Three outstandingly community-minded students from Northport High School were recently recognized by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program for their service of the surrounding community. This youthrecognition program chooses recipients solely on volunteer and community service and is the largest in the country. Sophomore sisters Emily and Kaitlyn Berger and senior Charlotte Bender were recognized by the program as local honorees and were congratulated by their principal Daniel Danbusky on June 13. For many years, Emily and Kaitlyn have served the community with their family by preparing food and gift bags for families in need by and donating them to local food pantries, the Northport VA, and section eight housing. Both of them serve almost every weekend and enjoy filling bags and writing encouraging notes to people in need. “It truly feels so much better to give than to receive,” said Emily. Graduating senior Charlotte Bender was recognized for her commitment to volunteering in the Commack ambulance core, in which she assists local EMTs and paramedics. Charlotte volunteers at least once a week for a shift up to seven hours and has earned her NYS first Responder card. Additionally, Charlotte has helped run an annual toy drive at the high school. Both Kaitlyn Berger and Charlotte bender were also recognized for having gone above and beyond their community service requirement, making them recipients of the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Rebuilding Together Long Island
Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and
he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Kindergarten through eighth grade students from the Elwood Union Free School District “STEM”u-lated their brains on the evening of June 12 at the district’s annual Maker Faire. The evening, consisting of forty different stations and workshops, was centered around fun ways of interacting with the basics of physics and engineering through hands-on learning. Each area of STEM (Science, Technology, and Engineering, and Mathematics’) was represented with stations run by volunteer district faculty and John H. Glenn students. Accompanied by their
parents, K–8 students indulged their scientific curiosity by visiting the “Squishy Circuit” station, where they learned to make a working electrical circuit with play dough, learned how to manipulate a VEX robot to complete block challenges, played a larger-than-life game of chutes and ladders, tested their math skills in a multiplication war and much more. “Our goal is to create experiences that allow parents and family members to be learning partners with our students,” said Eileen Kelly-Gorman, director of math, science and technology. “We love to see our students just as excited
to learn as they are to have fun.” Parents both looked on proudly and jumped in on activities with their children, marveling at their resourcefulness and determination to successfully complete the tasks set before them. “The amount of resources we have available through district materials, as well as generous donations from various community organizations, allow students to explore the world of STEM,” said Instructional Technology Specialist Krista Albrecht, “and it is so wonderful to watch students and parents discovering and learning side by side at an event like this.”
Retirees Honored Prior to its regular business meeting on June 19, the board of education held a special reception to honor retiring members of the Harborfields Central School District for the years in which they wholeheartedly served their school community. Following Superintendent Dr. Francesco Ianni’s welcoming remarks, principals and central administrators congratulated each retiree individually, recalling special moments throughout their career, and commended them for all of their hard work. Embodying Stewardship County Executive Steve Bellone and Chief Sustainability Officer Frances Reid recently visited Elwood Middle School to check in on the Suffolk Share recycling program. The district was nominated to pilot this program last year and has been working dutifully to contribute positively to the environment. The Community Service Club, which executes and oversees the school’s
recycling efforts as well as tracking collections, took Mr. Bellone and Ms. Reid through a day in their recycling routine. They exhibited their collection and weighing of items and displayed their log of items collected. Additionally, students shared other aspects of the Community Service Club with their visitors, such as annual fundraisers that are hosted in order to give back to the surrounding
community. Mr. Bellone and Ms. Reid thanked the students for enthusiastic efforts and shared inspiring recycling facts with them to encourage them to continue. “With your support, we are creating lifelong stewards of the environment,” said Mr. Bellone, “as well as EMBODYING STEWARDSHIP - County Executive Steve Bellone and Chief community ambassadors!” Sustainability Officer Frances Reid visited Elwood Middle School and were led through the school’s recycling routine by the Community Service Club. The students of Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District received a gold star at the No Place for Hate Recognition Ceremony for the second year in a row on June 7. No Place for Hate, a movement instated by the Anti-Defamation League, seeks to improve and maintain school climates in which all students can prosper by taking action to promote anti-bias and anti-bullying within the schools. Thomas J. Lahey was awarded a gold star for going above and beyond the requirements to be named a No Place for Hate School — namely, by hosting four schoolwide activities to promote kindness. Activities included “Start
with Hello” week, the Kindness Project, the Peaceful School Bus and a scarf-making fundraiser to benefit Autism Speaks. Along with school administration and select teachers, Thomas J. Lahey’s No Place for Hate committee consists of six teacher-nominated students. “These students all exhibit shining character, show inclusivity to all of their peers, and are all around kind human beings,” said committee advisor and physical education teacher Michele Turchiano. Even though school was closed for these students on June 7, they still excitedly made the trek to the York College Performing Arts Center in Queens to
accept a new banner that celebrates their school’s accomplishment. “We do our best to bring everyone together, no matter what race, gender or color they are,” said Kemar, one of the committee members. “We want to bring more positivity into our future.” Students on the committee echoed each other’s sentiments, commenting that making people feel like they belong is of the utmost importance. “People may not remember you, or the things you say, but they’ll remember how you made them feel,” said committee member Yoselin. “So we’re going to keep spreading kindness and leading by example.”
