Tripping Down Memory Lane By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently attended my old dance studio’s annual recital, where I had the opportunity to watch the entire show from the comfort of the audience for only the second year, after 20 years of “gracing” the stage myself. I use that term lightly, as there were quite a number of cringeworthy moments during those two decades of dance. How could there not be? There was the time I froze midway through a number, right as I was dead center, absolutely perplexed as to what the next step might be. Dozens of others twirled and leapt around me, as I stood there, horrified. Talk about the world seeming to move in slow motion around you. All in all, it was probably a five-second pause; but it sure seemed like an eternity until the choreography (thankfully) kicked back in.
Then there was the year I was selected to sit atop another dancer’s shoulders, while he carried me clear across the stage. Oh, and did I mention we were dressed in circus attire? The fact was, we had rehearsed the lift and the dynamics associated with balancing in such a precarious position for weeks on end. However, we had failed to account for the silky, slippery material the costumes would be made of. You can imagine the rest. I believe there exists a photo of the scene, with me desperately clinging onto the “ringmaster’s” hat for dear life with a huge, frozen, petrified grin, silently willing the stage to shrink so that we could make it into the wings immediately. Ah, memories… And then there was the ultimate classic. My first year, six years old. Unfamiliar with the protocol of lining up before
my number, how much time to allow, etc., my mother and I found ourselves in the dressing room as the first few notes of “Somewhere Out There” filtered through the doorway. My song! I’ll leave you with this image: A dozen or so girls tiptoeing in their tutus to the music when, out of nowhere, comes another tiny ballerina, arms flailing, flying across the stage to take her position among the class. Yup. I always did know how to make an entrance. After 20 years, I took my final curtain call. But the desire to dance remains; the amazing feeling you get from being on stage – one that you would only know if you have had the privilege of being there – still lingers on, even as I watched the next generation of dancers take their turns in the spotlight. May they have as many fond memories as I do (and a few bloopers too!).

Meet Your Neighbor! It all began back in 1976. Our country was going through a terrible recession. Our local economy was devastated. At this time, founder Vincent Costello was forced to close his air conditioning and heating contracting business. Looking for a means to support his wife and 10 children, Vinnie stumbled upon a business opportunity, a retail hardware store. Originally opened 1973, it was a small, neglected, under-stocked store of barely over 2,000 square feet located in Deer Park. With no previous retail experience and no other options, Vinnie courageously embarked on a journey that few would ever have dared. Sales were dismal and the store was in desperate need of attention. He worked every day for 5 years and managed to make the store profitable. While most would have been satisfied with this miraculous feat, Vinnie was determined to grow beyond that one small store. By refinancing his home, he opened a second location in 1982. This 5,000 square foot industrial store was also located in Deer Park, on the other side of town.
In 1988, another opportunity arose. A shopping center was being constructed in the little-known town of Nesconset. It wasn’t the most populated area, but Vinnie had lived there for over ten years and he thought that the residents of Nesconset would respond well to a neighborhood hardware store. Did they ever! The 4,000 square foot store was an instant success, managing to be profitable from the day it opened. Over the next four years, the success of that store helped fuel the expansion of the company to larger stores in Farmingdale and Central Islip. During those early growing years, his children worked in the business and contributed to its success. Their dad taught them the importance of taking care of the customers. “Treat them like family,” he would say. He taught them how to solve their problems and how to learn from them. Most importantly, he taught them that the most sacred bond between them and their customers is trust. In 2001, with Vinnie’s encouragement and guidance, six of his children opened a 25,000 square foot store

