Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District individually read more than thirteen chapter books. Shoes For All, the not for profit agency that collects new and gently worn shoes for those in need in our community recently held a shoe drive at North Shore University Hospital. From May 5th to May 17th, the hospital collected 365 pairs of shoes that will be processed by Shoes For All volunteers, and donated to those in need in our community. “In just 13 days, they collected 365 pairs of shoes...” Said the organization’s founder Dr. Mary Carlson DPM, “It’s great that the community stepped up and I know these families will be thankful.” Dr. Carlson was speaking about the hundreds of families her organization helps each year at one of their many events. Well, it’s happened. comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint. Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time. Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to

fireworks…the options are endless. The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you. Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer. Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

Spring Soiree Models from Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), a leading Long Island based not-for-profit agency devoted to supporting the pursuit of an enviable life for children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities, recently walked the runway in the latest styles as part of ACLD’s 2015 Spring Soiree at The Woodlands in Woodbury. Of the 12 women and six men who strolled the Soiree runway, 14 have developmental disabilities and receive support from

ACLD. “Our individuals and their needs are as unique as the fashions they wear today,” said John J. Genova, Treasurer of ACLD’s Board of Trustees, and one of those who escorted models on the runway. “ACLD’s job is to ensure we meet those needs and be prepared to support their dreams and aspirations for tomorrow.” Nearly 250 people were on-hand to enjoy lunch as the models showed off the latest fashions from Carlisle Collection, Flair Designer Boutique and Men’s Wearhouse. Training Graduate Army Spc. Joo Ho Hong has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. Twelve year old William Connor of Northport has been named a regional winner in the annual Kohls Cares Scholarship Program. One of only eleven regional winners in New York State, the Northport Middle School 6th grader will receive a $1,000 scholarship to be used towards his college education. In 2011 William started Thank A Soldier, with the goal of collecting thank you cards for all the men and women serving in the United States military. “My dad said ‘Thank you’ to two soldiers we passed, and when I asked him why he told me a story where somebody thanked my

Grandpa Connor when he was walking down the street in his uniform,” he explained. “My grandpa remembered that his whole life so my dad always thanks soldiers he sees. And I thought that every soldier should be thanked, so I decided to do it.” With the help of his sister he designed a postcard and persuaded a local UPS store to donate the printing of the cards, then he set up his table at local events such as Northport’s Memorial Day Parade and August Family Nights. He also asked his Cub Scout Pack and his classes to write thank you’s. When he collected enough postcards, he

sent them off through Operation Gratitude as well as through local endeavors, and he plans to continue his project as long as it takes to make sure that every soldier is thanked. And what college is he hoping to attend with his scholarship? “The Culinary Institute of America,” he states. “I want to be a chef. Maybe I’ll even cook for the army and give the soldiers really good gourmet meals.” To send a thank you, like William’s Thank A Soldier facebook page and post your message. Celebrating Field Day To encourage good sportsmanship while celebrating the end of the school year, the physical education departments at Harley Avenue Primary and James H. Boyd Intermediate schools in the Elwood Union Free School District

coordinated individual field day celebrations. Students were divided into district color teams of blue and white and participated in a variety of athletic activities. Throughout the event, students participated in games such as tug o’ war,

an egg balancing exercise, a potato sack race, and also demonstrated their soccer dribbling skills. Along with teachers and parents, students cheered as their team members competed in each event.

Battle Of The Books During the course of the 2014-2015 school year, third-grade students in the ELA LEAP enrichment program at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District individually read more than 13 chapter books. As a culminating activity to test their book knowledge, students participated in a literacy competition called “Battle

of the Books” on May 29th. To prepare for the competition, reading specialists Patricia Bacchi and Donna Robson taught students how to take efficient book notes and shared the types of questions that would be asked during the competition. Divided into seven teams, students worked collaboratively to answer book trivia questions.

