The Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Boys Varsity tennis team recently took home the title of League II Tennis Champions, with 10thgrader Zak Siddiquia also reaching the Suffolk County Quarterfinal round at this year’s Suffolk County Individual Tennis Championship. Under the guidance of their coach Frank Schiraldi, the team of 15 was the only team in all of Suffolk County to go undefeated in the regular
season. It was a milestone year for the team who, for the first time in the school’s tennis history, finished their regular season undefeated with an 11-0 record. It was also the first time since 2004 that a player from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School made it to the Suffolk County Quarterfinal round at the Suffolk County Individual Tennis Championship. Mr. Schiraldi credited the team for all their hard work and dedication

throughout the season. “They demonstrated a strong desire and commitment to be the very best,” he said. “Going undefeated in League II is a tremendous accomplishment for us considering we are playing schools that are three to four times the size of us. I am extremely proud of the boys integrity and class that they showed on and off the court throughout the season.”
Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students involved in the Elwood Union Free School District’s Freshmen Buddies Program prepared incoming freshmen on June 1st for what to expect when they enter the high school next year. The 75 juniors and seniors who have been selected to serve as mentors in the program visited Elwood Middle School to introduce themselves to their group of incoming freshmen. This allowed the
students to get acquainted before their next meet-up, which will be Freshmen Orientation at the end of August. Guidance counselor and Freshmen Buddy advisor Adrienne Nasser welcomed all the students and explained a little more about the program. “As you are ending the eighth-grade year, I’m sure you are all thinking about what high school is going to be like,” she said. “It is always nice to know people in a new school and today

we are hoping that by meeting your mentors who will work with you all of next year, it will ease that transition for you.” The groups made their way outside where they sat in circles and discussed the upcoming school year. The high school students encouraged the eighth-graders to ask any questions that they had about the high school and even shared their own experiences with their groups.

Hybrid Theory I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication. While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. It brought to light the question of what, exactly, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers’ mission has been since 1953, and how very unique a position we fill in the wider landscape of community weeklies. We have always categorized
ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is. As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication. Parents, teachers, coaches and scouting leaders are all welcome to participate in publicizing those individual

I remember being a student myself back at the end of high school and having my mom drop my graduation announcement off at the old office on Hoffman Avenue in Lindenhurst knowing that, the following week, I would receive my copy of “The South Bay” and find my picture inside. How exciting to be a part of the hometown paper; and to share the good news with all my friends and neighbors. The world of journalism is a broad one indeed, one that takes in many different styles and degrees of substance, and in the end provides a little something for everyone. Yesterday, Assemblyman Andrew Raia welcomed 2017 Senator John J. Marchi Memorial Scholarship for Athletic Achievement recipient John Tevere to Albany, where he was honored by the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators. Tevere, a resident of Dix Hills and senior at Half Hollow Hills West, was one of four students from across New York State to be selected
for the Italian-American Legislators scholarship. “John is an outstanding individual, a product of a great family and one of the wonderful education systems we have in our district,” said Raia. “Not only is he outstanding on the soccer and baseball fields, but he is equally as impressive in his academic ventures. After sitting with him and his family for the day, I got to know this incredible young man
and have no doubt he will be an excellent addition to the Villanova University community.” Tevere, a senior at Half Hollow Hills West High School, will graduate with several honors to his name, such as: the Italian Honor Society, Business Honor Society and National Honor Society. He was also a stalwart on the pitch, where he played at the varsity level for two years on the school soccer team, and served as captain of his soccer team in Dix Hills. “I wish John the best of luck in the coming years, and look forward to seeing him achieve the life goals I know he is capable of,” said Raia. Tevere will attend Villanova University in the fall, where he will study engineering and business. John hopes his future success will grant him the ability to give back to his community and help address humanitarian issues such as global hunger, clean water and education for children.