in Bellmore. This store was the size of all of the other locations combined - it was huge! It seemed impossible to find enough products to fill it. It took some time, but eventually they had a successful home center. This hardware/home center concept has continued over the past nine years in Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, Bethpage, New Hyde Park, Island Park, Centereach, West Islip, North Massapequa, Northport, West Babylon, Garden City Park, Smithtown, East Islip, Rocky Point, Great Neck and Copiague. looking to construct an affordable senior housing development. The Town purchased an eight-acre parcel a few miles away from the BAPS; that parcel is to become Sweet Hollow Park. The Town transferred the development rights for the five of those acres that will be used as passive parkland to the privately-owned 18-acre site on Deshon Drive and approved a zoning change that allowed clustering of the allowed housing on 13 of the acres. Those acres are the site of the underconstruction, 261-unit community, The Club at Melville. The remaining five acres was sold to BAPS for the temple. Supervisor Petrone, in brief remarks, traced the history of how he and Council Members
Cuthbertson and Berland had worked with the BAPS to find an appropriate site and he again welcomed the BAPS to Huntington. Girish Patel, one of the BAPS leaders instrumental in the project, noted that the temple will have facilities that will be open to the entire community, including meeting rooms and a gymnasium. Last October, BAPS began the construction project with a ceremony laying sacred stones on the site. The stones, which were to be placed in the foundation, had been sanctified and blessed by a swami in India before being sent to Melville. Construction of the temple is expected to last 12 months.
Starflower Experiences Starflower Experiences will be offering Earthkeepers as a summer camp, now based at Manor Farm in the Elwood area of Huntington. Ten and eleven year-olds will visit Mama Nature’s Munch Room, meet a “Spec,” dig up a buried time capsule and earn 4 keys to help them live in harmony with the earth and understand how the systems of life on earth operate. The keys open real locks on boxes containing secrets only Earthkeepers know. If you like being outdoors and care about our fragile planet, then you should become an Earthkeeper! This incredibly dynamic, fun program helps young people learn about and
care for the earth. You will also get a taste of exploring right there in Berkeley Jackson County Park. This initial week of Earthkeepers will be followed by a week of Earth Explorers, open only to those youngsters registering for Earthkeepers, Earthkeepers from past years and students who have participated in the Rangers of the Earth program. During this week, participants will have a chance to really explore the parks near Manor Farm and take trips to other places to experience a different landscape. Starflower Experiences is a not-for-profit educational organization with a
reputation for conducting exciting participatory environmental experiences for many local schools. The Earthkeepers program was developed by the Institute for Earth Education and is currently being run at sites across the U.S., Canada, Britain, Cyprus, Finland, The Netherlands, Australia and Japan. Starflower experiences is pleased to make this internationally renowned program available to local youngsters. Youngsters must currently be in 4th or 5th grade. Joining The Ranks Of The Alumni
With every passing day, I become more aware of my surroundings. I try to pick up on the fleeting aspects of life. From the beginning of my high school career, people told me that the four years would be gone before I knew it. They made sure that I was aware that high school is the best time of one’s life. From the first moment I walked into St. John’s, I knew that it would be a place with the power to shape my life. My mannerisms, persona, outlook and mentality have all been influenced by SJB. Each year, on Alumni Career Day, I would
stare in awe at the past graduates, and commend their accomplishments. Now, as a graduate, I am following in their footsteps and going out into the world. Some of my peers will go on to do big things. While I was sitting in that auditorium of 397 other teens, I couldn’t help but to speculate on which kid would become the author. Who would become the politician? Undoubtably, there are movers and shakers within my graduating class. I can only hope that I am one of them. There is no telling what the members of my class will do with their
lives. As I stood beside them on that morning when we moved our tassels, it became clear that we were in this journey together. I am moving on to Villanova, and we were parting ways. However, I feel as though I will be crossing paths with many of my classmates in the future. As an official St. John’s Alumni, I have joined the ranks of those who presented on Career Day. One day, many years from now, I hope to stand alongside my classmates yet again, bragging about my accomplishments, and hearing what my friends have done with their lives.

Berland participated Sunday, June 8th, in the official groundbreaking for the temple the Hindu organization Bochasanwasi Shree Akshar PurushottamNortheast (BAPS) is building on Deshon Drive. Senator John Flanagan recently honored Filomena Piscitelli of Greenlawn as his 2014 Woman of Distinction. As part of the honor, Senator Flanagan welcomed Mrs. Piscitelli to Albany to take part in a special Senate Women of Distinction ceremony. Born in Italy, Mrs. Piscitelli and her late husband came over to America in 1963 to start a new life for their family. In 1966, she successfully became a citizen of the United States of America while taking care of her two children and helping her husband open Mario’s Shoe Repair in Greenlawn. While raising her family, Mrs. Piscitelli spent nights learning English and entered the workforce in 1979 when she became an assistant cook at Harborfields High School.
For almost thirty-five years, she has helped feed, nurture and bring joy to tens of thousands of school children. Cooking, bringing in her own food and now running the entire kitchen, she has made the school kitchen feel like home. Now the head of the kitchen at the school, she is adored by many students, teachers and school officials. Filomena is representative of many New York women who have worked hard all their life in order to help those around them. A selfless and compassionate woman, she has impacted the lives of numerous students at Harborfields High School simply by providing students with a delicious meal and a warm smile. “Filomena is a great example of the impact