To acquire points, students used paddles with book titles to answer questions and had the opportunity to receive additional points for bonus questions and steal points from an opposing team. Following several round of competitive trivia play, team six claimed the title of Battle of the Book champions.

Oldfield Middle School eighth-grader Kelsey Fowle and seventh-grade student Katlin Modica were named winners of the 16th Annual Huntington Youth Writes Contest. The Huntington Youth Writes Contest is an annual writing contest

On Sunday, June 7th, the Northport-East Northport school community celebrated the 56th annual Arts and Music Festival in Northport Village Park. Thousands of student works of art were on display and community members had an opportunity to listen and watch a versatile selection of

student performances. The Norwood Avenue School fifth-grade chorus opened the event by singing the National Anthem, while the NHS dance troupe were first time performers at the event. Engaging acts included the NHS symphony orchestra and symphonic winds, as well as the

opened to students in grades four through 12 who attend school in the town of Huntington. Under the advisement of English teacher Mary-Lynn Karpenske, a small group of middle school students created original writing pieces to enter the contest.

Among more than 1,100 entries, Fowle received second place and a $75 prize for her essay on animal rights and Modica placed third in the short story category for her story “The Creek” and received a cash award of $50.

As part of a crosscurricular research project, Oldfield Middle School eighth-grade students in the Harborfields Central School District paid homage to children of the Holocaust in their ELA and history classes. In partnership, the Oldfield Middle School ELA and history departments coordinated their reading and writing units on the Holocaust. To kick off the study unit, students were shown the movie of the “Paperclip Project,”

a monument for the Holocaust victims created by middle school students from Whitwell, Tennessee. For their project, Harborfields students were asked to research and write a biography of one child who was a victim of the Holocaust. To commemorate each child, eighth-grade students created a garden of vibrant flowers outside the school. During their ELA class, students dedicated the garden to children of the Holocaust

and shared information about the child they researched. In addition, each middle school student created hand-made gifts for their child such as a birthday card, fabric bag, picture frame and toys. “It is a beautiful activity,” said English teacher MaryLynn Karpenske. “If we don’t celebrate the past then its forgotten, so what the students did was bring them back to life today and they are in our memory all day today.”

Big Blue Sea As a culmination to their ocean unit, second-grade students at Washington Drive Primary School hosted an Ocean Museum to showcase their creative art projects and share their knowledge of sea creatures with parents and friends. To kick off the study unit, students learned about various sea creatures and were asked to select one sea animal to research. In the weeks to follow,

students learned about the animal, wrote a report and presented their research to their teacher and classmates. In addition, students created a 3-D model of the sea creature to help visualize and explain characteristics of the animal. During the Ocean Museum, students wore hand-made headbands with a picture of their sea creature, displayed their

projects and prepared a few facts to share about their sea creature. To the parents’ surprise, secondgraders gathered in the center of the room and performed a flash mob dance to the song “Keep the Ocean Clean” by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders. “This is a great way for the students to display all their hard work,” said second-grade teacher Deborah Philips.

objects to accessorize their desk such as a table runner and a vase with flowers. In honor of the celebration, boys wore bow ties, fake mustaches and top hats, while girls wore glittery dresses, shirts and hair clips. In conjunction with their cursive unit, Murphy read the book series “Fancy Nancy” by Jane

O’ Connor as the class read aloud. While reading the book series, secondgraders learned new and sophisticated words, just as the book character Nancy learns “fancy” words, to incorporate into their daily vocabulary. To top off their fancy celebration, students enjoyed parfait ice cream sundaes.

Students at Harborfields High School in the Harborfields Central School District participated in the 17th Annual Long Island Envirothon, an environmental studies competition for high school students based on five subject areas: aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and a current environmental issue. To be eligible for program, students must attend high school in Nassau or Suffolk Counties

and register a team of one to five members. On the day of the competition, students rotated with their teammates between subject stations and answered 25-multiple choice questions. Many of the questions were handson and required students to use equipment, maps or audio-visual devices. In February, students were given an environmental scenario posted on the LIEnvironthon website and prepared a solution

to present to a panel of judges. As a team, students gave their oral presentation on this year’s current environmental issue, urban forestry. In result of their teamwork and presentation, Harborfields team one students comprised of Pamela Best, Shannon Chiang, Shannon Nolan, Katherine Ryan and Arianna Starost were second place Suffolk County winners.

