Representing Cold Spring Harbor High School The annual James C. Metzger Leadership Award for Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse was presented to one player on each of the eight teams that competed in the finals of the 2022 Section VIII Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse championships. Each award recipient reflected the tenacity, honesty, commitment and positive attitude required in Nassau lacrosse. Each player also possessed the ability to inspire others on and off the field. One of the eight award recipients is senior midfielder Garret Geraci of Cold Spring

Harbor High School. He is committed to Pace University. The lacrosse championships were held on Tuesday-Thursday, May 31-June 2, at Hofstra University. In the Class D championship game, Cold Spring Harbor defeated Friends Academy of Locust Valley 15-1. The awards were presented by 1970s Long Island lacrosse stars James C. Metzger and Vincent J. Sombrotto. A three-sport athlete at Half Hollow Hills East in Dix Hills, Metzger received the 1977 Lt. Ray Enners Award for outstanding Suffolk

County lacrosse player when he scored 102 points and received All-American honors. An All-American lacrosse player at Hofstra University, Metzger is the founder and chairman of Whitmore – The Agency, an insurance and financial services firm in Garden City. Sombrotto attended Chaminade High School in Mineola and was a Hofstra University All-American midfielder. He was named to the 1982 All-World Team and is a member of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He is a senior vice president at Whitmore.

Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration.

(The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The

One of this organization’s oldest and largest programs is its family foster care program, which has served children and families throughout New York City and Long Island since 1952. Little Flower is committed to ﬁnding safe and nurturing homes for children and young adults that are unable to remain home with their families because they believe every child should have guidance, stability and love. Little Flower strives to meet the immediate needs of children entering foster care by partnering with dedicated foster parents who bring experience and skills in supporting children experiencing trauma. Potential foster parents undergo a thorough application and screening process, complete training, and participate in a home study before becoming a foster parent. The Little Flower team provides ongoing support and services to foster parents to ensure they can create the most nurturing environment for the foster children in their care. Additionally, Little Flower partners with foster parents and children’s families to support the children while their family receives the support and services they need to safely parent upon the child’s return from foster care. They also work with extended family to ﬁnd relatives or other permanent homes for children who cannot safely return to their parents. This

For children requiring specialized care, Little Flower offers a Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home (TFBH) program based on their Wading River campus that works with children placed in foster care through Nassau or Suffolk County. Therapeutic foster parents are provided with additional training and certiﬁcation to best care for the specialized needs of the foster children in their home. In addition to providing temporary care for children in a safe and nurturing environment, foster parents work closely with the organization’s social work team and the child’s parents in support of family reuniﬁcation or permanency planning and ensure children are available to attend family visits. Foster parents model positive behavior, provide guidance and positive experiences, as well as support educational, dental, medical, and mental health needs of the child. Little Flower is proud to partner with such compassionate individuals willing to help children in need thrive and reach their full potential. Vivian M., a foster parent with Little Flower for more than 13 years, shared that she became a foster parent because she “loves children and wanted to make a difference.”

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta joined other officials, Troop Leaders, scouts and family members to congratulate two scouts from Troop 5 for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout at St. Anthony’s in East Northport. “What these men accomplished by this young age is incredible and this recognition will stay with them for the rest of their lives,” said Legislator Rob Trotta. “I am very proud of them and hope they will continue to give back to their community and be an inspiration for the younger scouts,” added Trotta. Scout Matt Baldwin created and installed two picnic tables near the track at St. Anthony’s High School in Melville. His Eagle Scout Project was done in memory of his late track coach, who passed away from cancer during his freshman year at the high school. will address Identity Theft from an elder abuse point of view focusing on motor vehicle theft, forged documents, insurance fraud, and other acts of identity theft. As a former Suffolk County Detective, I know first-hand how devastating identity theft can be for our seniors and that they are reluctant targets of such crimes,” said Legislator Trotta. “I encourage everyone to attend as anyone can be an unwilling victim,” Trotta added.

“Anyone can be the victim of ID theft, especially someone who is not equipped with preventive strategies. Hearing from and engaging with ID theft prevention experts is a fantastic way to avoid becoming a victim,” said Legislator Stephanie Bontempi. Legislator Manuel Esteban Sr. said, “It is my pleasure to partner on another important community program to help our residents.”

Sophomore and junior Academy of Finance business students recently participated in a professional business etiquette lunch. Students dressed professionally and practiced skills such as giving a proper handshake, setting a table, dining etiquette, engaging in conversation and tying a tie. Twenty-two students participated in a tie-tying

contest and winners were chosen by our guest speakers from the multinational accounting firm Deloitte. Both guest speakers shared their experiences on business lunches, interviews and internships with the students. They shared stories and tips on the importance of proper etiquette, professionalism and treatment of the host and wait staff.

