Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists. This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the
magazines and blogs, over the broadcast airwaves… but rarely have the opportunity to personally acknowledge. This year, as an added bonus, PCLI honored past Outstanding Journalists as part of their initial class of Hall of Fame inductees. To see these giants of the industry assembled before a crowd of their peers was easily the highlight of an evening that had many memorable moments. It is nights like this that remind me why I chose to go into the field of Journalism to begin
with, to pursue a career that many seem to frown upon, for considerably less money than other, far less impactful, careers. Crazy, right? Not when you step back and take stock of a crowd like that, on a night like that, and realize that, yes, it’s all worth it. Congratulations to all the winners, once again. I can only hope that, one day, I will be fortunate enough to stand among you. ‘Til then, I consider myself extremely lucky to be a mere observer, soaking in the inspiration from those who have come before me.

Poster Contest Winners Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone commended winners of an anti-cyberbullying art contest at a ceremony on Friday, May 30th. “We all need to be part of the solution to ending the harm caused by cyber-bullying,” the County Executive said. “Bullying does not discriminate. It affects children on all socioeconomic levels, ages and ethnicities and its effects can be devastating, ranging from damaging a person’s self-esteem to substance abuse to causing physical harm, up to and including suicide. We are taking a step toward eliminating this problem by honoring students who are fighting to end it through their artwork.” The County Executive noted that in the United States alone, an estimated 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by their peers. One in seven students in Grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying. Statistics also show that 56% of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying at school. The Suffolk County Office of Human Services sponsored the poster contest and disseminated guidelines for submission to all schools within Suffolk County. “We were extremely pleased with the response to the Anti-Cyberbullying Poster Contest,” said Roderick A. Pearson-Executive Director of the office of Human Services. “We thank the teachers and administrators for encouraging their students to participate and we thank all of the students for their submissions. The student’s commitment to this issue will go a long way in ensuring that bullying is not tolerated by students.” In addition the anti-cyberbullying campaign, Legislator Sarah Anker recently received unanimous
approval from the Suffolk County Legislature to launch a new bullying awareness website. The site will provide support and guidance for children who are or have been bullied. The site will launch in September 2014. “When it comes to bullying, it’s all about speaking up,” said Anker. “Cyber-bullying has increased dramatically over the past several years, and the county will have the opportunity to assist by providing valuable resources to those who need support. I’m looking forward to facilitating the website to help prevent the emotional
scars that bullying can leave behind.” As of July 1st, 2012, the New York State Dignity Act mandates that all schools must designate a point person, known as a Dignity Act Coordinator (DAC), to assist students who feel that they are being bullied. To assist school districts in meeting this mandate, the Suffolk County Dept. of Health Services Office of Health Education has developed and implemented an 8 to 14 session peer education program entitled: “Healthy
Communication and Bullying Prevention.” The main goal of the program is to teach students how to stand up for someone being bullied rather than standing by passively. The purpose is to create “Up-stander Empathy from Bystander Apathy.” The result is that students are trained how to respond to aggression and how to stand up for those targeted, and then go into the classes and teach what they know. In October, Suffolk County will join the nation and declare October as National Bullying Prevention Month. The winning posters will be on display in the lobby of the H. Lee Dennison for all to witness your creativity and commitment to preventing bullying. Unmanaged hearing loss can interrupt the cognitive processing of spoken language and sound, regardless of other coexisting conditions. But when an individual has both Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, many of the symptoms of hearing loss can interact with those common to Alzheimer’s, making the disease more difficult than it might be if the hearing loss had been addressed. Studies have shown that although a significantly higher percentage of people with Alzheimer’s disease may have hearing loss than their normally aging peers, they are much less likely to receive attention for their hearing needs.

Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) invites community oriented and civically engaged individuals to the historic site for an enriching discussion series. Island Harvest Food Bank, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, today announced that it collected 326,365 pounds of food as part of the Stamp Out Hunger campaign held on Saturday, May 10th. Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest singleday food drive, an annual event in association with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), United States Postal Service and food banks across the country. Locally, all proceeds benefit Island Harvest in supporting more than 300,000 Long Islanders — including 110,000 children — who face the risk of going hungry every day. This year’s collection of 326,365 pounds of food from across Long Island is equal to 271,970 meals for those struggling with hunger. “Island Harvest is pleased to see so many

This weekend, I am competing in the National Championship for rowing. As the culmination of four years of hard work, this regatta marks the end of my rowing career. Although I started as a very poor athlete, I grew to love the sport. Now, I’m representing St. John the Baptist in the Varsity Quad, along with three of my best friends. I’m also competing in the Varsity Pair. This year proved to be one of the most productive in recent years, as we have six boats competing in this national championship. With so many entries, I believe we have put St. John’s on the map, as a force to be reckoned with
in the realm of high school crew. With any luck, some of our boats can bring home some hardware, as we build a dynasty that will continue for future athletes. When I entered as a freshman, my team was mediocre. Now, as I leave, my team is outstanding. The hard work put in by both the athletes and the coaches, combined with significant involvement from the parents, helped to solidify SJB as a force both on the water and in training. I like to think that I have made a positive difference on this team - and maybe I have - but the opportunity to compete on the highest stage available was earned
by hard work on the part of the entire team. Perhaps our impressive year will lead to advances in the future. With any luck, our bid for a national title ends in a medal. Even if it does not, I can honestly say that my four years as a St. John’s rower have left me a better athlete and a better person. This team has left an imprint on me that will last forever. I will never forget my coaches, my teammates or the memories we’ve formed along the way. I started the season as a substitute, and now I’m on a boat, rowing toward a national championship, with a group of friends I would not trade for the world.

Raising Funds For Ronald Students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District raised $1,200 this school year for the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, an organization that provides housing for families who have children being treated for illnesses in
local hospitals. Thomas J. Lahey students raised the money through the school’s annual volleyball tournament at the end of January. In mid-May, Joe O’Connor, a representative from the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, visited Thomas J. Lahey
students to thank them for their donation and speak about the mission of the organization. “You really worked well together as a group,” said O’Connor. “Twelve hundred dollars is a sizable donation for an elementary school, so I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Donations Save Dog Students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District collected $765 for Huntington’s Little Shelter, a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter. The money donated to the organization was used to help pay the medical bills for a two-year old Lhasa Apso dog named Demi. Demi required a life-saving surgery to treat a liver shunt, a malfunctioning blood vessel in the liver.
Students in Ms. Friend’s class presented the school’s donation to Arlene Leone, special programs manager for the shelter, in midMay. Leone talked with students about the Little Shelter’s mission and expressed her gratitude for their donation. “Without this surgery, Demi would have passed away,” Leone said. “You saved her life.” Students even had the opportunity to greet Leone’s dog, Charlotte,
who was rescued from the shelter and now serves as a therapy dog at Northport VA Medical Center. Jennifer Satchell, a representative from Councilman Eugene Cook’s office, was also on-hand to present students with a special proclamation for their efforts. “Councilman Cook hopes that as you get older, you continue to help homeless dogs and cats,” she said. “Sometimes, they need a champion.”’

