Funding from the NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) has enabled the Child Care Council of Suffolk to offer free training to child care professionals located within zip codes affected by Super Storm Sandy to help them implement the Pyramid Model (adopted by New York State for social emotional development in young children through the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning) into their child care programs. Elwood Middle School seventh-graders recently learned about how to analyze and identify DNA with the help of the Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center. During the course of two days, the classes conducted an experiment with an educator from the DNA

Center. The in-class forensic lab allowed students to look at chromosomes and sequencing DNA to gain a better understanding of how DNA works. They also learned about the scientists that made strides in the research world of genetics. The classes were

introduced to SYBR Green, a special gel that dyes the DNA, allowing it to be seen and glow under an ultraviolet light. Students took turns analyzing their DNA under the light with their peers and recording their results.

Safety First Northport High School students in the NorthportEast Northport School District participated in the school’s annual CPR/AED Awareness Day on May 24th. CPR/AED Awareness Day is an outgrowth of a grant that the high school won about eight years ago from the American Heart Association. Lacrosse coach George Searing and Assistant Principal Denise Keenan wrote the grant in response to a tragedy the school community experienced back in 2000. Northport High School student Louis Acompora suffered commotio cordis

leading to sudden cardiac arrest on the lacrosse field. The grant money was designated to promote awareness of the need for CPR and AED information, awareness, training and equipment in schools. Health teachers Tracey Braun, Diana Vitale and Melissa Pissanos expanded the program and gave students the opportunity to rotate through various stations in the school with different information and training. The students started at the first station which gave them a card titled, “I Can Save a Life.” The card was to be stamped at each station

and after completion, each participant was entered into a raffle for a chance to win a number of prizes. Stations included the Northport Fire Department with junior volunteer firefighters, known as the Smokeaters. These Northport High School students showed their peers how to use a LUCAS device, which is used for compressions. Junior and senior sports medicine students also played a role in the day by facilitating stations. They showed others how to work an AED machine and how to conduct proper CPR on a distressed individual.

National Italian Exam winner Makenzy Chaikin and third-place winner Samantha Rivera. All the students took the exams in March to test their skills in the Italian language. They began taking these tests in eighth grade to test their knowledge while competing to place nationally. As a result of their top scores on the exams, Michael and Ivan have been awarded a two-week all-expenses-paid trip to Italy this summer to

Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, is seeking volunteers to train as advocates for our Long Island Seniors living in nursing homes and long term adult care homes throughout Suffolk County.

I actually feel the thoughts of people dear to me Without being told, their deepest concerns I see. Spells are vibrant declarations of a nameless force They have in a chosen media their source. A Time to Remember

My alma mater, Lindy High School, recently held its senior prom last week, bringing to mind my own end-of-year soirees which took place so many years ago. Our senior prom was, of course, a highlight; even more so for the fact that it was held at the top of the World Trade Center, at the one and only Windows on the World. What a magical night it was, and what an unforgettable time we had celebrating among the clouds, overlooking the greatest city in the world. Often forgotten in the recollections of high school, however, was the equally memorable evening we had at our junior prom. Held at the famed Narragansett Inn, it brought the elegance of our first “real” dance to our hometown, complete with swirling gowns and high heels, and hair and makeup appointments for all on the afternoon of the big event. Remember, at this point,

sweet sixteen’s had yet to take on the extravagance of a small wedding, and proms truly were the formal affairs of the age. Everything down to the smallest detail was coordinated, from corsage colors to jewelry and accessories, to the tiny flowers and rhinestone clips which adorned many of the girls’ hair. The class voted on their pick for “Junior Prom Song” in the weeks leading up to the event, forgoing the more current hits for a classic from Long Island’s own Billy Joel, “This is the Time.” I remember taking pictures beforehand at my grandparents’ house, walking down the big staircase and masquerading in all sorts of corny poses for the camera. This, of course, predated the advent of cell phones and the notorious “selfies” of today; but every single collection of friends had the same standard photo in front of their limo, couples angled inward, corsages on display.

