Amid the music and their memories, more than 1,400 cancer survivors, their families and other loved ones gathered Saturday to celebrate the Northwell Health Cancer Institute’s 12th annual Don Monti Cancer Survivors’ Day, held outside the Monter Cancer Center in Lake Success, NY. The day of celebration, made possible through the generosity of the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation, included patients from 12 Northwell hospitals that collectively treat more than 16,000 new cancer patients every year – North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park, Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, LIJ Forest Hills, LIJ Valley Stream, and Huntington, Plainview Glen Cove and Staten Island University hospitals. The keynote speaker was Carmen Marc Valvo, an internationally known fashion designer and a colon cancer survivor. It was in 2003 that Mr. Valvo realized that something was wrong. In his late forties at the time, he was just shy of the recommended age of 50 to begin colorectal cancer screening. However, Mr. Valvo said he listened to his body and insisted on having a colonoscopy, a decision that may have saved his life. His doctors found a large tumor inside his colon, and Mr. Valvo underwent surgery. Now a well-known advocate for colon cancer awareness and funding for research, Mr. Valvo credits journalist Katie Couric, former co-host of NBC-TV’s Today Show,

Following a two-year treatment regimen of spinal taps, infusions and bone marrow biopsies recommended by Northwell Cancer Institute oncologist Jonathan Kolitz, MD, Dr. Thomas was declared cancerfree in 2014. In what she describes “as nothing short of a miracle,” she finished medical school in 2013, and completed her pediatric residency at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in 2017. “And, to top it off, “said Dr. Thomas, “and probably best of all - my daughter, Abigail Sarah Thomas, was born on October 25, 2017. The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. Services include a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for youth and adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions, providing people, along with our U.S. Veterans, with opportunities to heal and work toward their recovery. Everyone possesses their own unique worth and individuality, and MHAW does a great job providing treatment and services that focus on goals and aspirations specific to each individual person. Volunteer Training Breast cancer survivors are encouraged to apply and train to become volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Training will be held at Adelphi University in Garden City, starting Tuesday, September 11th. “We have nearly 100 trained volunteers,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the program. Rutter says that volunteers help the organization in many

different ways. “Some speak in the community about their personal experiences, others help by doing fundraising, community outreach, office work, educational presentations, or respond to callers throughout New York State on our hotline,” she says. Because the hotline volunteers have had breast cancer, it helps them to understand what it is like to receive a breast cancer

diagnosis and the needed treatment that will follow. “When our volunteers answer a hotline call the caller knows that the person they are speaking to has walked in their shoes and understands what they are going through,” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, the coordinator of volunteers. Ms. Rubenstein saysit is also reassuring for the caller to know that not only has the volunteer

Translating These Principles to Your Everyday Life Customer: Never forget that you are the customer, and if not treated with the respect that you deserve, you should stop dealing with them. Start buying with a firm that greatly appreciates your business. Product: In this case, you are the product. If you are in the job market, don’t forget that (as in business) you are competing with other prospects. So, what factors make you stand out from all the rest? Even in purely social situations, do you make friends easily and keep them for a long time? (I call that a friendship index.) Price: Back to the job market: What are your salary requirements in relation to the position being offered? Are you sure that it’s realistic? If not, can you accept a lesser amount? In effect, what are you really worth? Promotion: How are you promoting yourself? Are you making the best appearance possible with neatly pressed and presentable clothing? What about your resume - has it been prepared by a professional writer? Place: Is the position being offered in reasonable proximity to your house or

apartment? If not, do you have alternate ways to get there? Uncontrollable Variables: Think hard on this one. To the best of your knowledge, is there anything in your world that could get in the way of your planned progress? If so, is there any way around this potential obstacle? Summary: You have learned about the Marketing Mix, the tool that most companies use to actively compete in the market. We have translated those principles into your world and outlined how you might use these to get ahead in the world of business and your personal life. To gain the most of this exercise, think carefully about each principle and how it applies to you. Are you interested? If so, move forward and read on... Regardless of company size, companies make use of the Marketing Mix. This consists of the four marketing activities - product, price, promotion and distribution - that the firm can control to achieve assigned goals within a marketing environment. To fully understand this, please draw three circles on a piece of paper. In the first inner circle, write the word “Customer.” Outside the circle, draw a larger one and, in four equal parts, write the words “Product,” “Price,” “Promotion” and “Place” (also known as Place Utility.) Lastly, draw a third circle outside of the one with four equal parts and label this one “Uncontrollable Variables.” Following is an explanation of each one: Customer: The customer is at the center (or heart) of the circle, since companies must understand that the customer is at the center of all activities carried out by them. Once a company forgets that, they will eventually go out of business. Product: (Note: all of the four P’s are called “controllable variables” since every company

