Celebrating 40 Years programming to listeners on Long Island and in Southern Connecticut for four decades. WUSB’s purpose is to provide a forum for innovative and commercial free radio in the form of public service announcements, educational use, music of varied genres and cultures, community affairs and events, campus and local news, collegiate and national sports, and other student and community oriented programming. The past 11 years at WUSB have been guided by Isobel Breheny-Schafer, Assistant Director of Student Media in the department of Student Engagement,who was hired in August 2006 to become the General Manager after the retirement of Faculty Advisor Norman L. Prusslin in January 2006, who originated the position and served

in it for 28 years. Isobel Breheny-Schafer received her Bachelor of Science in Business Management and her Masters of Arts and Certification in Informations Systems from Stony Brook University and had been a member of WUSB’s volunteer staff for six years previous to her becoming General Manager. On Sunday, June 25th, WUSB 90.1FM Stony Brook will host an Awards Recognition and Anniversary Brunch to celebrate 40 years of Long Island radio broadcasting from Stony Brook University, N.Y. The event will honor our Stony Brook University supporters, listeners, administrators, community members, as well as on-air and alumni staff who have made it possible to provide this individual and unique service to the public for the past 40 years as a non-

Organization Dissolves At its May 19th, Convention, a motion was made and approved to dissolve the Long Island Federation of Women’s Clubs, Inc. (LIFWC) after 124 years. Since its founding in 1895, the LIFWC has always taken pride and dignity in serving the women’s clubs and students of Long Island, including the awarding of hundreds of educational gifts totaling thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, it has become apparent in recent years that its programs and activities have become incorporated into the

workings of individual women’s clubs throughout Long Island. Frances Rotondo, LIFWC President, chaired the last meeting on June 12th where board members discussed preserving important records and memorabilia documenting the history of the organization. Under the leadership of Tina Diamond, Convention Chair, and her committee, the LIFWC held its last Convention at Chateau Briand where educational awards totaling $8,000 were presented to eight Long Island high school seniors planning to

continue their academic studies in various colleges and universities. At the General Federation of Women’s Clubs – NYS Convention, the LIFWC was the recipient of several awards: the Junior League Special Projects Advocates for Children Award; the Community Service Award and a special award to Linda Akers, Past LIFWC President, for her golf poem. In closing, thanks the member clubs and the community for their generosity and support.

One Tap shoes laced and ready to go. Costume hung on the doorknob with care. Steps on constant replay in my head {flap, flap, flap, shuffle hop…} all in preparation for the big night, my return to the dance recital stage after a five-year hiatus. Cue the butterflies. I have had a love/ hate relationship with performing for the majority of my twenty years at the studio. On the one hand, there is nothing quite comparable to that moment when the lights come up, the music begins to play and the rush of the moment engulfs you to the point that you simply perform – no overthinking what step comes next, am I smiling too much,

not enough; are my arms graceful, my hands “jazzy”… Of course, there is also that other scenario, that one that plays out in your subconscious the night before – the one where all the carefully rehearsed choreography evaporates from your memory at the most inopportune moment; generally when you happen to be front and center, spotlight squarely on you, smile frozen as you desperately try to ad lib something, anything. I would say I’ve had my share of each extreme through the years. It began with my very first recital at the tender age of six when I flew onstage mid-song, arms flailing, as I tried to catch up with my classmates as

we performed “Somewhere Out There” in our lemon yellow tutus. It ended, some twenty-plus years later, in a “big girl” tutu of silvery sparkle, dancing to “Wizards of Winter,” only this time I made it out for the entire performance. As I write these words, the stage is set – pun intended – for my grand finale tomorrow evening. Two numbers to perform over two acts, including, appropriately enough, the grand finale to “One” from A Chorus Line. One more time in the spotlight, one last night to shine… at least that’s the plan, anyway. Coming Next Week: Curtain Call

On June 27th, WUSB 90.1 FM Stony Brook will mark 40 years of Long Island non-commercial radio broadcast service. WUSB broadcasts originate from the campus of Stony Brook University, Long Island, New York. WUSB was originally an on-campus carriercurrent student station from 1963 until receiving Federal Communications Commission licensing for FM transmission in June 1977. Northport High School varsity girls basketball coach Richard Castellano will be inducted into the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Hall of Fame this July in Clayton, New York. Castellano began coaching girls varsity basketball at the high school in 1979 and has obtained up to 613 wins, 21 League titles, 10 County Championships, five Long Island Championships and made the NYSPHSAA State Semifinals three times.

