Flag Day Celebration
F
irst-grade students of Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District took part in the annual Harley Avenue Flag Day Celebration. The program was conducted by Harley music teacher Christina Long, with piano accompaniment by local piano teacher Marge Margolf. Throughout the performance, students recited facts about America’s flag and sang a series of songs celebrating it. Great job kids!

Since 2000, the swim has taken on an entirely new meaning for the Bay Shore/ Brightwaters and Fire Island communities. The 2012 Swim had the largest field of participants to date. Registration closed in early May, with a full foster of 100 participants. Through the dedication of numerous volunteers, local businesses and organizations, the swim grows and improves each year. Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I remember the moment like it was yesterday. Among the sea of caps and gowns, over the illustrious strains of Pomp & Circumstance… there he was, James Gandolfini, sitting one row behind my family at my college graduation. I could hear the buzz building behind me, as people started to notice. Why is he here? Is he speaking? Does he know someone who’s graduating? The fact that a celebrity was sitting among us was clearly the highlight for the thousand or so graduates on that day, some nine years ago, on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. I remember being very aware of his presence, as every time I glanced over my shoulder at my own little cheering section… there he was. When I walked up to receive my “unofficial” diploma (the real
one would arrive several weeks later), I carried a small index card with my name written on it to hand to the Dean. “Jamie Lynn Ryan” they announced. As I looked up at the sea of faces, my eye once again fell on Mr. Tony Soprano himself, only this time, he was looking right back at me. And with a big grin and a wink, he began applauding. I couldn’t believe it. I found myself glancing over both shoulders to see if the acknowledgement was meant for someone else, but there was no one there. As I walked back to my seat with a giant, silly smile on my face, I began quietly counting down the seconds until I could run and tell my family what had just happened. He smiled at me. He winked. He clapped. For me. What a doll. Following the ceremony, we all realized that he was indeed there for someone, his own niece, who we had apparently been attending school with for the last four years.
Who knew! And once I was able to meet up with my family, my brother revealed that he had gotten to the graduation tent a little early to reserve a row of seats, only to find Mr. Gandolfini sitting there already. Reluctant to disturb him at that point, they exchanged a slight greeting. Now, as the crowd began to disperse, people began tentatively approaching him to shake hands, ask for an autograph, maybe a photo… Me, I didn’t want to bother him. Ironically, that very occasion came up this past Father’s Day, as my brother and I reminisced over how we should have stopped to talk to him… and then came the tragic news just three days later. What a shame. I didn’t have the honor of truly knowing Mr. Gandolfini, but his presence surely touched me on one of the most memorable days of my life. May he Rest In Peace.

Sandcastle Contest
The 2013 Sandcastle Contest at Hither Hills State Park will be held each Thursday, beginning June 27th and running through August 29th. Sand sculptors may use sand, water and any other natural materials native to the beach. Prizes are provided by the Natural Heritage Truste and JR Water Corporation, the program’s co-sponsors. Even eight months after Super Storm Sandy tore through Long Island, storm ravaged communities, such as Long Beach, are still in need of assistance. Island Harvest Food Bank, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, has continuously driven efforts to aid disaster relief in these areas. Thanks to a generous donation from the Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Island Harvest was able to hold a supermarket gift card distribution to aid people in Long Beach still struggling from the storms aftermath. Over 300 people lined up on the sidewalks of Long Beach at last Monday’s gift card distribution. Of those who attended, 250 received gift cards while the next 120 received a disaster recovery food box, which provided a four person family with four days worth of food.

Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), the nationally renowned summer arts day camp, has long presented unique summer workshops on the latest techniques for arts educators. This summer, Usdan will present Finale: A Vibrant Tool For Today’s Music Educators. The workshops will take place from July 8th-11th (Monday to Thursday) and again from July 15th-18th. Hours are 9 a.m. to 12 noon daily at the Center’s 200acre Long Island campus in Wheatley Heights (Town of Huntington.) Usdan’s workshops will be taught by certified Finale clinician David Dolgon, and they will cover the notation and composition program that is the industry standard in music notation software, enabling composers, arrangers, musicians, teachers, students and publishers to create, edit, audition, print and publish musical scores. Usdan Center, which has introduced the arts, nature and ecology, and chess to

more than 60,000 students ages 6 to 18 in its 46- year history, presented the first New York State-wide Music Educator Technology Conference on Long Island. The Center has offered dance workshops, including Vibrant Curricula and Ballet Technique for Jazz Dance Teachers taught by Usdan’s Dance Chair and former Joffrey Ballet School head, Maurice Brandon Curry. Usdan also originated Long Island’s first Canadian Brass summer workshops, hosting two years of 3-day programs attended by music educators from across the country. Topics to be covered during this summer’s workshop include the use of Finale for music notation entry, techniques for producing score and parts, the use of Finale in creating original arrangements,