Huntington Town Councilwomen Susan A. Berland and Tracey A. Edwards joined with other public officials June 4th in the opening ceremonies and official start of a walkathon organized by the BAPS Hindu temple to raise funds for a national tree planting campaign and to support two local organizations. The event at the BAPS Mandir on Deshon Drive was one of 70 held nationwide by BAPS Charities, the charitable arm of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha Hindu sect, to benefit the Nature Conservancy by raising money to plant 100,000 trees at various
locations. The effort here will also benefit two local organizations, the Town of Huntington Youth Bureau’s Project Excel and the Mothers Club of Wheatley Heights. Councilwomen Berland and Edwards offered welcoming remarks to the approximately 400 walkers, each highlighting the effort that brought the BAPS to build the Mandir that opened last year and the sect’s commitment to helping the community. Each year, the BAPS tries to raise money to benefit local groups that have some sort of educational component. Also joining in the ceremony were Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, County Legis.
Steve Stern, Assembs. Chad Lupinacci and Andrew Raia, a representative from Gov. Andrew Cuomo and U.S. Rep. Thomas Suozzi. After the welcoming remarks, the officials helped plant four trees on the property, and then cut the ribbon to mark the start of the walkathon, which nationwide is called Walk Green 2017. The walkathon is one of many activities supported by BAPS Charities. Other North American activities include blood drives, bone marrow drives, career fairs, children’s health and safety days, disaster relief, Earth Day, flu vaccination drives, food drives, health awareness lectures and health fairs.

First-grade students in Melinda O’Donoghue class at Washington Drive Primary School participated in their first ever “Maker Mayhem” event on May 31st. Family members were invited to the event which focused on STEAM challenges, enabling the students to work together to create new ideas. The class prepared by working on STEAM challenges throughout the school year. During the event, six teams of four students worked with one or two family volunteers to successfully accomplish a challenge of their choice. O’Donoghue gave the teams several options to choose from including the challenge of creating something you can wear, creating an instrument, creating an object that floats, creating a building or shelter, creating an object to play with and creating an object that can move.

Each student had a worksheet where they first planned out their designs and ideas. Afterwards, they worked with their teammates to find the right materials for their creations. They worked with supplies such as recycled water bottles, boxes, Legos, construction paper, glue sticks, tape, pipe cleaners and more. They problem solved and constructed their designs together. O’Donoghue timed the students and upon completion, each team shared their creations. They shared what challenges they faced and what they ultimately came up with. “I hope that the students learned the importance of perseverance and flexability with these challenges,” said O’Donoghue. “Also, a better understanding of how to put things together when you sometimes have to approach things in a different way.

Day of STEM Harley Avenue Primary School students in the Elwood Union Free School District recently participated in a day of STEM enrichment made possible by teacher Renee Spanos’s ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) Teacher Impact Grant. Through a number of
appropriate grade-level STEM activities, students had the opportunity to explore their creativity and challenge themselves inside the classroom. Kindergarten students tested out catapults and built straw, stick and brick houses for the three little pigs while first-graders learned about bridges and
then constructed their own. They also completed engineering challenges with a partner. In addition, secondgrade students built and floated junk boats and worked with their peers to engineer a device to send Principal Elissa Millan a secret message atop a tower. 55th Annual Awards Presentation
Sparkplug Awards
The Matinecock District of the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, held its annual fellowship dinner and presentation of the Spark Plug and District Award of Merit recognitions on Thursday, May 27th at the Elks Lodge in Huntington. The Matinecock Scouting District serves 2,027 youth members in the Town of Huntington and in Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge in the western section of the Smithtown Township. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of the District Award of Merit. In addition, other adult recognition awards were presented. The recipients had been nominated by members of their Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Venture Crews and part of this was kept as a surprise until the presentations. In 2017, volunteer Scouters were recognized for their efforts in scouting and their community with Spark Plug Awards, Spouses Recognition Awards,
Journey to Excellence, and Training Awards. The Spark Plug Awards were presented to members of the Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Venture Crews who “are the spark plug of the engine, to get things started and going and are an inspiration to the youths and adults that they work with and encourage.” Nominations were submitted from their peers within their respective units for their continuing contribution to their specific Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, or Venture Crew. In essence, each recipient is truly the “spark” that helps ignite the motivation and thrust within that unit. In 2017, the Matinecock Scouting District Spark Plug Awards were presented to 19 Scouting volunteers and included: Cub Scout Pack 66 (South Huntington) Cubmaster Greg Galustian, Committee Members Drew Haritonides and Cathy Braithwaite, Den Leader Erica Balducci, and Den Leader Stephanie Mirabelli;