He was also inducted into the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame the same year. He was recognized on several occasions for his coaching skills including being named Newsday’s “Coach of the Year” four times, NY Daily News “Coach of the Year” twice and was honored as “BCANY Section Coach of the Year.” In addition to coaching, Castellano takes pride in his community. He

created the Suffolk County Coaches vs. Cancer/Score for a Cure Fundraiser, which is a program that 95 percent of schools in Suffolk County currently participate in. During Richards’s 22-years as President of SCWBCA, he awarded over $250,000 to basketball players for camps and college scholarships. “I am honored and humbled to be inducted into the NYS Hall of Fame,” said Castellano. “I have had hundreds of outstanding student-athletes who have played for me in my career and they are the reason for our successes. I have had a great coaching staff at every level of our basketball program that have also contributed to the Northport HS Lady Tiger Pride.” Castellano thanked the entire Northport-East Northport community for always supporting the Lady Tigers for every one of his 38 years on the court. Program seeks to leverage Vet-to-Vet relationships to enhance positive change through planned learning, and personal growth experiences including group and/or individual peer engagement. The unique nature of the Joseph P. Dwyer Program is that veterans are serving as the facilitators, which helps provide a comfortable and familiar setting for veterans seeking assistance. As a result of the Program’s successes locally, the Suffolk County model has now been replicated and administered in 16 counties across New York State. The program offers a confidential, one-onone peer approach that has captured national attention, and is being considered as a model to expand across the country. In Congress, Rep. Zeldin recently re-introduced his bill, H.R. 897, to expand nationally the PFC Joseph Dwyer Program. This bipartisan legislation has received support from the entire Long Island Congressional delegation.

For the period of January 2016 through December 2016, there were 323 Dwyer peer group meetings held with a total attendance of 1,211 – averaging four veterans per meeting. The total unduplicated number of veterans that served in peer group meetings last year was 334. On average, there were six weekly meeting sites available for these groups each month, including Amityville, Huntington, Bay Shore, Patchogue, Yaphank, Riverhead, and Sag Harbor. As a result of additional state funding provided and willing community partners, Suffolk County was able to establish several additional bi-weekly and monthly group opportunities. Dwyer Program has a proven track record of assisting veterans through direct, one-onone engagement in a comfortable setting so that they can receive the support necessary to make a successful transition.” Congressman Lee Zeldin said, “Delivering the highest quality of care for our veterans must be a highest priority. The PFC Joseph Dwyer Program is an exceptional model for our veterans with the mental wounds of war and should be replicated nationally. I commend Suffolk County for its incredible effort developing this peer support model and I am honored to have been part of this important

effort.” New York State Senator Tom Croci said: “The circumstances that many of our men and women in the military endure are sometimes beyond comprehension. Having a program like this to offer the mental and emotional support is a terrific step in reacclimatizing them back into society and their homes. I applaud Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Camp Pa-quatuck for their commitment and dedication to our service men and women in implementing this first rate program.” Since its inception in 2012, over 10,000 veterans have participated in the Joseph P. Dwyer Program countywide – sharing their experiences with fellow veterans and allowing the healing process to begin. As part of the outreach effort, the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency issued an informational pamphlet on the Joseph P. Dwyer Program to veteran households throughout the County. Those outreach efforts continue as the

Program builds awareness and participation. Suffolk County Veterans Services Agency Director, Thomas Ronayne said: “A certainty among veterans is that a bond exists with our fellow veterans. Men and women we have never met are our brothers, sisters and family. Families take care of each other and that is precisely what we try to do through the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency and the Joseph Dwyer Program. Veterans working with other veterans to serve and protect one another in the ways that we are uniquely equipped to do. Suffolk’s long tradition of honoring, respecting and serving our veterans was made stronger today through the annual Day of Wellness.” This innovative program provides safe, confidential, supportive, and educational opportunities for veterans who have faced challenges in their postservice transition to meet with other veterans in support of their regaining their personal resilience and direction. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today hosted the fourth annual Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans’ and Family Day of Wellness, which provides a setting for local veterans and their family members dealing with post-service transition issues to participate in wellness related activities. The free event also serves as a chance to provide critical information and awareness about the Joseph P. Dwyer Peer to Peer Program, which is overseen by the Suffolk County Veteran’s Service Agency and is designed to serve veterans, active duty, reserve and National Guard troops suffering from PTSD and other adjustment conditions. The program is named for Private First Class Joseph Dwyer, who was a U.S. Army Combat Medic and Mount Sinai resident that served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. PFC Dwyer received national attention after a photograph surfaced that showed him carrying a wounded Iraqi boy, while his unit was fighting its way to Baghdad. After