There was something elegant in the simplicity. Junior prom was a bit more casual for our group. Instead of a limo, we carpooled. Instead of any post-prom festivities, we stopped off at McDonald’s on the way home – in the excitement of the evening, it seems no one had really taken the time to sit down and eat. We were too busy taking photos by the grand piano in the lobby, cheering on the prom court…and dancing, of course. I remember coming home that night and sitting up for hours, recollecting every last detail of the evening to my parents, still in my gown and high heels, my hair a little disheveled but none the worse for wear, not wanting the day to end. Sure, senior prom may have had the pomp and circumstance and the expectation of great things; but junior prom, for me, far exceeded all that. It was, truly the time to remember.

On March 23rd, eight scouting volunteers from the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, were recognized with the Silver Beaver Award during the annual Fellowship Dinner at the Stonebridge County Club in Hauppauge. Locally, Matinecock District’s District Advancement Chair David Hunt of Northport, Troop 113 (Centerport)’s John Sandgren of East Northport, and past District Chairman/ currently Suffolk County Council (BSA)’s Council President/ James Montalto

of Northport were three of the eight who were honored. Established in 1931, the Silver Beaver Award is a national recognition presented for distinguished service to people within a local Boy Scouts of America Council. The recipient must be a registered adult member of the BSA. The selection of the candidates is based on volunteer efforts to scouting, involvement in community activities, and volunteer service to youth outside of scouting. The selection committee was made up of all previous

Silver Beaver recipients across all districts within the Suffolk County Council. In order to be was recognized with the Silver Beaver Award, the Scouting volunteer is nominated by his peers and his record of service to the community has to include service to Scouting and Exploring, service to youth other than the scouting program, and any service and affiliation to the community in civic, religious, fraternal, political, business and professional organizations.

Beach Beautified As part of her “Keep Huntington Beautiful” campaign, Councilwoman Susan A. Berland hosted her annual flower planting and beach clean-up at Gold Star Battalion Beach in Huntington. Volunteers planted Blue Hawaii, Orange and Yellow Marigolds and Zinnia plants at the World War II Veterans “Gold Star Battalion Memorial” and in the flower beds. Joining Councilwoman Berland were members of the “Young Leaders,” comprised of high school students from the Huntington and South Huntington school districts, members of the Huntington High School Environment Club and their advisor Gina

Carone, members of the Huntington Youth Council, Cub Scout Pack 406, Greta Case, Francesca Garcia and volunteers from Starbucks in Huntington Village and other community-spirited volunteers. Starbucks in Huntington Village provided coffee for the volunteers prior to the clean-up. Afterwards, all of the volunteers were treated to pizza courtesy of Almarco Italian Grill on Wall Street in Huntington. “We had a great time planting flowers on a beautiful Saturday morning,” said Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. “I want to thank Lars Olsen, the Supervisor of Beach and Marina Maintenance for the Town of Huntington Department

As hurricane season begins, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone encourages all Town residents to obtain a copy of the 2017 edition of the Town’s Hurricane Preparedness Handbook, which is now available in printed or electronic form. “We have changed the cover of the Handbook this year. We want to ask the question “Are You and Your Family Ready “?” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone wrote in his message that opens the Handbook. “We want to remind you, your families, business associates, friends and colleagues to be ever vigilant. We still need to be prepared for the possibility that a storm could hit this year. The worst thing we can do is become complacent.” He added in the message,

“We want you – whether you are a resident or a business, an individual or a large family - to be ready for any weather emergency. Take the time now to read this booklet, follow its advice and make the preparations so that you, your family, your neighbors and your pets have the best chance of weathering the next storm.” The Handbook includes details on what should be included in a family’s hurricane response plan, an emergency supply checklist, suggested contents of a “Go Kit’ in case of an evacuation and tips on pet safety. A page is dedicated to preparedness tips for business owners. The handbook also includes on-line, telephone and electronic media links for obtaining information.

