Stay Suffolk Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Wayne Horsley of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau (LICVB), Long Island Wine Council and the Suffolk County Department of Parks jointly announced today the relaunch of the Stay Suffolk local tourism campaign. Stay Suffolk is designed to enhance the region’s $5.3 billion tourism industry by encouraging residents to take advantage of the world-class amenities Suffolk County has to offer and explore the various attractions that draw more than 9.1 million to the County each year. “It is easy to take living in our region for granted. When most people think of vacation spots, they do not often think of their
own backyards,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “However, Suffolk County is home to wonderful destinations, such as world-class beaches, wine country, pristine golf courses, our vibrant downtowns and much more. surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers
currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a flourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to flip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through
the wedding and birth announcements, academic and athletic accomplishments and more. How exciting it was to actually know some of these people who were featured – and occasionally, if you were lucky, to see your own name in print. Many clippings in my scrapbook are from none other than the old South Bay. How fulfilling to know that, over 60 years after its initial founding, our publication is still providing the same service to the community, to individuals within each neighborhood we reach. You simply can’t replace that sort of personalized touch. So, to all those weeklies out there – keep cranking. Your influence is being widely felt across the nation, one community at a time.

PCLI Honorees Awarded The Press Club of Long Island announced the winners of its annual awards, including the latest inductees of the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame and winner of the Robert W. Greene Public Service Award, at its Media Awards Dinner on Thursday, June 2nd, at the Woodbury Country Club. “It is such an honor for the press club to present awards to the top journalists on Long island each year,” said PCLI President Chris R.
Vaccaro. “From our hall of fame inductions to giving out prestigious awards to deserving professionals and students, this is the highlight of our year, and we congratulate all the winners. We hope that the awards competition helps to make the journalism on Long Island even stronger.” This year’s Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame inductees: Frank Eltman is a longtime Long Island correspondent for the Associated Press. Les Payne is a Pulitzer Prize-winning
journalist who spent most of his career as an editor and columnist at Newsday. He is also the founder of the National Association of Black Journalists. This year’s posthumous inductee is Marie Colvin, an Oyster Bay native who served as a war correspondent for The Sunday Times in London and died in the siege of Homs in Syria in 2012. In her honor, Stony Brook University established the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting.
This year’s inductee to the PCLI Contributors Wing of the Hall of Fame is Vicky Katz Whittaker, who served as president of the press club in 19791980 and was instrumental in creating many of its current programs and policies. The Robert W. Greene Public Service Award was awarded to Newsday for its multi-part series “LI’s Zombie Houses” about the glut of abandoned homes stuck in foreclosure. Briana Smith, a senior
at Hofstra University, is the recipient of this year’s College Journalism Scholarship. Katie Blasl, a reporter for RiverheadLOCAL, is the James Murphy Cub Reporter of the Year. The Delphian, the student paper at Adelphi University, was selected as the Best Collegiate Newspaper. The Great Neck News, published by Blank Slate Media, was selected as the Best Community Weekly Newspaper.
The award for Best High School Newspaper is being shared by The Elmont Phoenix of Elmont High School and The Harbor View of Cold Spring Harbor High School. Tim Bolger, managing editor of Long Island Press, is this year’s Phil Spahn Memorial Award winner. The Spahn Award is presented to a PCLI member who has demonstrated leadership, ability and outstanding service to journalism, PCLI and the community.

Prevention Program Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, in conjunction with the Suffolk County Department of Health will host a free Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) for those with pre-diabetes or at a high risk for developing type-2 diabetes. The program will meet on consecutive Mondays beginning July 18th, at 6 p.m. for 16 weeks, at the
Long Island Cancer Help and Wellness Center, 32 Park Avenue in Bay Shore. Sessions will cover lifestyle changes, including increasing physical activity and improving food choices. Participants work toward goals that lead to prevention or delay of a diabetes diagnosis. Trained lifestyle coaches facilitate classes in small group settings.

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB
found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided
to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According
to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit
bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We
encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

Special Olympics Fundraiser Students at Harborfields High School as well as members of the Booster Club and PTA Council’s Health and Welfare Committee rallied together to raise funds to benefit the Long Island Chapter of the Special Olympics. For their curriculum unit, third-graders received a caterpillar to observe as they transformed into butterflies. They learned about the caterpillar’s life cycle and the different features of the bug as it undergoes metamorphosis. For the show, students dressed as various insects and bugs including

Celebrating Field Day
The grass fields at Harley Avenue Primary School and James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District were filled with blue and white pride fs students, at their respective schools, participated in field day celebrations. The district’s physical education departments
coordinated the day’s festivities, which allowed students to showcase their various athletic abilities while demonstrating good sportsmanship. Each grade level wore a blue or white T-shirt and competed in a variety of physical activities. The field day events required both an individual and team
effort. Throughout the day, students participated in games such as tug of war, an egg balancing exercise, a potato sack race and relay races. As students competed in the events, their fellow teammates, along with teachers and parents, cheered them on from the sidelines.

