Opportunities For A Better Future The Elwood Union Free School District recently received over $36,000 in grant funds thanks to the dedication and fundraising efforts of the Elwood Education Endowment (EEE) — a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enriching educational opportunities for the district’s students. Teachers and administrators throughout
the district composed grant applications for review by the EEE’s grant committee. Each went through an in-depth evaluation, and nine were selected. At the district’s April board of education meeting, recipients were honored for their grantwriting efforts, as well as the vision they have for their students. EEE
president Deena Purow was in attendance to present each recipient to the board. New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

This organization is also in need of additional volunteers to help out in various areas. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Two groups of sixthgraders from the Northport-East Northport School District presented their civic education projects for the Project Citizens Showcase at the NYC Bar Association in Manhattan on May 24. Presenting students Isabella Bica, Kailey Ciszek and Samantha Yolango from Northport Middle School and Anjolina Buttacoli, Lily Eagan and Kate Karp from East Northport Middle School completed this project within the district’s Investigate program, which is a challenging enrichment program that emphasizes higher level thinking skills, problem solving activities and cooperative learning techniques. For this semester-long project, students were required to identify an issue of public policy in their community that
concerned them, research the problem, and interview community members in order to learn more about the issue. Groups then presented their projects to a panel of civic experts at the Tuoro Law center earlier this spring. Two of the groups — “Ban Cat Declawing in New York” and “School Crossing Guards” — were encouraged by program facilitators Frangitsa Bertos and Brianne Furstein and Northport High School law teacher David Scott to continue on to the Project Citizen Showcase. This showcase included students from elementary to high school age, and was coordinated by Debra Lesser, the executive director of the Justice Resource Center; an organization established to help implement lawrelated education projects that positively impact
students, and aids students in learning about the government and their role and responsibilities as citizens. Each group had the opportunity to present to a panel of expert judges, and answer questions about their chosen topic. The judges were impressed with the students’ hard work and in-depth knowledge of their chosen issues. When asked why taking action is important, student Lily Eagan spoke up. “Because it’s our community,” she said, “it’s the place that we live. We want it to be the best that it can be for future generations.” At the end of the showcase, Isabella, Kailey and Samantha earned the “Best Designed PowerPoint” award for their presentation about banning cat declawing in New York.
Navy Commander Guest At Centerport Parade United States Navy Commander Kevin Hudson was the guest speaker and parade marshal at this year’s Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony hosted by the Centerport Fire Department. Commander Hudson is a Centerport native who graduated Harborfields High School class of 1988. Hudson enlisted in the Navy
and served on the USS Ranger. He attended NY Maritime College and was commissioned back into the Navy in 1994. Hudson has served in various squadrons flying the P3 Orion, and was deployed in the North Atlantic, Pacific, Indian Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf. He flew combat missions

Named Best Presenters A team of Elwood-John H. Glenn High School student-researchers recently won the best presentation award at the Northwell HospitalFeinstein Institute’s annual Medical Marvels Competition. This collaborative research competition is for ninth and 10th-grade students
across the island who are seeking to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math. The team was comprised of sophomores Brennan Finnegan, Jake Haddad, Sasha Jamal, Devin Lee, Julia Mady-Aguiar and Rithika Narayan. Collaboratively, the
students wrote a 14-page paper on the harmful effects of vaping and proposed a resolution to the high school vaping crisis across New York. After presenting in competition with 37 other teams, they were awarded the best presentation award.

Sklarin Receives Long Island Power Woman Award For over 25 years, Smithtown’s Lauren Sklarin has been advocating for Long Island businesses and individuals, most currently as the director of community relations for Orchard Estate of Woodbury, a Benchmarkassisted living and memory care community under construction in Woodbury, N.Y. Today, Orchard Estate is announcing that her advocacy work and achievements have earned her the Long Island Power Woman award. Recently at Leonard’s Palazzo in Great Neck, Sklarin was recognized as a change-maker, rainmaker, innovator and being a voice to impact change. Drawing on the experience of caring for both of her grandmothers, she is passionate about helping Long Island seniors and their families through the aging process. She frequently educates the public about dementia and enjoys helping people obtain the best quality care to meet their needs. “Lauren’s positivity and immense energy around helping seniors in our community is a rare quality and something
that everyone is benefiting from,” says Doug Cormack, executive director of Orchard Estate. “She makes Orchard Estate and the communities we serve a much better place, and I can think of no one else, female or male, who is more worthy of this award.” Sklarin is also passionate about helping children learn the skills they need to succeed in life. She has spent the last 15 years teaching presentation skills to children in South Huntington, N.Y. As a licensed soccer coach, she has spent 10 years coaching children in the HBC Soccer Club and Smithtown Kickers Soccer Club. She has also coached basketball to children
through Half Hollow Hills FURY. With two children in the Smithtown School District, Sklarin spent three years as vice president and secretary of the PTA of Accompsett Middle School where she led many successful fundraisers. Prior to joining Orchard Estate, Sklarin served as director of community relations for Home Instead Senior Care for Central Suffolk County. Before that, she served in account management roles for a number of public relations agencies, including Publicis and Edelman. She graduated from SUNY New Paltz with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. The Long Island Power Woman awards recognize successful business, community, cultural, political, civic and religious female leaders. The idea is to bring women together to support and learn from one another so they can achieve their goals. The annual event gathers Long Island’s highpowered businesswomen together to celebrate their achievements and create powerful allies in the workplace and community.

Ancient Art Of Mosaics Local artist Esther Tollen visited the students of Harborfields High School to teach the ancient art of mosaics on May 20. Students heard from Ms. Tollen about her art career and gleaned helpful techniques for mosaic making, such as keeping the layer of grout (the
adhesive agent) consistent on their mosaic tile and the value of keeping a flow of material sizes moving through the piece. Students then worked throughout the afternoon to create their own unique masterpiece. After completion, the tiles will be permanently installed in
the high school’s art wing. “Our district’s support of cultural arts programs allows our students to experience different art forms first hand,” said art teacher Ms. Eugenia Ritter, “and it’s truly an invaluable experience for our young artists.”