More than 150 Long Island community members and people with disabilities recently supported ACLD Foundation and the over 3,000 people that Bethpageheadquartered Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) serves each year by participating in ACLD Foundation’s Second Annual Walk/Run: Journey To An Enviable Life at Heckscher State Park in East Islip, where the event raised more than $31,000 benefiting ACLD programs and services. The activities kicked-off with opening remarks from ACLD Executive Director Robert C. Goldsmith, followed by a pre-run stretch and warm-up led by HOPEFitness, a fitness and sports training center that provides classes and fitness programs for participants who are physically or intellectually challenged. The event included a 5K Walk/Run and a 1K Fun Run. Five Oldfield Middle School students recently won top spots in the Town of Huntington’s 17th annual Huntington in Bloom Art Contest. Only three students from each grade level were crowned winners for the entire town of Huntington. Under the direction of

South Huntington School District student Jade Tintera of Birchwood Intermediate School was recently honored by Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro as the Second Place winner in the County’s 2017 “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Established in 2007, the competition invites elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety by creating a poster that illustrates pool safety tips. One poster is selected from all of those submitted to be used as part of a countywide message from the Suffolk County Department of Health

Services in its seasonal safety campaign. Entries were submitted by students from throughout Legislative District 17 and, initially, Jade’s creative design was named the District winner. Her poster was then submitted to compete at the County level where it was ultimately selected as the Second Place winner by the non-partisan Legislature Budget Review Office. Each contest participant received a Certificate of Distinguished Achievement and Jade was awarded a special Suffolk County Proclamation from Legislator D’Amaro before the entire Legislature at

the June 6 meeting. She was joined by her mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother, as well as Birchwood Intermediate School Principal Anthony Ciccarelli, at the ceremony. “Our ‘Be Pool Smart’ poster contest directly engages children in learning the importance of pool safety to help avoid tragedies,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “I thank all of the students who participated in the poster contest and especially want to congratulate Jade on her winning design. She has made her family and our entire community proud.”

During the NorthportEast Northport’s recent Board of Education meeting, the board recognized a number of students from throughout the district for their high achievements in several department areas. Director of Fine and Performing Arts Dr. Izzet Mergen recognized two seniors as Students of the Month. Jeannette Wells was presented as Art Department Student of the Month, while Anthony Bokina was presented as Music Department Student of the Month. Both students were each brought up in front of the board where they were praised for their successes throughout high school, their strong work ethic and outstanding talent. Several elementary school students were also honored by District

Chairperson of Science and Technology Education David Storch for earning top spots at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary Science Fair back in May. The board presented certificates to the four first place winners and seven honorable mention receipients. Exceptional students in mathematics were recognized by District Chairperson of Mathematics Robin Rann. She presented awards to the gold, silver and bronze Long Island Math Fair winners. The district had a total of 10 gold, 15 silver and six bronze students place during the competition. Rann also presented awards to the American Mathematics Competition winners from both the middle school level and high school. She praised

the Suffolk County Math Tournment winners, the high scorers on the Suffolk County Math Teacher’s Association (SCMTA) Mathematics Course Contests, the Mathlete high scorers for the season and also commended junior Nicholas Holfester for receiving the Rensselaer Medal Award from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. With this award, Holfester will receive a $25,000 a year scholarship to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In addition, Dr. Mergen introduced a large number of students who were named Visual Art Award recipients. Programming Pals Fourth-grade students in Norwood Avenue Elementary School’s coding club recently visited Northport High School as part of the district’s collaborative program called “Programming Pals.” The fourth-graders worked in conjunction with high school students to learn more about coding and “Makerspace” type activities. High school students created different centers that the fourth-graders

rotated through. Stations included: Mad Libs, where students coded using different adjectives to produce a funny story; Tic Tac Toe, where students had to choose numbers in a coded version of the game to play against the computer and win; App Inventor, where students programmed an App to be customized in the way they want it to appear on a phone; Fidget Spinner, where students used hot glue, bearings, washers

and popsicle sticks to create the popular gadget and Ozobots, where high school students helped fourth-graders navigate how to program small robots to follow a specific path by following commands. “Our hope is that the younger students get to see and experience what is offered and available in the high school,” said Instructional Technology Resource Teacher Jennifer Baranaskas.

