Fixing The System By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you
guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.
It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

The Dix Hills Fire Department hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to inaugurate their newly completed Training Facility on Sunday, May 18th. State Assemblymen Andrew Raia and Chad Lupinacci, Town Council Members Susan Berland and Mark Cuthbertson, Fire Chief’s from neighboring fire departments, and community residents, joined with the department membership to commemorate the opening. The new training facility simulates a typical Dix Hills house. It is a prefabricated 2,556-square-foot steel building, and consists of two floors and an attic. The facility was constructed some 600 feet behind Station #1

on Deer Park Avenue, and cost approximately $550,000. The building was completed in mid-April and the project was finished under budget. The Board of Fire Commissioners planned and budgeted for this purchase several years ago, and funding was set aside each year in a Capital Reserve fund. As a result, there will be no increase in fire district taxes resulting from this project. The new training facility will provide the volunteer firefighters with a dedicated area to hone their skills, enhancing their ability to protect the community. Firefighters can safely train in this building in realistic conditions of hot, smoky, low visibility environments. Additionally it allows for greater
flexibility in scheduling live fire training sessions, thereby reducing costs. Currently, the Dix Hills Fire Department can only attend such trainings at the Suffolk County Fire Academy in Yaphank, with limited scheduling availability. This means up to 40 members have to depart the area for extended periods of time, and could leave the community short of manpower in the event a major fire or emergency situation arises. For the Dix Hills Fire Department, this building will serve as a major component in future trainings and will directly impact their ability to save lives and property within the community.

A Return To Summer On The Shore
With every passing day, it becomes clearer that summer is almost in full swing. The beaches are filling with tourists, and the ferries are packed! As a strong Memorial Day Weekend predicted, this summer is turning out to be very busy. It is my fifth summer working at Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach. My first few shifts of the summer have been crazier than in years prior. We are already seeing a rush of people eager to take part in the festivities associated with a warm summer. Thus far, it seems as if the lull created by
Hurricane Sandy has finally ended. People are returning to Fire Island slowly, but steadily. Only time will tell, but it looks as if we are experiencing a return to normalcy. Dolphins can already be seen swimming off the beach, and they are plentiful. As we kick off the summer, it is important to remember that Fire Island is not just a place to have a fun weekend; for many, like myself, Fire Island is the place that we call home. It is a place where memories have been formed. Each year, we see drunk people and other party animals who do
not take consideration for the environment or Fire Island as a whole. As an advocate for nature preservation, this truly saddens me. The state of both our beaches and our infrastructure has worsened in the past few years. Even though I’m just a kid, these changes are pretty obvious. Everywhere you look, degradation is found. As you head to the beach this summer, remember to pick up your garbage and protect wildlife. This will ensure that we will have great summers every year.

removed. “It’s been a long time coming, and it’s been a difficult project, but it was well worth it,” Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said during a brief ceremony marking the reopening. “What is really amazing, when you stand on these docks, is the cement and the difference it is with the sturdiness. It’s very secure, it’s very stable and the look of it is fantastic. It is such an upgrade from what we had before,” Councilwoman Susan A. Berland said. The project dates back to 2011, when the Town Board passed a resolution directing the town’s Maritime Services department to come up with a plan and a consultant was hired to prepare preliminary engineering drawings. The plans were reviewed with various stakeholders, including the Village of Northport, the Boating Advisory Council and the Greater Huntington Council of Yacht and Boating Clubs. Work was originally
scheduled to begin in the winter of 2012-2013, but bad weather twice delayed the project’s start. Hurricane Sandy delayed the issuance of the necessary dredging permits by the Army Corps of Engineers and the State DEC and Department of State’s Coastal Consistency Division. The Army Corps’ permit required dredging to be done during an October 1 to January 14 window, and by the time the permit was issued, that could not be accomplished within the time frame. That delayed the project for a year. This past harsh winter further delayed the project because Northport Harbor froze over for the first time in many years. Work installing the piers had to be done in the water, and this could not be accomplished in a frozenover harbor. Of the $1.76 million cost, $1.5 million came from the sale of bonds and the remainder from the Town’s Parks and Recreation Capital Reserve.

The Long Island Shakespeare Festival (LISF) will present free public performances of an abridged version of Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part I when the production returns for its 14th season at Suffolk County Community College’s Ammerman Campus in Selden this summer. Performances are presented rain or shine. Shakespeare’s rousing history play features the invented character of Falstaff at the height of his rowdy and bawdy powers. The delinquent Prince Hal, the fiery Hotspur, and a host of nobles and ne’er-do-wells make for a stirring and exuberant evening of theatre where fact and fiction blend seamlessly under Shakespeare’s sure hand as
he paints the portrait of a young prince’s reformation and ascent to manhood. The public is encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to one of the upcoming performances: July 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, 11th and 12th at 8 p.m. outdoors (indoors if inclement weather).