Suffolk County Community College student/athletes were honored one June 5th when more than threedozen were recognized for their on-field skills as well as team spirit, sportsmanship, support of fellow athletes and academic achievement. Suffolk’s Athletic Director Kevin Foley said that this year’s men’s national champion in the pole vault, Josiah Hoshyla had a perfect 4.0 grade point average and first team AllAmerican and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic All-American, baseball player Travis George scored perfectly as well. Foley said that Tori Thompson of the Women’s Track Team won three national championships this year while maintaining a 3.1 GPA. Foley added that Suffolk placed a total of seven student athletes on the NJCAA Academic AllAmerican Team – four of the students had a 3.8 GPA or better. Individual team awards were distributed for team Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Coach’s Awards to individuals who were not only skilled in their respective sports, but also exhibited leadership qualities that go above and beyond. Additionally, one athlete was singled out for a new prestigious award – The Gene Farry Award. The honor is named after former Suffolk Men’s Head Basketball and Baseball Coach as well as Athletic Director Gene Farry and awarded to the student athlete who best embodies the qualities and characteristics of team spirit, leadership, commitment and excellence. Galvin Biggs of Coram, a track team member and Coach’s Award recipient, was presented with the Gene Farry Award.

It took so many years. To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears. For each treasured trinket is a sweet memory Of her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three. A sweet blue baby blanket from her first baby born. It may be frayed and tattered and just a little torn. She does not want to part with it for any price, you see. Though now adult, he’ll be her baby for eternity. So now she clings to each old thing feeling quite forlorn. For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn.

You can’t keep all these things they tell her - there just isn’t that much room. The new place will be better for you, Her heart fills with dread and gloom. Some photos in an album show her late husband in his youth, A letter to the tooth fairy and the third baby’s first little tooth. Roses pressed in a book to preserve their bloom, She remembers as a gift from her loving groom. She found things she had forgotten and didn’t know she had. Some things made her feel good; others made her sad. The clay handprint ashtray someone made in camp The high school woodshop project that had become a lamp. She found handmade greeting cards “To my Mommy and my Dad.” If this was better for her, why did it feel so bad? This was her life piled up outside she wanted to declare. She was afraid of all the changes and moving now elsewhere. Don’t make me feel like I’m a problem - I’m your mother after all. Don’t be impatient with me or bothered when I call. She wanted them to know her feelings and to let her know they care. Please listen to me - my memories I need to share!

Summer Astronomy Program The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium will offer a new summer astronomy program for young adults, ages 16-22. The program will be led by Vanderbilt science educators Tom Rico and Roger Ledgister, who also work with Discovering the Universe, the Museum’s mobile science and astronomy classroom that visits Long Island schools. The program, Young Adult Stellar Discussions, will be offered Tuesday evenings 7:30 to 10 p.m., from July 8th through August 26th, at the Planetarium. Fee: $10 per session with advanced,
on-line registration (www. vanderbiltmuseum.org), or $15 at the door. Participants will take part in “extended, interactive star talks” with Rico and Ledgister in the Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium. Questions and discussion will be encouraged. “We’ll look at the galactic neighborhood visible to us on Long Island at this time of year,” Rico said. In-depth discussions will include naming various planets, stars, and constellations, their distance from Earth, size, magnitude, and the possibility of such stars hosting exoplanets.
Mars, Saturn and the Moon should all be visible through the telescope in the Vanderbilt Observatory during July, Rico said, with the August focus on lunar and stellar observations. Schedule: • 7:30 - 8:15 p.m. Planetarium star talk • 8:15 - 8:45 p.m. - Pizza and soda in garden outside Planetarium • 8:45 - 9:45 p.m. Outside observations of the night sky. In an effort to combine classroom knowledge, technology skills and service to the community, students at Elwood Middle School designed and built toys in their technology education classes using some of the latest design hardware available. They then donated their creations to the Developmental Disabilities Institute in Huntington for use in their classrooms. In order to create
the toys, each class, under the direction of technology teacher Matt McGuire, first researched and chose a specific toy to manufacture. After making their selections, the students followed a design process utilizing computer-aided design programs to develop and tweak the unique games to their exact liking. Students designed many different toys, ranging from foosball and Nok
Hockey tables to ring toss games and puzzles. Once their designs were finalized, the classes were able to use a computer numerically controlled router, provided through grant funding from the Toshiba America Foundation, to cut out the finished products. Additional material funding for the project was supplied through donations from Marjam Supply Company.
Falls Prevention Program community, located at 50 Hauppauge Road in Commack, will host Tai Chi: Moving For Better Balance. This 12-week course is specially designed for seniors, combining low-impact postures and movements with stretching and breathing exercises, all geared toward reducing participants’ fall risk. The program will meet