Science Fair Winners The Suffolk County Legislature last week recognized the winners of Brookhaven National Laboratory’s 2015 Elementary School Science Fair. Over 100 Suffolk County schools participate each year, with entrants ranging in age from kindergarten through sixth grade. “I am honored to congratulate these promising young scientists,” said Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “The key to solving some of our greatest challenges lies in science, and I commend Brookhaven National Laboratory for making this investment both in these young people and in our collective future.” Spencer Asofsky, who attends Bay Shore Middle School, was the sixth grade winner. Asofsky, who said he had always been a “picky eater,” wondered whether color affected a person’s perspective on taste. He constructed his experiment by dying lemon-lime seltzer with different food colorings, then asking a sample

of 20 people to describe the flavor tasted. All 20 subjects recorded that the yellow beverage tasted like lemon and green tasted like lime, and 14 recorded that red tasted like cherry and purple tasted like grape. Also of note was that 80 percent of the subjects stated that yellow was their favorite beverage because they believed it tasted like lemon. “We’re really thrilled with Spencer’s performance, creativity and knowledge of the scientific method,” said Donna Bettinelli, the Director of Science at Bay Shore Schools. She accompanied Asofsky and his family to the presentation of his proclamation at the Legislature. Asofsky is the son of Steven and Mary Asofsky and grandson of Madeleine and Paul Boghosian. Other winners of the Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair were as follows: Kindergarten: Justyn Harrison of Middle Island, who attends Charles E. Walters Elementary

School. He is the son of Greg and Kymara Harrison. His project, “Chelsea’s Favorite Treat,” examined whether dogs had a preference in treats. He found that his dog, Chelsea, had a consistent preference for cheesewrapped snacks. First grade: Jennifer Tiskowitz of Rocky Point, who attends Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School. She is the daughter of Terri Dietz and Jon Tiskowitz. Her project, “Keep My Craft Colorful,” tested whether household products could be used to prevent construction paper from fading. Of the substances she tested, Pledge furniture polish was the most effective at preserving color. Second grade: Mark Burns, Jr. of Baiting Hollow, who attends Riley Avenue Elementary School. He is the son of Mark Burns, Sr. and Danielle Burns. His project, “Snow Problem,” sought to find an environmentallyfriendly alternative to salt for use in melting ice. Of the substances he tested,

pickle brine was the best alternative. Third grade: Kelly Bossert of Fort Salonga, who attends Fort Salonga Elementary School. She is the daughter of Carolyn and Marc Bossert. Her project, “Don’t Let It Burn,” tested whether certain trees and shrubs spread fire more quickly than others. She found that while evergreens ignite quickly, deciduous plants take longer to ignite and can be extinguished more quickly.

Fourth grade: Ella Causin of Oakdale, who attends Idle Hour Elementary School. She is the daughter of Richard and Jennifer Causin. Her project, “Slippery Sidewalks,” tested the efficacy of various substances at melting ice. Of the substances she tested, she found rock salt melted ice the most quickly. Fifth grade: Jack Soldano of Miller Place, who attends Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School. He is son of