Students, family members, faculty, administrators and board members gathered at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School on May 23rd for the high school’s 55th annual Awards Presentation. The evening consisted of administrators and faculty recognizing students in the Class of 2017 for their high school success in the areas of academics, service and leadership. Principal Carisa Burzynski and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert kicked off the ceremony by welcoming those in attendance and congratulating the students for their
achievements. “Each of you are here tonight because you have gone above and beyond during your years at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School,” said Mrs. Burzynski. “We are so proud of all that you have accomplished.” In addition, Dr. Bossert encouraged the students to express their gratitude to their families and those who have helped them and supported them along their journey. Students who maintained an outstanding GPA throughout their high school career were honored with the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. Mrs. Burzynski and Assistant Principal
Leroy Cole recognized the National Merit Scholarship Commended Students Derek Lee, Kristofer Kwan and Katherine McPherson. They also presented certificates to National Merit Scholarship Finalists David and Michael Hermanns and students who received the New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence. Futhermore, seniors were awarded ParentTe a c h e r- S t u d e n t Association (PTSA) gold and silver medals based on their academic success in different subject areas and scholarship awards, including those from the PTA and PTSA.

Spanish Proficiency Students throughout Elwood Middle School and Elwood-John H. Glenn High School recently received top scores on the 2017 National Spanish Examinations. Five eighthgraders, four freshmen and three sophomores attained national recognition by earning a gold medal for their excellent performance. At the middle school level, seventh and eighthgraders prepared for the exam with the help of Spanish teachers Jennifer Vacchio and Valentina Parisi. Gold medal winners included eighth-graders Lizbeth Almendarez, Andrew Mullan, Daniel Mullan, Rithika Narayan and Daniel Rourke.
Between both grades, students earned a total of five gold, four silver and six bronze medals along with 17 honorable mentions. A number of students also received a certificate of participation for their effort on the exam. At the high school level, freshmen Ivan Andrade, Kerri Rhatigan, Elena Somoza, Ava Wilkinson and sophomores Bailey Leunig, Jaida Morgan and Meaghan Rivardo received a gold medal for placing in the 95th percentile or higher nationwide. Under the guidance of their Spanish teachers Sheri Davis, Nicole Gendjoian and Diane Warren, the high school earned a total of seven
gold, 22 silver and 23 bronze medals along with 43 honorable mentions. The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades seven through 12 and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said National Director of the Exams Kevin CessnaBuscemi. “The exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 157,000 students participating in 2017.”

Forty Northport High School seniors were commended on May 25th during the school’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Program’s Recognition Ceremony. Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer, administrators, board members, faculty and family members attended the ceremony where IB Diploma Program Coordinator Wayne Jensen welcomed the crowd. He explained the significance of the evening and praised the students for their achievement. “You have become remarkable thinkers who actively seek opportunities for independent learning,” said Jensen. “Tonight represents the culmination of two years of hard work and the completion of a program that along with many other factors, has
played a substantial role in shaping the person you are today.” To complete the IB Diploma Program, each student was challenged to take six IB courses from across the major content groups. These included studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, the arts and electives. Throughout the ceremony, several independent awards were presented to deserving students. Thomas Dowling, Jr. and Blake Stoddard received the IB Theory of Knowledge Award, Malena Farber and Caitlin Johnson both received the $500 Deborah A. Shavalier Memorial Scholarship, while Sarah Abodalo took home the $1,000 scholarship. Abodalo was also presented with
the IB Diploma Teacher Recognition Award along with Laura Dayton for their dedication in the classroom. IB students Sean Chin and John Charles Unser presented their senior address, highlighting their positive program experience and the IB Dance students performed. In addition, IB student Ceylan Swenson shared her senior poem that she wrote specifically for the occasion titled, “There Once Was A Competent Student.” At the conclusion of the ceremony, each member of the IB Diploma Class of 2017 was awarded a certificate from Principal Daniel Danbusky for their high achievement and were invited to enjoy a reception in the school cafeteria to celebrate.
Off to Italy Harborfields High School senior Matthew Katz from the Harborfields Central School District recently received the Anthony Calia Foundation Scholarship at the Association of Italian American Educators (AIAE) 20th Anniversary Gala. The full scholarship will allow Katz to study Italian language and culture in Pisa, Italy this summer. He will participate in an enriching program, titled Programma Ponte, which enables qualified Italian American students
to take part in an intensive summer program of study designed to give those with Italian American heritage firsthand experience with Italy today through coursework, visits to important Italian and European institutions and direct contact with the Italian people. Katz was selected based on a strong recommendation from AIAE President Cav. Josephine Maietta and Harborfields High School English teacher Jim Incorvaia. He also provided

