Sprinting to Success are also judged on design, creativity and ingenuity of the student teams. In addition to working with Investigate facilitators Fran Bertos and Brianne Furstein, and technology teacher and department advisor Mr. George Searing, Northport High School Technology Honor Society students served as mentors for to these students. During the competition, at which they were the youngest competitors, students were judged on their car’s time, as well as their engineering notebooks, in which they kept detailed notes and drawings of the entire engineering and design process. The winners include the following:

Green & White & Golden Memories As I write these words, the Class of 2018 prepares to march onto the old Kienle Field at Lindenhurst Middle School to the familiar strains of Pomp & Circumstance. In just a few short hours, they will embark on the next chapter of their lives, as proud alumni of Lindy High, the last dozen or so years of schooling an already-fading memory. I remember it like it was yesterday. June 25th, 2000, a Saturday morning. Hundreds of folding chairs lined the old grass field, as our parents and loved ones perched on the wooden bleachers excitedly waiting for the ceremony to begin. Behind the scenes, in the locker room of the gymnasium, I paced nervously in my cap and gown, binder in hand, silently running through the words of my valedictory address. As my guidance counselor passed by, she glanced my way. “Do you need a piece of gum Jamie? You look a little green.” And green I was, as I stood on the stage a few moments later, listening to our principal introduce me as the student

whose dream job it was to become a clubhouse reporter for the New York Yankees. Big dreams indeed for a girl who had never held a job outside of a part-time assistant teaching gig at her local dance studio. But that’s what high school was for, to cultivate those lofty goals and give birth to the endless possibilities borne from a college education and our eventual entrance into the great workforce. I often wonder how many of us wound up doing anything comparable to that which we aspired to on that particular day, some 18 years ago. How many ever truly know what they want to be when they grow up? Perhaps we’re not supposed to. Much has changed in the nearly two decades that have elapsed as we spread our wings and went our respective separate ways in the search for a lifetime of fulfillment. For some, college called, degrees were earned and positions accepted at prestigious corporations. For others, the path evolved a bit differently, perhaps in settling down to start

a family and build a home, or to explore other creative outlets and passions en route to a less traditional existence. To each his or her own, as they say. Ten years later, at our first reunion gathering, we reconvened as a class, a bit older and a tad wiser; overall, though, not much seemed to have changed. Looking across the bar at the old familiar faces, it was as if no time had passed. In the blink of an eye, we were back on that field, decked out in our Bulldog green and white, the world at our fingertips. In just two short years, we will likely gather once again, this time at our 20th reunion. How will the stories have evolved? What new tales will we have to share? Will the past still seem as easily within reach as it once was? I have a feeling it will. As they say in my district ~ Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog ~ and it’s true. To the graduating Class of 2018 . . . may your memories be just as fond 18 years from now as they are today. Mine certainly are.

Fourth-grade students from Northport-East Northport’s Investigate program recently competed in and were named winners in multiple categories at the Cradle of Aviation’s Junior Solar Spring Competition. These fourth-grade students are a part of the districtwide program that works on enforcing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills in those who show an aptitude for them. The Junior Solar Sprint is a model car competition that incorporates the use of renewable energy into the design of the cars. Students build and design a solar car and then compete against other teams in a series of time trials. Cars

Family, friends and fellow scouts came together to celebrate Douglas Clark’s accomplishment of becoming an Eagle Scout. Having earned more than the required number of badges, Douglas completed his Eagle Scout project by building and installing four

cedar benches at Dickinson Avenue Elementary School in East Northport. Douglas, his brother and mother all graduated from this school. Recalling that as a student he once had a broken ankle and there were no benches to sit on during recess, he

thought he would remedy the situation for other students. Douglas spent 238.5 hours in meetings, planning, fundraising, building and installing the benches for his project. Eagle Scout is the highest rank a scout can achieve and Douglas started as a tiger scout in the first grade and became and Eagle before he turned 18. “This is a tremendous accomplishment for a young person and it is a recognition that you will have for the rest of your life,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta. “Having been with the Suffolk County Police Department for 25 years and served on the FBI”s Long Island Gang Task Force, I am very proud of your desire to have a career in law enforcement like many of your family members. You will be an asset to this profession,” added Legislator Trotta.

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

Recently, students from Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District who participated in the nationwide Science Olympiad received high scores in their competing categories. This contest is

an annual science trivia competition that middle schools participate in across the country. As a group, the participating sixth-grade students placed third overall nationally. Student Matthew Prieto placed first

overall individually in the nation, and Guantian Tao placed first in the category of Earth Science. Tied for second place in Earth Science was Alison Ryan, Chris Costa and Jacob Siegel.

