Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta recognized Samuel David Isaac of Boy Scout Troop 125 for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at his recent Court of Honor held at the Commack United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Scout Project, Sam built three benches and put a fire pit in at the F-shelter campsite at the West Hills County Park in Melville. The fire pit
ensures a more contained and safer environment in which to have a campfire. His troop also uses this campsite for its annual Holiday in the Woods outing. Legislator Trotta presented Sam with a proclamation at the ceremony. “This is a very proud moment for Sam, his parents and family, as well as his troop leaders and fellow scouts. I extend
my congratulations to him for being an outstanding member of the community and hope that he will remain active in his community. His accomplishment has set a high standard for commitment and dedication, which I hope will inspire the youth of our great County of Suffolk,” said Legislator Robert Trotta.

Voucher users must agree to participate in the TNR (Trap/Neuter/ Return) program, whereby the cats are returned (if not tame) to the location where they were trapped; and then commit to feeding, and providing shelter for the cats. Tame cats enter Last Hope’s adoption program. Last Hope’s “FixA-Feral” program is geared to experienced cat caregivers as well as beginners who may only care for several cats. Last Hope also lends out humane “Have a Heart” traps and guides novice trappers. “Fix-AFeral” has subsidized the spaying and neutering of over 16,000 cats since it began 11 years ago. “In the past, we spent a lot of time planning fundraisers to support Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” initiative,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope. “We hold a luncheon, a raffle and rely on donations from a kind corporate sponsor to fund our vouchers, but the number of feral cats on Long Island is immense. The requests for help are increasing. We’d begin issuing program vouchers in March to coincide with kitten season, and often run out of funds by midNovember. We simply did not have enough money to keep discounts available all year. It is heartbreaking not to be able to assist every caller pleading for help, or every feral or cat colony on Last Hope’s radar. Just this week, we received a call from a 95 year old man who had a mother cat nursing kittens in his shed.” The generous grant

With Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” program, fewer kittens will be born into feral colonies; thus, reducing the number of cats roaming Long Island streets and/or ending up in shelters. Being Pool Smart South Huntington School District secondgrader Jeremiah Person Gunter was recently honored by Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro at Oakwood Primary Center as the local winner of this year’s “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Established in 2007, the annual competition invites elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety and prevent accidental
Students from Harborfields High School’s Global Justice club presented a check in the amount of $6,500 to the Magic Penny, an organization founded by former Harborfields High School music teacher Lucy Sumner. The Magic Penny provides financial support for educational programs in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Members of the Global Justice club raised money through their annual
concert held in late March. In addition, HHS senior and club member Iman Lee donated money to the cause, as a result of her being recognized with the Violet Richardson Award. This award honors young women who make a difference in their communities through volunteer service. For this, Iman received $500 to go toward a charity of her choice; she decided to donate it as part of the school’s contribution to
drowning by creating a poster that illustrates one or more safety tips. Each contest participant received a Certificate of Distinguished Achievement and Jeremiah, a Huntington Station resident whose entry was selected as the overall local winner, was awarded a special Suffolk County Proclamation from Legislator D’Amaro. He was joined by some of his fellow students
and teachers at the presentation ceremony. “Once again, the ‘Be Pool Smart’ poster contest drew many wonderful entries, but Jeremiah’s stood out because of its creativity,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “I am pleased to recognize Jeremiah for his winning entry and thank all of the contest participants for helping to spread the important message of pool safety.”

Some of the aviary species that call this barrier island home include seagulls, piping plovers and ospreys. Fire Island has an overwhelming number of insects. Pound for pound, insects make up the most populous genre of life on Fire Island. Mosquitos, ticks, spiders and beetles are literally everywhere you look. Some claim that this abundance is a bad thing, but they are wrong. Insects are the backbone to a healthy ecosystem. Insects are the most crucial part of Fire Island’s environment. Deer are arguably Fire Island’s most shining feature. These fourlegged gentle giants
scare day-trippers and amaze residents. Their playful antics and distinct personalities make deer a Fire Island staple. Foxes are becoming more and more plentiful on our little island. Rummaging through garbage pails or stealthily walking the beach, these little creatures are truly wondrous. Watching these animals from your bedroom window truly gives you an understanding of what it is like to survive. Following the notorious Hurricane Sandy, our island was decimated. Now, Fire Island and its inhabitants are quickly regaining their strength. These animals will remain part of the Fire Island landscape for years to come, for us to enjoy, our kids to enjoy and their kids to enjoy.

