Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District recently piloted a Goat Yoga program. After school on May 19, staff and students gathered at the tennis courts to participate in yoga to foster connections, encourage mindfulness and let go of stress, accompanied by several adorable goats. Principal Maribeth Corr

launched the program as part of OIdfield’s mindfulness and socialemotional wellness initiatives to respond to the increase in anxiety among the school’s students. “Teachers and students participated in the goat yoga event together, further solidifying support for our students and fostering their connection to school,” eighth grade

guidance counselor Dahlia Roemer said. “Using animal therapy is already something we feel strongly about and has been effective in providing comfort to students daily. Given that a national mental health crisis was recently declared, this is a pilot program that we hope to expand to reach more students to address emotional needs.”

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School recently got the big news that its annual musical production of “The Addams Family” had been nominated for 10 Hunting-Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The awards ceremony will take place on June 6 at Huntington High School. Other nominations include senior Braden Gastaldi (as “Gomez

Addams”) for Best Lead Actor and Best Male Vocalist, senior Jenna Velez (“Alice”) for Best Supporting Actress and Best Female Vocal Performance, senior Aidan McNamara (“Uncle Fester”) for Best Supporting Actor, junior Colby Knorr (“Lurch”) for Best Featured Actor, Best Pit Orchestra, Best Technical Production and Best Crew.

“The Addams Family” was performed on March 25 and 26 in John Glenn’s brand-new Performing Arts Center, with representatives from the Town of Huntington in attendance. “Congratulations to the entire cast, crew, pit and production team for an incredible collaborative effort,” teacher Rachel Nagle said.

Cold Spring Harbor High School, behind the dominant faceoff wins and goals of senior midfielder Max Hawkinson, defeated Port Jefferson High School 9-3 in the Class D 2022 Long Island Boys Lacrosse Championships at Hofstra University’s James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday, June 4. By capturing 13 of 14 faceoffs and scoring

three goals, Hawkinson received the game’s James C. Metzger MVP Award. One of the team’s captains, Hawkinson is committed to Rutgers University. The award was presented by James C. Metzger, a 1970s Long Island lacrosse star and now a lacrosse benefactor who received the 1977 Lt. Ray Enners Award as outstanding Suffolk County player and

then was an All-American at Hofstra University. A member of the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame and the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame, Metzger is founder, chairman and CEO of Whitmore – The Agency, a leading insurance services and estate planning company in the New York metropolitan area that is headquartered in Garden City.

Schreiber Senior High School in Port Washington 13-9 in the Class A 2022 Long Island Boys Lacrosse Championships at Hofstra University’s James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday, June 4. Free Transportation Through ‘Ride United’ United Way of Long Island recently launched ‘Ride United’ to help local residents access transportation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the rideshare service Lyft. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Riders must download the Lyft app on a supported device and have an active Lyft account. “United Way of Long Island is committed to keeping our communities safe and healthy. Ride United removes barriers of transportation inequity, ensuring that any Long Islander seeking to get vaccinated can get to and from their

PSEG Long Island Is Prepared For Summer 2022 As the approaching 10th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy reminds us of the effects weather can have on the electric system, PSEG Long Island is announcing that it is prepared for hurricane season and to meet peak demand during extreme heat situations this summer. The company’s ongoing electric infrastructure and storm hardening improvements help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year. PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures. “We are committed to providing reliable electric service every day, regardless of the conditions,” said Michael Sullivan, vice president of Electric Operations, PSEG Long Island. “The improvements we have made over the past eight years will help us deliver consistent, resilient power to our customers, today and in the future.” Electric Infrastructure Improvements Across Long Island and the Rockaways, PSEG Long Island has prepared the electric infrastructure by focusing on substation, and transmission and distribution improvements, as well as

by performing circuit and equipment inspections using drones, helicopters and infrared technology. PSEG Long Island’s infrastructure improvements for summer 2022 include: · New or upgraded transformers installed in Round Swamp, Navy Road, Ronkonkoma, Riverhead and Brightwaters substations to provide additional capacity during peak demand · 12 new distribution feeder lines installed in Ocean Beach, Far Rockaway, Round Swamp, Ronkonkoma, Brightwaters and Southampton areas to accommodate load growth · 4 kilovolt (kV) feeder converted to a 13.8 kV feeder line in Montauk area to provide additional feeder capacity · Overhead line replacement in Eastport to supply new load addition · New Round Swamp Road substation constructed with two new 69 kV transmission lines installed from Ruland Road and Plainview substations to serve new load additions in the area · Robert Moses to Captree 23 kV transmission cable replacement to improve reliability on Fire Island · MTA Beach 67th Street 33 kV transmission circuit relocation to support MTA station upgrades in Far Rockaway Storm Hardening Programs Completed

PSEG Long Island crews performing storm-hardening work on the distribution system. Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded stormhardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 1,000 miles of distribution mainline circuits. From the first quarter of 2021 to the first quarter of 2022, the sections of circuits that are storm hardened saw a 44% reduction in damage leading to outages compared to the rest of the distribution system. PSEG Long Island is proud to continue its storm hardening work with

Power On, an initiative started in the spring of 2020 that will continue to improve reliability by strengthening distribution lines, targeting the most vulnerable circuits across Long Island and the Rockaways. Since the launch, an additional more than 190 miles of distribution mainline circuits have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment. To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program

work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. Since 2014, PSEG Long Island removed more than 88,500 hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed more than 21,000 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future

growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 14,000 vine locations across Long Island and the Rockaways. PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summer-peak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.

The Differences Between Weather Warnings And Watches Weather is hard to predict. Meteorologists have many tools at their disposal to help forecast storms and other phenomena, but it is impossible to predict the weather with 100 percent accuracy. When the weather takes a turn for the worse, the National Weather Service may issue certain notices to prepare the public. Understanding

the level of threat a notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid serious consequences. The NWS uses a fourtier system to alert the public of hazards. Here’s a closer look at what each tier constitutes.

follow the same timeline with issuing alerts. That depends on how fast a weather situation develops. If there is time, an advisory, then a watch and then a warning may be issued. However, if a storm moves in rapidly, only a warning may be issued. People always should pay attention to weather notices so they can be prepared should severe weather be in the forecast.

The organization’s dedicated team of administrators, direct support professionals and clinicians work together to provide a continuum of care. Services are provided in residences across Queens and Long Island that feel like home.

The majority of individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities served by Little Flower participate in their Family Care program. Family Care providers provide an extended, supportive family to individuals who cannot live independently in the community by welcoming them into their homes and families. They support them as they become productive and active members of their community. All Family Care providers are certiﬁed by New York State and are supervised and monitored by Little Flower. Family Care providers are a dedicated group that does so much day in and day out by providing personal, social, emotional and physical care. They help these extraordinary individuals live full lives, whether by assisting with scheduling and attending doctor’s appointments, supporting them in seeking employment or helping them gain new experiences on family vacations or community activities.

On any given day, direct support professionals help empower IRA residents by supporting them as they overcome challenges to reach their best potential. While supporting their basic health and well-being, they assist the residents with rehabilitation, guide them in recreational and group activities such as fishing trips or vacations, and support them in their day-to-day goals and as active members of their community. Little Flower continues to discover extraordinary abilities within their residents, and while those individuals may face a more challenging future than most, the organization is confident that they can still enjoy a full and active life. They truly feel that what they need most is encouragement, understanding and the willingness of others to help them maximize their opportunities for becoming part of the community. Have Your Furry Friends Tested Annually The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.