As hurricane season begins, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone encourages all Town residents to obtain a copy of the 2014 edition of the Town’s Hurricane Preparedness Handbook, which is now available in printed or electronic form. “We want you - whether you are a resident or a business, an individual or a large family - to be ready for any weather emergency,” Supervisor Petrone said in his introductory message. “Take the time now to read this booklet, follow its advice and make the preparations so that you, your family, your neighbors and your pets have the best chance of weathering the next storm.” The 16-page handbook
will be available at Town Hall, the Town’s Senior Center and local libraries and fire houses. It can also be viewed or downloaded from the Town’s website, at http://huntingtonny.gov/filestorage/13749/13857/2014hurricanehandbook_single_ page.pdf. The Handbook includes details on what should be included in a family’s hurricane response plan, an emergency supply checklist, suggested contents of a “Go Kit’ in case of an evacuation and tips on pet safety. A page is dedicated to preparedness tips for business owners. The handbook also includes on-line, telephone and electronic media links for obtaining information.
“Whether it is a winter storm, or a nor’easter, or a hurricane, being informed and being prepared for a potential weather event does save lives and protect property,” Supervisor Petrone said. “Go through your check lists. Review your Family Plan. Check your evacuation routes and Go Kits. Sit with your family and your neighbors to discuss various scenarios and your responses. And don’t forget your pets. Did you prepare for them as well?” The Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1st and runs through November 30th. Typically, Long Island is considered most vulnerable in the later part of the season, September and October.

Clara Abbatiello, a dedicated and beloved volunteer in the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities Senior Companion Program, was recently honored by Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro as District 17’s 2014 Senior Citizen of the Year. The Melville resident has been enhancing the lives of developmentally disabled adults at a local day rehabilitation center since 2007. Volunteering between 25-30 hours per week, Ms. Abbatiello
has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to her “friends” at the center. She shares her creative talents and love of arts with the rehabilitation center program participants as she patiently guides them through the special craft activities and takes joy in their completed projects. Ms. Abbatiello accompanies many disabled individuals on weekly “Community Inclusion Trips” to local stores and also joins them on recreational field trips. In addition to her volunteer work as a Senior
Companion, each year Ms. Abbatiello makes hundreds of scarves and other apparel items for Suffolk County Special Olympic athletes who wear the scarves with pride during the games. “Through her selfless acts, Clara Abbatiello has clearly demonstrated her desire and commitment to enhancing and improving the quality of life for some of our most vulnerable residents,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “Simply put, she is a special woman who is extremely well-deserving of this year’s Senior Citizen of the Year Award.”

Leading The Charge Today, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone congratulated Sarah Haiken for her efforts to combat underage drinking and drunk driving at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge. Sarah was 11 when Karen Naclerio-Negrin of Smithtown, a family friend, was killed by a drunk driver. Since then, as a way of remembering Naclerio-Negrin, Sarah has worked tirelessly with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in Huntington Station. MADD is the nation’s largest nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect families from drunk driving and underage drinking. “I applaud the efforts of Sarah as they pertain to advocating on behalf of MADD,” County Executive Steve Bellone said. “I thank her for her leadership on the regional and the national level and know that she serves as a role model for her peers and her elders. I can only hope that my girls grow up to possess similar leadership qualities.” In 2010, when Sarah was 13, she became the youngest person to attend the MADD Inaugural National Teen Influencer Summit in Dallas. She was one of five chosen from teens nominated from around the country and they helped to form the Power of Youth program. Every two years, MADD accepts applications to
create a new panel. Sarah was the only person to return in 2012, and again MADD asked her to apply for next year. Recently the Half Hollow Hills East student helped create a video to encourage more participation in MADD’s Annual Walk Like MADD 5K. The video has
received national attention, and will be distributed or re-created in different states. In 2010, Long Island Press honored Sarah with the Woman of Achievement Award and again was the youngest recipient. Since then, she has been honored with many awards and legislative proclamations for her volunteer work with the MADD organization,
including a Kohl’s Store scholarship. In 2012, Sarah created a program called “Join The MADDness” focused on the dangers of underage drinking or getting into a car with someone who is drunk. The program has been held at Walt Whitman Shops in Huntington Station and at a few fall festivals in 2013. Sarah arranged to have local law enforcement participation and recruited more than 50 youth volunteers to staff the events. She continues to sit on the MADD Teen Influencer National Board, New York State MADD Advisory Board, and this year was asked to join the New York State Governor’s Board for Teen Safe Driving. Richard Mallow, New York State executive director at Mothers Against Drunk Driving, said, “Sarah’s not only the youngest advocate and leader with MADD New York State but the way she goes about implementing and initiating her programs is with a quiet assuredness and excellent leadership. New York State MADD is lucky to have an advocate like Sarah.” Her mother, Cheryl Haiken, who attended with the event with her husband, Jeff, said, “Sarah is not boastful in any way. She is truly an advocate and would much rather others be in the limelight. She’s committed to getting the job done.