Northport High School junior Todd Petry has been awarded the Rensselaer Medal, which awards him a $30,000 per year scholarship to attend the technological institution located in New York State. If Todd applies and is accepted to the institute, he will receive the scholarship to one of the most prestigious schools in the state. The scholarship is

Elwood Finest Student-Musicians Chosen For NYSCAME And SCMEA All-State Honors

Numerous studentmusicians from the Elwood School District earned All-County recognition this year from the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education and the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association. Elwood-John H. Glenn High School juniors and seniors Anson Kwan (choir), Gabrielle Bouzas (choir), Emma Giardina (choir), Blake Goehring (orchestra), Quinn Hines (choir), Aaram Lee (orchestra), Shannon McGrath (band), Aidan McNamara (choir), Toni Meyer (choir), Diana Muniz (choir) and Kaitie Schieble (choir) were selected for NYSCAME All-County ensembles based on their NYSSMA score and teacher recommendation. The NYSCAME All-County festival usually takes place in November but was canceled this school year. “We are proud to honor the musicians selected from John Glenn High School, who represent our

finest musicians,” teacher Rachel Nagle said. SCMEA is a competitive and prestigious All-County festival, selecting students from across Suffolk County. Freshman and sophomore musicians were selected for SCMEA All-County Division 3 ensembles, seventh and eighth graders in All-County Division 2, and fifth and sixth graders in All-County Division 1. Fifth and sixth graders participating in All-County Division 1 were Boyd Intermediate School fifth grader Madelyn Moreno and Elwood Middle School sixth graders Olivia Charlambous, Gregory Gross, John Haintz, Joey Meyer, Armando Muniz, Jason Scarola and Ashley Show. Seventh and eighth graders participating in All-County Division 2 were Elwood Middle School seventh graders James D’Angeli and Angelica Viviani, and eighth graders Camila Avila, Peter Bell, Louise Hartough, Raim Kim, Olivia LoBue and

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School was recently named one of the 1,000 finest high schools in the nation, according to the recently released U.S. News & World Report annual “Best High Schools” list. John Glenn earned a spot at No. 949, ranking among the

The Jazz Loft To Benefit From A Wide Variety Of Grants The Jazz Loft in Stony Brook will be benefiting from numerous grants in 2022 that will fund a variety of educational programming and music events. One grant will partner the Jazz Loft with the Helping Hand Mission in Huntington Station for a free concert at the Huntington Assembly of God, located at 1700 New York Avenue, in Huntington Station. “We are filled with gratitude that this funding will assist us in providing some new and exciting opportunities to bring more live music into the lives of more and more people,” said Jazz Loft Founder Thomas Manuel. The Huntington Station concert is funded by a $3,000 Restart New York grant. Restart NY Regrants are offered as part of NYSCA’s Recovery Fund Initiative meant to help support New York’s return to live performance and in-person events.

“This grant will enable the Jazz Loft to bring music to a community that may not ordinarily have the access or resources to experience it,” said Manuel. Manuel said he will be presenting the Jazz Loft’s program Operation Creole Love Song, featuring a six-piece ensemble band, performing a mix of traditional Haitian music, along with Cuban and American jazz. The free concert is scheduled for June 14 at 7 p.m. at Huntington Assembly of God, located at 1700 New York Avenue, in Huntington Station. Jazz Loft to benefit from gifts & grants for programming •The Loft School of Jazz has received a $10,000 award from the philanthropic foundation of Long Island singing legend Billy Joel and his wife, Alexis. The grant will be used for tuition assistance scholarships for students in the jazz program.

The Loft School of Jazz is a college preparatory program for young jazz musicians and gives them the opportunity to advance their improvisation, ensemble and musicianship skills and broaden their musical horizons with the guidance of an exceptional and devoted faculty at the Jazz Loft. “We are absolutely thrilled and filled with gratitude to Billy and Alexis Joel and The Joel Foundation for this grant which will enable us to offer tuition assistance scholarships to students in need,” said Manuel. World War II Weekend At The Museum Of American Armor Will Observe The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank “Calling All Sherman Veterans For A Tank Side Dedication Ceremony” The 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe will be the featured armor vehicle during this year’s World War II Encampment Weekend at the Museum of American Armor inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, Long Island, on Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank veterans to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary and participating in an oral histories project that memorializes their experiences. In addition to the Sherman, the weekend will feature military reenactments presented by the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and a parade of operational armor vehicles that comprise the museum’s extensive collection. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

Northport Students Take First Place Harborfields High Schoolers Collaborate In Fit Club Competition On One-Of-A-Kind “Wedding” Northport-East Northport fourth and fifth graders participated in the annual Suffolk Zone fit club competition, with students from Norwood Avenue, Pulaski Road and East Northport Middle School placing first out of approximately 60 competing teams. The competition brings together students from schools throughout Long Island to Lincoln Avenue school in Sayville for a friendly physical

competition. Competing students prepared by joining their schools’ Fit Club where they practiced various circuits and activities. The district had two teams competing. One was comprised of students from Norwood Avenue, Pulaski Road and East Northport Middle, while the other included students from Ocean Avenue, Fifth Avenue and Northport Middle School. Most importantly, all students

had a wonderful time. Club leader and physical education teacher Stacie Norman said, “This competition is very difficult, and we were ecstatic to hear of our 1st place finish. It was nice to see a group pulled from different schools come together to work and support each other as one. All involved should see this as a considerable accomplishment.”

