We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which
affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall
be doing the same. Such is the circle of life. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it. Happy Summer to all.

Battling with Books Throughout the 20152016 school year, fourthand fifth-grade students in the ELA LEAP enrichment program at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District independently read more than eight chapter books they selected from a list of 10. As a culminating activity to test their book knowledge, students participated in a Battle of the Books competition.
To participate in the competition, students signed out books from their classroom library and read at their own pace. Beginning in October, they kept reading journals as a way for them to reflect on what they read during the year. Divided into teams of four to five students, the book experts worked collaboratively to answer book trivia questions. To acquire points, students
answered questions and received additional points for bonus questions and steal points from an opposing team. Medals were awarded to first-, second- and third-place winning teams. Following the competition, students gathered together to celebrate their hard work and reading accomplishments during a special party.

On Thursday, June 16th, members of the Huntington Historical Society gathered at the Huntington Elks Club for the 112th annual Meeting of the organization. Attendees enjoyed a buffet dinner, and presentations were made on the Society’s 2015 activities, milestones and future goals. President Robert “Toby” Kissam welcomed the newest Trustees, Chris Voulgaris, Donna Waldenburg, and Anthony Vlachos to the Board of Directors, and Elizabeth Borst who began her second term as a Trustee. Chris Voulgaris is a lifelong Huntington resident and CPA for Certified Federal Contracts Manager, Chris also serves as the treasurer of Old Huntington Green. Donna Waldenburg has lived in Huntington for the
past 34 years volunteering her time with the local PTA, educational groups, and the Boy Scouts of America, she currently is the Executive Director of Long Island for Arts and Sciences. Anthony Vlachos is the Vice President & Cofounder of The WizdomOne Group, he is active in the Huntington Chamber of Commerce and Co-Chair of the Health & Wellness Committee to push for healthier lifestyles. Huntington Town Historian, Robert C. After the meeting ended, the members were invited to walk up the street and take a tour of the new Archives Expansion wing at the Trade School building, (still under construction).

The sun was shining and so were the radiant smiles of members of the ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School Class of 2016 as they participated in the school’s 54th commencement ceremony on June 24th. Members of the board of education, administrators, family, friends, faculty and invited guests greeted the soon-to-be graduates with an outpour of cheers as they made their way onto the football field to celebrate their milestone achievement. Prior to the conferring of the diplomas, students listened to a variety of inspirational and encouraging messages imparted by High School Interim Principal Dr. James Ruck, Board of Education President Andrew L. Kaplan and select members of the Class of 2016. Musical highlights throughout the celebration included special performances by the high school band as well as members of the concert and mixed choruses, who sang “In My Life” by John Lennon and
Paul McCartney. Valedictorian Amanda DiMartini reminisced on the transitions she endured during her educational journey and how she embraced new challenges. “In my experience, the best way to embrace change is to set new goals,” she said. “It is important to have big dreams and to allow ourselves to chase after them rather than limiting ourselves.” Class of 2016 salutatorian Zachary Wollman advised his fellow classmates to make the most of the opportunities in college and what the world has to offer. “Enroll in courses that seem interesting, play sports you are not skilled at but still enjoy anyway, make friends with people who are completely unique from anyone you have ever met, try activities completely outlandish and unfamiliar to you, be out going and open minded and you will uncover who you are through the things you come to love,” he said. “It is of utmost importance that we discover our passions and never cease in
our pursuit of them.” In his final address as Superintendent of Schools, Peter Scordo afforded congratulatory remarks to the Class of 2016. “I want to congratulate you on all your accomplishments in the classroom, on the playing field, on the stage and throughout the community,” he said. “You are an exceptional class and we look forward to hearing great things about you in the future.” In lieu of his retirement from the district, Dr. Ruck presented the first diploma to Mr. Scordo on behalf of the entire district for his years of commitment to the community and children of Elwood. Following the distribution of diplomas to the Class of 2016, the senior class officers led the group in turning their tassels and ceremonially tossed their caps into the air. Following the recessional march, they reunited with their loved ones as official alumni of the Elwood Union Free School District.