The Sixth Grade Experience Northport-East Northport fifth-graders from all six elementary schools recently visited Northport Middle School or East Northport Middle School to get a better understanding of what their new school and experience a day in the life of a sixth-grader. At Northport Middle School, fifth-grade students from Norwood Avenue, Ocean Avenue, Bellerose Avenue and Dickinson Avenue Elementary schools visited on a designated day and explored classes, spoke with current students and

asked questions about the building and life as a middle schooler. They also participated in icebreaker challenges, a question and answer session with their soon-to-be guidance counselor and took part in a building scavenger hunt to get to know their surroundings and some current middle school students. East Northport Middle School had fifth-graders from Fifth Avenue, Pulaski Road, Bellerose Avenue and Dickinson Avenue Elementary schools also visit their building where each incoming sixth-

grader was paired with a current sixth-grader for the day. The students toured the school and went to classes with their buddy who showed them how it feels to be in middle school. Principal Pasquale DeStefano answered questions in the morning that the students had and topics, such as lockers, clubs and sports, were discussed. In addition, both schools allowed the fifth-graders to see a student concert to get a better feel for what the schools offer.

Battle of the Books Competition Third-grade students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School recently took part in the schools annual ELA LEAP Battle of the Books competition. Students prepared for the event by reading 14 books, along with some bonus books. All the books were chosen based on their similarities to give students a proper challenge. The seven teams consisted of

three or four students that worked together to answer questions based on the books. Students were given colored paddles with book titles on them to submit their answers. Family members were invited to the event to watch their children show off their reading skills. Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources Dr. Rory Manning, Principal

Marguerite Greene and Assistant Principal Mary Williams made an appearance as well to show their support for the hardworking students. The competition ended with multiple tied teams. First place winners included Team Three and Team Six who both scored a 21 in the competition and received a gold medal for their achievement.

Plaque Unveiling The Town of Huntington marked Memorial Day 2017 with its annual wreath ceremony at Town Hall’s Veterans Plaza May 28th, using the occasion to dedicate a plaque adding the name of a longtime member to the memorial recognizing those who served on the Town’s Veterans Advisory Board. William Amadio, who passed away in October at the age of 86, was a member of the Veterans Advisory Board for more than 25 years. A lifelong Huntington resident, Amadio served in the Army during the Korean War and was instrumental in creating the Korean War kiosk, which sits in the lobby of Town Hall. Amadio’s mission was to see that people did not forget the ‘Forgotten War,” and that every person who served in that war would have their name in the kiosk so they would not be forgotten. In addition to serving on the Veterans Advisory Board, Amadio also was a commissioner and treasurer of the TriVillage Little League; treasurer of the Northport VFW post, the Huntington chapter of AARP and Italian Geneology. Supervisor Petrone and Veterans Advisory Board chairman Bill Ober unveiled the plaque, with the assistance of Amadio’s widow, Josephine, as other family members looked on. Supervisor Petrone and Councilwomen Susan A. Berland and Tracey A. Edwards, in their remarks commemorating Memorial Day, all recognized Amadio’s contributions to the community. Supervisor Petrone noted that Amadio was the source of historical information about the Town and its veterans, Councilwoman Berland recognized Amadio as a friend and Councilwoman Edwards noted that Amadio has been a friend of her mother’s dating back to her mother’s high school days. “Bill Amadio knew Tracey Edwards before there was a

Continue to keep their memories alive.” Councilman Eugene Cook said, “Every year we celebrate, and it gets us stronger as a community. The Town of Huntington does such a great job putting this event together, and it makes my heart warm.” He also noted his family tradition at annual Memorial Day barbecues of pausing before sitting down to eat to say a special prayer for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Councilwoman Edwards said, “Memorial Day is a day for us to recognize and to thank all of the families for all of your sacrifices…Our veterans continue to serve. They continue to lead in the town of Huntington. They continue to volunteer, they continue to mentor, they continue to serve. So today, I want to recognize those who have given their ultimate sacrifices and those who are here today. We just want to make sure that all of you understand that here in the Town of Huntington our veterans continue to lead.” As is traditional, members of the Veterans Advisory Board placed wreaths at the monuments for the various wars. At the monument for fallen heroes, Supervisor Petrone was joined in placing the wreath by Constance Mangano of Greenlawn, whose son Anthony was killed in Afghanistan in 2008. The invocation and benediction were delivered by The Rev. Peter Kaczmarek of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Greenlawn. The Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America were sun by the Half Hollow Hills High School West Blue Notes.
