The Heart of the Matter “I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the world.” ~ Henry Luce As I sit here at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon composing my thoughts for this column, one can’t help but reflect upon the latest in a long line of tragic shootings to touch the nation, this time at the headquarters of the Capital Gazette, an Annapolis newspaper founded in 1727. Among the five fatalities were veteran editors, writers and reporters, as well as a sales assistant to the staff. To think that a random act of violence on an otherwise average day could at once shatter so many lives is quite jarring. Of course, we as a society have become all too accustomed to dealing with tragedies of this sort; places that were once deemed to be “safe” can no longer be guaranteed so. Schools, churches, movie theaters . . . the list goes on and on. Year after year, these senseless acts have invaded our

societal comfort zone, making it increasingly difficult to look the other way. There is simply no rhyme or reason to the madness and where it may strike next. Of course, being of the journalism profession and working in an office much like the one brought to its knees last Thursday, this particular incident resonates on a slightly deeper level. The sentiment expressed by one Gazette reporter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, “I can tell you this: we are putting out a damned newspaper tomorrow,” is one that rings true for nearly every publication through history that has been faced with a measure of adversity. From storms and natural disasters to power outages, union strikes and the like, journalism is one of the few industries that seldom “stops the presses” for any reason. Just a few years ago, many local community newspapers were faced with the prospect of not publishing in the

wake of Hurricane Sandy, as the majority of Long Island remained without power in the days and weeks following. But ultimately, the need to forge ahead, to provide readers with a lifeline to their surroundings, prevailed. As promised, the Capital Gazette came out with its Friday edition, the headline “5 Shot Dead at the Capital” splashed across the front cover. Simple. And yet so far from simple. Within the paper were written articles covering the attack and photos of the victims. But perhaps most poignant was the page normally reserved for opinions and editorials, which was left blank. In the white space were the words: Today, we are speechless. This page is intentionally left blank to commemorate the victims of Thursday’s shooting at our office. What followed were the names of the five employees who were killed, one to a line. At the end of the day, there is really not much more to say.

Pool Safety Discussion The warm weather is here, and there’s no better way to stay cool and comfortable than with a nice dip in the swimming pool! However, safety must always come first so before school was out, Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly met with students at Birchwood Intermediate School in Melville to discuss pool safety tips and honor those who participated in Suffolk County’s 2018 “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Established in 2007, the annual competition invites elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety and prevent accidental drownings by creating a poster illustrating safety tips. Joining Legislator Donnelly in honoring third-grade students Julia Montilla, Bianca Ruiz and Ariana Sosa, who each received Suffolk County Certificates of Distinguished

Achievement, was their Principal Mr. Anthony Ciccarelli, teachers Ms. Caitlin Bishop and Ms. Katherine Dueñas and their classmates. Some of the safety tips that Legislator Donnelly discussed with the students included: • Always swim with a buddy; • Never push or jump on others; • Always remove toys from the pool, which can be very tempting to young children; • Never leave children of any age alone in or near the water; • Children can drown in just a few inches of water so be sure to empty the pool cover; • Keep a first aid kit stocked and available near the pool; • Know how to dial 9-1-1 and how to get help in an emergency; • Learn to swim!

In the “Be Pool Smart” poster contest, one entry is selected from all of those submitted Countywide to be used as a part of a seasonal safety campaign from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. Students from schools in South Huntington, Half Hollow Hills, Deer Park and North Babylon School Districts were invited to participate in this year’s District 17 preliminary competition. “It was clear that the students had given great thought into the importance of pool safety and I appreciated their enthusiasm in sharing their personal experiences and some of their own safety tips,” said Legislator Donnelly. “This, combined with the information provided by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, should go a long way in making it a great and safe summer season for all.”

Moving Forward The Experience of a Lunchtime Zen with Clark Lambert

tranquility to your mind and body. There is no one way to approach this scene, nor to obtain the many benefits available to you. After doing a lot of thinking about the best way to accomplish this, I decided to explain how I would go about it - step by step. What you are about to read is the result of my own many years of study and experience in the art of Zen. As such, one should not expect the same results by merely trying the same method. However, it will at least give you the basics of how this method can achieve success. A while ago, my wife and I decided to take a weekend in Key West, just as a change of pace and to relax. At that time, I was working in Miami, so it meant only a relaxing drive from that city due south down toward the Keys. Since it was approaching late afternoon, once at the hotel, we were anxious to take the short walk to the pier, buy a drink and take in a view of the setting sun. If you have never been to the Keys, you are probably unaware that, as the sun sets (a bright golden-red), it appears to cover the entire horizon in a blaze of color! As I knew that this was to become a Zen experience, I prepared myself for it.

