Scholarship Recipients has awarded more than $1,000,000 to Long Island high school and college students. In addition to meeting the academic qualifications and outstanding service to both their school and their community, each student must attend a two- or fouryear college or university after graduating this spring. Winners of the Making a Difference High School Scholarship are eligible to apply for NEFCU’s Premier Making a Difference Scholarship, a $20,000 scholarship (paid over four years) offered to recipients of NEFCU’s High School and Family Scholarships to help fund their college education. NEFCU also offers several other scholarships for undergraduate and graduate college students. “Promoting higher education is such an

important part of our community outreach, and it gives us such great pride to help so many local Long Island students achieve this goal,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice president of marketing and community relations for NEFCU. “Our Making a Difference Scholarship program is a great way for us to foster college education and reward those deserving students who have worked so hard in school.” This year’s applications were open to nearly all Long Island high schools. Out of the 82 participating high schools, 23 are located in Suffolk County and 59 are located in Nassau County. The Long Island-based credit union NEFCU has awarded 82 students from high schools across Long Island each with a $500 voucher to use toward their college education, as part of its annual Making a Difference Scholarship program. In total, NEFCU granted $41,000 to graduating seniors from local high schools across Long Island. Star Island Yacht Club has announced that it will hold its 29th Annual Shark Tournament on June 18th20th. This annual Father’s Day event has become a Montauk tradition and a major happening, with over 100 boats participating annually, drawing thousands of spectators. Cash prizes will be awarded for the heaviest

shark in the tournament and the heaviest shark for each day. The top three prizes will also be awarded for the heaviest mako, heaviest blue shark and heaviest shark of another species. Over the course of two days, 117 boats and 702 anglers brought in 33 fish, including ten Makos, 14 Threshers and nine Blue Sharks. The heaviest shark was a 377-pound Thresher landed by Ed Groppe aboard Captain David Walters’ “The Reel Deal.” Of the sharks that were weighed in, more than 750 pounds of edible shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches’ food pantry to help feed those in need. The entry fee is $1,250 per boat. For sports fishermen who would like to get in on the competition but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for either one day or both days of the tournament. Tickets Anyone? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Summer concert season is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. The instant the Jones Beach schedule was posted, I eagerly scanned it for shows I wanted to see, and then scoured the internet for any special pre-sales, Groupons, etc. that I could find. The problem – well, a temporary inconvenience, as the case may be – is that some summer tours seem to be announced earlier each year and, while there are plenty eager to attend, few people are willing, or able, to commit to such expenses in the middle of Christmas shopping. Me, I ignore such … what’s the word … logic? Rather, I

am of the philosophy that, if you want to do something badly enough, why should you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price? Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later! Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly. Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate

goal, of course, is to not find myself solo the day of the show, contemplating a.) going by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation. By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know. But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be. This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

Shark Tournament

Shining With Spirit Mary Kate Ryan, an eighth-grade student at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central Schools District, was selected as the school’s nominee for the 20142015 Prudential Spirit of Community Award. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States’ largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. Ryan’s application was selected to represent all of OMS at the state-level competition

among hundreds of middle and high school applicants. In her application, Ryan explained the community service work she participates in and how she feels about giving to the community. Ryan totaled approximately 200 hours in the past three years of community service and continues to dedicate her time volunteering at her church and a local nursing home. In addition to her community service and academic responsibilities, Ryan is a member and board treasurer of the

National Junior Honor Society. Although she did not advance at the state-level, Ryan received a Presidential Bronze Certificate for her participation in the competition. “Not everyone is as fortunate as others and I want to help them feel good about themselves and enhance their lives,” said Ryan. “Community service is very rewarding and it means so much to me to put a smile on someone else’s face. It’s not work, it is fun and I love it.”

All-Star Students The Oldfield Middle School guidance department in the Harborfields Central School District hosted their 10th Annual “AllStar Awards” ceremony to celebrate the academic and extracurricular accomplishments of more than 70 middle school students in the presence of friends, family and faculty members on May 21st.

To receive an All-Star award, students must be nominated by one of their teachers on the merit of character, motivation, respect and social responsibility as well as academic achievements for the 2014-2015 school year. Following a short introduction and examples of how the student displays qualities of an All-Star Award recipient, students

one-by-one made their way to the podium to receive their star trophy and certificate, presented by Principal Joanne Giordano and social studies teacher and Dean of Students Jeffrey Shade. “We are so proud of our students here today,” said guidance counselor Dahlia Roemer.

In an effort to raise money for a local hunger relief organization, members of the Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School fourthgrade band and orchestra in the Harborfields Central School District participated in a PracticeA-Thon. Coordinated by music teachers Cathy Ferraro

and Erik Johansen, fourth-grade students asked sponsors to pledge money for every minute they practiced playing an instrument for the entire month. Students totaled their minutes and collected the donations, with some students totaling between 500-1,000 minutes of practice. Through their

collaborative efforts, the fourth-grade band and orchestra students donated $1,200 to the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Long Island Cares. “The students were excited to realize how their daily practice could end up being such a helpful contribution to so many people,” said Ferraro.

Mystery Class Challenge Following months of interdisciplinary research, students in Alison Kraham’s fifth-grade class at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District completed the Annenberg Foundation Mystery Class Program, an online hide-and-seek challenge with fifth-grade classes across the globe. From January to April, students used English, math, science, social studies and technology skills to identify 10 mystery classes. Conducted in stages, students received clues to help them identify the location of each

mystery class. Divided in groups of 10, students were given sunrise and sunset clues for six weeks, allowing them to calculate and graph each location’s photoperiod, and compare it to Greenlawn. Students plotted data on a line graph, interpreted trends and calculated elapsed local and military time to determine if the mystery site was in the northern or southern hemisphere. To approximate the line of longitude, students completed complex math calculations on the vernal equinox. For four consecutive

Fridays, student received clues and used the Internet, almanacs, and maps to determine each location’s continent, country and city. In early May, parents were invited to share in the Mystery Classes reveal as well as watch students present PowerPoint presentations that defended their site predictions. “The learning, process and the journey make this activity so meaningful,” said Kraham. “Every year the students love participating in this global game.”