PSEG Employee Takes Challenge To The Next Level Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees, including Paul DiBenedetto of East Northport, recently participated in the Marie Kondo Challenge to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Led by the company’s volunteer group, ASPIRE— Asians & Pacific Islanders Reaching for Excellence, employees were challenged to clean out unneeded and unwanted items and clothing from their homes. The Lunar New Year spring cleaning is a tradition in some Asian cultures that symbolizes a fresh start to a prosperous new year. As a result of the challenge, two vanloads of clothing were donated to LI Coalition for the Homeless. “Volunteering gives you the opportunity to make a positive difference in someone else’s life that
you may not interact with on a day-to-day basis,” said Paul DiBenedetto, PSEG Long Island employee/East Northport resident. “I’ve been involved in a number of volunteer events over the years, and I always look forward to volunteering because you can tell you’re appreciated for the work you’re doing, which makes you want to do it again and again.” “This was a wonderful way to embrace the diversity of our employees, while supporting the community we serve,” said PSEG Long Island’s ASPIRE president Linda Zhang. “Not only did our participants have fun doing their spring cleaning, but we were able to help those in our community meet some basic needs. All in all, it was a wonderful event that helped many people.”

At the culmination of a child development and babysitting unit, eighth graders in Ms. Ilene Fucci’s class at Elwood Middle School had the opportunity to meet a sweet oneyear-old named Vivienne to gain some hands-on experience. Many students in the class had never

Acts Of Kindness At the Harborfields Central School District’s last Board of Education meeting of the 2018-19 school year, five exceedingly compassionate students were commended for being recognized by the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission’s Anti-Bias Task Force. Recently, in response to acts of violence committed during a Jewish
holiday, students Areeba Malik, Esha Malik, Rebecca Pashman, Zoe Krief, and Joshua Krief participated in Interfaith Outreach through the Huntington Jewish Center. Working together, students created baskets and goodie bags to donate to local mosques in the community to show their support and love in a time of turmoil.
“Small acts of kindness like this can have such a huge impact on those around us,” said Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Administration Dr. Rory Manning, “and we commend these students for helping to make our community an even more welcoming, and wonderful place to live.”

2nd Gear Showcase
On June 20, second graders from Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District showcased what they’ve learned over the past six weeks in the 2nd Gear program — inschool enrichment that aids students in learning to express themselves through different areas of interest. “Research shows that enrichment clubs help develop the whole child,
so allowing children to be challenged and think critically outside of the regular school subjects during the school day is very valuable,” said Principal Elissa Milan. Students had the opportunity to choose one area of interest from variety of options, including the Debate Team, Chromebook Coding Creators, the Debate Team and Act it Out earlier in the year. Each group was
then led by a Harley Avenue educator that volunteered their knowledge of a specific area of expertise. During the 2nd Gear Fair, each group demonstrated what they learned for their peers. The afternoon was filled with applause and cheers as students proudly showed off their new skills, excited to pursue new hobbies both in and out of school.