Park Renamed Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Councilman Eugene Cook joined their colleagues on the Huntington Town Board and leaders of multiple first responder agencies on Sunday, June 26th, to officially rename Verleye Park in memory of Charles A. Oddo, a New York City police officer and Commack volunteer firefighter who was killed in the line of duty 20 years ago. More than 250 people – family, friends, neighbors and former colleagues on the police force and on the fire department – attended the ceremony, which included a color guard from the New York City Police Department and the Commack Fire Department, spiritual words from a Suffolk County police chaplain and an emotional address from Oddo’s sister, Maria Oddo Forger. Following the remarks the Town Board and the family officially unveiled the sign identifying “Charles A. Oddo Verleye Park.” “We want to mark today as a day of memory, a day of celebration, as a home town recognizes a hero by dedicating a park in his name,” Supervisor Petrone said in his remarks. “Charles was an inspirational person, as a family member and as a person everyone liked. And when he was lost, people came by. They came in droves because people recognized who he really was and today, we want to put that memory here, in his home town, and we want to make sure it is everlasting…We don’t do this very often, renaming a park. This is very special whenever we rename a park.” “Recent events, like the tragic attacks in Orlando just two weeks ago, are a sobering reminder of the courageous, selfless contributions that police officers, firefighters and first responders make every single day across the country,” said Councilman Cook, who sponsored the resolution to rename the park that was unanimously passed by the Town Board in May. “That is part of the reason why it was so important for my colleagues and me to take this step to honor Charles Oddo’s memory in his hometown.” Oddo grew up walking distance from Verleye Park and played there as a child. He graduated from John Glenn High School in 1981. In 1982, he joined the Commack Fire Department, where he served as a volunteer firefighter, paramedic and mechanic.
He joined the New York City Police Department in 1990. Five years later, he was transferred to Brooklyn’s Highway Unit #2, following in the footsteps of his father, who was a Suffolk County Police Department Highway Patrol sergeant. In February 1996, while placing flares around an overturned gas truck on the Gowanus Expressway, Oddo was fatally struck by a car. He was 33. The Commack Fire Department had asked Councilman Cook about creating a memorial. After a discussion with Supervisor Petrone, it was decided that renaming the park would be most appropriate. “For generations to come, children are going to come here, and they will ask, who was Charles, what did he do,
why is the park named for him?” Councilwoman Susan A. Berland said in her remarks. “What they will hear is the story of a selfless man, who gave of himself to the fire department, to the police department, who helped his community. The best legacy he could leave would be to encourage youngsters to pursue the same goals.” Speaking for the Commack Fire Department, John Bicocchi, the department’s president and himself a retired NYPD sergeant, said, “Charlie Oddo has long been an example of what our members hope to be. He lived by a code of conduct, a work ethic instilled by his parents. He was a dedicated public servant, both at work and at
home. The Commack Fire Department has always been proud to call Charlie as one of our own. We will be will be especially proud to pass this park and continue his legacy as best we can, bringing public safety and service to the community we serve.” The most emotional part of the ceremony came when his sister, Maria Oddo Forger, spoke on behalf of the family, as their parents, Rose and Joe, looked on. Earlier, as they arrived at the park, they were greeted by a line of saluting uniformed firefighters and NYPD motorcycles, perched under a giant American flag suspended between two fire trucks. “Today, we gather together once more in the town he and I grew up in, in our neighborhood park, and celebrate his memory, his fervent heart and selfless love which sent itself out daily in helping others, never blowing a trumpet before him and never seeing his actions as being noble, no, just necessary to ensure a better outcome for someone in need,” Forger said. “Today, you show us by your loyalty to him and his memory that you are indeed, family, for you have not forgotten him nor ceased to honor his memory.” She added, “This memorial intimately resonates with me. In the past this used to be our playground, and we passed through it daily for a variety of reasons…..Standing here brings back happy memories for me of a carefree time when life was simple, innocent, fun, filled with love and laughter under the protection of my brother.” The ceremony also included an invocation and a blessing of the sign by Suffolk County Police Department chaplain John Trodden and performances by the NYPD Pipes and Drums band. Also attending were Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia and Assembs. Andrew Raia and Chad Lupinacci. “Now, when a child walks into Verleye Park and asks, ‘who is Charles Oddo?’ we can tell them the story of a brave, generous man who gave so much to his community and was taken from us far too young,” Councilman Cook said. “The children of the East Northport community will now have two angels to look after them at Verleye Park, Charles A. Oddo who the park was dedicated to and Kristin Scarabelli who the playground Kristin’s Playground is dedicated to.”

Leaving Their Mark of Schools Diana Todaro, since this was the last graduation she would be part of as superintendent, in lieu of her retirement. In her greeting, Todaro expressed her delight in the success each of the members of the Class of 2016 achieved during their time in the Harborfields school system. Additionally, she conferred the first diploma to Dr. Manning, who will be transitioning to the role of assistant superintendent for administration and human resources, effective August 1st. In his final speech as high school principal, Dr. Manning shared with students highlights from his personal life journey, through which he told by “connecting the dots,” an analogy coined by Steve Jobs. “Have faith that your dots will connect in ways that you can’t image,” he said. As a reminder of the
story, Dr. Manning placed a packet of mints under each graduate’s chair with the message. The mints represented the “dots” or events that they have already experienced in their lives. To conclude her valedictorian speech, Qi advised her fellow graduates, “Miss the person you were yesterday, celebrate who you are now, and look with curiosity and excitement toward the version of yourself that you’ll be tomorrow.” Upon receiving their diplomas, the newly conferred Harborfields graduates turned their tassels and cheerfully tossed their caps in the air. As the high school band performed the recessional, the graduates took their first steps as official Harborfields alumni. Congratulations to the Class of 2016.