Cristin and Steven Soldano. His project, “Compost Conundrum,” examined whether composting significantly affected the growth of plants. Although his findings did not make a strong case for the use of compost to stimulate plant growth, he stumbled across several “unexpected discoveries,” including the “resurrection” of a cucumber plant from cucumber seeds in compost.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. is pleased to announce its annual Regatta and Awards dinner which will take place over two days: on June 18th at the Oyster Bay Marine Center and on June 20th at the Sagamore Yacht Club, both in Oyster Bay. Proceeds will benefit services offered by ADRC and help fund local Alzheimer’s research and support. The Regatta events will

begin with The Classics on Thursday, June 18th, 2015 at the Oyster Bay Marine Center, 5 Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay, starting at 5 p.m. Proceeds from this event will benefit both ADRC and Oakcliff Sailing. Non-members of Oakcliff Sailing will have the opportunity to crew on vintage wooden yachts, the oldest one dating back to 1903. In order to participate, non-members must raise a minimum of

$150. The Plastics will race on Saturday, June 20th, beginning at the Sagamore Yacht Club, located at 1 Bay Avenue, Oyster Bay. Boats of any size and skippers of any level of racing experience are invited to take part. Participants must register online prior to the event and present sponsor donations upon arrival. Captains will meet at noon and First Gun of the Pursuit Race will sound

promptly at 1 p.m. Paddling for Poker will also commence the same day. This event is open to all paddle boarders and kayakers, who should meet at 2 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West Avenue, Oyster Bay. Participants paddle to five boats at 3 p.m. to pick up a poker card at each boat. These cards will make up their poker hand. The best hand wins, and will be presented at the Awards Dinner.

Alzheimer’s Regatta & Awards Kayak rentals are available. Those who raise $200 or more will not be charged for a two-hour kayak rental or the Awards Dinner. An Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club will close the two-day event. Cocktails will be served at 5 p.m., followed by an Italian buffet at 6 p.m. Dinner is $75 per person. Those who raise at least $100 will not be charged for dinner. Awards will be presented to the top racers,

top fundraiser, and the Paddling for Poker winner. The event will include a Silent Auction, Raffle and live entertainment provided by The South Bay Salty Dogs. Summer Art Adventure The Art League of Long Island’s Summer Art Adventure, now in its 20th year welcomes fresh faces and fresh ideas for 2015. Under the guidance of new Summer Art Adventure Program Director Marianne Mead, the arts enrichment program that has served a generation of children has extended its weekly sessions for ages 5-14 from four weeks to six weeks of summer fun. New themes and approaches have been introduced in addition to offering longtime favorite activities. Formerly held at the

Elwood Middle School and at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills, the six-week sessions will be held at the Chestnut Hill Elementary School in Dix Hills. Parents have the option of selecting one or more weekly sessions starting week of June 29th and ending week of August 3rd. From 9 to 11:30 a.m. young children ages 5 and 6 and from 9am to 2pm children and teens ages 7-12 will learn drawing, painting, crafts, and sculpture. Back again is “Animal Kingdom” week, where kids discover the art of working with

live animals. Selmer’s Pet Land has brought smiles to the faces of young artists as their cooperative models have inspired beautiful works of art. In three twoweek sessions for teens ages 12-14 there are projects in drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, digital design, mixed media, and a field trip to a plein air painting experience. In an effort to expand program options, the Art League has partnered with the Park Shore Day Camp to offer kids ages 5-9 the choice of the regularly scheduled Summer Art

Adventure experience or attend mornings of arts enrichment in the Art League’s program and afternoons of indoor/ outdoor recreation at Park Shore’s nearby 15 acre campus. Busing from the Chestnut Hill Elementary School will be provided by Park Shore. In the Teen Portfolio program for teens ages 1417, in two 3-week sessions (July 6th-July 24th & July 27th-August 14th) students will be able to fully immerse themselves in the creative process, develop a sense of camaraderie

and community with their fellow artists, and expand their portfolios under the direction of new lead instructor Artist/ Instructor Nikki Girgenti. Studies in observational drawing, figure drawing, mixed media, watercolors, acrylic, printmaking, digital photography, landscapes, book arts, found object art, sculpture, and alternative techniques will be explored. Students will enjoy unique experiences, such as mock portfolio reviews, creating digital portfolios, guest speakers, and much