Scouts from Troop 125 remembered and honored those who gave their lives for our great nation this Memorial Day weekend by giving their time and effort to participate in three community activities. On Saturday, May 28th, Troop 125 Boy Scouts joined Nathan Hale VFW Post 1469 to place flags at Huntington Rural and St. Patrick’s Cemeteries in Huntington. Then, on Sunday May 29th, Scouts attended a memorial service hosted by Troop
125’s sponsor, Commack United Methodist Church. The service was led by Rev. Lynda Bates-Stepe, and some Scouts did readings for the congregation. Global Justice various fundraising activities in an effort to surpass their donation last year. In early March, the student organization hosted their sixth annual Global Justice Club Concert as their final fundraising event of the year. The event drew in the entire community with a variety of raffle donations. In addition, club members sold student-designed concert merchandise and baked goods to raise money.
Since 2012, the club has raised more than $22,000 for The Magic Penny Inc. The money raised this year will be applied to scholarships for young people who want to continue their studies in teacher training for the local school. (NAPSI)—A total of 68 percent of U.S. households own a pet, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), with 56.7 million owning a dog and 45.3 million owning a cat. If your home is among them, you may care to heed these seven hints to keep your pet healthy from the experts at the American Veterinary Medical Association: 1. Maintain your pet at a healthy weight; 2. Exercise your pet; 3. Feed a balanced, nutritious diet; 4. Vaccinate your pet against potentially deadly diseases such as distemper, parvo, panleukopenia and rabies; 6. Spay/neuter your dog or cat; 7. Keep your pet free of
ticks and fleas. Fleas can be responsible for skin conditions such as flea allergy dermatitis in dogs and miliary dermatitis in cats. Fleas also transmit other parasites including tapeworms. A flea infestation is something no pet owner ever wants to face—especially as nearly half of dogs and 62 percent of cats sleep in their owner’s bed, according to the APPA. Always Practice Summer Sun Safety
Clean Up After a Day at the Beach
When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun.
Jaunts to the beach are par for the course come summertime. Thousands of people flock to the coasts of oceans and lakes to enjoy refreshing dips into the water and soak up some rays on the sand. But enjoyable days can turn somewhat aggravating if sand from the beach was not washed off prior to leaving the surf and sun behind.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.
Ensuring sand stays at the beach and isn’t tracked home may require a little patience, but it is possible to hit the beach without taking sand home.
Know the risks of UV exposure. Sunlight is needed to engage vitamin D production in the body, but too much sun exposure can do more harm than good. Ultraviolet, or UV, rays from the sun and other sources, such as tanning beds, are
the primary cause of skin cancer. Exposure also can lead to sunburns, premature aging/wrinkling and eye damage. Use only broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen. Look for a sunblock product that boasts an SPF of at least 30. The FDA requires any sunscreen with an SPF below 15 to carry a warning that it only protects against sunburn, not skin cancer or skin aging. Find a sunscreen that works against UVA and UVB rays as well. UVA rays are mostly responsible for contributing to skin cancer and premature aging. Reapply frequently, especially when swimming or engaging in activities that cause sweating. Know the difference between water-resistant and waterproof sunscreens. Manufacturers are no longer
allowed to claim that their sunscreens are waterproof or sweatproof. A sunscreen may be able to repel water for a short time, but it should be reapplied when leaving the water or when spending long stretches in the water. Cover up whenever possible. It may seem counterintuitive in hot weather, but covering up can be beneficial to the skin and actually keep a person cooler. Wear widebrimmed hats, long-sleeve tops and light-colored pants. Some materials are made with reflective properties, while others actually boast their own SPF. Summer fun does not need to be threatened by overexposure to the sun. By exercising caution, everyone can spend quality time in the great outdoors all summer long.
Arrive prepared. Bring supplies to the beach that will make it easy to keep sand from finding its way into your car or home. A large trash bag, some extra towels that never hit the sand and some moist wipes to clean leftover sand off your arms and legs can help you leave the sand at the beach where it belongs. Also, establish a time to leave the beach well in advance so everyone has time to clean up. Reserve bags specifically for the beach. Reserve bags for the sole task of transporting items to and from the beach so you are not adding to your collection of bags that have sand on them with each beach visit you make. These also can be used to store sandy
kids’ toys. Protect electronics and other sensitive items. Sand can damage phones, tablets and other electronics. Zip-top bags provide ample storage and can keep devices safe from sand that can be lodged in crevices or can scratch screens. Clean sand off of clothes and chairs in the parking lot. Give clothes, beach chairs and other items exposed to sand a good shake or wipe-down in the parking lot before driving home. Give extra attention to sunblock-covered bodies. Sprinkle some cornstarch or baby powder on your skin before toweling off, as doing so can help release any sand that’s stubbornly sticking to your skin. Do not forget to wipe off sandy feet as well. Wrap up towels and sandy items. Put anything used
to wipe off sand into a garbage bag and make sure it is tied tightly. After shaking the items off in the parking lot, do so again in your yard before dropping them into the hamper. Keep dry towels in the car. Even the most ardent cleaner may still track some sand along. Placing towels over the seats in the car will catch any errant sand. Towels also protect the seats from damp swimsuits. Do an extra cleaning at home. Hose down any chairs and items brought to the beach once you return home. This will dislodge any remaining sand and prevent it from being tracked inside. Store belongings in a shed or garage. Avoid tracking sand indoors by keeping beach supplies in the garage or a backyard shed.