As the sun began to set, I took several deep breaths and did a brief meditation. I then opened my eyes and found myself completely immersed in the moment. Having my wife with me and feeling a great peace within myself only added to the joy of the moment as the sun sank lower on the horizon. It was an amazing sight - most people sat in awe, and a few even clapped! To complete the moment and finish the experience, we found a small café on the water where one could have dinner and watch the fishing boats return to the harbor. This experience was heightened by taking in the sights and sounds of the harbor itself – the slight breeze coming off the water, the occasional sounds of the ships unloading their catch of the day and the screeching of seagulls who follow the ships in every night to pick up the fish scraps and enjoy their impromptu dinner. To help you further understand the Zen process, here are some broad guidelines to follow. • As the fishing boats follow the lighthouse markers that guide them to the harbor, so does a short meditation prior to Zen. • Always keep in mind that the art of

Zen takes many months (even years) to master. Do not be discouraged or impatient as you learn. You will find that completion of even the smallest of steps will give you pleasure. • It may be beneficial for you to partner up with a close friend who can mutually experience the value as you follow the real world of Zen. Success and failure are usually minimized when you have someone to share them with. KEY POINT Here is a true Zen story which will further illustrate a key point of discovery at the heart of Zen. I was travelling throughout the deep south on a business trip. At mid-morning, I stopped at a small donut shop for a quick break. When I walked in, I was struck by their wall display. It was a very large donut hung on the wall, but what quickly caught my eye were the words underneath. It said: As you go through life brother, whatever your goal, keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole. It took only a few moments to realize that those words represented a true Zen philosophy! Peace

One of the many solid principles of Zen is that, when you read or see several pages of text, you then contemplate the highlights in your mind before going on to the next section. We will do this now, shifting the scene a bit from the written word to a visual experience. Here we go... There is a local radio station that, when approaching the lunchtime hour (around 12 noon) will describe a picture of a tranquil scene - usually a fountain, a view of the park with people enjoying themselves, and so on. They will tell us that we are experiencing a “lunchtime Zen.” Now, I have never see any type of poll where the average person knows exactly what a “lunchtime Zen” really is. I guess the station feels that, if it makes people feel happy, that’s enough - and probably so. However, moving forward, let’s unravel this puzzle together. To clarify, the mere sight of a beautiful scene does not automatically trigger a Zen response. This is when your body, mind and the environment blend together in unison. Over time, and with repeated practice, one finds a deeper sense of fulfillment, coupled with a greater sense of yourself - bringing deeper peace and

Celebrating Northport 2018 to Superintendent Robert Banzer and the board of education, Principal Danbusky shared some words of wisdom with the soon-to-be-graduates. “Don’t live life as a check-list focused on getting the right answers,” Danbusky advised the students. “It’s important to be right, but not when it comes at the cost of your own development. Always remember: learning is a process. The more you accept the process, the more you’ll enjoy your life.” After receiving their diplomas from members of the board of education, valedictorian Daniel O’Connor stepped up to the podium to address his fellow classmates. “In a sense, uncertainty is nothing new to us,” he said. “We’ve been dealing with it all of our lives. Who knew what elementary school would be like on the first day of first grade? Who knew what dramatic turns our lives would take in high school? None of us had these answers, and yet somehow we learned to embrace the uncertainty. Thanks to our time here at Northport, our education has extended far beyond academics, and we’re ready to step into this new season of our lives, prepared to embrace the unknown.” Following O’Connor’s speech, the seniors moved their tassels from right to left, and exuberantly tossed their caps into the air - and the young men and women who entered the auditorium as seniors left as Northport High School alumni.

Celebrations abounded at Northport High School on June 23rd as families and friends paid tribute to the graduating Class of 2018. In two separate ceremonies, the 537 young men and women stepped onto the stage to accept their diplomas and take the next step towards the future. The festivities kicked off with “Pomp and Circumstance,” which was performed by the Graduation Honor Band. Seniors processed down the aisles to their seats, cheered on by family members and loved ones. Student Elizabeth Caccavale lead the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a performance of the national anthem by the Northport High School Choir. After principal Daniel Danbusky’s opening welcome to all in attendance, and a beautifully harmonious rendition of “Field of Gold” performed by the high school choir, Salutatorian Nicholas Holfester addressed his fellow classmates. He took a moment to reflect on the class’ four years at Northport High School, and all the years prior that brought each graduate to this point. “If I can offer you all one piece of advice for the future, it’s this…look up,” he urged them. “Look to find the wonder in life - to find the new in the familiar, and the beauty in the ordinary. During the Harborfields Central School District’s last Board of Education Meeting of the 2017-2018 school year, members of the school community were recognized for their hard work and dedication to excellence. Faculty, staff and community members who went above and beyond this year were recognized, as well as those who were retiring, and moving into a new stage of life. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni welcomed all in attendance, and remarked on the special nature of the night, for both award winners and retirees. “This night is unique in that it marks the beginning of a new chapter for some, but also recognizes the passion and dedication that’s put into our school system every day,” said Dr. Ianni, “and it gives us an opportunity to reflect on what we’ve gone through— to really step back and realize the importance of all we’ve contributed.” Principals and central administrators congratulated each