Teamwork and Brainpower Students had some end of year fun while putting their brains to work on Math, Science, and Technology (MST) Day at Ocean Avenue Elementary on June 12th. Throughout the day, each grade level was broken into teams to work together and tackle a STEM-related challenge. For each challenge, students had to use provided recycled materials and immense brainpower to accomplish

a common goal. Activities included constructing the tallest tower, building rollercoasters for marble “vehicles,” and an egg drop without cracking the shell. During the fifth-grade session, where students attempted to build the tallest free-standing tower with only newspapers and masking tape, it was apparent that each group had different a tactic to achieve success. Some

spent more time folding the papers and carefully placing them on top of each other, while others just crumpled, rolled, and wrapped the newspapers in tape at the speed of light. “We knew that the base is the most important part,” said Hallie, whose tower was taller than any member of her group. “So we made sure to enforce that first, and went from there.”

Revolution Comes to Life research. Once each child was assigned one figure, they rigorously began researching and creating a slide presentation encompassing as much of their figure as possible. In addition to the interactive report, each student prepared a one to two minute in-character speech for “museum-goers”, made up of teachers, other grade

levels and loved ones. Students enjoyed learning about historical figures in depth in a fun, new way. “I chose Lydia Darragh because she was such a brave woman,” said fourthgrader Emma. “She risked her life to become a Patriot spy.”

Claiborne, Dan O’Connor, Thomas Fodor and Sean Ryan, captured first place for the second time this year. Individually, Elijah Claiborne was named NYS Champion in both the 800m and 1600m runs. Cumulatively, these outstanding wins contributed to the boys

track team placing first overall in New York State with 28 points. In addition to this tremendous success, Sydney Rohme, a member of the girls track and field team, placed sixth in New York State.

Alexa Helburn, a sophomore at Huntington High School and an aspiring young local artist, just had her first photography show at Cold Spring Harbor Library on Wednesday, June 13th. There were approximately 35 people in attendance and Alexa’s photography, featuring images taken locally of our environment, raised $195. The money raised will be used to help fund a Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society project started by James Ricci, a 7th grader at Oldfield Middle School. The project involves creating fishing line receptacles along the North Shore waterways to help prevent wildlife from getting caught in unused fishing line. Fifteen year-old Alexa Helburn is relatively new to the Huntington area having moved here from Westchester County last year. Alexa uses her love of

photography to explore her new home and to bring an appreciation for the beauty of nature to others. Alexa says, “This is my new home so I want to understand it better. I discover the beauty around me through my camera lens and I want to share this perspective with others. Sometimes we see things every day so much that we begin to take them for granted. I’m hoping my photos will help people rediscover the beauty that is all around us.” Alexa is an honors student who is a member of the girls’ varsity tennis team. Alexa has been fascinated with photography from a very young age, taking photos on a wide variety of subject matter around her home, her neighborhood and when she travels. Until her recent high school classes in photography, Alexa has not had any technical training, but has learned the art of photography

through trial and error. She has been praised for her artistic eye and keen sense of composition and use of light. Alexa would like to study photography in college among her other pursuits. Alexa is very excited to share her nature photographs with the HOBAS community and to help support its great work protecting and educating the public about wildlife and environmental conservation. Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society (HOBAS) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and is a chapter of the National Audubon Society serving Northern Oyster Bay and Huntington Townships with membership of approximately 1,000. The organization works to protect birds and other wildlife, and the habitats upon which they depend through education, public advocacy and conservation action.

Tony Nominated On June 4th, students from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School attended the HuntingTony Awards ceremony after being nominated in multiple categories for their past Musical Production, “The Little Mermaid.” This award ceremony recognizes plays and musicals produced by high schools in the Town of Huntington. Elwood-John H. Glenn

was nominated for several categories for school musical production: Best Stage Crew for a Musical; Best Costumes in a Musical; Best Technical Production in a Musical; Best Orchestra Pit; Best Ensemble in a Musical; and Best Dance Performances. There were solo nominations given to Lexie Spelman, who was nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Musical

and Best Female Vocalist; Felipe Gonzalez, who was nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Musical; and Terrance Sheldon, who was nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Musical and Best Male Vocalist. Winning awards went to the school’s orchestra for Best Orchestra Pit, and Felipe Gonzalez, who was named Best Featured Actor.

Exam Recognition A number of students from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2018 National Spanish Examinations. This year, more than 150,000 students took the exam nationwide. Of the school’s 130 students who took the exam, five students earned gold, which places them in the top 95th percentile of the nation. An additional

13 students earned silver, placing them in the 8594th percentile, 12 earned bronze within the 75-84th percentile, and 44 earned honorable mentions, above 50th percentile. Freshmen Kailee Andersen, Rithika Narayan and Daniel Rourke earned gold in the nonnative speaker category. Native speakers Lizbeth Almendarez and Maria Atuesta were also gold

winners. These winners were honored at an award ceremony on June 7th among other winners from the Long Island chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year at John Glenn in grades 9 through 12, and are sponsored by the AATSP.
