Even though the Fourth of July, a holiday in which the flag is prominently and proudly displayed, had long been celebrated as the birthday of the United States, Cigrand wanted a holiday that would focus specifically on the flag in all its glory. June 14 was selected because it marked the anniversary of the official adoption of the first flag. Cigrand led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday, and throughout his life continued to advocate for respect of the flag. Various other organizations liked the idea of a day to honor the flag, including the State Board of Education of New York, the Betsy Ross House and the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution. Yet, it wasn’t until May 30, 1916, that Flag Day was officially established by presidential proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson. Still, it would take another 33 years for President Truman to sign an Act of Congress designating June 14 as the

official National Flag Day, which he did on August 3, 1949. Americans can honor the flag by displaying it on Flag Day. Here’s how to display the flag properly, courtesy of Military.com. • The flag should be free of any obstructions, such as power lines or tree limbs. • If displayed with other flags, Old Glory should be at the top-most point or in the center of a horizontal array of flags. • If the flag is displayed on its side, the blue field should be to the left. • The flag should be raised in the morning at a residence or business and taken down at night. The only exception to the flag being out at night is if it’s illuminated. • Flags can be repaired. However, if a flag is tattered, it can be removed and brought to a local VFW hall to be properly disposed of. Flag Day honors the Stars and Stripes, a symbol of the great American nation.

The American flag is a symbol of the country’s history, pride and success in overcoming political oppression. Through its many incarnations and variations, the Stars and Stripes has waved over government buildings, schools and private residences. According to History. com, in 1775, the Second Continental Army led to the creation of the first “American” flag. However, that flag was too similar to the British Union Jack flag, George Washington requested a revision. In 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that the “flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white.” Furthermore, the “union” was represented by 13 stars of white in a blue field, “representing a new constellation.” More than a century later, a small-town Wisconsin teacher named Bernard Cigrand came up with the idea for an annual flag day in 1885.

country have been approaching graduation plans in various ways. The Tucson Unified School District postponed its graduation ceremonies to late June rather than canceling them altogether. Schools in Spotsylvania and Fauquier Counties in Virginia held modified versions of in-person ceremonies in May, which limited the number of family members in attendance and required relatives to hand out diplomas as a safety precaution. Students in Cherry Creek School District in Colorado found out they will have a modified inperson, students-only graduation ceremony in July. Relatives can watch the ceremony on a live stream. The Army will proceed with this year’s graduation ceremony at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in June, with President Donald Trump giving the commencement speech for cadets. The 1,000 cadets will return to campus to attend the ceremony, which will include procession changes and other social distancing modifications in line with current health requirements. Whether a school hosts a graduation ceremony in-person

or not, families can organize their own at-home graduations. All relatives who are graduating (whether from high school, college or even those moving up from fifth grade to middle school and eighth grade to high school) can participate. Here are a few tips: • Pool resources to borrow the right number of caps or gowns from friends or family. • Play “Pomp and Circumstance” over a bluetooth speaker. • Have the graduates march around the perimeter of a yard or down a neighborhood street. • Ask a relative to give a keynote speech. • Take graduation photos outside of the school doors or on campus where allowed. • Cater a graduation luncheon or dinner from a favorite neighborhood eatery. • Employ all necessary safety precautions, such as seating guests six feet apart from one another and wearing masks. Graduation ceremonies have changed due to COVID-19, but graduates can still commemorate this milestone moment in their lives.

When the novel coronavirus COVID-19 struck the world at the end of 2019, few people anticipated just how much the virus would upend daily life in the months to come. Because there currently is no cure or standardized treatment for the disease, the best course of action has involved maintaining social distance to help cut down on the rate of spread. Social distancing has changed the way the public shops, interacts socially with friends and family members and attends school. For the thousands of students comprising the class of 2020, social distancing also changes how they will graduate. Graduation decisions are something high schools and colleges have grappled with in the face of social distancing. Graduation has become a modify-asyou-go model in many towns and cities. In some instances, all in-person ceremonies have been restricted and virtualonly graduations will take place. For example, New Jersey’s Department of Education was only allowing virtual graduation events as graduation season approached. Other parts of the

Middle School Student Wins New York State Essay Contest When Southampton Mayor Jessie Warren visited Our Lady of the Hampton’s School in early March to discuss his work as mayor and to answer a few questions for the OLH Prep middle school students it was an educational experience for the entire class. The students from Valerie Hanley’s History class were learning more about local government, and preparing to write and submit an essay to the ‘If I Were Mayor’ essay contest being run by the New York State Conference of Mayors (NYCOM). NYCOM invited all eighth grade students in New York State to participate in their fourth annual essay contest addressing the topic, ‘If I Were Mayor, I Would ....’ Eighth Grade student Winslow Ryan proposed the use of natural solutions to fix and prevent the problem of chemical runoff and algae blooms in Lake Agawam in Southampton, NY. Lake Agawam has been studied by scientists from Stony Brook University who said that the toxic algae bloom on Southampton Village’s Lake was the densest growth ever recorded in a Long Island water body. As Winslow noted in his essay; “Its current state it is unsafe for anyone,

including local wildlife who suffer the most because of their now sullied home.” The issue stems from algae blooms caused by fertilizer and pesticide runoff from homes surrounding the pond. The algae is so dense that it blocks the sunlight for other plants underwater that need it. Winslow proposed a twolevel solution. To address water quality he proposed “An environmentally friendly solution that would use native plants of Long Island to prevent further algae blooms. We could try increasing populations of oxygenating plants in the lake. Plants such as white water lilies or lotus have circular leaves that cover the water and keep algae from receiving the sunlight it needs to survive.” To address the chemical runoff Winslow recommended “… the utilization of straw wattles. Straw wattles are man-made logs filled with wheat or rice and encased in biodegradable material. They are buried on the bank of the pond and used to slow down and disperse sediment and water.” His proposal also recommended putting regulations on the number and frequency of pesticides and fertilizers that homes in the area can use.