The ecosystem on Fire Island is as diverse as it is complex. Everything, from the smallest tick to the largest shark, can be found on the Fire Island National Seashore. In my six years of living on Fire Island, I have seen whales, sharks, dolphins and many other aquatic creatures. The whale sightings are very rare, but dolphins can be seen almost everyday. Sharks wash up on the beach occasionally, but you never see their dorsal fins popping up out of the water as in many popular movies. Just the other day on my way to work, I saw a small, dried shark on the sand getting pecked at by seagulls. Types of marine life aren’t the only animals making a presence on Fire Island. Birds, insects and

Park Dedication Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Town Council Members Susan A. Berland, Eugene Cook and Tracey A. Edwards joined community members June 20th in dedicating Coral Park, a long-awaited neighborhood park that was recently completed. “This is a classic neighborhood park,” Supervisor Petrone said during the brief ceremony. “It’s walkable. People come in and out of it – people who live in the community and the neighborhood. It’s not just a park for the sake of having a park. It’s a park that is an integral part of everyone’s quality of life and everyone’s daily living. So that’s what makes us happy. That’s what it’s all about.” Designed by Town staff, the 2.8-acre park has a playground, a basketball court, a pavilion and game tables and is an innovative, fitness-themed park. The playground is appropriate for both toddlers and youth and contains play zones that help develop upper body strength instead of the typical platforms and slides. An adult fitness area includes six fitness/cardio adult exercise play stations and a halfmile jogging path. For the less active, the pavilion/sitting area has picnic tables, a shade shelter and stone tables and chairs for playing chess, checkers and dominoes. The park includes a large open lawn area appropriate for a range of activities, from pickup ball games to kite

In fact, a Town Board resolution allocating funding from the Town’s Environmental Open Space and Park Improvement Fund (EOSPA) required community input
as part of the planning process. “We had numerous community meetings. We had battles back and forth, what should be there, what shouldn’t be there. Everyone came together. Everybody finally agreed it wasn’t about what it shouldn’t be, it was about what it should be. And this is a perfect example of how if we all work together, we can get something amazing done,” Councilwoman Berland said. “The Town Board fought hard for this park because we knew the community wanted this park, the community needed it.” The total cost of the park was $855,000 - $20,000 under budget - with $570,000 from the EOSPA Fund and $285,000 from the Neighborhood Parks Fund, which contains money contributed by developers as part of their approval process. “I am so proud of this park,” Councilman Cook said. “People are always using it, and that’s the way it should be.” Councilwoman Edwards, who recently joined the Town Board but who noted she used to live in the area, was already looking ahead to what she called Phase 2: possible additional amenities and traffic calming measures. “I am really glad that I can be part of Phase 2 of this park,” she said, “to ensure that this is not only a beautiful park, but the safest park possible.”

Alzheimer’s Regatta On June 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. sponsored by Sagamore Yacht Club and Oakcliff Sailing Center, hosted its Second Annual Alzheimer’s Regatta and Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club in Oyster Bay. The regatta raised over $23,000, which will benefit Alzheimer’s Disease research and support.
The highest fundraising team in the fundraising category was “Paddlers for Poker” with team captain Jean Fassino. The team raised a total of $745. The first-place winner of this year’s Regatta Sailing Race was “Rift” captained by Bill Maher. In second place was Captain Darrin Martin’s “Commanche,” followed by “Serendiptity,” which was helmed by Bob Betensky.
Dawn Riley, Executive Director, Oakcliff Sailing Center, and Board Member, US Sailing, was in attendance. Ms. Riley was the 2002 IC45 and 2007 K-Challenge America’s Cup World Champion. As CEO and Captain of America True, she was the first woman to manage an America’s Cup sailing team. Along with the race there was a Paddling
for Poker event where participants paddled to five boats; at each boat, they received a card and once they received five cards, they then made their best poker hand. The highest poker hand received an award at the dinner for their achievement. This year, The Alzheimer’s Regatta had a special treat for those who wanted to watch the Regatta and Paddling
for Poker: a guided tour of historic Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor aboard the Christeen, a 40-foot Gaff Rigged Sloop that was built in 1883 and completely restored in 1999. She is the oldest Oyster Sloop in America and is a National Historic Landmark. The awards ceremony was accompanied by dinner, dessert and live entertainment by The Old
