Your Public Library: Supporting the Community Through Crises The Northport-East Northport Public Library has always been there to support the community during a crisis. The Library aided the World War I effort through its participation in a program to send books to troops overseas. During The Great Depression, the Library’s meeting room became a workroom where local residents worked in shifts mending donated clothing that was then distributed to families in need. During World War II and in the years that followed, the Library did its part to support the war effort by again collecting donations of books to send to armed forces overseas and giving Red Cross volunteers use of the Library to prepare surgical dressings. More recently, following Tropical Storm Irene (2011) and Superstorm Sandy (2012), the Library provided recharging stations for electronics, wireless access, and information for those seeking help in locating emergency assistance. Today, we are proud to be doing our part during this health crisis. While our doors must remain closed, we are working beyond our physical building, joining other public libraries in

Recipients will receive a certificate of accomplishment and will be featured in a President’s Award slideshow and program. In addition to students receiving state-level awards, seniors were also recognized for National Merit Scholarship Commendations and several shining students earned memorial scholarship awards. On the evening of June 10, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School teachers, administrators and staff gathered together virtually to congratulate and present awards and scholarships to exceptional Class of 2020 graduating seniors. The 58th annual Senior Academic Awards Ceremony, while held virtually this year, was a great success. Students were recognized for outstanding academic achievements, leadership qualities and community service. “The faculty and staff at John Glenn High School miss our students very much,” Principal Carisa Burzynski said. “While tonight’s ceremony may look different than you had anticipated, we did not want to let your accomplishment go unnoticed.” Freshman Nate Tyll kicked off the evening with a wonderful piano introduction, which was followed by a few words from Ms. Burzynski and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert. Both thanked the Board of Education, teaching staff, administration, Academic

Social workers from Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Student Assistance Services collected 2,950 pounds of food during two food drives hosted this month. Gena
Marino, an ESBOCES school counselor, organized the events to support the Harry Chapin Food Bank through Long Island Cares, Inc. Student Assistance Services is
an ESBOCES program designed to address the social and emotional needs of students by placing professional counselors in schools.

Students Attend Virtual Holocaust Presentation
Nearly 200 eighth grade Northport-East Northport students joined a Google Meet with Holocaust survivor Werner Reich. For many years, Mr. Reich has visited both Northport and East Northport Middle Schools to present his story to the community. His virtual presentation was just as impactful. Mr. Reich answered students’ questions and shared his
story as a young man— around the students’ age— in Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Mr. Reich’s story is a tragic, but ultimately triumphant one, as he was able to survive his horrific experiences in numerous concentration camps for three years until he was liberated at the end of the war. Students asked Mr. Reich
many powerful questions and came away with a deeper understanding of the horrors of the Holocaust. Mr. Reich urged students to always speak out when they witness unkindness or injustice around them, saying that “good people” in the world must always speak out against the wrong that they see and should never “do nothing.”

Student’s Talent Show Performance Gets Unexpected Response Norwood Avenue Elementary School third grader, Charlotte DeLeo, recently submitted her talent show performance of Lisa Loeb’s song, “Stay,” where she recreated the popular music video, complete with a cat in a chair. What happened next was a welcome but unexpected surprise. Charlotte’s father RECRUITED HELP - Lisa Solomon, a teaching assistant from East Northport, submitted her performance to Loeb’s manager and was recruited the help of her community to donate 500 pounds of food.
pleasantly surprised to receive a video response from the award-winning singer songwriter herself. “I am beyond thrilled for Charlotte to have found an area to shine and be recognized for her efforts,” music teacher Maureen Edwards said. “Charlotte, I am so impressed with you. Catherine M. Blanchette, a resident of Medford, New York, died June 5, 2020 at Carillon Nursing Home, Huntington, New York. She was 90 years old. Mrs. Blanchett was born on November 1, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York to Francis Anthony and Lilliam M. (Dougherty) Bedell. Catherine was employed by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in Hempstead, New York at the time of her retirement. She is survived by her son Peter. A service was held at Powell Funeral Home on Saturday, June 13, 2020 conducted by Deacon Pa LaBella. Private cremation followed on Monday, June 15th with future interment in Amityville Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.