Winslow Ryan of Southampton, NY, is an eighth-grade student at Our Lady of the Hamptons School. He participates in numerous clubs and activities such as the Hamptonix (an all-male vocal group), the drama club, the rock band, the Student Council and he is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. Winslow has competed in six straight science fairs at Brookhaven National Laboratory and he volunteers his time as a cantor at Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Church in Southampton. In the future, Winslow would like to become a theater performer, a public defense lawyer, or biomedical engineer. The History Of The Graduation Cap

Mortarboards are shaped like a square, perhaps to give them a scholarly appearance like a book or to represent the shape of a quad on the campus of England’s Oxford University, where many graduation dress customs are believed to have originated. Others theorize that the mortarboard, which is named after the ﬂat board used by bricklayers and masons,

represents the skill of a master workman. Many graduation caps were initially black or gray. According to the graduation information site Graduation Source, when color photography became the norm in the 20th century, schools began to use gowns and caps in different shades because they would show up in photographs. Schools often coordinate caps and gowns so their colors reﬂect their official school colors. While certain degrees warrant different styles of gown, cowls and hoods, mortarboard caps are relatively standard. In addition to the cap, there is a single button at the top. Tassels hang from these buttons. At commencement, tassels are traditionally worn on the right side of the cap and then moved to the left once graduates receive their diplomas. Graduation caps are part of the larger scope of academic dress that comprises school traditions. Millions of graduates across the globe will don their caps and toss them into the air later in celebration of their hard work.

Members of the class of 2020 have many decisions to make. Many high school students enroll in trade schools or colleges after graduation, while college graduates start their careers or begin their pursuit of advanced degrees when their undergrad days draw to a close. More and more high school and college graduates are taking gap years. According to the American Gap Year Association, a gap year is defined as an experimental semester or full academic year taken between high school and college in order to deepen practical, professional and personal awareness.

Students often take a break from school as a chance to travel or gain some professional experience. Others use gap years as a chance for personal exploration before moving on to the next chapter in their lives. Gap years may once have been looked at unfavorably, but they have evolved from such perceptions into opportunities to volunteer abroad, learn a new language in a foreign land, visit one’s ancestral homeland, or work as an intern. While many students take gap years prior to entering college, even college graduates can benefit from taking time

off after earning their degrees. Gap years are now seen as a way to improve a curriculum vitae and gain relevant work experience in a particular field. The resource GapYear.com indicates employers actively employ people who have taken a gap year, prefering candidates who have real-world experience. Preparation is necessary before diving head first into a gap year. Students can speak with people who have already taken gap years and ask questions. Graduates should approach the decision of whether or not to take a gap year just as they would any other large, life-changing decision. Experts say that it can take between nine and 12 months to plan a gapyear itinerary. Finances are a consideration, and gap years require ample savings and a carefully constructed budget in order to be transformed from a dream into a reality. Gap years are a growing trend that can help students improve their résumés, see the world and gain invaluable experience.

The Value Of Reading To Kids Is Now Visible Recent studies from the Reading & Literacy Discovery Center of Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital were the first provide neurobiological evidence of the potential benefits of reading to children age five and younger and the potential detriments of screen time on the development of such youngsters’ brains. Images released with the study indicated substantial growth in organized white matter in the language and literacy areas of the brains of children who were read to during the highly formative first five years of their lives. That’s important, as the study noted that white matter is comprised of fibers

that form connections between brain cells and the nervous system. Increasing and organizing that white matter, which reading to youngsters facilitates, increases the brain’s functionality and ability to learn. While the study noted the value of reading to children age five and younger, it also showed how children who spent an average of two hours a day playing on screens were adversely affected by that behavior. In images of such children’s brains, white matter was considerably underdeveloped and disorganized, which can contribute to slow processing and learning difficulties.

New York Cancer & Blood Specialists Opens New Comprehensive Cancer Center New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) opened its newest comprehensive cancer center at 365 E Main St. Patchogue, NY 11772 on Monday, June 1. Located in East Patchogue, the comprehensive cancer center will be the first in the community to provide the most advanced care on the south shore. As patients enter this modern, state-of-the-art cancer center, they will be greeted by friendly, professional staff in our luxurious lounge. The new NYCBS center encompasses numerous amenities and services to patients to provide a comfortable and attentive environment that is most conducive for healing. The greatest cutting-edge medical technology and equipment -- including advanced PET/CT Scanner and state-of-the-art Halcyon radiation therapy are just some of the new features in this brand new facility. A fullservice research department will offer clinical trials with the newest cancer therapeutics. A full-service on-site pharmacy with medication pick-up after their visit will be available to our patients so they can ask any questions to our expert cancer pharmacy staff. FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, however her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Sometimes something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products.

During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for. Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!” Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need. One way we can start is by donating food, clothes, shoes, blankets, socks or any other important items to Eileen for her to distribute. She visits homeless individuals twice a day and any donations received will be handed out to those in need. Additionally, Eileen is looking for a donation of a mini-bus (can be used). This bus would be used for her non-profit traveling salon and her outreach work for the homeless. If you or someone you know can make this kind of donation, please reach out to Eileen directly.