David Dolgon, a clinician for MakeMusic! (creator of Finale), has taught graduate courses for the College of New Rochelle and at Queens College. For the second year in a row, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck will be hosting its One Million Dollar Duck Race on July 13th on 2 Chet Swezey Road in Center Moriches. The event is to help raise money to benefit the camp’s special-needs children. The Million Dollar Duck Race starts at 5 p.m. Each duck costs $10. The $1 million prize will be awarded to the first- and tenth-place ducks if they are one of the pre-selected ducks. Seven thousand small ducks will be available for sale. General admission is $12 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Children’s admission includes a hot dog and soda. General admission will also include hayrides, bouncy rides, raffles and music. The Million Dollar Duck Race follows the Annual Kaler’s Pond Duck Race, which starts at 4 p.m. Each duck is available for $100, with 250 ducks for sale. There will be a $10,000 prize for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place, if all 250 ducks are sold. In the event all the ducks are not purchased, first prize will be split evenly between the winner and the camp. Both races are part of the camp’s 44th Annual Family Style Duck Bar-B-Que and Duck Race. Tickets are $30 for a duck dinner ($35 at the gate), $25 for a chicken dinner ($30 at the gate). Robert Bontempi and James Kelly have been appointed by the Chamber Executive Committee to serve as interim Co-Chairmen of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce following the sudden passing of recently appointed Chamber Chairman Larry Kushnick. Bob Scheiner, currently Vice Chairman of the Chamber Board, will become the ChairmanElect and will transition into the Chairman role in the future. The Chamber Chairman provides direction for the Chamber’s mission in promoting business, economic development and job creation through the coordinated effort of its membership. During the May Annual Meeting, the “State of the
Chamber” address was presented by incoming Chamber Chairman Larry Kushnick. The address focused on the Chamber’s vision to maintain economic strength, expand opportunities and continue to grow local business and industry within the community. Kushnick also announced a series of Chamber initiatives designed to offer more value for membership. “With the full agenda Larry put forward, we feel that between the two past Chairmen and one Chairman-Elect, we can divide the responsibilities and the three of us together can achieve the job that the one Chairman would have,” explained Bob Bontempi. In addition to the positions above, the Executive Board
Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone recently addressed the current Leadership Huntington class about emergency planning, the Town response to emergencies in general and the challenges posed by Hurricane Sandy. At the group’s June 14th session, Supervisor Petrone detailed the steps the Town takes in advance of emergencies, including ensuring that the Town’s emergency plan has been updated and that, in the case of storms such as Sandy, personnel and equipment are in place before the storm hits so they can respond immediately when needed. Supervisor Petrone also discussed the challenges
posed by Sandy, including the difficulties in communication because of widespread power outages, and the Town’s response, utilizing traditional media, social media and calls to landline phones, cell phones, emails and text messages. The Supervisor also said that the task force he appointed to review the Town’s response to Hurricane Sandy is expected to issue its report in a few weeks. Leadership Huntington, a not-for-profit membership organization, seeks to expand and improve the quality and effectiveness of leadership and trusteeship in Huntington by bringing together through its