Exceptional Earth Science Students Evan Mock were named second place winners. Oldfield Middle School also had the highest combined score among all participating schools in the Earth Science category. The combined score was the sum of the top 10 scorers in the school and were made up of the first and second place winners, as well as students Ryan Armstrong, Kimberly DeSantis, Ty Ellenbogen, Jenna Forestiero, Emma Hardwick, Theodore

Krijnse Locker, Mia Kushner and Jacky Xie. The students prepared for the contest under the guidance of their Earth Science teachers Phyllis Hoar and Karen Fisher and medals were presented to the first and second place winners. Aspiring Young Scientists Several elementary school students from throughout the NorthportEast Northport School District recently participated in the Brookhaven National Laboratory’s 2017 Elementary School Science Fair, where the district took home four first place and seven honorable mention awards. The winners were recognized and presented with certificates during a recent board of education meeting. More than 100 Suffolk County schools took part in the competition with only seven winners earning first place from grades kindergarten through sixth-grade. Kindergartner Matthew Macartney, fourth-grader Lily Rogers, fifth-grader

Faith Hoerning and Dickinson Avenue students in Jill-Marie Mika’s thirdgrade class were all named first place winners for their outstanding projects. In addition, honorable mention was awarded to Bellerose Avenue Elementary School kindergartners in Deborah Ronan’s class, kindergartner Michaela Bruno, first-grader Matthew Pokorny, secondgrader Lily Suarez, thirdgrader Lucy Mulholland and fourth-graders Jacob Raimo and Samantha DeNisco. To showcase their projects at the BNL Elementary School Science Fair, the students first had to participate in their school level science fairs. Approximately 450

students from all six of the district’s elementary school’s took part in the fairs, including one group project from every class in kindergarten through fifth-grade. Secondary teachers from both middle schools and the high school judged the projects on several components. The strongest projects were then nominated to continue on at the second annual Science Fair Expo, with first-place winners moving up to the Brookhaven National Laboratory level. “It is truly an outstanding accomplishment of our elementary school students,” said District Chairperson of Science & Technology Education David Storch.

Walking for Wellness The Ocean Avenue Elementary School community banded together on June 2nd for the school’s annual Walk for Wellness event. Family members showed their support by attending the walk, which focuses on promoting health and wellness and has taken place for more than 20 years. Starting at the school,

fifth-graders led the way down the hill with students holding up health-related signs and showing their school pride. The Northport Police Department was on hand to keep everyone safe as the students walked up Main Street and back up Norwood/Dogwood until they reached the school again. Principal Sabina Larkin also walked with the classes as they cheered.

During the walk, students encouraged drivers to honk in support and many residents came outside to greet the children as they passed. To prepare for the big walk, students in third to fifth-grade took part in a Fun Run for the month of May. This run allowed them to run a total of eight or more miles during recess.

Senior Awards Ceremony A number of graduating seniors from Northport High School were recognized and awarded scholarships during the school’s 45th annual Senior Awards Ceremony on June 6th. Family members, students, faculty, administrators and board of education members gathered in the auditorium to celebrate the accomplishments of the members of the Class of 2017. Principal Daniel Danbusky opened the ceremony by introducing valedictorian Cybele Laisney and salutatorian Sarah Abodalo. Each received a medal and were presented with a gift from

the PTSA. Both students were also among the 44 seniors who received Board of Education Academic Excellence Awards for reaching the highest level of academic success and being in the top 10 percent of the Class of 2017. Board members congratulated each of these students and handed them a certificate. Approximately 82 scholarships were presented to many of the deserving students. Seniors who will be attending military colleges were formally offered their invitation into their programs. This included students joining the United States Coast Guard, the United States Merchant

Marine Academy and the United States Naval Academy. S c h o l a r s h i p s were presented by Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer, administrators, faculty, community members and organizations to those who embodied what the scholarship stood for. Scholarships ranged from $200 to $5,000. Veterans Program Meeting Schedule Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the upcoming meeting schedule for the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Program. The Program, which is overseen by the Suffolk County Veterans’ Service Agency and Suffolk County United Veterans, is designed to serve veterans, active duty, reserve and National Guard troops suffering from PTSD and other adjustment conditions. All veterans, regardless of discharge status, are welcome to attend, and no DD Form 214 is required to participate. “As a veteran, Iunderstand the importance of having a strong support system at home when you begin the transition back into civilian life,” said County Executive Bellone. “I encourage any veterans to attend this important

program that has made a positive impact for veterans in Suffolk County and across the state. Suffolk County Veterans Services Agency Director, Thomas Ronayne said, “The Joseph Dwyer Program has proven to be an excellent fit within the veterans community. Complimented by the many supportive services available through the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency, and our partner, the Association for Mental Health and Wellness, we are seeing realresults for veterans and their families.” The Joseph P. Dwyer Peer to Peer Program provides safe, confidential, supportive and educational opportunities for veterans who have faced challenges in their post-service transition. The Program allows veterans to meet with other veterans in

support of their regaining of personal resilience and direction. Since its inception in 2012, over 10,000 veterans have participated in the Joseph P. Dwyer Program countywide – sharing their experiences with fellow veterans and allowing the healing process to begin. Meetings of the Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Project will take place weekly as shown below.
