2019 Marks the 54th anniversary of the Huntington Summer Arts Festival with a new season of music, dance and entertainment. From June 25 - August 11, 6 days a week, Tuesday through Sunday touring artists and ensembles will be featured on the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park for the annual summer FREE performance festival. The Huntington Summer Arts Festival is produced by the Town of Huntington and presented by the Huntington Arts Council. Additional support is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the County of Suffolk and Canon U.S.A., Inc. All regularly scheduled performances take place at the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park and start at 8PM. The exception is Tuesday Family Night which begins at 7PM. We also have a FREE fun craft
available on Tuesdays for children at the HAC Craft table starting at 6PM. All performances are rain or shine. New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater
income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. student immediately went to work researching bridge designs. After settling on a design, students turned their ideas into sketches, sketches into digital copies, and then the digital copies into physical wooden bridges. Ben’s bridge design in particular was deemed the most aesthetically
pleasing at the competition, and was awarded a plaque from Brookhaven National Lab. While more than 50 students from nine schools qualified to participate in this competition, 27 students of those students were from John H. Glenn.

Disabling The Label and wore wristbands to show their support, experienced playing basketball in a wheelchair, and participated in in-class challenges to emulate what someone with a physical disability might feel on a regular basis. Students also attended a special assembly hosted by a young man who suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was young, but now visits hospitals around the country making
up songs and creating cartoons to raise patients spirits. “All week we encouraged students to see the “able” and not the label,” said special education teacher Ms. Martine Pirolo. “And we hope that this mindset will carry over into their everyday lives, continuing to enhance the atmosphere of empathy and kindness in our school.”

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: New Deer Park Avenue Firehouse The Dix Hills Fire District will unveil its new Deer Park Avenue Firehouse with a public Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Sunday, June 30, at 10:00 am. The facility will house and support the many Firefighters and Emergency Medical personnel who volunteer to protect Dix Hills residents. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will take place on June 30, 2019 at 10am at the new Firehouse, located at 115 Deer Park Road in Dix Hills. Following the ceremony, the Dix Hills Fire District will host a community barbeque as well as tours its new facility. All men and women interested in NARAYAN AWARDED HONORABLE MENTION - Rithika Narayan, a sophomore volunteering can speak at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School, recently competed in the second round of the Long to the Fire District’s Island Science and Engineering Fair and was awarded honorable mention. Additionally, Rithika also received an award for the best use of international metric units. While she is not advancing to the final round of the competition, as a sophomore, she has the next two academic years to compete again and advance further. We received a great deal of advice and assistance from local civic groups as well as many individuals, and we are grateful for all the support.” The new building is outfitted with two fire engines, an ambulance