A Bright Future Awaits Before the Harborfields High School Class of 2019 stepped foot onto the track to process to begin commencement exercises, family, loved ones, and friends were already cheering wildly for the soon-to-be graduates on sunny morning of June 22. Students entered the field proudly in their green and white caps and gowns, waving and smiling as the high school band played “Pomp and Circumstance.” To start off the ceremony, senior members of the high school choir performed “The Star Spangled Banner” and Harborfields alma mater. Superintenent of Schools Dr. Ianni then took the podium and congratulated both students and proud parents for making it to this point together, and offered words of encouragement for the future, drawing from the Roman Philospher Seneca. “There are likely more things that will scare us than will crush us,” said Dr. Ianni, “so let your hopes hold more weigth than your fears, and let every moment be a learning experience.” Salutatorian Katherine Paradise addressed her fellow graduates and expressed that it had been an honor to grow together from the days of Washington Drive to the day of graduation.
“Every student here contributed something unique to HF,” she said. “This class encompases such a wide varietyy of talents. Every one of us has something to be proud of, and a bright future to look forward to.” Valedictorian William Waring also commented on the high caliber of the class of 2019 and the unique and beautiful nature of being a part of the Harborfields family. When imparting last words of wisdom to his classmates, William encouraged them to always hold onto a sense of perspective. “Every day is precious, no matter how insignificant it seems,” he said, “so take risks, live life to the fullest, and focus on the people that really matter in your lives.” Class President Eric Warbitsky congratulated his fellow graduates, recalled fond district-wide memories, and commented that he would never forget what it was like to be a part of the Harborfields Family. Featured speaker Kerri McGinty English teacher, addressed the graduates and encouraged them to use their voice and face challenges head-on. “The more you use your voice, and the more you take on challenges, the more you
discover who you truly are.” Principal Timothy Russo congratulated the graduates, commending them for the incredible young men and women they’ve become. He reflected on the things he may have wanted to hear as a graduate, but ultimately settled on something he would have needed to hear. “Make sure you don’t speed through your life, and wish you could run every red light,” he encouraged them. “And instead, when you’re stuck at a standstill, take a moment to remember all the things that have brought you here, and make sure you’re still going in the direction you truly need to go.” Russo also presented each graduate with an evergreen tree, symbolizing the foundation and roots of their support system. “Let this be a reminder to you of HF and what you’ve meant to us,” he said. Then, each Class of 2019 graduate received their diploma from a member of the board of education. After moving their tassels from the right to left to commemorate their completion of high school, graduates tossed their caps into the air, officially marking them as Harborfields High School alumni.

Engineering Education David Storch. “With hands-on opportunities to learn about topics like matter and energy in organisms and ecosystems, stability and biodiversity, and interdependent relationships in ecosystems, students gain a deeper understanding of natural systems and can actively care for them.” In the first few months of use, the greenhouse was quickly bursting with experimentation and research. A few projects included students observing and testing nitrogen run-off, learning “square foot gardening” techniques, and growing geraniums from seed to bloom. Students were very proud of their work, and according to Greenhouse Coordinator Janet Byler,
were constantly asking to go back out into structure. “Having this greenhouse not only shows that we value giving our students first-hand experience,” said Ms. Byler, “but that we, as a community, value our local environment and want focus on solving real world problems and phenomena.” Members of the high school science department hope to integrate use of the greenhouse into the curriculum this upcoming year and in years to come, further aligning the district with the newly adopted NYS Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS). “We hope for it to become a focal point where kids can gather and see science in action, and not just from a text book,” said Ms. Byler.
The sixth graders of Northport Middle School were visited by an inspirational pair on June 10, John Cronin, of John’s Crazy Socks, and his father Mark Cronin. John, a young man with Down syndrome, and Mark created and run a successful online sock business that started with desire to inspire others and spread happiness. The father and son duo shared their inspirational story with the students, recounting the first stages of their business ideas, the desire to create something that would bring others happiness and obstacles they faced. “Not every idea is going to be a good one, so when something fails, you can’t just throw your hands up and quit,” said Mark. “We had to go through a lot of ups and downs to get to where we are today, but we
