The Fourth of July is Near, Read About it Here!

Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment. Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament. “Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain. Conﬂict between the colonies had been going on for at least a

year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military.com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the

formation of the United States of America. A total of 56 delegates signed the document. Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures. Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text. The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square on July 8, 1776. We hope everyone enjoys the Fourth of July. Let us embrace our country’s history, enjoy our freedoms and unite over the love of our country.

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers

can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and ﬁll out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to ﬁnd out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Lastly, the farm is in need of some repairs; they need a new roof on their barn, plumbing assistance and fountain repair. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Exceptional Students Honored During Extracurricular Awards Ceremony Northport High School honored dozens of students during their annual Extracurricular Awards ceremony. Students were recognized for their hard work in clubs and activities across all departments, including Spanish club, Environment Team, Business Honor Society and band, amongst many others. As the evening went on, teachers and administrators

spoke of students’ accomplishments and positive attitudes with respect to their activities. Some described the students’ ability to pivot during the pandemic while simultaneously making the best Principal Daniel Danbusky requested applause for the students who deserve “tremendous recognition”. “Parents have been an integral part of this process, and we’re celebrating

the culmination of four years of involvement in activity” he said at the start of the evening. “There is no shortage of research that shows students who get involved, and students who have that connection to their school, perform better. Please don’t lose that desire to be involved” he added. Students each received a plaque of recognition to honor their achievements.
