Honoring America’s Flag
Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School students and faculty members gathered for two assemblies on June 14th, to honor Flag Day. The ceremonies unfolded in the school’s cafetorium, where classes dressed in patriotic fashion. Local veterans from the American Legion were invited to the event and sat front row as the celebration took place. Boy Scouts
opened the ceremony by leading the flag down to the stage followed by Principal Marguerite Greene and students waving American Flags. Together, they all recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Several fifth-graders approached the podium and read either a poem or essay on what the American flag means to them. Ms. Greene shared her favorite patriotic poem

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

In recognition of this achievement, Legislator D’Amaro presented Ms. Henneborn with a Proclamation and again presented Ms. Raji with a Proclamation for display in the school. The winning video “Lillie the Hamster” was shown at the meeting following the presentation. “Despite the warnings, stimulant drinks remain popular beverages, particularly among young
people,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “Some can contain up to 800 milligrams of caffeine, the equivalent of eight cups of coffee, as well as many other additional ingredients which may cause harmful side effects when consumed in high quantities or combinations.” These adverse health impacts may include: insomnia, headaches, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irritability and rapid heartbeat. “Ms. Henneborn created an engaging video demonstrating the harmful effects of energy drink consumption,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “Her humorous take on the potential impacts of energy drinks will resonate with her peers and hopefully make them stop and think before they reach for an energy drink.”

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and the Town Board spotlighted the importance of bone marrow donations at the June 13th board meeting, issuing proclamations to an organization that operates the world’s largest registry of potential bone marrow donors and to two youths who were donors for their siblings. Be The Match, a nonprofit group operated by the National Marrow Donor Program, is dedicated to helping patients in need of a life-saving marrow or cord blood transplant. In a blood marrow transplant, a donor’s healthy blood-forming cells are transplanted into a patient’s bloodstream, where they begin to grow and make healthy red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The organization
operates the national Be The Match Registry, which matches patients with their marrow donor, educates health care professionals and conducts research to help people with life-threatening blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and aplastic anemia. It is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program; the research is spearheaded by program’s Center for International Blood and Transplant Research. Following presentation of the proclamation to Be the Match representative Jacqueline Poarch, Supervisor Petrone called up “two special young people who take community and family very seriously. They have been heroes, they are heroes and they are donors.” Aidan Cuthbertson recently provided bone
marrow to his older brother, Hunter, who was suffering from aplastic anemia, a rare and serious condition that occurs when the body stops producing enough new blood cells. Aidan and Hunter’s father is Councilman Mark Cuthbertson. Alex Briggs provided bone marrow for his older sister, Emily, who suffered from aplastic anemia when she received her transplant four years ago. Emily accompanied her brother to the presentation. The proclamations noted, “By recognizing these heroic acts of kindness and courageousness, we acknowledge the need for all citizens to become aware of the importance of donating blood cells and bone marrow to those in need, helping to make our world a kinder and healthier place to live.”

Danielle Henneborn, a student at Walt Whitman High School in the South Huntington School District, and her Animation and Video Teacher Erica Raji were recently honored by Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro as the 2017 winners of the Suffolk County “Truth about Stimulant Drinks” video contest. The presentation took place at the Suffolk County Legislature’s General Session on Tuesday, June 6th in Hauppauge. In conjunction with a public awareness campaign, the County Legislature annually asks high school students to create a 30 second public service announcement (PSA) video incorporating their interpretation of the negative health effects associated with consuming stimulant drinks. Marker Unveiled
Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone helped unveil a historic marker June 17th commemorating the “Hullabaloo in Halesite,” the beaching of a 63-foot whale in 1946 that closed schools and attracted the curious from miles around. The educational marker was erected in the Town’s Halesite Park, not far from where the black whale beached on October 21st, 1946. According to news articles at the time, the whale was such a sensation that schools across Suffolk County, and even some from Nassau County, closed school for the day and ran buses to the scene
so students could take look, according to news articles at the time. It was an event etched indelibly in the memories of those who saw the whale, including Huntington Station resident Anthony Mastrioanni, a Huntington High School junior at the time. His reminiscences in discussions with Brian Hansen, curator of the Huntington School Heritage Museum, provided the impetus for the marker. They enlisted Nomi Dayan, director of the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum, for additional educational details, as well as Town Historian Robert Hughes.
The marker was privately funded, with a major donation coming from the Forte family, some of whom attended the unveiling. The marker includes a poem, “Huntington’s Whale Tale,” written Tony Forte, father of two of the attending Fortes. During a brief ceremony, Supervisor Petrone thanked all of those involved in the effort before turning the program over to Mastrioanni, who asked those assembled to share their recollections before he gave his. The marker is in the park at 1 New York Avenue, behind the Halesite Firehouse.