As the 2017-2018 school year is wrapping up, the Elwood Union Free School District held a special reception for all staff members who were awarded tenure, as well as this years’ retirees and 25-year employees, at the board of education Meeting on June 7th. Administrators, faculty members and loved ones filled the middle school auditorium for the commendations of these special members of the Elwood community. “Each and every person being celebrated tonight has been such an integral part of making the Elwood community what it is,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, as he opened the meeting. Teachers receiving

tenure were recognized first, each by the principal of their corresponding school. These teachers included Lori Fornaro, Adrienne Nasser and Carolyn Pollina. Retiring staff and faculty members were commended for dedicating their lives to educating students, and for never losing sight of each child individually. Those recognized were Lauren Buchholz, Laura Fisher, Jane Geng, Sharon Gosman, Laura Irace, Kristine Kalinowski, Timothy Kenyon, Sandra Krueger, Sean McGinty, Patricia Pascarella, Martha Simpson, Nancy Schwier and Donna Verton. Academy of IT Northport High School recognized 33 students from the class of 2018 graduating with Academy of IT (AIOT) certificates on May 22nd. The Academy of Information Technology (AOIT) is an interdisciplinary program recognized nationwide that prepares students for a career in Information Technology. It’s designed for students interested in the areas of computer science, video editing, web design, programming, computer networking and computer security and forensics. In addition, the Northport AOIT coordinates an intern program for students entering 12th grade, further adding to their preparation for the modern digital workplace. The ceremony included a keynote presentation by AOIT alumnus Steven Dragone, Class of 2008, who is now working as Associate Director of Operations in the office of undergraduate admission at Hofstra University, and Mr. Karan Sikka, a software engineer at Google. High School Heroes Fifty Northport High School DECA students participated in a High School Heroes event at Norwood Elementary School on May 24th. In preparation for the event, business students in grades 10-12 were trained by a Junior Achievement representative in order to act as “Teacher for a Day” to students in grades 1-5. Junior Achievement USA is

a nationwide organization that is dedicated to providing students the knowledge and skills they need to own to be plan for and be successful in their future through smart academic and economic choices. In order to provide a basic overview of the business world to younger students, Junior Achievement lessons are delivered in a one-day

event. The day’s lessons focused on economic basics, how communities work and more. In addition to covering the basics of economy, the program seeks to provide positive role models for younger children and to foster school-to-school connections.

Birthday Wishes Fifth-graders at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District spent time creating goodie bags for Birthday Wishes, an organization that helps provide the joy of a birthday party for homeless children, on June 6th. In an effort to make a small difference in the lives of children who don’t have homes, students from Robyn Weber and

Dr. Gervaise Jordan’s fifthgrade classes each brought in something fun to donate to help a child in need experience the joy of a birthday party. Each item brought was required to be enough for 24 goodie bags, and each group was made up of seven students. Within groups, students created an assembly linelike system, rotating bags around the desk and stuffing one of every item

into each. The students had fun working together for this cause, and completed the task speedily. “It’s a great organization that makes it really easy for anyone to get involved,” said Ms. Weber, “and it’s always important to teach kids how to give of themselves to others who aren’t as privileged as they are.”

Sixth-grade students from Northport and East Northport Middle School visited Touro Law Center to present their semesterlong projects entitled “Project Citizen” to Suffolk County Legislator Monica Martinez on May 30th. These students are a part of the schools’ “Investigate” program, which is comprised of about 20 students across both middle schools, and works on enforcing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills in students who show an aptitude for them. For this project in

particular, students in the program first identified an issue of public policy in their community that was of concern to them. Each student then researched their chosen problem, interviewing community members who could assist them in learning more about the issue, as well as identified potential solutions by way of letter writing, emails and phone calls. Examples of problems identified by the students included Long Island’s deer population, stranger danger, parking issues at Northport harbor and deforestation.