Earlier this year, a very special “wedding” of two Harborfields High School programs – the school’s jazz band and Tornado News team – took place on a field trip to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Centerport. This first-of-its-kind project was the culmination of an idea long in the making. Jazz Band Director Dan Bilawsky had commissioned three-time Grammynominated composer Alan Ferber to write an arrangement of Abdullah Ibrahim’s classic piece “The Wedding” for his studentmusicians to record. The jazz band successfully completed their “Wedding” recording session at the church, and their performance was filmed for a multi-camera, single-microphone music video by the news team. The high school’s journalism program, guided by adviser Vincent Ambrosio, then produced a 30-minute feature documentary on the entire “Wedding” process, edited by Fiona McLoughlin. The two school groups also collaborated on a second music video, of the jazz band performing “Reflections,” written by Thelonious Monk and arranged by Oliver Nelson. “What started as an idea to commission an arrangement of a work I longed to perform with the Harborfields High School Jazz Band blossomed into an incredible experience

about connectedness,” said Bilawsky, who is also the K-12 music department coordinator for the Harborfields Central School District. “In the best of times, a project like this video and documentary would’ve been difficult to coordinate in a school setting. Working through it in the ever-evolving COVID climate made things that much more difficult. But seeing our students work so hard together to create the music video and documentary really speaks to the triumphs inherent in the act of persistence and grasp for greater meaning.” Harborfields’ “The Wedding” project garnered fervent praise from a number of other renowned figures in the music world, including South African drummer and composer Claude Cozens; saxophonist and University of South Africa Music Foundation Acting Director of Music Karen Devroop; trombonist, bandleader and Grammynominated arranger John Fedchock; jazz drummer, photographer and journalist C. Andrew Hovan; “Step Tempest” blogger Richard Kamins; University of Connecticut Director of Jazz Studies Earl MacDonald; South African bassist, composer and educator Carlo Mombelli; jazz pianist and educator Dr. Lewis Porter; “The Jazz Session

Eastline Theatre Brings Free Shakespeare To Parks Across Long Island After last year’s inaugural tour of Romeo & Juliet, EastLine Theatre returns to those same sunny Italian streets for The Two Gentlemen of Verona. This rollicking take on Shakespeare’s classic comedy will feature original live music and tour to a dozen scenic locations across Long Island. All performances will be free, fun, and family friendly. “We started our outdoor Shakespeare program in 2021 as a response to the pandemic, in an effort to produce safe and accessible takes on classic theatrical literature” says Nicole Savin, co-artistic director of EastLine Theatre. “After an overwhelming response to last year’s production, we are thrilled to return to outdoor theatre and bring Shakespeare back to some of Long Island’s most beautiful locations.” Scheduled performances are: 6/18 - Clark Botanic Garden, Albertson - 6PM 6/25 - Gerry Pond Park, Roslyn - 6PM 6/26 - Amityville Beach, Amityville - 5PM 7/2 - Sachem Public Library, Holbrook - 3PM 7/10 - Amityville Beach, Amityville - 5PM 7/16 - Half Hollow Hills Community Library, Dix Hills 3PM 7/17 - Chapin Rainbow Stage at Heckscher Park, Huntington 8PM 7/23 - Fire Island Lighthouse 4PM 7/24 - Phelps Lane Park, North Babylon - 4PM 7/30 - Whitney Town Park, Manhasset - 6PM 7/31Wyandanch Plaza, Wyandanch - 4PM

The Two Gentlemen of Verona by William Shakespeare is presented by EastLine Theatre, directed by Jess Reed, stage managed by Matt Rosenberg, and features costumes by Stefanie Workman, and original music by John Brautigam. This production is sponsored by Sweetwater and possible in part due to the support of the Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs and the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts. The cast of The Two Gentlemen of Verona features Kuan Hao Huang, Anjor Khadilkar, June Lienhard, Jen LoPresti, Michelle Osojnak, Kendra Perry, William Pope, and Allen Winter. EastLine Theatre is a nonprofit theatre company that BroadwayWorld calls ‘Long Island’s best kept secret’. EastLine aims to create theatre in unlikely spaces while re-examining the canon, exploring modern plays, and bringing original works to the attention of the community. In summer 2021, EastLine toured Long Island parks with an acclaimed production of Romeo & Juliet. In recent years, EastLine has produced Prospero (Live), an original musical based on The Tempest; the Long Island premiere of Paula Vogel’s Indecent; the black comedy Hand to God; a newly-commissioned adaptation of Antigone; a sold-out run of Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus in a tiny blackbox space; and a production of Treasure Island that BroadwayWorld said was ‘bursting at the seams with imagination’.