Bottle Recycling
Janna Zilkha, 15, of Dix Hills, has dedicated countless hours to making a positive impact on the environment and her community. Since her Bat Mitzvah in 2013, where she took on the Mitzvah of supporting Ariella’s NY Friendship Circle of Suffolk County through funds collected by recycling bottles, Zilkha has donated more than $800 on their behalf. The Friendship Circle, based at The Chai Center in Dix Hills, is an organization which unites teen volunteers and children with special needs in a wide range of social and educational innovative programs and activities for hours of fun and friendship. Funds
raised by Zilkha helped to support Friendship Circle programs such as Teen Scene, Zumba, Puppy Fun, Bowling Buddies, hip hop classes and more. This year, Zilkha joined forces with The Chai Center Noskin Hebrew School and created a recycling program that challenged the students, from kindergarten through 7th grade, to bring in as many bottles as they could. From September through May, Zilkha came weekly to pick up the bottles. At the end of the school year, she was able to collect more than 10,000 bottles and presented a check for $500 to The Friendship Circle. Janna’s hard work then inspired another person to match that donation with
an additional $500 gifted to The Friendship Circle. Zilkha, who spent innumerable hours standing at the recycling machine, even as much as three hours at a time, says, “When I started this recycling program four years ago, I had no idea that it would get this big. It’s amazing how our community has come together and gone out of their way to donate their recycling to the Chai Center’s Friendship Circle. I am so grateful for the community’s support, and look forward to even more recycling in the coming school year.” “We are so thankful for Janna’s efforts on behalf of The Friendship Circle,” said Musia Laufer, Director. “We depend on the generosity of others to fund our programs, and we are in awe of how Janna, a teen herself, has been able to raise these funds to help us continue our efforts on behalf of special needs children.” Janna’s mom, Naomi Zilkha, adds, “Janna is very dedicated to this project. It’s always incredible to see the positive impact that teens can have on a community - encouraging recycling and supporting the kids who benefit from participating in The Friendship Circle.”

Harborfields High School seniors Casandra Moisanu and Mia Santomauro were recently named National Merit Scholarship winners in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program based on their academic accomplishments. The students were among 7,500 scholarship winners chosen from 1.6 million entrants to receive
a National Merit $2,500 Scholarship to use at any accredited college or university in the United States. Both students were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who examined their academic records, including difficulty level of subjects studied
and grades earned. The committee also reviewed an essay written by each student, scores from two standardized tests, student contributions and leadership in school and community activities and a letter of recommendation written by a high school official.

Honoring Seniors Harborfields High School seniors were recently recognized for their outstanding achievements, citizenship and service at the school’s annual senior awards ceremony. In addition, more than 20 memorial and organizational scholarships were presented to deserving seniors. Casandra Moisanu
and Ishaan Lohia were announced as the Class of 2017 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Principal Timothy Russo commended the seniors for their academic dedication and contributions to the school community. Russo also announced the eight other outstanding students who make up the top 10 students in the graduating class.
The following are the top 10 students in the graduating Class of 2017: Casandra Moisanu, Ishaan Lohia, Greta Browne, Sarah Murphy, Mia Santomauro, Alexander Martin, Falyn Dwyer, Olivia Madigan, Jacob Chalif and Donovan Snyder. Their names were added to the Wall of Scholars, which is affixed in the hallway of the high school.
Taking the Next Step The Huntington Town board, at its June 13th meeting, took the next step toward replacing the aging Town Animal Shelter. The Board authorized hiring L. K. McLean Associates of Brookhaven to provide the architectural and engineering services to design the new shelter, which will be located on Creek Road in Huntington Village, adjacent to both Mill Dam Park and the Town’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. The cost of the contract is not to exceed $567,540. The McLean firm was one of 13 that responded to a request for proposals issued last year, and one of three asked to make in-person presentations before a selection team last December. The McLean entry scored the highest of the three. In particular, the selection team was impressed by McLean’s sub-consultants, Jackson & Ryan of Houston, TX, and Designed Learned of Norwich, CT. Both firms have extensive experience in the design and construction of animal shelters and are recognized for the quality of their work in this field. The three companies have also worked together successfully on previous municipal projects. The new shelter will replace the existing facility on Deposit Road in East
Northport with one that will be state of the art and more centrally located. In other action, the Town Board: approved the rezoning of a parcel on West Hills Road, south of Jericho Turnpike in South Huntington, from R-7 residence district R-HS residential health services district to allow construction of a proposed 90-unit, 136-bed assisted living facility authorized an agreement with the Harborfields school district to install solarpowered permanent driver feedback signs on Taylor Avenue in Greenlawn, near the entrance to Harborfields High School, to improve traffic and pedestrian safety. The school district will reimburse the Town for the $16,000 cost of the signs. - amended the contract with the law firm Leventhal Mullaney & Blinkoff, the counsel to the Town’s Ethics Board, to represent the Town is a court action filed against the Ethics Board. The additional cost will not exceed $15,000. - authorized the sale to the Long Island Rail Road of materials used to repair the stairs leading from the eastern overpass at the Huntington station. The Town had obtained the materials before the LIRR assumed responsibility for the repair.

