The Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at WinthropUniversity Hospital held its Ninth Annual Black and White Ball at Oheka Castle on April 30th, an exquisite evening that raised more than $300,000 to benefit the CCFK’s essential psychosocial programs. Scattered Summer Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a
stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major
artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

It is only fitting that his extended family of singing musicians, join us in celebrating the Festival’s 50th Anniversary. Two generations of Chapins - his brothers Tom and Steve Chapin (with his band and son Jonathan), Harry’s daughter Jen Chapin and her band, Tom’s daughters Abigail & Lily, plus Howie Fields & Big John Wallace - will all be there. The Town of Huntington will rededicate the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park and recognize the whole Chapin Family. The evening will also celebrate WHY Hunger, and fans are asked to bring canned & non-perishable food items for Long Island Cares, Inc./ The Harry Chapin Food Bank. Both organizations were founded by Harry Chapin and continue the fight against hunger. The Huntington Choral Society takes the stage Sunday, June 28th. Their mission has been to present
the choral works to the Long Island Community and they do just that with their 100-member chorus. The Huntington Choral Society brings the wellknown choral works to life with some of the finest soloists and professional orchestras. This evening’s performance will present a selection of choral works and solos from the great shows of Broadway. Museum Anniversary a destination for regional visitors interested in natural history, the life of the oceans, armchair journeys through space, and the history of the privileged life on the Gold Coast from the Jazz Age through the Second World War. The Vanderbilt’s Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium is another magnet for visitors. The museum decided to add a planetarium in the late 1960s. Trustees knew a planetarium would enhance the museum’s ability to carry out the science-education aspect of its mission and to honor Mr. Vanderbilt’s love of science and astronomy, and his interest in celestial navigation. A planetarium also would augment the original Vanderbilt trust fund and help to ensure financial sustainability. The planetarium was opened to the public on June 28th, 1971. Mr. Vanderbilt - known to family and friends as Willie K. - loved the sea and the natural world. In his global oceanic travels, he collected fish and other marine life, birds, invertebrates and cultural artifacts for the personal museum he planned to
build on his Long Island estate. Willie Vanderbilt exhibited thousands of the marine specimens he had gathered - one of the world’s most extensive, privately assembled collections from the pre-atomic-era - in his own marine museum, the Hall of Fishes, which he opened to the public in 1922. Wings of the mansion contain galleries of his natural-history and cultural-artifact collections, including the Habitat with its nine wildanimal and marine-life dioramas and eight more in the adjacent Stoll Wing, all created by artisans from the American Museum of Natural History. The 43-acre waterfront museum complex counts among its extensive collections (which total more than 30,000 objects) the mansion, curator’s cottage, a seaplane hangar and boathouse, centuriesold household furnishings, rare decorative and fine art, the archives and photographic record of Vanderbilt’s circumnavigations of the globe, and published books of his travels. The estate, mansion and museum are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will celebrate the 65th anniversary of its official opening on July 6th. William K. Vanderbilt II - great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the railroad and shipping magnate - died in 1944. His wife Rosamund continued to live in the Vanderbilt Mansion in Centerport until her death in 1947. He realized the potential for his sprawling estate to become a museum for what he called “the use, education and enjoyment of the general public.” That wish prompted him to leave his estate, and a trust fund to finance its operation, to Suffolk County. The county opened the museum to the public on July 6th, 1950. The anniversary coincides with Arcadia Publishing’s release of Eagle’s Nest: The William K. Vanderbilt II Estate by Stephanie Gress, director of curatorial services for the museum. The book is available on the Arcadia Publishing, Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites, in the Vanderbilt Museum Gift Shop and at local bookstores. Today, the Vanderbilt estate and museum are an important part of Long Island history. It is

