School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) has announced that registration is now open for the Science Academy at Park Shore. The programs are designed to inspire Long Island students to become interested in science, technology, engineering, and math. The Robotics Science Academy afternoon camp for children in grades four through six is available as a one-week session on July 21st to July 25th from 1 to 5 p.m. and will focus exclusively on robotics. Children will have the opportunity to use LEGO Mindstorms hardware and software to design, build, and program a “NXT” generation robot. Principles of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) will be introduced to children. The Science Academy of
Park Shore’s morning day camp session for children in grades one through four is being held on two different sessions: July 28th to August 8th and August 11th to August 22nd, both from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Lunch is available at an additional cost. For children who are staying for lunch, pickup will be at 12:50 p.m. The Science Academy at Park Shore has developed a STEM-centered curriculum and takes place in four fully equipped laboratories.
Students are challenged through innovative and thought-provoking inquiries to develop a hypothesis, test and analyze data, and draw pertinent scientific conclusions. These activities are designed to develop a child’s critical thinking, creative design skills, problem-solving tactics, decision-making skills, and teamwork. “We are excited to collaborate with the Science Academy at Park Shore to enable children to continue
educational learning throughout the summer,” says Joani Madarash, Executive Director, SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. “These programs will stimulate the minds of young students with robotics, engineering, physical science, and life science and will be a fun, interactive camp for them to participate in while off from school.” Parents must transport their children for both the morning session and

The morning classes are followed by a gourmet lunch, catered by Long Island’s Suburban Eats, and a concert in the onsite, 1,000-seat McKinley Ampitheater, followed by afternoon recreation, which can include Chorus, Nature Walk, Archery or a campus tour. There will also be an optional swim in Usdan’s Olympic-sized pools, from 3:15 to 4:15

Distant Memories Swim Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) has announced that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher, will lead a team of swimmers in the 11th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Wednesday, July 23rd, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. In its lifetime, The Swim has raised in excess of $100,000 for those with Alzheimer’s Disease and their unpaid caregivers. Opening
ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 9:30 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will start out at Asharoken Beach and swim across the bay to Knollwood Beach — a distance of approximately 2.5 nautical miles (less than 3 miles). The swim will also help raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. through sponsorships and corporate donors. The goal is to raise $20,000 to
help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. “Bryan is a champion for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. He is a role model for the youth of our country,” states Mary Ann MalackRagona, Executive Director/ Chief Executive Officer for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “He
has continuously expressed the sentiment that he wants to raise awareness about this deadly disease and help families who live on Long Island.” “It is my hope that substantial funds will be raised to assist Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center in providing for people with dementia and other related disorders,” Mr. Proctor said. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center — which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton — is the only
local Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease through care and consultation, information and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products. Once in awhile, amidst all your bad days, you’ll have a good day. A great day, even. Make sure you remember those days. Keep them safely in the pockets of your coat or in a jar on your desk, because you need to know that there are and will be better days. You need to remember how, on those days, you felt all warm inside, like you’ve just drunk a hot cup of tea, like a small fire has ignited inside of you. Hold on to the warmth and never let it go. My eyes landed upon these words as I scanned through all the usual mundane drivel one tends to come across on Facebook, shared by one of my friends, and many before
her, from one of those sites which tend to cull such inspirational quotes and sayings. I did attempt to look up the original source, but to no avail; such is the gift and curse of the Internet, I suppose. In any case, whomever thought to put such eloquent words to a concept we all preach but seldom seem to practice – bravo! It is, essentially, just a rewording of the tried and true cliché to appreciate each and every day, to live life to the fullest, to know that “however good or bad a situation is, it will change” (yet another of those “famous” unattributed sayings). But, sometimes, we do need to be reminded. All
situations require appropriate perspective, something we often lack in the heat of the moment. And the happy times? Well they tend to get lost in the shuffle, swept aside in favor of dwelling on those days that didn’t go quite according to plan. I think that’s why I love photography so much. Memories are priceless, to be sure; but there is something truly precious – and irreplaceable – about capturing that instant of happiness forever. These are the days to remember, ‘cause they will not last forever… so said one of Long Island’s finest songwriters, Billy Joel. Best to store them away for a rainy day – or, in my case, snap a photo for posterity.

Motorcyclists from across Long Island will head out on the highway on Sunday, July 20th, for the Sticky Finger Twilight Run, an annual charity event to raise funds for the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. Summer is fast approaching and the Hamptons are gearing up for an exciting event season. An event that will once again stand out this summer is the American Heart Association’s 18th Annual Heart of the Hamptons Ball. The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation has given a $30,000 gift to Suffolk County Community College to establish the Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation Town of Islip History Scholarship. The scholarship will provide support for deserving Suffolk County Community College students who reside in the Town of Islip and study history. Three scholarships will be awarded each fall continuing through 2018, the Foundation and College announced today. A $2,000 per year scholarship will be
awarded to a full or parttime Suffolk County Community College student pursuing an A.A. degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences Social Science with a History emphasis or Liberal Arts and Sciences Adolescence Education History emphasis (Social Studies). A committee of college officials will review applications and make final determinations on all awards. “This is an exciting gift for Suffolk County Community College, one that will provide support and motivation

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Legislator Trotta praised the students and hoped that this recognition will encourage them to continue their interest in science and to one day compete in the Intel Science Competition.