Look Hoo Visited importance of respecting and protecting their habitats. During the presentation from Volunteers for Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Center supervisor Lauren Schulz, students observed two Eastern Screech Owls, a Barred Owl and a Great Horned Owl. First-graders learned about the unique features and habits of each owl as well as heard an owl make the “hoo” noise. While answering students’

questions, Schultz distributed feathers from different owls and parts of an owl’s skeleton for the students to touch and hold. “Our mission is to preserve Long Island wildlife, so we come here to teach people about the animals that are in their backyard,” said Schultz. “They study owls here at their school so it’s a nice way for them to see animals that they otherwise wouldn’t have a chance to see.”

Hands Of Time

As part of their clock and time study unit, more than 50 first- and second-grade students in Byron Lane’s academic intervention services math classes at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District

created a Timeline of Time. To build the 160’ timeline, students drew pictures of analog clocks and glued the hour and minute hands to represent every five minutes from 12 a.m. to 12 p.m. For every half hour, students created

pictures of activities people participate in during the morning and afternoon. The timeline also featured the history of timepieces, the meaning of a.m. and p.m., and general guidelines on how to tell time.

Exceptional Seniors Elwood-John H. Glenn High School seniors were recognized for their outstanding achievements, citizenship and service at the school’s annual senior awards ceremony on May 28th. In front of an audience of parents, administrators and school board members, department chairs and teachers called students

to the stage to receive gold and silver medal awards in art, business, English, family and consumer science, foreign language, mathematics, music, physical education, science, social studies and the Wilson Tech program. Adult Ed Graduation Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone delivered the keynote address and Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards helped hand out the diplomas as the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center held its 27th annual adult education commencement ceremony on June 2nd. Thirty Gurwin residents, all wearing caps and gowns, received certificates for completing the eightmonth program, which included classes on nine topics ranging from an

introduction to psychology to America’s military to Space: The Final Frontier. In his remarks, Supervisor Petrone noted the sacrifices the students had made during their lives to see that their children and grandchildren received proper educations and noted that now was the time for them to receive recognition for continuing their goal of lifelong learning. The Supervisor ended his remarks by quoting from a poem written by

the late television host, Art Linkletter, that said: There’s always one hill higher, with a better view Something waiting to be learned that I never knew Till my days are over, never fully fill my cup Let me go on growing up A number of the graduates helped lead parts of the ceremony, including addresses by valedictorian Maria Perez and salutatorian Joseph Donlon.

To honor the men and women who served in the United States military, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School held its annual Memorial Day ceremony on May 25th. Members of the community including the American Legion, Elwood Taxpayers Association and the Elwood Union Free

School District gathered to commemorate the day. Under the direction of music teacher Rachel Nagle, the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School select chorus performed the National Anthem. In addition, student Sean Donovan performed his rendition of “Taps” on the trumpet.

Commemorating Heroes

During the ceremony, students Thomas Krauss, Jacob Pagan and Anthony Sgambati in the graduating class of 2015 presented the ceremonial red, white and blue wreath to display in front of the school. Upon graduation in June, these three seniors plan to serve their country and enter the military this summer.

COACH HONORED - At the June 2nd General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Carol Rainson–Rose, the Girls Lacrosse Coach at Northport High School was presented with a proclamation recognizing her 25 years of remarkable dedication and commitment to her team members. Coach Rose’s impressive accomplishments include the Manhasset Sports Hall of Fame and the Suffolk County Athletic Hall of Fame. She’s been Newsday’s All Long Island Coach of the Year and was named the Northport Chamber of Commerce “Woman of the Year” by the Northport Times. She is an amazing teacher, coach and mentor. Congratulations!

the event, Principal Dr. Rory Manning revealed Eli Salmowitz and Jamie Letourneau, respectively, as the Class of 2015 valedictorian and salutatorian. The two seniors were commended for their academic dedication as well as their contributions to the school community. Dr. Manning also announced the eight additional members of the Wall of Scholars, which includes the top 10

More than sixty 4th grade students from the Leadership Team at Washington Primary School in the Huntington School District attended today’s General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature to advocate for change in their community! For months, these students have worked tirelessly alongside their teachers and high school student mentors to garner support for a traffic signal to be installed at the intersection of Whitson Road and Park Avenue in Huntington Station.

will hold the ceremony unveiling the plaque with the 378 names that are being added to the Vietnam War Memorial, bringing the total number of names to 1,490. Originally unveiled in 2003, the wall lists the names of Vietnam War era veterans who live or lived in Huntington. That includes persons on the original three plaques and those who were added in the subsequent five years before the wall was closed in 2008 and a fourth plaque was installed. In 2013, representatives from the Huntington High School Class of

1964 reunion committee approached Supervisor Frank P. Petrone about the possibility of reopening the wall to add names of about 20 of their classmates. The Supervisor determined that there was room for the wall to accommodate additional names and opened the wall for an additional period that ended December 31st, 2014. Valedictorians Honored School superintendents, administrators and parents acknowledged and honored the highest achieving students of Suffolk County’s Class of 2015 during the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association’s 21st Annual Valedictorian Luncheon, held at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch Hotel in Hauppauge. The celebratory event was punctuated with music

provided by the Islip High School Jazz Ensemble, who performed under the direction of Steve Campanella. Congratulating the students on their hard work and academic achievements were Dr. Roberta A.