Collaborative Work Students in Ms. Collin’s Northport Middle School Earth Science class and Mr. Kubik’s Environment Team at Northport High School participated in the inaugural A Day in the Life of the Nissequogue River research project this year. The event was sponsored by the Central Pine Barrens Commission, Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Portal to Discovery, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the Suffolk County Water Authority. The students worked collaboratively to gather and analyze data from two sites within Caleb Smith State Park. Research groups actively engaged in interdisciplinary lessons in preparation and then performed fieldwork on site. Measurements of current direction and speed, air temperature
and cloud cover along with analysis of oxidized and anoxic sediment core samples down the shoreline and coast were taken. Biological samples and an aquatic and habitat association survey were conducted to record species and sizes of organisms before being safely returned to the environment. Chemical analysis of water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and salinity and turbidity were measured using water test kits, hydrometers and refractometers. All data was uploaded to the Portal to Discovery website for further study and investigation. Ms. Collin’s students attended the Ninth Annual Open Space Stewardship Program Symposium at Brookhaven National Laboratory on June 4th to present their findings.
Throughout the evening, they eagerly spoke about their project with the symposium attendees and were acknowledged for their hard work and dedication to environmental conservation. Mr. Kubik and his students examined comparative sites, including Twin Ponds in Centerport and the Peconic Estuary in Riverhead. Due to the dedication and exemplary work of these two teachers, Ms. Collins and Mr. Kubik will be awarded Professional Achievement Awards in the Northport-East Northport School District at the Board of Education Meeting on June 15th. They plan to continue participation in this research program to provide more students with the opportunity for authentic scientific study in the field.

Preserve Opens
Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone joined representatives from Suffolk County, New York State and the North Shore Land Alliance June 6th in celebrating the opening of the Wawapek Preserve, a nature preserve made possible by the joint purchase of a portion of the former DeForest Williams estate, ensuring that the land will not be developed. Named for the original Native American description for the property, the 32-acre Wawapek preserve is home to a variety of wildlife, trees and wildflowers, including Eastern box turtles (a New York State watch list species), at least three state-protected plants and a variety of birds. The sanctuary, which will be managed by the Land
Alliance, provided an opportunity for residents to take leisurely walks on the trails or sit on the benches and enjoy nature. “The Town is happy to have partnered with Suffolk County and the North Shore Land Alliance on this purchase, which not only preserves environmentally sensitive land but also provides educational and recreational opportunities for our residents. I hope that many people will walk these trails to see some of the unique flora and fauna that call the Wawapek Preserve their home,” Supervisor Petrone said Under the unusual joint purchase agreement, the Town and the Land Alliance each contributed 25 percent of $6 million purchase price for 27 of the acres, with Suffolk County
picking up the remaining 50 percent. Separately, the Land Alliance purchased an additional five acres that is being used for parking and a garden/orchard. The purchase is important both environmentally and historically. It lies within the Cold Spring Harbor Watershed and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The acquisition also fulfills a goal of the Oyster Bay-Cold Spring Harbor Watershed Plan. For the Town, the acquisition is the 38th since the Environmental Open Space and Park Fund was created by the first of three bond acts in 1998. Almost 300 acres have been purchased to date.

Plaque Ceremony With the announcement that the U.S. Department of Defense had added Huntington as an official Vietnam War Commemoration partner, Supervisor Frank P. Petrone kicked off a day’s worth of events June 11 marking the 40th anniversary of the war’s end that featured both a special breakfast and a ceremony unveiling the plaques adding 378 names to the Town’s Vietnam War memorial. More than 400 persons – veterans, their families, veterans groups and supporters – attended the breakfast, which included performances by the Island Symphony Orchestra and renowned tenor Christopher Macchio. Huntington native Frank Libutti, a retired U.S. Marine corps lieutenant general who also served as New York City’s deputy police commissioner overseeing the counterterrorism bureau and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s undersecretary for information analysis and infrastructure protection, delivered a stirring keynote address. Mr. Libutti spoke passionately about his service in Vietnam as a platoon commander and about the vivid memories of colleagues who saved his life and those who lost theirs. A key part of the breakfast program was the reading of the names of the 49 Huntington residents who were killed in Vietnam. “Much has changed in the four decades since the war’s end,” Supervisor Petrone noted in his message
introducing the commemorative journal. “Included among those changes is a broader understanding of the depth of the sacrifice made by all those who served in the war and an even greater appreciation of what they did in response to duty’s call.” The Supervisor noted that the Town was proud to receive the official commemoration partner designation from the Department of Defense as

