Photo courtesy of Northport-East Northport Union Free School District The Northport-East Northport Board of Education is proud to recognize Northport High School senior Tage Oster as the Business Student of the Month, and he will be recognized at the board’s monthly meeting on June 4. Tage was described by his teachers and high school soccer coach as an outstanding mentor, leader and role model, as well as an
engaging public speaker. For the past three years, Tage has been an active member of the school’s Academy of Finance Advisory Board and currently serves as the group’s president. Over the years, he has contributed to the AOF newsletter and spearheaded such events as the AOF volleyball fundraiser and food and gift fund drive for COVID-19 response. “When a job needs to be done, we look to Tage,” Northport High School Assistant Principal and Business Education Chairperson Denise Keenan said. Additionally, as a sophomore, Tage earned a spot on the school’s junior varsity soccer team and quickly worked his way up to varsity, where he served as the team’s captain during his senior year. Tage was also a member of the school’s Business Honor Society and Distributive Education Club of America (DECA). He plans to continue his passion for business after graduation at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management, where he plans to study management with a concentration in nonprofit. “There were a lot of avenues for me to explore that passion for business that I had. From getting so involved in these clubs, I was able to figure out what I wanted to do in the future,” Tage said. “It was just nice for me to have my high school have such an influence on what I want to do in the future.”

Home Garden A Guide To Buying And Setting Up A Bird Bath Warm weather means more opportunities to spend time outdoors while at home. Whether your favorite form of outdoor recreation includes sitting on the patio reading or digging in the garden, there’s a good chance that you will be sharing the space with local wildlife. Optimizing opportunities to view and interact with backyard wildlife can make the great outdoors even more enjoyable. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology indicates that there are around 2,059 bird species on the continent of North America. Red-winged blackbirds, yellowrumped warblers, American robins, and chipping sparrows are among the most commonly seen birds in North America. Making a backyard hospitable to birds can increase the chances for sightings and hearing their sweet songs. Installing a bird bath can be a step in the right direction. Bird baths can make yards more attractive to birds. Birds
require a supply of fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing. By setting up a bath, homeowners can attract not only seed-loving birds, but those that don’t eat seeds and wouldn’t normally congregate around feeders, indicates All About Birds. Experts surmise that birds may bathe to maintain their feathers. Not all bird baths are constructed in the same fashion. Many bird baths sold in stores are better suited for decoration than for serving as functional baths. There are four general types of bird baths: standing pedestal, hanging bath, deck-mounted, and ground-level. In general, the lower a bird bath is to the ground, the more likely birds are to use it. Most natural sources of water birds use are on or near the ground. Therefore, groundlevel bird baths may be the best investments. It is important to keep the water in a bird bath shallow (around two inches of water or less). This enables birds to splash
around safely and wade in. Birds do not want to slide around, so a material that is coated and slippery, like glazed ceramic or glass, may not be too popular. Rough stone or a bird bath modified with pea gravel or rocks can give birds steady footing. Place the bird bath in the shade if possible to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterwards. All About Birds also says that a bird bath is more attractive if it has a dripping or moving water feature, as this is often irresistible to birds. Another way to ensure the bath will be used, is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and other debris. Once birds learn there is a comfortable bath nearby, they may be more apt to visit a yard and may even become frequent guests.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, nonprofits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is well-rounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.
Outdoor improvements can improve the marketability of a home, as well as enhance its appearance and function.
As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, however her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Sometimes something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity.
She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for. Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!” Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need. One way we can start is by donating food, clothes, shoes, blankets, socks or any other important items to Eileen for her to distribute. She visits homeless individuals twice a day and any donations received will be handed out to those in need.

Harley Ave and EMS Host Reverse Parade For Students
On the morning of May 14, teachers, administrators and staff members from Harley Avenue Primary School gathered at Elwood Middle School to host a reverse parade for students. The sun was shining, teachers decorated their cars, balloons were hung, bubbles blown and music played throughout the campus. Cars were
parked along the campus’ perimeter and more than 300 families drove through to wave hello to their “Harley family.” The parade concluded with a wave from Principal Elissa Millan and the Harley Knight. In the afternoon, faculty and staff from Elwood Middle School hosted their reverse parade and again welcomed hundreds of
families to drive through the campus. Principal Dr. Christina Sapienza and Assistant Principal Dawn Valle were there to welcome cars into the middle school parking lot. “Our hearts were warmed seeing all of the smiling faces of the students we miss so much,” Eileen Kelly-Gorman, the district director of math, science and technology, said.

The Port Press Going Strong Amid Pandemic

Since April, even with stay-at-home orders and distance learning in place, Northport High School’s online publication, The Port Press, has been going strong. The staff, comprised of students from all grade levels, consists of an editing team, contributors and freelancers – all of which have been working hard to keep their school up to date on news surrounding their community and beyond. Stories have ranged from an interview with
Northport High School Principal Daniel Danbusky to discuss school closures to “Senior Spotlights.” These students, along with their advisors, Danielle Milazzo and Debra Cavaliere, meet twice a week digitally via Google Meets to brainstorm, plan and create content. They even gained new staff members after reaching out to the school community via social media. Those new members have already created articles and videos, and are working on future
podcasts. The Port Press is active on social media, with robust Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts that reach different members of the school community. To get the latest high school news, head to www.nhsportpress. com. “They have been so active and involved so we really would like to recognize their hard work during this very crazy time,” Ms. Cavaliere said.
Boy Scout Troop 12 Holds “Drive-By Food Drive”
“It all started during a ZOOM Leaders’ Meeting with a comment from Assistant Scoutmaster Mike Magerle “we’ve got to do something ‘Scouty’ with these boys…how about a Food Drive?” Scoutmaster Leer Leary continued, “Once the logistics were mapped out, Troop 12 obtained permission from their Charter Organization, the United Methodist Church to use the grounds on West Neck Road in Huntington. The next part of the equation fell into their lap when in the middle of discussing usage of the UMC parking lot, the Charter Organization Representative Merv Wood, mentioned that the Helping Hand Rescue Mission was always looking for donations. Extra masks and gloves were secured and a small
promotion campaign was ignited amongst the Troop email and Facebook page as well as the Church’s newsletter.” After the go ahead was given on May 14th, in a short time, everything started to fall in place. Boxes were donated by Stop & Shop and all that was left was the rain to hold off and for everyone to obey the guidelines set forth for safety – keeping a safe distance from each other and the drivers, masks and gloves at all times, getting food from the cars and onto the tables, sorting and carrying the food to the distribution center, etc. Within two hours on Saturday May 23, Troop 12 had over 35 boxes of non-perishable food (some high in protein/ some fun snacks) as well as personal products such as toothpaste and diapers.
Everything was dropped off at Helping Hand Rescue Mission on Broadway in Huntington. The night before Troop 12’s Food Drive, the Mission had lines winding their way out of the parking lot and down the road – carloads of folks looking for the helpful pantry bags that the Mission hands out to over 100 families per day. Troop 12 Scouts got a chance to do their Good Deed that day. There were lots of smiles behind the masks of the Boy Scouts collecting and sorting the dropped off donations. The folks in the cars felt good too for doing something in a time when we all feel so helpless. Commented the Scoutmaster, “What a winwin-win day. Yes, we’re going to do it again real soon. Thanks to everybody who came out.”

According to clinical psychologist
William Stixrud, Ph.D., decades of psychological research has shown that a lack of perceived control leads people to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, and resigned. So adolescents who feel that they have control over the direction of their lives, feelings which can be strengthened when they are given some level of autonomy as teenagers, are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, or resigned as adults.

Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration.
(The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips During Lockdown As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