Sessions run Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This season’s sessions are as follows: July 15th-19th: Wild World of Animals (ages 4-9) — It’s not always being green, spotted, striped or camouflaged. Children will learn about the many wonderful friends the Game Farm staff care for, as well as weird and quirky tidbits about each of them. They will also learn about the natural habitats, find out their special likes and dislikes, and create special keepsakes and memories that will last all summer long! July 22nd-26th: All “Kinds of Krazy” Animals (ages 7-12) — Herbivores. Carnivores. Omnivores. Children will learn about what the animals at the Game Farm and in the wild enjoy. They will also create special treats and toys for some of the Game Farm’s newest additions and longtime residents, as well as some special keepsakes to bring home. July 29th-August 2nd: Camp Zoo Carnival (ages 4-12) — Children will take part in fun and games inspired by a carnival theme as they join the Game Farm staff in bidding farewell to the summer until next year. They will also create special projects and learn about the Game
Farm’s favorite four-legged friends while enjoying some popcorn and other treats, for an animal sendoff, Game Farm-style! At the end of the week, all campers will receive a Camp Zoo T-shirt and a personalized CD containing photographs of their experiences at Camp Zoo. For the first time, this year, the Game Farm will host a Mini-Camp Zoo for children ages 3-5. This is ideal for campers who may not be ready for a full-day experience but love animals and making friends their own age. They will have the opportunity to explore the Game Farm and meet the interesting and friendly animals, make a project, share a smile, cuddle or pet the animals and learn about the many creatures here in Manorville. Oneday sessions are on June 27th and July 10th. A oneweek session runs from August 12th to August 16th. Sessions run each day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. “We can’t wait to get started with our ninth year of Camp Zoo and our firstever Mini Camp Zoo. This program is as exciting for us as it will be for the young campers. The camp is the ultimate animal experience where children will learn in-depth about different animals and wildlife issues. Our mission has always been to offer high-quality fun and education to families across Long Island and Camp Zoo takes that concept one step farther by really getting the kids
involved,” said Melinda Novak, Co-Owner of the Long Island Game Farm. “This looks to be our most fun year yet!” Registration for Camp Zoo is $425 per week for new campers and $375 per week for returning campers. Those between the ages of 12 and 14 and who have attended at least one week of Camp Zoo may become a Junior Camp Zoo Counselor. Registration is $275 per week for all Junior Camp Counselors, who will earn certification upon completion of the session. A deposit of $100 per child per week is required to ensure a child’s reservation. All balances are due by June 15th. Any camper who registers after that date is expected to pay the amount in full. Up to 25 campers are accepted for each session. Registration is on a first-come, firstserved basis. Mini Camp Zoo registration for each camper is $55 per day or $95 for both days. LI Film Festival The Long Island International Film Expo (LIIFE) will hold its 16th annual installment at the historic Bellmore Movies from July 17th through 25th. Showing 146 films from around the world, LIIFE will showcase movies from 18 countries with 36 of the films having Long Island ties and 35 more hailing from New York in general. “Nassau County has always been a supporter of independent and studio films, and it’s our pleasure to bring this type of entertainment and cultural opportunity to our constituents,” states Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano. “LIIFE also provides an opportunity for filmmakers to come and see the types of filming locations Nassau County has to offer whether it be our beaches, mansions, suburban areas and, of course, Gold Coast Studios and Grumman Studios, which are all NYS approved movie studios which qualify for the much sought after 30% tax credit.” “What makes LIIFE such an important film festival,” states Nassau County Film Office Director,
Debra Markowitz, “is not only that we bring rare short and feature-length independent films to the public, but that LIIFE has fostered a growing film community. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office welcomed 36 new recruits to the rank of Correction Officer during a graduation ceremony held at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue on June 14th. As recent recruits of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Academy Bureau, the new officers successfully navigated the academy’s rigorous thirteen week training program for the right to take their place among the other distinguished members of the Suffolk County Correction Officers. During their academy instruction, all officer candidates are required to successfully complete
a variety of classroom and field instruction including, but not limited to, firearm safety and handling, defensive tactics, emergency medical training and a rigorous program of physical fitness and testing. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco spoke at Friday’s ceremony and reinforced the importance of their work during his speech: “Not only do I believe you will be challenged in your new career in Corrections, but you will come to learn that the Suffolk County Correctional Facility is an innovative and progressive environment to work in.” He added, “As Correction

Healing Heart 5K
The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk, sponsored by East End Cardiology was held on Sunday, May 20th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. Despite the poor weather, more than 900 runners, walkers and spectators came out to participate in the much anticipated event. Following the race, event emcee, Rich Hoffman, News 12 Meteorologist, presented to the top male and female runners along
with the top runners in various age categories. Those in attendance were then treated to music by Rum Hill Rockers and Out East. A health expo was also available during the event and was open to all participants. The event raised over $80,000. Special thanks to all the donors, participants and volunteers, especially East End Cardiology, NJROTC and the Tortorella Group for supporting the American Heart Association and helping with all the day of event logistics. The Healing Heart 5K
hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. Golf Classic Set On Monday, July 8th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its third annual Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club on 483 West Main St., in Huntington. The price is $2,000 for a foursome. That includes brunch, a round of golf, cocktail hour and dinner. For dinner only (no golf), the cost is $175 per person. All proceeds from the event will go towards ADRC and The Mickey & Felice Neuwirth Care Center. The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chairs the golf tournament, is also Vice
President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Last year, the event successfully raised over $127,000 towards Alzheimer’s research and treatment. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a brunch at 10 a.m. At noon, there will be a barbeque lunch and shotgun start. The cocktail reception will start at 5 p.m., followed by a dinner, a program, trophies and raffles. Golfers will also have the chance to win a car in the Hole-In-One Challenge sponsored by MercedesBenz of Smithtown. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center - which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton - is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease
advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease through care and consultation, information and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products. As June comes to a close, thousands of Long Island’s students will be flocking to the beaches instead of to the classrooms. The end of June customarily signifies the end of the school year. With the end of the school year comes herds of teens with nothing scheduled to do all day. These newly freed kids will go to the beach in search of a little relaxation to unwind from yet another stressful school year. As the last bell of the year tolls, many local high schoolers will beeline straight for Long Island’s coast. After my final test, the Chemistry Regents, my friends and
I hopped on the ferry to Ocean Beach and spent some time enjoying the sand, the sun and the surf. It was nice just to forget about studying, about stress, and about doing our homework. The realization that we had just begun our three month relaxation period had finally started to set in. While playing in the water with my closest friends, we felt happy to be done with school. The pressure put on children from school magically disappears as you leave the classroom for the last time for almost 100 days. On that final day, the only worry one feels is whether or not they have a ride to
the beach. Here on Long Island, the beach is a Mecca for teens. With no worries about school, we are free to enjoy our downtime and finally let loose. As my friends and I exemplified, the primary goal of June - September shouldn’t rest upon education; it should rest upon relaxation. The precious little time you have to unwind is important to students. Everyone needs some time to just “shut your brain off” and get into the “summer mindset.” The end of the school year is a time that enables teens to have fun, relax and hang out with friends.