Creating an Easier Transition

In addition to help from program facilitators Brianne Furstein and Fran Bertos, Northport High School law teacher David Scott also guided students in their research. Legislator Martinez and the panel were impressed with the hard work and dedication Northport-East Northport students showed in this project. “It was incredible to watch these students begin to feel empowered to make changes in their community,” said Ms. Furstein.

On June 7th, rising juniors and seniors from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School visited Elwood Middle School to meet their “Freshman Buddies.” At the end of each middle schooler’s career, they’re assigned a volunteer upperclassman “buddy” from the high school who serves as their role model, guide and friend to help the transition to high school be as smooth as possible. Throughout the year, buddies check in with their freshmen and address different themes at meetings, such as time management and getting

involved. High school principal Carisa Burzynski introduced herself to the eighth-graders and assured them that transition to John Glenn would be made easier with their buddies as a resource. “Each leader is of the best students John Glenn has to offer,” said Mrs. Burzynski. “They were selected because of their character and leadership skills, and they will do their very best to help you navigate through this this new season!” Once each eighth-grader found their assigned group

and buddies, students formed circles outside. Groups played ice-breaking games, inquired about different aspects of high school, exchanged contact information and more. Many of the middle schoolers asked the upperclassmen if they had been nervous going into high school, but the buddies encouraged them positively. “It’s not as hard as you’d think,” said Shannon, an upperclassmen volunteer. “You’ll get used to the change really quickly.”

In celebration of World Oceans Day, kindergartners at Harley Avenue Elementary in the Elwood Union Free School District had the opportunity to experience marine creatures in class on June 8th. A representative from the Cornell Cooperative Extensions of Suffolk County brought the beach to the classroom through

the program’s Seashore Safari. Students were given hands on experience with local marine life, and taught fun facts about each creature. Some of the animals included hermit crabs, sea stars and spider crabs. Students were advised to treat each creature with respect — and were even given some tips to get the creatures feeling more comfortable,

such as humming a single tone to get mud snails to come out of their shells. Students learned the difference between salt and fresh water, why hermit crabs are different than spider crabs, and more. Students had fun learning and interacting with the sea creatures and celebrating World Ocean’s Day!

Master of Words Two teams representing Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently earned the highest honors in the 2017-2018 WordMasters Challenge. This challenge is a national vocabulary competition that nearly 150,000 students participate in annually. In addition, fifthgrader Amelia Freiberger also earned individual Highest Honors in the overall competition with a cumulative score of 58 out of a possible 60 points. Highest Honors

are reserved for students who place among the top 10-15 students in their division. More than 18,000 fifth grade students participated. Overall the TJL fourth graders placed third nationally among 293 schools in the overall competition with a cumulative score of 558 points out of a possible 600 for the 2017-2018 school year. The fifth-graders finished the year in fifth place, out of more than 315 teams, with a total of 547 points. The following students finished with high honors:

Field of Flags the donations of school and community members towards the Christopher G. Scherer Memorial, which helps purchase service dogs for veterans. Since this event’s inception, Northport Middle has helped fund 11 service dogs. This organization was founded in loving memory of Christopher Scherer, who as a child attended Northport Middle School.

Master Class

On Saturday, June 2nd, Vijay Seshadri conducted a sold-out Master Class in Poetry Writing for Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA). Seshadri delivered a 40-minute lecture and worked interactively with the participants and their own poetry. The threehour class went an hour over schedule. On Saturday evening, Seshadri offered an evening reading of his poetry, and was joined by poet John Barr, WWBA 2013 Champion of Literacy, and both poets offered a book signing. Seshadri was then presented with a plaque recognizing him as WWBA 2018 Poet-in-Residence. The master class and reading were part of WWBA’s annual weekendlong Birthday Celebration in commemoration of Walt Whitman’s 199th birthday. Poet, essayist, and critic Vijay Seshadri was born in Bangalore, India, and came to the US at the age of five. He earned a BA from Oberlin College and an MFA from Columbia

