While speaking with Robyn, she shared a great story about a routine visit with her dental hygienist, Sue. Sue was explaining how arthritis was really becoming a problem in her hands. After a short discussion with Sue, Robyn challenged her to cut out all dairy for a month. After only a few days Sue called Robyn to share she was already having less pain and was now fully committed to making it through the dairy-free month. Through the month Sue made a few appointments with Robyn and made a few other small changes to her diet. Not long after that first month Sue’s arthritic pains were gone, she lost 30 pounds, reduced her bad cholesterol and her blood pressure normalized. All welcomed benefits but completely unexpected by Sue, although Robyn

During the program’s visit, students rotated between activities including a multiplication tables hop-scotch, whisper/loud movements, creating math problems for their classmates by jumping from number to number on a large board, and time-telling on a giant
analog clock. “Our students respond extraordinarily positively to practicing skills in ways that don’t require paper and a pencil,” said Elementary Instructional Coordinator Lindsey Andersen. “So when we bring programs like this into our school, we make sure that it all reinforces what they’re learning in the classroom — and when they leave, those concepts are further ingrained into their minds.”

Problem-Solving Programmers
The guidance department at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District has been bringing in furry friends to interact with students throughout the school year. Now that finals are around the corner, two trained therapy dogs have been helping de-stress children and afford them a “brain break” during the day. According to recent studies done by universities across the country, having the incentive of a visiting dog increases motivation and improves student behavior. Additionally, having a dog present helps students cope with lessons covering heavy topics such as wars and historical tragedies, and also aids student growth in Social and Emotional learning (SEL), which is now incorporated into New York State’s mandated curriculum. One of the school’s regular visitors, a Beagle named Lala, belongs to guidance counselor Dahlia Roemer, while the other, a Cockapoo named Morris, belong to OMS eighth-grader Orla — both of which have been trained and certified by the organization “Pet Partners, and have brought many smiles to the students of Oldfield Middle. Along with Ms. Roemer, members of the student group “Tornadoes Listening and Caring” (TLC) have shared responsibilities of visiting classrooms with the therapy dog as well. This group of students were chosen by their peers and specially trained by the guidance staff to help students with everyday problems and to know when to get the help of an adult. “Having the chance to pet a dog helps get your mind off of the things worrying you,” said

Caring For Quails Thanks to the environmentally conscious teachers at Ocean Avenue Elementary School in the Northport-East Northport School District, select classrooms throughout the building have the opportunity to raise small flock of baby Bobwhite Quails in partnership with the Seatuck Environmental Association. When these baby quail have grown, they will be released into the wild in order to combat the population’s sharp decline. Since the quails’ entrance into the world through their shells, classrooms been learning everything there is to
know about them, as well getting to care for them and interact with them. “This isn’t just a cute project we’re doing,” said first grade teacher Margaret Anderson. “Along with teaching students about the native species of long island, we’re teaching them concepts like biomimicry — how things that we create mimic things in nature, like flippers used to scuba-dive mimic the webbed feet of a duck — and the difference between wild animals and domestic ones. They’re absorbing so much from having the quails here.” In addition to partnering with the
Seatuck Environmental Association, teachers have taken on this project as an inspired result of completing the Greentree Foundation’s Ecology Workshop — a summer program that seeks to provide Long Island teachers with knowledge and techniques to better teach students about the natural world. “There’s so many benefits of bringing nature into the classroom, and vice versa,” said third grade teacher Katarina Moy, “and this project in particular is teaching them that they can make a difference in the world around them — no matter how small.”

Honoring Business Student The Northport-East Northport School District’s Board of Education recognized its business education student of the month during its meeting on May 9. Senior Annette Lyubchenko is a student in the Academy of Finance program and has taken electives outside of AOF. In Virtual Enterprise, a simulated virtual firm where students engage in traditional business activities including marketing, human
resources, finance and accounting, she serves as vice president of administration. “Annette is a combination of poise, grace, grit and determination and we are honored to recognize her as Northport High School’s Business Education Student of the Month,” said Northport High School Assistant Principal Denise Keenan. Annette is a well-rounded student and is active in the National Honor Society, DECA, the Tigerettes
Dance Team, where she serves as a captain, and the Multicultural club, which allows her to explore her heritage more deeply. She speaks only Russian at home and has been a wealth of information on international perspectives for her teachers and peers. Annette will be continuing her education at Marist College, where she will be studying business administration with a focus in marketing.
Math League High Scorers Northport High School students Camden Burk, Alexia Kaloudis, and Peter Mainetti were recognized at the Suffolk County Math Teachers Association Senior High Awards Dinner on May 20. These students, who competed in the senior level Math
League, received some of the highest scores in the county out nearly 80 teams. Northport High School, overall, was ranked the seventh highest scoring school in the county. “All three of these students tackle accelerated math programs, and are
doing so with tremendous amounts of success,” said NHS math teacher Anthony Perico. “Their placement in this competition is an embodiment of their hard work and dedication to the field of mathematics.”

The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that. New Ground, based in Levittown, offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.
New Ground’s JumpStart Program launched in 2012 to expand these critical services to additional homeless families on their wait-list for the Long Term Housing Program. This Program is open to any homeless families, not just Veterans, and is intended to give families a jump-start on accomplishing their goals. When these families later transition into the Long Term Housing Program, they are well on their way toward realizing the steps needed to secure an independent future. A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social
The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program. Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals. All residents pay an affordable rent and although New Ground assists them with various costs and hurdles they may face, they truly get the feeling of being a responsible homeowner.
