Ciccone for receiving a 2015 Hunting-Tony Award. During the awards ceremony, Ciccone was named Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Miss Adelaide in the ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School winter musical performance Guys and Dolls. Engeman Theater in Northport, the HuntingTony Awards is an annual award ceremony to highlight the performing arts talent of students throughout the Town of Huntington. Since seventh-grade, Ciccone has starred in various Elwood musical productions including Willy Wonka and Fame. In the fall, Ciccone will pursue her theatrical passion in the performing arts program at Sarah
Lawrence College in New York or Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania, both of which have offered her scholarships if she attends. At the district’s June business meeting, the Board of Education recognized Ciccone for her success at the Hunting-Tony Awards. Additionally, Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern presented Ciccone with a proclamation from the Town of Huntington.
Awaiting the Future The rainy weather could not put a damper on the pride and beaming smiles of the Harborfields High School Class of 2015 as they celebrated the 56th commencement exercises on Saturday, June 27th. Seniors entered the high school gymnasium dressed in the traditional Harborfields gowns of green and white, and were greeted with an outpouring of cheers from the stands and triumphant sounds delivered by the high school band. Following a special performance by graduating senior members of the high school choir singing The Star Spangled Banner, Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro took to the podium to congratulate the hardworking class. “Based on our observations throughout your high school years, it has been quite evident that as a class
and individually you have continually demonstrated your willingness to go above and beyond to support your school and community,” said Superintendent Todaro. Salutatorian Jamie Letourneau, Class president Katherine Ryan and Valedictorian Eli Slamowitz spoke fondly of their classmates and provided words of encouragement for the future. “I’m excited to explore, to learn, live and grow and to paint my own picture along the way,” said Slamowitz. “That’s what is so incredible about today. None of our stories will be the same, but everyone’s story will be worth listing to.” Following an address by the elected guest speaker by the Class of 2015, English teacher Kristen Gavin, Principal Dr. Rory Manning shared with the
students an important story about life that he hopes the graduates will reflect in their own life endeavors. “As Harborfields graduates you have now built a solid foundation that you can start building your life,” said Dr. Manning. As a supplement to his story, Dr. Manning placed a key under each graduates’ chair to help them remember the story and work their best at everything in life. As soon as the presentation was finished, the students pulled off their caps and tossed them in the air – an act that completed their special day. The ceremony ended with a wave of smiles and praise as the graduates celebrated this milestone achievement. Congratulations to the 2015 graduating class of Harborfields High School.

Stella Blue Porzungolo, an Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior, received Honorable Mention in the senior division of the DuPont Science Essay Challenge. Among thousands of entries, Porzungolo was selected as one of 34 winners from across the country and Canada. Porzungolo’s essay entitled “Using Environmental Sciences and Urbanism to Build a Greener Future,”
focused on developing potential solutions for problems related to global warming and the changing climate. According to the DuPont website, the challenge consisted of two primary objectives: to help increase science literacy among students and to motivate students to excel in communicating science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts.

Eco-Friendly Alternatives Sharika Krish, an Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Long Island Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council for demonstrating a commitment to enhancing and promoting sustainability in the community. Available to high school seniors on Long Island, the U.S. Green Council of Long Island scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated academic prowess, inspiration, generosity and benevolence in ecofriendly concepts. To
apply for the scholarship, Krish provided her high school transcript, a letter of recommendation and wrote two academic essays. For her essay submissions, Krish answered the question “How would you use LEED and/or sustainable design practices for a Green Building Project in your school to guarantee a successfully implemented project that provides the intended sustainability objectives?” She was also asked to define two ways water is consumed in her school and what can be done to mitigate the 25% increase expense that Long

As a culmination to their unit on community service employees, students in Lisa Rosenthal’s class at James H. Boyd Winner and received Intermediate School in the several prestigious awards Elwood Union Free School including the Presidential District received a visit Excellence Award, from the Greenlawn Fire PTSA Silver Medal in Department and a Suffolk English, National School County police officer. During the visit, Orchestra Award and the students learned about Elwood Music Sponsors Scholarship in Orchestra. While interacting with the firefighters, students had an up-close experience with a fire truck and tried their hand at spraying the fire hose. Suffolk County police officer Dave Weinerman taught students about the importance of law
enforcement and the type of equipment he needs for his job such as handcuffs. Each student had the opportunity to sit on Officer Weinerman’s Suffolk County Police motorcycle and ask questions about the types of responsibilities his job entails.

At the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Senior Awards Ceremony, Trevor Lochan and Kelsey Hackett were revealed as the valedictorian and salutatorian of the ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School graduating Class of 2015. During his time at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School, Lochan was an active member of the National Honor Society, high school soccer team, Habitat for Humanity and Knowledge Masters. Along with graduating at the top of his class, Lochan received the Presidential Excellence Award, was a Commended Student in the National Merit
Scholarship Program and received the American Chemical Society Award. Lochan will continue his academic career at Colombia University with a major in biology on the track to premedical studies. “I am going to miss the close knit community here in Elwood,” Lochan said. “You really feel like one big family.” Since Hackett began her educational journey at the kindergarten level, she flourished academically through the Elwood school system. In addition to her academic success in high school, Hackett was a member of the Science Olympiad Club, high school chorus and chamber choir and Mathletes. As a talented student-musician, Hackett played the viola in various music festivals including the Long Island Youth Orchestra Music Festival. At the awards ceremony, Hackett was announced a National Merit Scholarship

