Community of Hearts: An Art Exhibit in Remembrance of 9/11 In recognition of the many lives impacted 20 years ago on September 11, the Library is organizing a community art exhibit featuring hearts painted on canvases. As a Library and community, we will come together with our “hearts” to remember the tragic events of that day. All ages are invited to take part in this emotive project that will fill the Library with love. At a recent meeting of the Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education, the board recognized a member of the community and two members of the Board for their unwavering dedication to the community and the district’s staff and students. The meeting began with the recognition of Tiogo Magden, owner of Mozzarella’s Pizza in East Northport, for his

longstanding support of district events and activities through countless charitable acts over many years. Additionally, the board recognized two of its members, Dr. Sara Siddiqui and Deborah Weiss, as part of the New York State School Boards Association’s Recognition Program, in which board members display an outstanding commitment to completing NYSSBA training initiatives that

enhance their knowledge and skills. Concluding the recognitions, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert and the board commended the outstanding efforts of the teaching staff in observance of Teachers Appreciation Week, followed by honoring the district’s principals in recognition of Principals Appreciation Day, which was May 8.

Elwood Student Receives Scholarship

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School student Daniella Marchese was recently awarded a scholarship for Excellence in Italian presented by the

Long Island chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Italian. Daniella was selected for this scholarship from among eligible students

through a selection process which included a review of students’ grade point average, a video submission, an essay and teacher recommendations.

Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonprofit organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others. The importance of community should never be overlooked, and Blue Umbrella Experience definitely understands that! The classes that this nonprofit offer either take place at their new location, which is 150 Motor Parkway, Suite 11, Hauppauge, NY 11788 or online! Some classes they offer are: Yoga, Martial Arts, Acting and Improv, Music Appreciation, Art, Digital Design and Technology, World Cultures, History of Walt Disney, Languages and Humanities, Personal Development, Finances and Math for everyday use, Communications, Animals & Nature and Cooking for all abilities and all levels. “We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonprofit Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive

Transition Program and first and foremost, a love of supporting positive growth in their students; and so, through our Above and Beyond Community Class initiative, BUE’s community has grown to an incredible group of over 80 individuals from all over and ranging in age from 14 into their thirties.” Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning. To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other. Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. Also, if you would like to volunteer your time to help fulfill their mission, you can! Lastly, donations are always appreciated. Northport-East Northport School District Awarded $1 Million On May 26, the NorthportEast Northport school district was notified by Senator James Gaughran that the district will be receiving $1 million in additional revenue, which is the result of a provision in the state budget that allocates funds for school districts impacted by circumstances

due to tax certiorari events. These unanticipated additional power plant relied funds have now been factored into the district’s revised budget, which was presented at the Board of Education meeting Thursday, May 27 at 7 p.m. at Northport High School. Due to these unanticipated funds, the

district is proposing a 0% tax levy increase for the 2021-22 school year. “This unanticipated revenue has allowed us to maintain our educational program and fund necessary improvements to our school buildings while simultaneously easing the tax burden on our community”
