Angels Revisited And now, a selection from the archives, published June 2008... This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!
If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them flying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their flight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

Night gulls flap hard through their wings Scaling flight in search for a tidbit Tide returns lapping against the shore Slapping sand, clapping its arrival As sea grasses rustle in the whoosh of the night air. Bay’s harmonious airs blend in earthly concert Sea breezes swirl an encore Sycamore’s dried leaves twirl in mini squalls As willowy reeds and sea roses bow to nature’s opus.

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

During the school’s annual senior awards ceremony on May 24th, Harborfields High School Principal Dr. Rory Manning announced that Sabrina Qi and Trevor Jones were respectively the valedictorian and salutatorian of the Harborfields graduating Class of 2016. Along with her designation of valedictorian, Qi was named a scholar in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program; she received the National School Development Council Academic Growth & Student Leadership Award and was presented the Daughters of American Revolution Good Citizenship Award. Dedicated to her academics during her senior year, she
is enrolled in six Advanced Placement courses and one college-level language class. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Global Justice Club and science research club, which afforded her the opportunity to present her research at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. In addition to her school commitments, Qi dances with the Lynch School of Ballet in Huntington. Since the age of 3, she has dedicated her time to perfecting her talent and plans to continue dancing as an extracurricular activity in college. Qi will attend Duke University in the fall with plans of majoring in biomedical engineering and biophysics. “I think Harborfields has truly prepared me for the future with all the classes I have taken,” said Qi. “As long as you take the classes that you are interested in, the teacher will prepare you for what you want to study in college.” As an active member of his school community, Jones is also enrolled in six Advanced Placement courses and is the class president. Annie McClintock, a special education paraeducator at Harborfields High School, was among 12 schoolrelated professionals to be honored by the White House as a School Support Champion of Change. Each honoree was selected by the White House for their leadership and work to ensure that students receive the support and motivation they need to succeed. According to the White House blog, school support professionals make up one-third of the nation’s education workforce and often go above and beyond to meet the needs of all students so they can achieve success inside and outside the classroom. During the event, Senior Advisor to the President Valerie Jarrett, Deputy Assistant to the President
for Education Policy Roberto Rodriguez and Dr. Monique Chism, deputy assistant secretary for the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, afforded remarks to the honorees and invited guests. With a passion for volunteerism, McClintock has coordinated volunteer efforts and participated in countless food, winter clothing and backpack school supply drives. Over the past 15 years, she has collected toys that are donated to the Congregational Church of Huntington. The church in turn donates the toys to the annual Family Service League’s Holiday Boutique. The Holiday Boutique allows parents of low-income children to “shop” with dignity for unwrapped gifts for their children. Additionally,