The Town of Huntington officially reopened the Woodbine Marina on May 23rd, following completion of the first major upgrade of the facility since it was built almost 50 years ago. The $1.76-million project increased the capacity of the marina, which has a 14-year waiting list for slips; added electrical and waterhookups for boats; and made the marina more resistant to the effects of storms. The upgraded marina has 56 slips, up from the previous 36, and finger floats, so boats can be entered from the side of the vessel. The floats are cement, which make them more stable than the wooden ones they replaced. The floats are attached to steel piles, which are capable of weathering surges greater than what occurred in the Hurricane of 1938, the largest such storm in Long Island history. Additionally, the area beneath the marina was dredged to increase depths and debris was

Accepting Applications The Huntington Community Development Agency announces that it is accepting applications for persons wanting to participate in a July 17th lottery for the 260 residences at the Club at Melville, an affordable over-55 community under construction on Deshon Drive. The Community Development Agency is administering the lottery, which will consider three separate income categories, in accordance with the requirements of Town Code. The income levels and the sales price for each category are: 80 percent of median income (sales price $211,750; maximum income for a two-person household is $67,800); 120 percent of the median income (sale price $317,750; maximum income for a two-person household is $101,650); and 130 percent of median income (sale price $385,000; maximum
income for a two-person household is $120,281). Applications are also being accepted for persons who do not meet the income criteria but who may be offered the opportunity to purchase one of the $385,000 units if any are available, depending on the results of the lottery process. Persons wanting to be considered for any of the units must complete a lottery intake form. The form, guidelines and a cover letter can all be downloaded from the Town’s website. The completed form should be mailed to the Huntington Community Development Agency, 100 Main Street, Room 309, Huntington, NY 11743. Mark the envelope: Attention: The Club at Melville. Only one intake form per family is allowed. Those whose lottery number entitles them to further consideration will be asked to complete
a formal application and provide standard income and asset documentation To be eligible, the form must be received in the Community Development Agency office on or before 4 p.m. on July 10th, 2014, or postmarked by July 10th. The lottery will be held at 9:30 a.m. July 17th at the Cinema Arts Center, 423 Park Avenue, Huntington. Persons do not need to be present at the lottery to participate. Students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District put their creative caps on for the school’s Invention Convention in midMay. Open to all Boyd students, participants were encouraged to use their imagination, creativity and basic science and mathematical skills to identify a need or solve a problem.
In order to become an “inventor,” students were tasked to develop an invention idea – a practical function to solve an everyday or global problem. They kept an inventor’s journal to collect ideas about their inventions and to sketch a diagram of their creations. In their journal, students addressed basic information about their inventions, including the user of the product,
how it works and how the invention is built. During the actual Invention Convention, students displayed prototypes of their creations that included pre-scooped ice cream, woodpecker deterrent, edible paint, a protecta-purse alarm system and a new generation of windshield wipers, to name NEW EAGLES HONORED - Pictured before Marc’s project are: Eagle Scout a few. Health and physical education teacher Susan Crispino conducts weekly yoga classes before school for interested students. In addition to the weekly sessions, Ms. Crispino also held yoga sessions prior
to the New York State assessments. “Among its many health benefits, yoga is said to promote brain activity, reinforce good posture and increase concentration,” Ms. Crispino said.

New Eagles Honored Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta, NYS Assemblymen Michael Fitzpatrick and Andrew Raia, a representative for NYS Senator John Flanagan, Huntington Town Councilwoman Susan Berland and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson attended the Eagle Court of Honor for Marc Daniel Flynn and Joshua Alan Pinals at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Also paying tribute were representatives from the Suffolk County
Police Department, Fire Department and U.S. Marines. Both scouts did their Eagle Scout Community Service Project on St. Paul Lutheran’s property. Marc Daniel Flynn, of Kings Park, constructed two wooden benches surrounding a flowering pear tree in memory of his late grandfather who was active at the church. Josh Alan Pinals, of East Northport, designed and created a barrier guard along Vernon Valley Road
at St. Paul’s to enhance the safety of the children at the Lutheran Day School. Suffolk County Legislator Trotta said, “This is a very proud moment for these young men and their families, as well as their troop leaders and fellow scouts. I extend my congratulations to all of them for being outstanding community leaders and hope that they will remain active in their respective communities.”

Spark Plug Awards
The Matinecock District of the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, held its annual District Awards and Recognitions Dinner to honor adult volunteers on Thursday, May 22nd, at Huntington Elks Lodge. The Matinecock District serves over 3,000 youth members in the Town of Huntington and in the Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge school districts in western Smithtown Township. Members of their Cub Scout Pack or Boy Scout Troop had nominated possible recipients of
the Sparkplug Award, and honoree names were kept as a surprise until the presentations. Presentations were made to those individuals who “are the spark plug of the engine, who get things started and going and are an inspiration to the youths and adults that they work with and encourage.” Each recipient is truly the “spark” that helps ignite the motivation and thrust within that unit. GEICO Skytyper pilot and Northport resident Bob Johansen became the latest recipient of the FAA’s Wright Brother’s Master Pilot Award at a ceremony at the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island. The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award Program (MPA) recognizes pilots who have conducted 50 or more consecutive years of safe flight operations. Johansen is the slot pilot for the GEICO Skytypers, flying the vintage WWII trainer plane called the SNJ-2 in lowaltitude, close-formation demonstrations at air shows around the nation. He earned his private pilot’s license in 1958 and after graduation from Kalamazoo College in 1961 he joined the Navy and reported to Pensacola, FL, for flight training. He was later based at Quonset Point, RI, flying Grumman S2 “Tracker” anti-submarine aircraft from aircraft carriers. After retiring from active duty in 1966, he joined TWA as a commercial pilot out of New York on international and domestic routes for 33 years. He joined the Farmingdale-
based GEICO Skytypers in 1977. Scoliosis is the lateral bending and twisting of the spine that, when progressed, causes body deformities and compromises internal organs. It affects seven million people in the U.S. with a diagnosis most commonly occurring in pre-adolescence. The disease shows progression ten times more frequently in girls than boys. Curvy Girls groups provide peer-to-peer and familyto-family support and

Now 21 and graduating from American University with a degree in business and marketing, Leah helped her group to go global after she was featured on the first TeenNick HALO Awards – Helping And Leading Others – in 2009. Hosted by entertainer Nick Cannon, the show engages celebrities to honor teens who give back to their community while overcoming hardship. Leah was honored by
singer/actor Justin Timberlake.