an essay about why he would be a exceptional candidate and a writing sample demonstrating analytical and writing abilities. Along with his Italian teacher Craig Butler, Katz attended the special luncheon which featured authors, playwrights, news reporters and Former New York State First Lady Matilda Cuomo. Mrs. Cuomo congratulated and encouraged the award winners to continue their scholarship in Italian Language.

A Slice of Knowledge in their writing workshops. As a culminating activity to their writing unit, students wanted to learn how to make pizza and Dr. Ianni did the honors. Originally from Italy, Dr. Ianni worked in a pizzeria for several years when he first arrived in the U.S. During the lesson, he taught students how to make pizza, while they
followed along and created their own out of Play-Doh. “The students enjoyed getting their hands dirty and now have their own pizza as a memento for the lesson,” said Moccaldi. “Seeing Dr. Ianni toss the pizza dough in the air was a favorite part for many of the students.”

Visit from Holocaust Survivor impacted his life. His friendships were torn apart due to his Jewish ancestry and he was kicked off of his soccer team when he was 14-years-old because of it. The students also learned more about Kristallnacht and Hess shared his experience living through the infamous night. He told students that his parents’ fish store was destroyed and that the following day, Nazis came for his father who was dying of cancer. They attempted to take him instead but when he reported to the collection point, he was not sent away. Instead, Hess escaped to England in 1939 and arrived in the United States in 1940. He stressed the
importance of educating generations about the tragic time in history to prevent it from ever happening again. “We must respect the human rights of everyone,” said Hess. At the conclusion of his presentation, Hess shared a photograph from Kristallnacht and his passport with the students. They each had the opportunity to ask questions and many wanted to know more about what life was like before and after the Holocaust. “It was sad to hear about what those people went through,” said fifth-grader Angel Cazeau. “I think it was really nice of him to tell us his story.”

Fifth-graders at Dickinson Avenue Elementary School in the Northport-East Northport School District heard from 96-year-old Holocaust survivor Werner Hess on May 26th. Hess, a speaker from the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, visited the school to provide students with a better understanding of the significant time in history. The presentation took place in the school library where he and his wife Lottie sat among the students. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 1 I FISH NY program will hold a free fishing clinic on Father’s Day weekend, Saturday, June 17th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., DEC Regional Director Carrie Meek Gallagher announced today. DEC is partnering with the Theodore Roosevelt Council’s Schiff Scout Reservation Director Matt Conlon to offer a family oriented fishing event with instruction in fishing ethics and techniques. “Fishing is a longstanding tradition throughout the year on Long Island,” DEC Regional Director Meek Gallagher said. “Fishing can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for families and people of all ages, because it allows participants to get outside and take advantage of the nice weather right in their backyards.” The clinic will be held
at Deep Pond at the Schiff Scout Reservation, 1606 Wading River Manor Road, Wading River. The reservation is owned by the Boy Scouts of America Theodore Roosevelt Council. Free loaner fishing rods and bait will be supplied by I FISH NY with fishing instruction by DEC staff. The event will begin promptly at 10 a.m. with basic “how to” fishing instruction and fish identification. A brief discussion on the challenges and techniques of fishing will be included. This event is geared toward ages 10 and up, including families, individuals, beginners, and experts. No fishing license is required for this event. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, which may include a hat and sunscreen or a rain jacket, and it is recommended to bring water or other non-alcoholic beverages. Participants who own their own fishing rods and