Throughout the school year, members of the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School International Club, under the advisement of Nicole Gendjoian, held fundraising events in an effort to raise money to donate an Inspired Gift through the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. The club members held bake sales after school and sold baked goods at school-related events.
Spearheaded by junior Rachel Berlin, the club sold Pura Vida bracelets to raise funds. The English translation for Pura Vida is Pure Life, a Costa Rican philosophy that encourages the appreciation of life’s simple treasures. Plaque Unveiled
The Town of Huntington marked its annual Memorial Day Wreath Ceremony May 29th by dedicating a plaque in the Town’s Veterans Plaza in memory of the 18 members of the Town’s Veterans Advisory Board who have passed away. “This plaque is in memory of those veterans who put this beautiful plaza together, who served as leaders in the Town of Huntington. May they rest in peace and may their memories always be alive,” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said in unveiling the bronze plaque with Bill Ober, the current board chairman, as relatives of those memorialized on the plaque looked on. The plaque unveiling was the highlight of the ceremony, which included performances by The Church of St. Patrick Adult Chorale and Children’s Choir, an invocation and benediction by the Rev. Dr. William Spencer, who is also a county legislator, a Memorial Day remembrance by Paul Kelly, chair of the Vietnam Veterans Committee of the Veterans Advisory Board,
and remarks by members of the Town Board and County Executive Steve Bellone. “Let us remember Memorial Day as a day to look back.” Supervisor Petrone said in his remarks. “It is a day to remember our fallen, but it is also a day to say thank you to the men and women who are here with us today who survived these terrible wars.” Referring to the Veterans Advisory Board members being memorialized on the plaque, County Executive Bellone said, “They are typical of American veterans, who not only have served our country, but who have come back home and worked to build the communities in which we live today. They have continued to serve and serve throughout their lives. Our country is what it is today because of the American veteran.” Councilwoman Susan A. Berland said, “Keep the memories of the loved ones that you have lost in service alive. They are no longer with us, but their stories always will be. We are a nation of stories, we are
a people of stories. Share those stories, spread them around. The more you tell the next generation the stories you have, the more those stories will last.” Councilman Eugene Cook said, “Every day, we should be thanking a veteran and a volunteer for all their hard work and for making this Town, this state and this country a fantastic country to live in. We are a free country because of the hard work and sacrifices each and every one of them have done.” Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards said, “This is a day of thanks, a day of gratitude, a day of remembrance. I am also very proud the Town of Huntington continues to partner with Suffolk County and the United Way on Vets Build. It is also so important not only to make sure that we are honoring the veterans who sacrificed their lives, but to make sure that those who come home have an opportunity to live in peace and to be able to work and provide for their families.”
Harborfields High School seniors were recognized for their outstanding achievements, citizenship and service at the school’s annual senior awards ceremony on May 24th. In addition, more than 20 memorial and organizational scholarships were presented to deserving seniors. Principal Dr. Rory Manning announced Sabrina Qi and Trevor
Jones as the Class of 2016 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. The two seniors were commended for their academic dedication and contributions to the school community. Dr. Manning also announced the other eight members rounding out the Wall of Scholars, comprised of the top 10 students in the graduating class. The following are the top 10 students in the
graduating Class of 2016: Sabrina Qi, Trevor Jones, Abigail Wax, Alexander Bloom, Erin Walden, Kaitlin Dluginsky, Kelly Stone, Rachel Bram, Ryan Scanlon and Evan Chang. Their names were added to the Wall of Scholars, which is affixed in the hallway of the high school. The district extends its congratulations to all the award-winning seniors.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson joined U.S. Rep. Steve Israel and representatives from the Press Club of Long Island and the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association May 31 in dedicating a historic marker commemorating the original headquarters of The Long Islander, Long Island’s oldest newspaper. The newspaper, which continues to publish, began in 1838, when Walt Whitman purchased a printing press in New York and began to publish the paper, on an unpredictable schedule – sometimes weekly, sometimes biweekly and sometimes every three weeks. He did the writing, editing, typesetting, printing and delivery. The headquarters
was a barn near the location of the historic marker, in the Gerard Street municipal parking lot. Supervisor Petrone, in brief remarks, thanked the Press Club of Long Island for providing the marker, with financial assistance from the Zimmerman Edelson Public Relations firm and the law firm of McCarthy and Reynolds. He noted that the Press Club has been trying to get historic markets at significant sites in Long Island journalism history. This marker is the second site; the first was the garage that provided Newsday’s first headquarters. The Supervisor noted that he hoped children would see the marker and ask their parents about the newspaper and
about Whitman, whom Huntington proudly calls its native son. In his remarks, Rep. Israel spoke of his affection for Whitman, noting that he has a framed cover of Whitman’s poetry collection, Leaves of Grass, framed in his office in Washington. The cover, he noted, was a gift from the Whitman Birthplace executive director Cynthia Shor. Also speaking at the ceremony were Shor; Bill Bleyer, chair of the Press Club’s historic site committee and current Long Islander publisher Peter Sloggatt. The birthplace was also represented by its board chairman, Dr. William Walter, and by Whitman recreator Darryl Blaine Ford.

Senior Sabrina Greenberg and Junior Jordan Roiland, students at Walt Whitman High School in the South Huntington School District, and their advisor Erica Cryer were recently honored by Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro as the 2016 winners of the Suffolk County “Truth about Stimulant Drinks” video contest. The presentation took place at the Suffolk County Legislature’s General Session on Wednesday, June 1st in Hauppauge. In conjunction with a public awareness campaign, the County Legislature annually invites high school students to
create a 30 second public service announcement (PSA) video incorporating their interpretation of the negative health effects associated with consuming stimulant drinks. A submission is selected from each legislative district to go on and compete at the County level where one video is ultimately chosen from amongst all of the district winners to be shown as a PSA on Cablevision. This marks the second consecutive year that a student in Legislator D’Amaro’s district was declared the winner by the Legislature’s non-partisan Budget Review Office. Last
year’s honor went to the Deer Park High School SADD Club. In recognition of this achievement, Legislator D’Amaro presented each student with a Proclamation and also presented Ms. Cryer with a Proclamation for display in the school. The winning video was shown at the meeting following the presentation. These adverse health impacts may include: insomnia, headaches, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irritability and rapid heartbeat.

Senior Accomplishments Elwood-John H. Glenn High School held its 54th annual Senior Awards Presentation on May 24th to recognize and honor graduating seniors for their accomplishments. In addition, organizational and memorial scholarships were presented to deserving members of the senior class. Assistant Principal Carisa Burzynski officially began the ceremony, extending words of welcome and thanks to all those who helped organize
the event. She also noted the exceptional talent and scholar the students exhibited to be honored. “Naturally, we would like to acknowledge the hard work, dedication and incredible talent of our students,” said Burzynski. “This is an amazing group of young men and women and the accomplishments of the students sitting in this audience is pretty impressive.” Among an audience of family, friends and district administrators,
department chairs, guidance counselors and teachers called students to the stage to present them with awards for their academic achievements. A d d i t i o n a l l y, administrators, community members and organization representatives awarded more than 25 scholarships during the evening. On the eve of the Memorial Day observances weekend the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations - NECO honored a diverse group of members of the famed Fighting 69th U.S. Army regiment, including those soldiers not native born but who proudly wear the American uniform. Surrounded by military armor, NECO presented a $15,000 check to the Long Island Family Readiness Group that supports the men and women of the Fighting 69th who are deployed on overseas assignments to protect our nation. “NECO has always celebrated the contributions that immigrants have made to our nation.