retiree individually, recalling special moments throughout their career, and commended them for all of their hard work. Tickets are still available for the annual Ms. New York Senior America pageant to be held on July 29th at 2 p.m. at the Madison Theatre at Molly College in Rockville Centre. Pageant contestants from across New York State will compete in evening gown, philosophy of life, judges Interview and talent categories. The Ms. Senior America Pageant is the first and foremost pageant to emphasize and give honor to women who have reached the “Age of Elegance” (60 and over). It is the search for the gracious lady who best exemplifies dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all senior Americans. The Ms. Senior America Pageant’s philosophy is based upon the belief that seniors are the foundation of America, and our most valuable treasure. It is upon their knowledge, experience and resources that the younger generation has the opportunity to build a better society. The current Ms. New York Senior America, Lee Ann Brill, will crown the winner for the coming year. Featured speaker Casey Sturm, English teacher, addressed the graduates while speaking about when he was in their shoes as a Harborfields High School student. “I can’t wait to see how you change the world,” he said. Principal Timothy Russo congratulated the graduates while offering words of advice as they embark onto the next chapter of their lives. “Don’t sit back and not take advantage because you are afraid of failure… embrace the opportunity

and enjoy the moment,” he said. “And whatever the results are, you’ll find some satisfaction even if there was adversity.” Russo also presented each graduate with an evergreen tree, symbolizing the foundation and roots of their support system. “Let this be a reminder to you of Harborfields and what you’ve meant to us,” he said. Before the presentation of diplomas, Russo took a special moment to honor Maggie Schmidt, a member of the Class of 2018 who passed away in June 2017 after her courageous battle with cancer. The Schmidt family was present to accept her diploma on her behalf. Following Russo’s heartfelt speech of how Schmidt touched the lives of everyone she met, the board of education presented each graduate with their diplomas. After moving their tassels from the right to left to commemorate their completion of high school, the graduates tossed their caps high in unison, officially marking them as Harborfields High School alumni.

East Northport Middle School held their ceremony on June 19th, and Northport Middle School’s celebration took place on June 20th. During both ceremonies, the graduates entered the auditorium to processional music as proud family members looked on, cheering enthusiastically for their students. After the Pledge of Allegiance, both select choirs led the attendees in a beautifully

harmonious National Anthem. East Northport Middle School Principal Pasquale DeStefano addressed the graduating class, advising them to challenge themselves to grow, and to do good regardless of what others are doing. “Go out there and be the best version of yourself,” he told them, “and look for ways to positively affect your school, and community.” At Northport Middle School’s ceremony, assistant principal Chelsea Brown commended students for being prepared for this next phase in their lives. “You made it through, and you’re ready to continue your journey to high school — and the high school is ready for you to

help you reach your goals and achieve your dreams.” She urged them to never give up even in the face of adversity. “Sometimes you win, and sometimes you learn,” she added. Principal Tim Hoss dubbed them “the class with special enthusiasm,” and urged them to continue to keep stepping up to the world boldly and to embrace the unexpected. After numerous academic and community awards were presented to outstanding students, each member of the future class of 2022 walked across the stage and received a certificate of completion as their names were announced, crossing the threshold into a new and exciting season of life — high school.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards.

As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island feels they can never have enough people to volunteer. If you would like to help keep our island home to some of the most beautiful and top-rated beaches in America, then consider volunteering with CSLI! They take volunteers to help with beach cleanups, planting oysters, collecting relevant data, maintaining tanks, releasing into the harbor and office work.

Lastly, they help restore by partnering with the Town of Brookhaven to run a restoration Throughout the month of July, I will program where they grow oysters present various ways that you can and seed local harbors. They help those at Coastal Steward Long strive to establish a self-sustaining Island to preserve, educate and population of oysters in Long take action! Island’s harbors.

CSLI helps educate others through their marine education program, which brings students to visit the Marine Environmental Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. Students will gain hands on experiences so they can understand the local marine ecology. They help preserve by leading cleanups in local communities to prevent marine debris from contaminating our beaches and injuring local wildlife through preservation efforts. Through working with businesses, community groups, schools and local government, they bring volunteers out for a day on the beach, where they gain