Supported by the district’s Shared Decision Making Committee, Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District welcomed the addition of a buddy bench to their schoolyard. Last year, first-grade student RJ Calanese developed the concept of the buddy bench, which offers students a place
to gather and make new friends. In spring 2015, the bench was installed and a contest was held for second-grade students to design a plaque that would hang above the buddy bench. The Shared Decision Making Committee collectively voted on four students’ artwork and encouraged the second-grade contest
winners RJ Calanese, Joseph Matranga, Ellie Mitola and Grace Shepard to work together, under the advisement of reading teacher Mrs. Parker, to design one plaque. After combing their individual design ideas, the art piece was transformed into a plaque and is now hung above the bench.

Celebrating the End As the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Class of 2015 walked to the triumphant sounds of Pomp and Circumstance during the school’s 53rd commencement exercises, they also took the next steps into a future of possibilities. Throughout the ceremony, members of the board of education, students, teachers, and welcomed guest were musically entertained in between presentations leading up to the conferring of diplomas and the ceremonial cap toss. Interim Principal Dr. James Ruck kicked off the ceremony by asking a simple request of the graduates. “My request to you is that you continue to take on your short and long-term challenges with the same level of decency that you exhibited in Elwood,” he said. “May you move on to the next chapter in your lives with memories of your extended family and friends in Elwood and spread the
spirit with the approach that impacts others.” Board of Education President Joseph Fusaro and Board of Education Vice President Dan Ciccone provided words of wisdom and encouragement as the students begin the next chapter of their lives. For their last performance as Glenn students, graduates joined their fellow band and chorus members. The band performed the classic composition “Hunting Scene,” by Satoshi Yagisawa while the mixed chorus sang “Little Wonders” by Rob Thomas. Following the address by Senior Class President Allison Biancardi, Salutatorian Kelsey Hackett delivered her speech in the form of a letter where she expressed her appreciation for the friendships and support that she experienced throughout the years. “To the class of 2015, thank you for all the wisdom you have imparted on me. Thank you for the laughter,
thank you for helping me become who I am today,” said Hackett. “There are feelings and memories that we share that no one else ever will… and by these things we are bonded forever.” Valedictorian Trevor Lochan took a different approach to his speech and encouraged his classmates to make the most of the opportunities life has to offer. “Most importantly we learned that our time is not unlimited, we are not invincible and so we might as well enjoy our lives,” Lochan said. “Right now all of you are lucky enough to chase whatever dream you want and some of you don’t know what dream you want to chase and that is perfectly okay. Go out and explore. Your success in life is determined by how well you pursue those things and let them shape your life.” Following a special presentation by the senior class officers, Dr. Ruck distributed the
first two posthumous diplomas to the parents of Sean Urda and sister of Matthew Lawrence, two Glenn students who sadly passed away before their high school graduation. Superintendent of Schools Peter Scordo read the certification of
requirements that each graduate demonstrated to received their diploma. After Dr. Ruck and members of the Board of Education presented the diplomas, the senior class officers led the graduates in turning their tassels from right to left and
joyfully tossed their caps in the air. To the commotion of cheers and applause, the graduates took their first steps as newly anointed Elwood alumni. Congratulations to the Class of 2015!

Top of the Class Slamowitz was a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program and was awarded the PTA Council Scholarship. Slamowitz humbly expressed his greatest achievement as the experiences he has had with the people he came in contact with during his time at Harborfields. “I’d like to think I have had an impact on other people as they have impacted me,” Slamowitz said. “Being able to grow up with students here and watch the people they have become is awesome to me.” Letourneau began her education in Harborfields at the kindergarten level. As an active member of her school and community, Letourneau was a member of the student government, the Interact Club, Habitat for Humanity, National Honor Society and Italian Honor Society. She also volunteers as a tutor at the Harborfields Public Library and is a member of the Town of Huntington’s Youth Council. In her freshman and sophomore
year, Letourneau played on the girls lacrosse team and track team. In addition to being the salutatorian, Letourneau received numerous awards and scholarships including the Order of the Sons of Italy Arturo Toscanini Lodge Excellence in Italian Award, PTA Council Scholarship, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal Award, University of Pennsylvania C&E Barr Scholarship and the University of Pennsylvania Penn Grant. “I am going to miss the close Harborfields community in and out of school,” she said. “It is nice to live in a community that cares about you.” In the fall, both Slamowitz and Letourneau will continue their educational careers at the University of Pennsylvania. Slamowitz plans to attend the university’s Wharton School of Business with a major in economics. Letourneau will attend the university’s School of Arts & Sciences to study mathematical economics.

Following years of dedication to academics and the community, Eli Slamowitz and Jamie Letourneau received the titles of valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the Harborfields High School graduating Class of 2015. Since secondgrade, Slamowitz has been a student in the Harborfields education system. Throughout his educational journey, Slamowitz has excelled academically and embraced the opportunities at the middle and high school levels. During his time at Harborfields High School, Slamowitz became a member of the golf team, track team, the Wall Street Club, National Honor Society, Second Language Honor Society and the Global Justice Club.