University. Praised for its elasticity, vivaciousness, and intimacy of tone, Seshadri’s poetry includes elements of Indian mythology and religion. His 2003 poetry collection, The Long Meadow, won the James Laughlin Award and his third collection, 3 Sections (2013), won the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. Seshadri has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the NEA, and the Guggenheim Foundation, and has been awarded The Paris Review’s Bernard F. Conners Long Poem Prize and the MacDowell Colony’s Fellowship for Distinguished Poetic Achievement. He has worked as an editor at the New Yorker and taught at Bennington College. Currently, he teaches undergraduate writing courses at Sarah Lawrence College as well as directs the graduate non-fiction writing program. John Barr was the founding president of the Poetry Foundation, publisher

of Poetry magazine. During the decade of his tenure, the Foundation used a major financial gift from philanthropist Ruth Lilly to increase the annual outreach of its programs from 10,000 to over 20 million readers, viewers and listeners. In 2013, he received the Champion of Literacy Award from WWBA. Barr was born in Omaha, graduated from Harvard College on a Navy scholarship and served for five years on destroyers, including three tours to Vietnam. During a 30year career as investment banker, he was a managing director at Morgan Stanley and founded three startups. He served for many years on the boards of Yaddo, the Poetry Society of America, and Bennington College, the latter two as Board Chairman. His poems have been published in nine collections over the past 30 years. His new book, Dante in China, is forthcoming from Red Hen Press this summer.

H u n t i n g t o n Councilwoman Joan Cergol led a dedicated group of volunteers June 9 who spruced up Centerport Beach and planted decorative flowers around the Senior Beach House there. After receiving instructions from Lars Olsen of the Town’s Maritime Services Department and being thanked by Councilwoman Cergol for their participation, the volunteers planted an array of jumbo antiqua orange and yellow marigolds and dreamland mix petunias around the periphery of

the beach house, which is one of the more popular attractions at the busy Centerport Beach. Others, plastic garbage bags in hand, picked up litter around the property, which includes the beach, a playground, tennis and volleyball courts and barbecue facilities. “These dedicated volunteers enjoy what they are doing, pitching in to help make Centerport Beach more enjoyable for all,” Councilwoman Cergol said. “I was happy to join them in the plantings and in helping to keep the beach attractive as the season begins. Thank you

to all the volunteers who so eagerly donate their time and their labor.” Counclwoman Cergol also thanked Jonny D’s Pizza of Greenlawn and Jimmy’s Pizza of Centerport for donating pizza for the volunteers. Councilwoman Cergol is sponsoring a similar cleanup at Hobart Beach on Saturday July 14th, from 10 a.m. to noon. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

PCLI Awards Presented The Press Club of Long Island hosted its annual journalism awards at a dinner at Woodbury Country Club on Thursday, June 7th. The latest inductees in the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame and winner of the Robert W. Greene Public Service Award were honored at the dinner. The highest individual honor bestowed by the press club is induction to the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees were Harvey Aronson, Brian Donovan and Carol Pack. Aronson was a writer, editor and writing coach at Newsday for more than 40 years. Today he is a lecturer at Stony Brook University. Donovan was a longtime investigative reporter at Newsday who has won numerous awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes. Pack is being inducted into the PCLI Contributor’s Wing of the Hall for her work with PCLI and the Society

of Professional Journalists. She is a former PCLI president. The PCLI board chose Newsday for the largemarket Robert W. Greene Public Service Award for an unprecedented database investigation led by reporter Matt Clark, who analyzed more than 60 million rows of data, including 2.5 million tax bills, to reveal deep and discriminatory flaws in the dramatic overhaul of Nassau County’s tax assessment system. This year marks the debut of a small-market Robert W. Greene Public Service Award. The Long Beach Herald was selected for its multi-part series chronicling the city five years after Superstorm Sandy. The Independent/East Hampton Media Group was named best community weekly newspaper by the PCLI board, while Port Washington Magazine was selected as best magazine. The Delphian, the

Of Energy and Evolution “The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” ~ Aristotle They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are

genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as

who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.