This proposal would provide more places where residents can bring their dogs and make the Town’s policy consistent with Suffolk County’s. - scheduled a July 11th public hearing to increase from two to four the number of rooms permitted in a bed-andbreakfast, from seven to 29 the number of consecutive days a guest may stay and from 30 to 120 the total number of days an individual guest may stay in a one-year period.

Third-graders in Stacey Reedy’s class at Pulaski Road Elementary School created their own rainforest on June 13th to showcase their projects on protecting the animals who inhabit it. For about two and a half months, the students learned about the rainforest and researched
a specific animal that lives there. They created a poster board and shoebox diorama with their findings. As part of a culminating activity, the class transformed their classroom into a rainforest, shutting the lights and hanging paper leaves and branches around the room. Each student had their own station where they set
up their projects for faculty members and their peers to see. Dressed like animal experts, students shared their research on their animal’s habitat, diet, life cycle and behavior. They also discussed interesting facts and encouraged viewers to ask questions.

The school recited the Pledge of Allegiance, fifthgraders Gio Faust and Aliya Zadrozny joined Ms. Essenfeld at the podium dressed as Uncle Sam and Betsy Ross and thirdgraders showed off their homemade red, white and blue hats that they created for the occasion. The program consisted of several special elements including performances
from band and orchestra students, patriotic songs performed by each grade level, a recipe of the flag demonstration and a white table of remembrance ceremony. In addition, a number of fifth-graders shared their writing on what Flag Day means to them and Ms. Essenfeld shared the names of those in the Dickinson Avenue community who currently serve and have served in the armed forces. She thanked them for their dedication and sacrifice.

Recognition and accolades abounded in the Northport-East Northport School District as the Board of Education recognized its outstanding students, administrators, faculty and fellow board members during its June 15th meeting. Kicking off the recognitions, Superintendent of Schools Mr. Robert Banzer and members of the board acknowledged the hard work, dedication and sportsmanship of the high school’s inaugural Unified Basketball Team. Led by the boys varsity basketball coach Andrew D’Eloia, the Northport High School Unified Basketball team consists of special needs students collaborating with general education students as one team and participate in basketball games against other schools. “This has been the most rewarding experience of my coaching career,” said D’Eloia. “Students with special needs can teach all of us far more than we could ever learn. Their passion for the game, energy and effort is the
standard I am going to hold the varsity team to.” The evening proceeded with Northport High School Social Studies teacher David Scott receiving the 2017 Excellence in Civics Education Award from the Federal Bar Association for his dedication in teaching civics education. Additionally, the high school was named a 2017-18 Reward School by the State of New York Education Department. The SED identifies Reward Schools as those ranking among the top 20 percent in English language arts and mathematics assessment performance, having a graduation rate above 80 percent and obtaining the most progress and/or highest achievement in the state without significant gaps in student achievement. Following, Mr. Banzer and members of the board acknowledged six teachers for their achievements in their respective field of teaching with the Professional Achievement Awards. Acknowledging their
years of service on the board, trustees Regina Pisacani and Jennifer Thompson were recognized for their devotion, effort and time with the district. “On behalf of the entire board, we appreciate and thank you for your service, dedication and time that you both have given to this community,” said Board of Education President Andrew Rapiejko. “You both are irreplaceable and will be missed.” Concluding the ceremony, retirees of the district were recognized for their years of dedication, support and guidance to the students of the district. “Thank you for 471 collective years of experience teaching our students and collaborating with our staff,” said Mr. Rapiejko. “We wish you a lifetime of happiness during your retirement.” In addition, three teachers, Erin Harrison from Dickinson Avenue Elementary School, Amy Lang from Ocean Avenue Elementary School and Northport High School English teacher Kerri Tordi received tenure.
New Blades Students of Western Suffolk BOCES recently built four new blades as part of their studies for the Beautification Windmill on Route 109 in West Babylon. The old blades were there for over 20 years and needed replacement.

Marine Experts Second-graders at Washington Drive Primary School recently showed off their marine knowledge during four days of their Seashore Museum. Classes were assigned select days to set up their projects in the school’s cafetorium to present their research on
specific sea creatures. Family members were invited to the event and had the opportunity to walk around and ask questions about the projects. Students were encouraged to showcase their creativity as many shared posters, shoebox
dioramas and drawings to those in attendance. In addition, each student wore a hat that they created to let others know what sea creature they studied and eagerly shared what they learned about their animal.

Tech Competition Set The 2017 Spellman High Voltage Electronics Clean Tech Competition will be held at Stony Brook University, 100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook at the Center for Leadership and Development & Service (LDS building) on Friday, July 14th. The theme of this year’s Competition is “Creating a Greener Future” and students will compete for over $20,000 in prize money. The final round of the Competition will take place between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Students from 10 will have 15 minutes to explain the problem they identified, present their solution for mitigating the problem’s negative impacts. Winners will be named between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. This inspiring and important competition is free and open to the public and students, parents, teachers, members of the business community and groups are all welcome to attend. The Competition is managed by the Center for Science Teaching and Learning a not-forprofit organization with a mission of encouraging science learning and literacy.