Petrone encourages all Town residents to obtain a copy of the 2016 edition of the Town’s Hurricane Preparedness Handbook, which is now available in printed or electronic form. “Just because Long Island has been hurricane free since being devastated by Super Storm Sandy four years ago, it does not mean this year will be, too,” Supervisor Petrone said in his introductory message. “That is why, even as Sandy fades a little further into our memory, we still need to be prepared for the possibility that a similar storm could hit this year.” He added in the message, “We want you - whether you are a resident or a business, an individual or a large family - to be ready for any weather emergency. Take the time now to read this booklet, follow its advice and make the preparations so that you, your family, your neighbors and your
pets have the best chance of weathering the next storm.” The Handbook includes details on what should be included in a family’s hurricane response plan, an emergency supply checklist, suggested contents of a “Go Kit’ in case of an evacuation and tips on pet safety. A page is dedicated to preparedness tips for business owners. The handbook also includes on-line, telephone and electronic media links for obtaining information. The 16-page handbook will be available at Town Hall and the Town’s Senior Center or by contacting the Town Fire Marshal’s office. It can also be viewed or downloaded from the Town’s website, at http://www. huntingtonny.gov/filestorage/13749/13857/2016hurricanehandbook_4.pdf. “Whether it is a winter storm, or a nor’easter, or a hurricane, being informed and being prepared for a potential weather event

Sit with your family and your neighbors to discuss various scenarios and your responses. And don’t forget your pets. Did you prepare for them as well?” The Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1st and runs through November 30th. Typically, Long Island is considered most vulnerable in the later part of the season, September and October.

Veterans Service Seminar
In an effort to ensure that veterans in the community are receiving all of the benefits they are deserving of and entitled to, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory hosted a Veterans Services Seminar at Farmingdale State College on Thursday, June 23rd. The seminar brought together government agencies, nonprofit organizations, advocates, veterans and their families to exchange information about how to access and manage available services, benefits and assistance. Presentations addressed a broad range of topics, including housing, health, financial services, education, employment, business development, estate planning, selfhelp and legal services. Agencies networked and
shared strategies. “The importance of making sure that those who protect our country are properly taken care of when they return home cannot be overstated,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Many veterans aren’t aware of the plethora of services that are available to them. Having all of these agencies together in one room was a great opportunity for them to connect, collaborate and thoroughly explain the benefits available and ensure veterans can easily access them. I would like to thank all of the agencies that participated, and a special thanks to Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency Director Tom Ronayne for helping to coordinate this event.” On hand were presenters from various agencies including the Suffolk
County Veterans Service Agency, Veterans Protected, Touro Law Center, Northport VA Medical Center, Farmingdale College Small Business Development Center, Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project, Long Island Cares Inc. The Danger According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, senior citizens account for only 9 percent of the population but almost 14 percent of fatal traffic accidents. As people age, their driving patterns change. Retirement, different schedules and new activities affect when and where they drive. Although most older adults drive safely because they have a lot of experience behind
the wheel, when they are involved in crashes, they may be hurt more seriously than younger drivers. Many see driving as an important part of staying independent, and people 70 and older tend to keep their licenses longer and drive more miles than in the past. What To Do Elderly drivers and the people who care for them should have a trusted doctor check their eyes and reflexes to determine whether they should be driving anymore. If it seems a driver you care about should be off the road, listen to
his or her concerns and feelings on the subject. Explore the possibilities. Are there solutions that could keep him or her driving safely longer, such as getting new glasses or only driving during the day? Try to arrange for alternative transportation so he doesn’t feel trapped at home. If she sells her car, remind her of the money she’ll save on insurance and maintenance—which can be used for buses and taxis. Having this talk may not be easy but you could save a life.

That’s because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-quarter of the U.S. population reports occasionally not getting enough sleep, while nearly 10 percent experience chronic insomnia. Why To Sleep Good sleep, says the CDC, can decrease the risk of sickness and weight
gain. It helps you think more clearly, decreases stress, and leaves you more energetic and productive. As these qualities improve, relationships tend to improve, too. Lack of sleep can be a problem on the job, too. A study by the Law Enforcement Survival Institute showed that in a computer simulated shoot/ don’t shoot situation, fatigued police officers were more likely to shoot when not necessary. What To Do
Many sleep specialists recommend these four steps: 1. Don’t drink caffeine late in the day. 2. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark and relaxing environment; neither too hot nor too cold. 3. Make sure your bed is comfortable and don’t use it for reading, watching TV or listening to music. 4. Take a bath before bedtime.
