completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.” My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought. As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but

Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,

subways? Subways require a special skillset. So many letters and numbers and crisscrossing routes. So much congestion. Almost zero chance to sit, or even lean against, a stationary object. Misery. Pure misery. And so the trek began, from one line (an “express” that made about 12 stops) to another, crammed in like sardines. Oh, the joys of commuting during rush hour. Let’s cross that one off the bucket list. {For those inquiring readers wishing to know the status of Buddy, my betta fish, I am happy to report that he recently celebrated his four-month birthday and is still swimming maniacal laps around his bowl.}

Students in Patricia Taylor’s AP government class at Harborfields High School hosted a Veterans’ Appreciation Breakfast, welcoming veterans from the Northport and Greenlawn American Legion and the local VFW Post in Huntington Station.

More than 100 students were involved in coordinating the breakfast, which included a variety of musical performances. Additionally, the students created a video montage of their peers and faculty thanking the veterans for their service. During the event, students had the

opportunity to engage in conversation with the veterans as they shared their experiences serving the United States. “What better way to teach the students about civic duty than to have it come from these primary resources in our community,” said Taylor.

More than 360,000 homes in Suffolk County are not sewered; the unmaintained and outdated septic systems and cesspools on these properties are contributing to nearly 70% of nitrogen pollution in the region’s waterways, including the Great South Bay. The excess nitrogen has caused harmful algal blooms, beach closures, destroyed the oncerenowned shell fishing industry and threatened the region’s ground, surface and drinking water supply. Suffolk County was particularly recognized for the launch of its Single Family Homeowner Septic Demonstration Pilot Program in 2014 where the county selected 19 homeowners through a lottery system to receive advanced onsite wastewater treatment systems with nitrogen removal capabilities at no cost to the homeowner. The systems include free installation, monitoring and maintenance for five years. The County will use these piloted systems to effectively test and provisionally approve systems to be used in additional homes throughout Suffolk County. Reclaim Our Water was recognized by NACo under the association’s “County Resiliency: Infrastructure, Energy and Sustainability” category as the septic demonstration program met the following criteria: offers new services to county residents by allowing additional wastewater technologies to be installed, upgrades the level of training for county employees, enhances the level of citizen participation in governmental programs, provides information

Ninety-nine Oldfield Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade students were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society, celebrating their academic and extracurricular achievements during the annual candle-lighting induction ceremony on June 10th. During the ceremony, members of the society’s board explained the high standards of leadership, service, citizenship character and scholarship candidates must meet to be inducted into the society and light a candle to represent each standard. To be eligible for membership consideration, students must possess these characteristics as well as have a cumulative average of at least 92 percent. The newly inducted members joined the current 124 eighth-grade members of the NJHS. As president and vice president of the society, Christina Amari and Katherine Sheridan read the names of new inductees and each student wrote his/her name in the society’s official membership book and received a carnation. Along with friends and family present at ceremony, co-advisors of the NJHS Jennifer Garside and Kathryn Scott congratulated the students for this special achievement.

To kick off the presentation, members of the Cub Scouts Pack 471 presented the American flag as students and faculty recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Led by Tim Kenyon, the fifth-grade band performed the “Star Spangled Banner” arranged by Francis Scott Key. Following student speeches about what the flag represents, members

of Girl Scout Troop 282 performed and narrated a flag folding ceremony and presented the flag to Vietnam War Veteran and guest speaker Dominick A. Papaleo. “The flag represents my loyalty to my country, my faith in the freedoms I enjoy and the opportunities we have as American citizens,” said Papaleo. “You should always consider how fortunate you are to be American citizens, enjoying freedoms that are rare or non-existent in so many other parts of the world.” Under the direction

of music teacher Linda Halber Romano, teacher Linda Scotto, and orchestra teacher Diana GotzenBerg, string studentmusicians and members of the third-, fourth- and fifth-grade select chorus performed patriotic songs, as the audience was welcomed to sing along.