Employer Appreciation
For over 50 years, The Northport Community Band has been delighting Northport residents and music lovers from all over Long Island. For five Thursday nights in July, the band performs at the Robert W. Krueger Bandstand in Northport Village Park, overlooking scenic Northport Harbor. Listeners can sit on blankets or lawn chairs in front of the bandstand, or even enjoy the music from their boats. The band’s musicians are volunteers from all walks of life and include local students, teachers and professional musicians. Founder Robert W. Krueger led the band from 1959 until his passing in September 2013. Director Donald M. Sherman has pledged to continue Bob’s legacy of tuneful community service, and many of Mr. Krueger’s favorite selections will be highlighted during the group’s 2014 summer season. This year’s theme – “Remembering Bob” – will feature a blend of marches, overtures, classics and popular favorites. Summer Arts Festival The Huntington Arts Council is proud to announce the opening weekend of the 49th Annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival, which begins Thursday, June 26th and runs through Sunday, June 29th. Featuring the Huntington Men’s Chorus, legendary artists Garland Jeffreys, Jimmy Webb and emerging talent Ester Rada, performances will start at 8:30 p.m. at the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park, Huntington. These and all festival concerts this summer are free admission and open to the general public. Join at the Chapin Rainbow Stage, Thursday, June 26th, at 8:30 p.m., for the first of our opening weekend performances featuring the Huntington Men’s Chorus. With over 100 active singing members, the Huntington Men’s Chorus has been performing for the town’s residents every summer since 1949. On Friday, June 27th singer, songwriter Garland Jeffreys will perform songs from his considerable back catalog (“Wild In The Streets”, “Hail, Hail Rock ‘N’ Roll”) as well as his highly acclaimed new CD “Truth Serum.” Garland’s work merges musical styles from rock and R&B to reggae and dance music with the passionate sensibility of an urban poet. Garland is enjoying the kind of creative second wind most artists can only hope for
the first time around, while earning a swarm of critical accolades and experiencing his most prolific stretch in decades. Jimmy Webb, a living legend of song writing and a true American treasure, performs Saturday evening July 28th. Webb writes the music and lyrics to all of his songs, including the hits “Wichita Lineman,” “MacArthur Park,” “Up, Up And Away,” “By The Time I Get To Phoenix,” and “Highwayman.” Webb, chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, charms his audience with his music and storytelling, full of humor and humility. He shares his story of how a 16-year-old farm boy found himself a star in Hollywood surrounded by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Glen Campbell, Elvis and more. Guitarist and singer Peter Calo will be the opening act. Wrapping up the weekend on Sunday June 29th is Israeli-born Ethiopian vocalist Ester Rada. Rada is rapidly gaining worldwide popularity thanks to touring across Europe, Canada, and the U.S.A. She gracefully combines Ethio-Jazz, urban-funk, neo-soul and R&B with mixed undertones of black grooves. The festival presents more than 40 exhilarating concerts and performances by a diverse roster of artists from around the world with programs of appeal for all
musical tastes and all ages. The popular Tuesday Night Family Series is especially attractive for families with young children. The series begins July 1st, at 7:30 p.m. with Plaza Theatrical Production’s “Beauty & The Beast.” Dancing flatware, menacing wolves, and singing furniture fill the stage with thrills in this beloved fairy tale about very different people finding strength in one another and learning how to love. The Huntington Community Band performs each Wednesday evening from July 2nd through July 30th. All performances during the Summer Arts Festival are free and held on the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park, Huntington. The festival runs from June 26th through August 10th. Growing Up & Moving On
Well, it’s officially summer. School is over and the weather is getting warm. I’m a high school graduate now, and I am expected to act like a man. Looking back, I find it strange that high school seniors are treated like children while they are making some of the most important decisions of their lives. I had to ask to use the restroom a few weeks ago. If we aren’t granted that much freedom, how can we be expected to make smart decisions regarding college? From my experiences, I do not think seventeen year-old kids are responsible enough to make their own decisions. Sure, there may be a few exceptions to the rule, but
generally this idea is true. This is not because we are naturally incapable and immature; it is because we are groomed to look toward others for help and reassurance. When we look at the classroom setting, it becomes clear just how spoon-fed high school students are! Instead of making their own decisions, which would invariably prepare them for real life experiences, administrators cull creative expression and positive decision making. In the Spring of their senior year, students are asked to make decisions regarding where they will spend the remaining four years of their academic career. This decision

The event raised more than $175,000 to benefit The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation to purchase cardiac monitoring equipment. Members of Girl Scout Troop #331 from James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District worked throughout the past school year to raise money for two new benches for the school’s playground. As part of earning their bronze awards, the troop was required to engage in a community service project that was sustainable. As a group, the Girl Scouts decided that the Boyd
playground was in need of two permanent benches. “During recess, it’s chaotic on the playground,” said fifth-grade Girl Scout Caitriona Meehan. “There was no place to sit and read a book, so we thought it would be important to provide that for our school.” With that vision, the girls held a variety of fundraisers throughout the year to raise enough money to purchase the
benches. In mid-June, their vision became a reality. Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Gary Furman and Interim Principal Lynn Burke joined the troop for a ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the new benches. “It makes me feel so good about myself because we are helping the community,” Caitriona added.

Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies. “Nobody should ever have to go without food, medical attention or other necessities, which is why our senior advocates literally bring these vital programs and services directly to our seniors in their own communities,” said Legislator D’Amaro. Senior Advocates meet with interested and needy seniors aged 60 and over at regularlyscheduled times in specific locations throughout the community. This Summer, they will be visiting the following locations in the Town of
