To kick off the day, each student presented a piece of writing about his or her favorite memory of kindergarten. Following an introduction by Principal Elissa Toubin, the kindergartners recited a poem and sang original songs.

former guidance counselor, teacher and coach in the Connetquot Central School District and one of the founders of the Suffolk County Hall of Fame. Nominees are chosen on the basis of outstanding athletic ability as well as having displayed exceptional character and integrity. In addition to this honor, each award recipient is provided with a $1,000 scholarship. The two gifted athletes left their mark in the Harborfields athletics program with their
exceptional performances. Scanlon was a devoted member of the crosscountry and track and field teams for his four years of high school. He will attend Boston College in the fall where he will continue practicing his sport. Simkins was a member of several sports teams. Most notably, she excelled on the girls lacrosse team at the varsity level for the past four seasons. In the fall, she will attend Syracuse University on an athletic scholarship for girls lacrosse.

They also sang original songs, under the direction of music teacher Christina Long, about moving up to first grade and topics they had learned during the school year. “Our children have learned so much this year,” said Toubin. “They have learned to read, write and do math, but most importantly, they have developed friendships in
their classes and across the grade that will last a lifetime.” Parents cheered on the kindergartners as they participated in several outdoor activities and games, which were coordinated by physical education teacher Stephen Robins. The event concluded with parents, friends and students returning indoors to enjoy snacks in the classroom.

Presiding Officer Gregory feels that teachers who go above and beyond should be recognized and encouraged, so he reached out to schools in the 15th legislative district in search of these extraordinary educators. Administrators, faculty and staff were encouraged to nominate a colleague in their school district who “goes the extra mile” and who they felt was worthy of recognition. Over 40 educators from the Copiague, Amityville, Lindenhurst, Half Hollow Hills, West Babylon, North Babylon and Wyandanch
school districts were honored at the event, receiving proclamations and words of praise from Presiding Officer Gregory. “Every one of us has a teacher who has touched our lives that we will never forget,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Teachers are unsung heroes, and it is very important to me to take the opportunity to highlight some of the many exceptional teachers who educate our children and make a positive impact on their students and colleagues alike. I applaud the efforts of all of the educators who were recognized tonight.”
Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone met recently with the members of Brownie Girl Scout Troop 286, speaking with them about and thanking them for the mural that has been on display in the lobby of Town Hall. The scouts, who attend Washington Drive Primary
School in Centerport, earned their Girl Scout painting badge by painting several pieces, including the 10-foot-by-threefoot mural depicting the community. The mural indicates several locations in the Town, including Town Hall and some of the girls’ favorite businesses.
Supervisor Petrone welcomed the scouts, their leaders and their parents to Town Hall and spoke with them about the process by which they created the mural, which will remain on display until the end of the month.

Thousands of quarters were spread out to display the funds collected on behalf of special needs children for the Smile for a Mile campaign. Young members of The Chai Center’s Hebrew School and CTeen programs, ages 8 to 17 years-old, spent the last several months raising money to help special needs children by collecting enough quarters to stretch out for a mile or more. More than $4,000 was raised with all proceeds to benefit The Friendship Circle and special needs children and fund programs such as Bowling Buddies, Pet Therapy, Friends @ Home and holiday events. There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon. Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category. Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list. It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way. This is where that spontaneity comes into play. Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday
celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed. Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone? Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day. Phase one went off without a
hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. And then came the rains. Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge. Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations… And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.