Originally unveiled in 2003, the wall lists the names of Vietnam War era veterans who live or have lived in Huntington. That includes persons on the original three plaques and those who were added in the subsequent five years before the wall was closed in 2008 and a fourth plaque was installed. In 2013, representatives from the Huntington High School Class of 1964 reunion committee approached Supervisor Petrone about the possibility of reopening the wall to add names of about 20 of their classmates. The Supervisor determined that there was room for the wall to accommodate additional names and opened the wall to all eligible veterans for an additional period that ended December 31st, 2014. At the afternoon ceremony, Supervisor Petrone thanked the reunion committee members, especially Lou Pagano, a Vietnam veteran who chaired the an indication of the Town’s commitment to remembering committee. The ceremony also included remarks from those who served in the war. Paul Kelly, chair of the Vietnam committee of the Town’s Town Council Members Mark Cuthbertson, Susan A. Veterans Advisory Board. Berland and Eugene Cook also delivered brief remarks. Councilwoman Tracey Edwards was unable to attend. A few hours later, many of those who attended the

The Town of Huntington held a special luncheon June 9th to recognize long-time Town employees, highlighting the contributions of 61 workers who have been with the Town for 30 or more years. Of the 61, 15 are marking their 30th anniversary in 2015; another 15 marked theirs in 2014; and 31 have been with the Town for 32 or more years. Four have been with the Town for more than 40 years. The
longest-serving employee, Edward Schiavone in the Highway Department, has worked for the town for 46 years. Almost every Town department was represented, led by Highway, with 13 employees, and Environmental Waste Management and General Services, with 10 each. The honorees included two elected officials, Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia and Tax Receiver Ester Bivona,
each of whom celebrate their 33rd anniversary this year. At the luncheon, Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Town Council Members Mark Cuthbertson, Susan A. Berland, Eugene Cook and Tracey A. Edwards each thanked the employees for their dedication to the Town and its residents. The employees each received a proclamation from the Town, signed by the Town Board members.

Celebrity Golf Classic Rudolph Giuliani will be the recipient of the “Lifetime Achievement” award at the 30th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic hosted by The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) on Monday, July 13th at the Old Westbury Country Club in Old Westbury. The Marty Lyons Foundation was created by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange,” and a dedicated
group of volunteers. The Foundation grants wishes to children between the ages of three and 17 who have terminal or lifethreatening illnesses and is unique in that it considers granting a second wish to a deserving child. Mr. Giuliani has held a number of governmental positions during his career, including United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and is most remembered for his leadership and
resolve during and after the terrorist attacks that hit New York City on September 11th, 2001. He was named the “Person of the Year” for 2001 by Time magazine and was given an honorary knighthood by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2002 in recognition of his ability to bring not only New York City together during a time of unspeakable sorrow and terror, but also many people around the world. Upon leaving office in
2002, Mr. Giuliani founded a security consulting business, Giuliani Partners LLC, and in 2005 joined the law firm now known as Bracewell & Giuliani LLP. Mr. Giuliani met Mr. Lyons in the mid-1980s and has been a generous supporter of The Marty Lyons Foundation ever since. “The Mayor has done so much for the people of New York, and so much for me personally. I’m blessed and honored to call him my friend. I am proud to
have the opportunity to present this special award to Mayor Giuliani,” said Mr. Lyons The MLF is not-for-profit charitable, tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization. Since 1982 it has have granted over 7,000 wishes and is proud to have 10 chapters covering 13 states.
