Historic Marker
gained much attention by growing record numbers of cucumbers and cabbages. He earned the nickname of the “Pickle King” as a result of growing and processing 1.5 million pickles in one season. Moving beyond tenant farming, Mr. Ballton was able to gain capital while serving as buying agent for a large Boston pickle house. He began to buy land and houses near the new railroad line, which got him on the path toward being a successful landowner, entrepreneur and founding member of the Greenlawn community. He died on April 30th, 1917 at the age of 79. In their remarks, Supervisor Petrone and Councilman Cuthbertson noted that as part of Mr. Ballton’s legacy, the community has a park (near the Harborfields Public Library) called Pickle Park and annually, the local historical association hosts a pickle festival. Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Town Council Members Mark Cuthbertson, Susan A. Berland and Tracey A. Edwards joined with the Town’s African American Historic Designation Council June 18th in dedicating two historic markers highlighting the contributions of Samuel Ballton, the 19th-century escaped slave who rose to become Greenlawn’s Pickle King. The markers, in the municipal parking lot between Broadway and Gaines Avenue and at the intersection of Taylor and Boulevard Avenues, note several houses Ballton built near each location. Samuel Ballton was born into slavery in Virginia. He escaped the South during the Civil War and eventually settled in Greenlawn in 1873, where he started as a tenant farmer for one of the Town’s wealthiest landowners. Later, while employed as a shareholder for the owner of the largest farm in Greenlawn, he

Honored for Service During its business meeting on June 16th, the Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education and administration recognized 10 administrators, staff and faculty members retiring at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. District and building administrators afforded words of gratitude to the honorees and presented them with a plaque to acknowledge their retirement and years of service to the district. This year’s retiring staff and faculty members

Outstanding Volunteers
The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), has awarded 2016 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarships to Walt Whitman High School seniors Robert Eng of Huntington Station, NY and Julianna Rose Pasquarello of Melville, NY. At a ceremony at Walt Whitman High School on May 28th, Robert and Julianna each received a certificate as well as a check for $1,500 for their volunteer service in their community from FASNY President Robert N. McConville. Robert will graduate from Walt Whitman High School and attend Becker College this fall. He is currently involved with the
Huntington Manor Fire Department Explorer Post 1650. Julianna will also graduate from Walt Whitman High School and attend Tulane University. Although she will be entering with an undecided major this fall, Julianna is interested in pursuing a career in the Public Service industry. She is also a current member of the Junior Explorers at the Melville Volunteer Fire Department, in tandem with other members of her family. “I joined the [Melville Volunteer] Fire Department after being inspired by my dad’s passion for fire service,” said Pasquarello. “I wanted to make an impact and do
what I love just the way he does.” Julianna’s father has been a firefighter for over 20 years and her sister is also a Junior Explorer at the Melville Volunteer Fire Department. Robert and Julianna were two of 15 students chosen for this scholarship out of a total of 115 applicants. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention and other projects, 4-H, etc. Additional criteria are demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.
Earthkeepers Camp Once again, Starflower Experiences will be offering Earthkeepers as a summer camp at Manor Farm in Huntington, from July 5th through July 8th. Ten and eleven year-olds will visit Mama Nature’s Munch Room, meet a “Spec,” dig up a buried time capsule and earn four keys to help them live in harmony with the earth and understand how the systems of life on earth operate. The keys open real locks on boxes containing secrets only Earthkeepers know. If you like being outdoors and care about his planet, then you should become an Earthkeeper! This incredibly dynamic, fun program helps young people learn about and
care for the earth. This initial week of Earthkeepers will be followed by a week of Earth Explorers, open only to those youngsters registering for Earthkeepers, Earthkeepers from past years, and students who have participated in the Rangers of the Earth program. During this week, participants will have a chance to really explore additional places and look more closely at how to live more in harmony with the earth. Starflower Experiences is a not-for-profit educational organization with a reputation for conducting exciting participatory environmental experiences
for many local schools. The Earthkeepers program was developed by The Institute for Earth Education and is currently being run at sites across the U.S., Canada, Britain, Australia, Japan, Cyprus, China and the Czech Republic. In conjunction with the National Week of Making, students in kindergarten through eighth grade in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in an afternoon of discovery, creativity and fun as they attended the district’s Maker Faire on June 15th. Faculty and staff members volunteered to lead workshops where students and their parents practiced basic physics, math and engineering principles. Each workshop allowed students to engage in age-appropriate interactive activities and challenges that put to the test their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The district’s youngest students attended workshops including “What Floats Your Boat,” where they designed and raced sailboats; “Ozobots,”

All the students were also able to spend time in a general MakerSpace environment to explore,
discover and tinker at different stations with magnets, paper airplanes, pipe cleaners and more. The well-attended event hosted more than 150 Elwood students and their parents. The district, the respective PTAs at Harley Avenue Primary, James H. Boyd Intermediate and Elwood Middle School, the Elwood Teachers Alliance, the Elwood Council of Administrators, the Elwood Education Endowment, the Elwood Booster Club, and the Elwood Public Library collectively sponsored the event. The district extends its thank you to all the volunteers and participants for helping to make the event such a success.

HACEF’s mission is to enhance the educational opportunities for the children in Harborfields community in creative and exciting ways. By offering opportunities to learn a new skill, invest in a natural talent or by offering new and innovative technology, the organization strives to help provide the Harborfields children with various resources so they can best reach their full
potential. Since its inception in 2003, HACEF has funded more than $115,000 in grants and nearly $54,000 in scholarships. In the 2015-2016 school year, the organization funded more than $20,000. Other recent grants they have supported include pit orchestra lights at HHS, 32 pedometers for the physical education department at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, iPads for ENL students at HHS and a color printer for the special education department at TJL. All funds raised by HACEF are a direct result of fundraising efforts as well as HACEF’s summer camp program which, for the coming 2016 season, enrolls more than 540 students in the district.

During its regular business meeting on June 15th, the Harborfields Central School District Board of Education accepted a check in the amount of $11,525.19 from the Harborfields Alumni and Community Educational Foundation to help fund three grants that will provide enhanced learning opportunities for students in the district. HACEF trustees voted to fund the addition of 30 online lab notebooks for the science department at Harborfields High School, a Chromebook Touch for students with disabilities in the PALS program at Washington Drive Primary School and a Delta Drill Press for students to utilize in the Robotics/STEM program at Oldfield Middle
