Thirty-eight Northport High School seniors recently completed the intensive International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, which only approximately 80,000 graduates world-wide complete each year. Diploma recipients were recognized at a special ceremony on May 30. This two-year program, created in the 1960’s to promote inquisitive internationallyminded students, requires students to complete six different intense courses that require not only learning the content, but developing an in-depth understanding and appreciation for each subject area. “The amount of work and dedication required to be successful in this program is unlike that of any other high school program,” said program coordinator Wayne Jensen, “and each student rose to the occasion — becoming remarkable thinkers who actively seek opportunities for independent learning and using their skills to accomplish the incredible.”

Organics Today Farm is a small organic farm is East Islip, which grows non GMO organic produce that you can trust! Their farmstand is open to the public every day with fresh picked organic produce! There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment. New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for

Portable Oxygen For The Way You Want to Live
In a belated celebration of Earth Day, Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District celebrated “Green Week” from April 29 to May 3. Throughout the week, students spent time reflecting on ways to “go green” for the planet and actively helping the environment by bringing in waste-free lunches and snacks. Each morning ways to
preserve the environment were read over the morning announcements, and throughout the day, in-class lessons included “going green” activities. Students were reminded each day that together, they can make a difference by doing things such as recycling, picking up litter and taking shorter showers. Students also made paper dolls and connected them, hand by hand, throughout

the school, to show their collaborative efforts for the environment. At the end of the week, the school came together to celebrate the week’s success with an Earth Day sing along. “The Earth is the only planet we’ve got,” said Alex, a first grader in Ms. Melissa Owen’s class. “There’s nowhere else for us to go if it gets too dirty or polluted…so we have to take good care of it!”
A team of programming students from Northport High School finished fifth out of 47 teams at Saint Joseph’s annual Programing Competition on May 22. Students James Connor, Elliot Macolino
and Mario Lanzilotta solved all seven of the competition’s problems correctly with precision and efficiency. “These three students persist in problem solving and genuinely enjoy

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently joined the family, friends and fellow troop members of Huntington Station resident Jacob Levinsky to witness, honor and recognize him for earning the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, the highest-recognized achievement bestowed by the Boy Scouts of America to its members. Mr. Levinsky’s Court of Honor was held at the Huntington Community First Aid Squad on May 29 where he received many accolades for his distinction, including a Proclamation from Legislator Donnelly. For his Eagle Scout project Mr. Levinsky created a training video for prospective emergency medical dispatchers. The video incorporates several critical areas of instruction in the Huntington Community First Aid Squad dispatch training manual including answering calls, radio and code communications and data entry. “I applaud Mr. Levinsky on earning the rank of Eagle Scout and for his excellent, innovative and important project,” said Legislator Donnelly. “He has demonstrated leadership, character and a true commitment to community. I know his family is rightfully very proud of him and it is an honor to join them in recognizing and thanking him for all that he has done, and I know will continue to do, for the community.”

At Elwood Union Free School District’s March Board of Education meeting, two outstanding groups of students were recognized for their recent academic accomplishments, along with two outstanding Elwood Middle staff members who jumped into action, while showing such compassion, for a student in a recent moment of crisis. A group of ElwoodJohn H. Glenn research students were commended for receiving the “Best Presenters” award at the Northwell HospitalFeinstein Institute’s annual Medical Marvels Competition. The team, advised by Dr. Arnold
Kamhi, included Sasha Jamal, Julia Mady-Aguiar, Devin Lee, Rithika Narayan, Brennan Finnegan and Jake Haddad, and each student was presented with a certificate from the board for this accomplishment. John Glenn’s Mock Trial team, also known as Knight Court, was recognized by the board for making it to Suffolk County’s “Elite Eight” round of the New York State Mock Trial Tournament. Additionally, along with students being commended for their incessant efforts to honing their advocacy skills, team adviser Ms. Megan Geiser was honored for her dedication to the team and helping them reach the “Elite Eight” for the past
four years in a row. Lastly, Elwood Middle School Assistant Principal Dawn Valle and nurse Lisa McNamara were commended for expertly and compassionately taking care of a student in a moment of crisis. “What an honor it is to work alongside professionals who treat Elwood’s children with the same love, dignity, and support they would give their own children,” said middle school principal Dr. Christina Sapienza as she presented them to the board. “We are so lucky to have professionals like them protecting and loving the students of our middle school.”
Outstanding Student-Athletes Seventeen of Harborfields High Schools’ outstanding studentathletes signed their national letters of intent on May 29. A special breakfast was held to celebrate the students’ commitment to play sports at a collegiate level, an accomplishment less than 2% of high school seniors reach nationwide. Families, coaches, and administration were in attendance to honor these impressive studentathletes. Director of Athletics John Valente congratulated students on their excellence in their chosen sport. “You each have been recognized for the dedication and hard

Recently, a group of fifth graders from Thomas J. Lahey in the Harborfields Central School District who participate in the L.E.A.P. program placed third nationally in the 2018-19 WordMasters competition, a national vocabulary competition for students in grades
3-8 that encourages growth in vocabulary and verbal reasoning, with a cumulative score of 581 points out of a possible 600. A group of fourth graders in the L.E.A.P program finished in the top 10 of the WordMasters competition as well. Additionally, fifth grader
Jackson Dunham also earned individual highest honors in the overall competition with a perfect score in all three meets. The highest honors are reserved for students who place among the top 10-15 students in their division nationally.