Veteran volunteers and community organizations were asked to provide assistance as a community service at the 5th Annual Veterans Stand Down on May 28th at the Northport VA Medical Center. The Northport VAMC sponsored this biannual event to help homeless, and at risk for homelessness, Veterans in need of assistance. Fifty four (54) Federal, State, County and local human services agencies were present to assist Veterans in need of health, employment, financial, housing, educational, and VA Benefits. In addition, a meal and hair cut station were
available as well as two local food pantries (Island Harvest & Long Island Cares) and a clothing closet to all Veterans in attendance. Furthermore, two hundred and thirty seven (237) Veterans in need of assistance were helped by those in attendance. On May 29th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) and Atria Senior Living of Huntington hosted a seminar entitled Ask The Expert Update on Newest Alzheimer’s Research, which was part of ADRC’s Speaker Series. Guest speaker Ana C. Pereira, M.D. discussed the most recent research that has been conducted and the recent findings that will hopefully lead to a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. Ms. Pereira, an Instructor
in Clinical Investigation at Rockefeller University in New York City and a Post Doctorate Research Scientist at Columbia University, reviewed basic principles about the brain, the mechanisms of Alzheimer’s Disease, and the current research and treatments in the field. In addition, Ms. Pereira explained the research she has been conducting at Rockefeller University in New York City, along with potential opportunities to participate in a clinical
trial. Guests viewed a PowerPoint presentation as Ms. Pereira answered questions at the end of the session. She explained her findings and what it will take to find a drug that will help regress the duration of the disease. Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern, Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, was joined by Legislators Lou D’Amaro and William Spencer in honoring Bill Ober, Commandant of the Marine Corps League, Huntington Detachment, #792, upon his retirement from the League. Ober joined the Huntington Detachment in 2002 and was immediately named Chaplain. Within two years, he was elected to serve as Commandant, a position he has filled with distinction, honor and great skill. BEING POOL SMART - Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro recently met with students at Birchwood Intermediate School in Melville, Oakwood Primary Center in Huntington and Silas Wood Sixth Grade Center in Huntington Station to discuss pool safety tips and honor those who participated in Suffolk County’s 2014 “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Established in 2007, the annual competition invites elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety and prevent accidental drownings by creating a poster that illustrates one or more safety tips.
EXHIBIT UNVEILED - The unveiling of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame’s exhibit was recently held at MacArthur Airport. Portraits and displays of prominent athletes, coaches, and other sports personalities that made a name for themselves in the Islip community now line the walls along the path that travelers take while embarking and disembarking aircraft. The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame used to be housed in a permanent location, but was forced to close due to a lack of funds. Now the Hall of Fame organization is establishing exhibits at various locations throughout Suffolk County. The men and women featured at the MacArthur Airport exhibit are all specific to Islip Town, but the Hall of Fame’s focus is on the accomplishments of Suffolk County athletes as a whole.
Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Got Talent Finalists The Huntington Arts Council is proud to announce Kristen Murphy as the winner of the 5th Annual “Got Talent? Long Island,” a talent competition for performers 18 years & under. Kristina Diaz is the recipient of the Rising Star Award and Pursuing JC is the Audience Choice award winner. Hosted by Bob Spiotto, the competition took place this past Saturday, May 31st, at the Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five Towns College, Dix Hills. Congratulations to our top award winner Kristen Murphy a spectacular vocalist, who performed a beautiful rendition of “Popular” by Stephen Schwartz. Kristen is a 15 year old freshman at St. Anthony’s High School. She enjoys competitive dancing (holding 7 solo dance titles), competitive cheerleading, singing and acting, as well as gymnastics. Kristen has had the pleasure of performing all over the east coast including starring as “Peter Pan” at Westbury Music Fair for the last three years. As the top winner of the talent competition Kristen will receive a $1,000 cash award, an opening performance at the 49th Annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival, and more Kristina Diaz, our Rising Star award recipient is an accomplished dancer, who performed beautifully to On The Nature of Daylight. Kristina is a 16 year-old student at Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset. Her interests include studying different styles of dance; modern, ballet, pointe, and jazz. She is actively involved in her school’s dance company serving as modern dance team captain and recently has
been elected as President for the 2014 and 2015 school year. Enjoying dance year-round, Kristina has been accepted to summer dance programs such as Bolshoi Ballet, and the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater Company. Pursuing JC a 7 piece band, and our Audience Award winners, wowed the crowd with their energetic version
of Viva La Vida. With the sound of veteran musicians who have been playing music for most of their lives; you maybe surprised to know that Pursuing JC is comprised of young adults ages ranging from 11-15 years old. The Pursuing JC band first started at Shelter Rock Church back in 2011 and began as a youth group band with just
one song. However, once heard, they quickly found that their level of playing ability gained them much deserved attention and they were soon invited to churches and festivals throughout Long Island. “The show on Saturday night was the best one yet. The level of talent was unsurpassed and the judges expressed their difficulty in choosing the winners. Free Fishing Clinic The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation I FISH NY program, in cooperation with the Nassau County Boy Scouts Theodore Roosevelt Council, will offer a free Freshwater Fishing Clinic on Saturday, June 14th. The clinic will be held at the Schiff Scout Reservation in Wading River, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Clinics of this type have received overwhelming
responses in the past, demonstrating the intense interest in freshwater fishing on Long Island,” Regional Director Peter A. Scully said. “In these hectic times, fishing is a wonderful family activity that can develop into a hobby that provides a lifetime of fun, relaxation, and opportunity to slow down and rediscover the natural world that sustains us.