parents, along with a commitment by parents, caregivers and children to follow recommended safety guidelines designed to prevent residential drowning and entrapment incidents. “With summer just around the corner, ‘Pool Safely’ is a perfect opportunity to reinforce basic water safety practices for parents, and to instill in children at an early age the importance of following these rules,” said YMCA of LI President and CEO Anne Brigis. “As a national partner with the US CPSC on this
campaign, we encourage all of our members – and all Long Islanders with pools on their property – to take the pledge.” The ‘Pool Safely’ Pledge (http://www.poolsafely. gov/pledge/) asks adults to commit to five water safety steps in and around their pools: • Designate a water watcher every single time children in their care are in or near the water • Make sure children in their care know how to swim • Learn CPR
• Remove or secure ladders in on ground pools when the pool is not in use • Ensure that all pools have a proper fence with a self-closing and self-latching gate, and safe drain covers Children can also sign an online pledge, in which they agree to never swim alone, and to ask their parent for swim lessons. The YMCA of Long Island provides over 22,000 swim lessons annually for all ages, starting as young as 6 months, noted Brigis. “Swimming lessons
provide children with important, potentially lifesaving skills, to keep them safe in pools, on boats, or at the beaches, and they also offer tremendous benefit by providing regular athletic activity and provide a sense of achievement and confidence,” Brigis added. With over 60,000 members, the YMCA of Long Island is the leading local provider of swim lessons and lifeguard instruction, is committed on a daily basis to the safety of all Long Islanders enjoying the water. Volunteerism is a central part of the Citi employee experience, with Citi volunteers regularly engaging in community service yearround Citibank’s Global Community Day spotlights and reinforces a shared commitment among Citi employees, clients, alumni, family and friends around the world to collaborate and dedicate their time and expertise to local community needs, including literacy and education, housing, environmental stewardship, health and human services, and disaster relief. Under the leadership of Pat Edwards, Citi Community Development Long Island Market Manager, volunteers painted and cleaned shelters, painted and replace fences and cleaned up trails at the Blydenburgh
campground, which is used by Boy Scouts and other organizations throughout the year. “I thank Citibank volunteers and IBM Smarter Cities team and colleagues for helping to beautify Blydenburgh Park and devote their time and resources to the residents of Suffolk County,” County Executive Bellone stated. A New Tactic In The War Against Cholesterol There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion
and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to
prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made
up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often referred to as the “good
cholesterol” because of the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream. Anger Management Workshop The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) offers an eight-hour Anger Management Class for adults seeking to learn skills to manage conflict, stress and anger. The course is offered monthly in LICADD’s Mineola office, and complements the agency’s 12-week Anger Management Program that meets in Ronkonkoma on Monday evenings and Mineola on Tuesday evenings. LICADD’s anger management program is
an evidence-based psychoeducational intervention designed to help participants build skills in stress management, interpersonal communication, empathy, conflict resolution, impulse control and emotional intelligence. New participants can expect an assessment by a LICADD Clinical Team member to determine the anger management issues and the reasons that the client seeks anger management help. During the anger
management assessment, the agency assesses for signs or symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, mental health disorders, trauma, physical and sexual abuse, legal involvement, domestic violence, substance abuse and dependence issues. New classes for a one-day session begin on June 21st, July 26th and August 23rd. Clients can choose between the one-time eight-hour course or the 12 sessions that meet weekly. In each, clients have an opportunity to identify
their triggers, and practice practical, effective strategies for processing and controlling their emotions. Individual anger management sessions are offered in cases where a client is uncomfortable in a group setting. Upon completion of the class and/ or course, participants receive a certificate as proof of their progress. “For many clients, anger and the difficulty they experience in dealing with conflict, has threatened their personal and professional
relationships. We want every participant to learn successful coping skills for managing their anger,” explains Anger Management Coordinator Marcie Siciliano, “we provide the education and resources for our clients to deal with stress in healthy ways.” The fees associated with the Anger Management services are minimal and competitive. The assessment fee is $40 and an additional $40 per class each week. For individuals attending the one-day eight-hour session,
